  1. I am scheduled to go on the Nieuw Amsterdam ship out of Fort Lauderdale on April 4th to Spain April 17th. We booked it through HAL directly, including the flight back. I'm trying to figure out if this will be canceled or changed in some way. Details are sparse from HAL directly. If Spain becomes a Corona virus target, would the ship go elsewhere, or would they potentially cancel the 13 day cruise entirely? Will HAL help with the flight back as it was booked through them? Definitely still looking forward to the trip, but also don't want to be in Quarantine for a month!

  4. Cruisers are posting that they are booking cruises for this year's Caribbean season and onwards so here is an update of the Dry Dock, Charter and Groups file. The charters and group sailings organisations have been slowly updating their plans, so the information listed here may change over the coming months. Zaandam and Amsterdam have missed their dry docks which were scheduled to happen in April and May 2020 and as yet no updated scheduled dates are available. If you have information about groups charters or dry docks then please post here and I will update in the next file. 6. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at pier 26(starboard to) from 0545-1700. She is doing a 7-day Tropical Caribbean cruise. Also Zuiderdam will be in Aruba from 1300-2300. https://www.portarubawebcam.com/ Next up: Nieuw Statendam on Sunday, 1 March.
  7. Agree with the above - the Signature Suites on the Nieuw Amsterdam are far superior to the Vista Suites on the Konigsdam. The Vista Suites are essentially slightly larger standard balcony rooms with the word "suite" slapped on so they can charge more. The balcony space of the side facing Signature Suite will be SIGNIFICANTLY larger (both in width and depth) with two padded armchairs and footstools and a dining height table, where the aft facing Vista Suite will be only mariginally deeper than a standard balcony and will have two standard mesh balcony chairs, possibly one footstool, and a low small side table. There is no comparison and if itinerary, price and perks comparable I'd go Signature Suite on the NA all day, every day!!!!!!!!!!
  8. Not sure I understand your options, but let me give it a try. If you are considering an aft facing cabin on deck 7 on the Konginsdam (K), you either must take a Neptune (SB) or a Vista Suite (AS). I ASSUME you are looking at the AS. On the Nieuw Amsterdam (NA) the deck 6 Signatures can be SS, SY or SZ. Of these, I personally like the SY angled out cabins 6108 or 6113, as you can see forward plus they are a bit larger. Between the two options, I would go for the NA Signature, as it is about 75% larger than the AS suite (Vista) you would get on the K. Of course, you will not have the nice aft view (I have never found them to be noisy), but the difference in cabin size more than makes up for it IMO. PLUS, being in a Signature, you have a good chance of being offered an upsell to a Neptune for a reasonable price. In answering this, I assumed that the cabin prices were about the same for your two options......
  9. Y'all have been wonderful with the information. Another question......I was thinking of getting an aft cabin on deck 7 on Koningsdam or a signature suite on deck 6 on Nieuw Amsterdam. I think I'm leaning towards Koningsdam. Is it worth it to get an aft facing cabin? And are they really noisy?

Then I discovered private tours, open seating and balcony cabins!
  12. My wife and I have not cruised on any of the HAL ships. We are about ready to book a holiday trip for this year. My question is...all things being equal with the exception of cabin selection, should we do an inside cabin on the Nieuw Statendam or a balcony on the Nieuw Amsterdam? The cost is roughly the same for the inside and balcony. The Nieuw Staendam is a relatively new ship, and the the Nieuw Amsterdam was recently refurbished in 2018. My thinking is since there is limited daylight hours to enjoy the balcony, perhaps the inside cabin on the newer ship is the way to go. But I would appreciate any thoughts and suggestions from folks who have cruised on either or both ships. Thanks so much! Mick
  13. I am a Koningsdam fan as well. Love the Rolling Stone Rock Room, BBKings, the Dutch Cafe and the showers in the stateroom are the best, no more curtains sticking to you, beautiful glass shower.........the service is just what you expect from HAL. The Nieuw Amsterdam is a beautiful ship, a little smaller, but definitely a great option as well. You can’t go wrong with either ship and Alaska is absolutely amazing. enjoy your cruise.

  15. May is a good time for whales as those that migrate are brining their frisky calves back to Alaska waters. There are a number of whales in Auke Bay, Juneau that do not migrate. Every whale excursion guarentees you will see a whale or recive a big rebate. I like the Koningisdam but that means 500 more passengers competing for the same excursions. If you choose the Nieuw Amsterdam, you will miss out on one restaurant, NY Deli/Pizza, and the Ductch Cafe that are available on the Koningsdam. I will be on both the North and Southbound cruises on the NA in May 2021 and recommend for your intital visit (most return to experience and photograph the scenery they missed): Juneau: dogsledding in the snow or whale watching Ketchikan: Crab Fishing with lots of eagle photo ops or Crab Feasting with flightseeing Skagway: dogsleeding in the snow or train ride
  16. HAL named one of their Signature Class ships the Nieuw Amsterdam while the Amsterdam was still sailing. For those "uneducated" potential cruise guests, there was a minor issue with the confusion in their minds with both ships carrying the name of "Amsterdam". Personally, I won't be too concerned. There's just too much in flux these days to have any idea what the scene is going to look like when--and if--the dust ever settles from this virus.
  17. Both are very nice ships. I prefer the Nieuw Amsterdam primarily since I normally book Signature suites and those on the NA are much more affordable. Also, there are many more Neptunes on the NA, thus more likely to score and upsell offer.
  18. I’m a Koningsdam fan. Newer ship. Newer design. Large tiled showers in all staterooms. Better entertainment. Nieuw Amsterdam is a nice ship but I cruised Eurodam (twin sister) last year and was very disappointed how much they cut entertainment. For the ports, are you more the active type or the lazy guided tour type?
  19. A "few years" is defined as since 2002 in my opinion. Near the conclusion of the 2002 Maiden Asian Pacific Cruise of the Volendam, the Music Director informed us that the live multi-piece orchestra was "no more" in the future and would be replaced by "canned music". This was a significant change in what any of us had experienced on our past cruises. Canned music began; was replaced; other "offerings" were tried; live music--on a more reduced scale--was tried. Lots of different types of musical performers and types have been experienced over the years since 2002. The ones which I enjoyed--naturally--were the ones that "disappeared" on a future cruise. The highlight of the last years was the introduction of the group called Cantare who performed during the Nieuw Amsterdam's Dedication Program. I sailed on her that first season and I was blessed to hear them in person. Why all this disruption in the music/entertainment program on HAL ships in the past? This is my opinion and you may trash it as you wish. The Director of that part of the Company has been there for years and a close aide of his was the worst CD I have ever experienced on any cruise during my 2008 world cruise. What the guests prefer means little to nothing, in my opinion. Maybe with the reduction of staff that HAL has undergone, these two individuals have either retired, been furloughed, or chosen to find a different job.
  20. My wife and I have sailed several times on the Nieuw Amsterdam and on our last trip from San Francisco to Fort Lauderdale, via the Panama Canal we booked a family cabana for the entire cruise. It was delightful and I would be glad to answer questions on the Cabanas if anyone is interested.
