  3. She's in for bunkering and some provisioning, similar to the other HAL ships that have been at the Grand Bahama/Great Stirrup Cay anchorage. Same thing is happening in the Pacific off Ensenada, Mexico. Not sure what you mean by "home" countries. HAL's flag state is the Netherlands and the crew can come from up to 45 different countries. There are currently some ships (Amsterdam, Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, etc.) enroute to Indonesia and The Philippines to repat crew with potentially some more to follow
  4. A little in advance, here is the February update of the Dry Dock, Charter and Groups file. Not too much new activity, but with Europe 2021 now online the expectation is of more charters and groups over the coming months. The file consists of information gathered from the internet or information kindly posted on these threads by other cruisers and should not be considered a complete indicator of group activity. If you have information about groups charters or dry docks then please post here and I will update in the next file. 7. Today, Sunday 3rd May, we would have been in Montréal having completed our Zaandam Canada-New England cruise. Then on Tuesday off to Amsterdam to board Nieuw Statendam next Sunday for a Baltics cruise, then home to Vancouver. We've been reminding each other of where we would have been, throughout the past week or two. Ahh well, there will be more cruises next year, and plenty to dream about. Now off to watch some of our old cruise movies again! 🙂

  11. Marella Cruises announced today that it plans to retire the 1984-built Celebration, aka Noordam. The ship was built in 1984 by Chantiers de l'Atlantique for Holland America Line and sailed under its brand through 2005, when she was moved to Thomson Cruises, which eventually became Marella. I am sure many of us have fond memories of sailing on her and her sister ship, Nieuw Amsterdam. Another classic liner gone but not forgotten.

  13. We are currently on the Nieuw Amsterdam that is stranded in Port Everglades due to machanical issues. Cabin has strong mildew/musty odors and we didn't have a response for 4 hours after reporting the issue to shipboard services. When we didn't get a response from shipboard services within a couple hours I called HAL directly and finally got our stewards to show up to check out the odor issue (4 hours after reporting it). We're from Florida so we can stay in a hotel in Lauderdale any time we like which essentially is what we are doing now. Surprisingly several bars are out of certain spirits and supplies as well (even though we are still in port where they have access to everything). Since we are stuck in port the casino and many services are suspended as well. Any suggestions on how to get resolution on any of this? Ideally I'd like them to provide a refund and let us off the ship but I know that is unlikely. Unfortunately we sprung for an SS Suite this time too so our out of pocket is significant ☹️. Earliest possible departure time is AM on 12/15. Thanks for any suggestions.
  14. We just finished our first HAL cruise, a week on the Nieuw Amsterdam. Already looking to book our next. Because I work for a large university, we can only really travel from about 12/12/20 to 01/10/21. We travel with four of our youngest children(ages 7-17) and usually bring one or two extra with us, so cost is definitely a factor. We LOVED Half Moon Cay. We don't like the itinerary on the Nieuw Amsterdam the week we are looking at (alas, no HMC!); none of us have ever been to any of the ports that the Veendam will sail to that week (Trujillo Honduras, Costa Maya Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize). We prefer smaller, quieter, more intimate ships. We don't smoke though and really appreciated not having to walk through a smoky casino on the HAL-NA. Our children don't need any activities to be entertained. Veendam has some very bad reviews. That isn't always truth, so we're looking for feedback. We just had four interior cabins on the Verandah deck of the Veendam held. Not sure if that was a good plan or not; we have a day or two to decide...

  17. On other cruise lines, I've noticed that anytime dining in the MDR can be a problem on the first night out. Basically, the MDR gets slammed by everyone's arriving at almost the same time. I think that this happens because (a) the sequence of boarding, lifeboat drill, and sailing puts all passengers onto the same schedule, and (b) few people choose specialty dining on the first night. I'd expect that fixed-time dining isn't affected to the same extent. Does this happen on Holland America? On those other lines, I've started booking a specialty restaurant on the first night out. Would it be prudent to do this on the Nieuw Amsterdam next month?
  18. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at pier 21 (starboard to) from 0545-1700. She is headed out on a 7-day western Caribbean cruise. Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (01 Dec 0800-1600); Falmouth, Jamaica (03 Dec 0800-1700); George Town, Grand Cayman (04 Dec 0800-1600); Key West, Florida (06 Dec 0700-1700); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (07 Dec a0700) Zuiderdam is headed to Freeport for a drydock. She will be at pier 26 (port to) from 0500-1600 but as we all know, ships leaving for drydock do not always leave as scheduled. Also in port are Caribbean Princess at pier 2 from 0530-1600, Carnival Sunrise at pier 4 from 0445-1600, Celebrity Equinox at pier 25 from 0600-1530, Independence OTS at pier 18 from 0615-1630, and Majesty OTS at pier 19 from 0515-1600. Nieuw Statendam will be in Key West from 0800-1700. https://www.keywestharborwebcam.com/ Next up: Eurodam and Nieuw Statendam will be among the eight ships in port on Sunday, 1 December.

