  1. We are onboard the Nieuw Amsterdam for today’s sailing. The captain just announced that due to a technical issue we won’t be leaving on time. No ETA on sailing currently. Assuming worst case, what is the Standard Operating Procedure in this case?
  2. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at pier 26 (port to) from 0630-1700. She will be doing a 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise. Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos (16 Dec 0800-1500); San Juan, Puerto Rico (17 Dec 1300-2300); St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (18 Dec 0800-1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (20 Dec 0800-1500); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (21 Dec a0700) Also in port are Carnival Sunrise at pier 4 from 0430-1600, Celebrity Equinox at pier 25 from 0600-1530, Independence OTS at pier 18 from 0615-1630, Majesty OTS at pier 19 from 1015 (???seems late since she is coming from Nassau)-1
  3. On other cruise lines, I've noticed that anytime dining in the MDR can be a problem on the first night out. Basically, the MDR gets slammed by everyone's arriving at almost the same time. I think that this happens because (a) the sequence of boarding, lifeboat drill, and sailing puts all passengers onto the same schedule, and (b) few people choose specialty dining on the first night. I'd expect that fixed-time dining isn't affected to the same extent. Does this happen on Holland America? On those other lines, I've started booking a specialty restaurant on the first night out. Would
  4. I attended several classes on my recent NA cruise. The classes were informative and