  20. Just a few words on our 11/30 cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam. Shipshape: Ship is 10 years old but in great shape. Cleanliness: Never been on a dirty HAL ship and the NA did not disappoint. Service: As always, excellent. Food MDR: Very good, no complaints, loved the Wienerschnitzel, the Ossobuco and the Sole. All the Pasta dishes were very good. Food in Lido Buffet. Again very good especially the soups. I don't eat much at lunch, just soup and a sandwich or a salad with soup. Entertainment: Excellent in BB Kings, Billboard Onboard and Lincoln Center. As far as the Mainstage, they had an excellent comedian on the second night, first night was a talk by Rachael our cruise director with some stories on the Caribbean. She was back on night 5 with a talk about the history of HAL. Both talks were very informative but this should have been held on sea days in the morning or afternoon, not a night when you expected to be entertained. On night 3 they had a dance show called Humanity, after 3 minutes we walked out. Very dark and boring. No entertainment in the Ocean bar which was packed every night for Happy Hour, how much would it cost to have a piano player at Cocktail times? Grand Cayman: Because of an undertow it was impossible to load passengers on to the tenders. The Captain tried everything he could do maneuvering the ship to other locations in harbor, no luck and and we spent the rest of the day at sea. Announcement was made that there would be open bars all over the ship with free Wine, Beer and Sodas from 1pm to 2pm, some took way too much advantage of the situation packing beer and soda into backpacks and saw one couple winding up with 8 glasses of wine each. Every passenger received a 50 dollar onboard credit and a 20 dollar refund for port charges, very fair but I'm sure some still complained. Only complaint was the thermostat in our cabin, way too cold at 70 degrees and when we tried to get it up to around 75, the heat would come on. Could not find a happy medium. Embarkation was very smooth and boarded the ship at 11:40, just in time for lunch in the Lido. We do the early walkoff (2nd couple off) and left the ship at 7:15 and were in our car in the garage by 7:30 for our 2.5 hour drive to home in Sebring Florida. Will be happy to try to answer any questions.
  21. Our very first cruise was to Alaska in 2014 on the Westerdam. This was our 3rd trip to Alaska and we went back to Holland. It was amazing! I think the passengers can make the cruise fun and we had some really great fellow cruisers. Ages from 20s - 70s but all young at heart and ready for fun. Boarding: was easy. got to the port by 11AM and on board by noon. Room: 7079 Signature Suite. Perfect size and balcony had lots of room with two loungers and table. It was pretty warm the entire trip so we used the balcony a lot. Entertainment: BB King was fantastic. This group had been together for the last 5 months and this was their last week and then a new group was coming. They really got the crowd going and dancing. They do three sessions each night 8:30/ 9:30 and 10:30 with a 15 minute break in between. We got their early for the first show to get a seat and never left. The string quartet was fabulous as well. They were from Russia and really sounded like a recording. Just beautiful We went to one variety show and a dancer was injured due to the rocking of the ship. They ended up cancelling the second show. Two nights were pretty rocky during the week. Spa: I got the salt water spa package with the heated spa lounger. It is $136 on line, but I waited too long and couldn't book before I left. When I went to sign up, they wanted to charge me $215, then after i protested $169 but finally got them to $136. I felt the workers at the spa were a bit snooty and not very helpful. There is also no water available to drink. So be sure to bring your own. Really loved the salt water after a day of touring. Excursions: We did the Tracy Inlet cruise and it was amazing. Rained most of the time, but the views were spectacular. We saw a "herd"? of sea lions and their babies splashing in the water. Must have been about 50 of them. a lot of harbor seals and one whale. Afterwards we we took the tram up Mt. Roberts and had dinner. Food was OK. Views were spectacular. The train/bus tour in Skagway. I messed up and had the bus portion first and then the train coming back. I would do the RT train if I had to do it over. The train has nicer views IMO and much more comfortable than the bus. There is also supposed to be a club car with big plush chairs. I'd look into that option. Ketchikan: We did the Ketchikan Taxi cab tour with Tim White. Went to herring cove which is beautiful and to Potach park to see the Totems. Also went to the Rotary park. Saw lots of eagles. Didn't see any bears this time. Then went to a Jazz club in town. Good times Food: We ate in the main dining room the first night. Then Rudy's on Thursday night. This is the one night special chef deal. It was incredible! The remainder we ate in the buffet. Had the pizza and brought to our balcony. Also had the burger at the Dive In. They were very good as were the french fries. Casino: My husband played the slots. (his addiction) and won $910.00. So I'd say the slots are fairly loose. disembarking: We had an early flight so we did the self walk off. It was easy. Lines were long at customs as there were 4 ships in port. But moved fairly quickly. LOVED this cruise Dawn

  23. I sailed her in 1988 when she was Holland America's Noordam. She (and her sister ship. the Nieuw Amsterdam - now the Marella Spirit ) were constructed at a time when HAL was cash strapped and looking for a buyer, which eventually was Carnival Corp. Those two ships were outliers - at the time we thought they were conversions of cross-channel ferries - but they admirably carried on the HAL tradition. I have fond memories of her. Wherever she sails next, may the seas be calm and the journey be safe. There is no doubt in my mind that these two ships - and the Westerdam (now Marella Spirit) saved HAL at a time when its fortunes were in peril.
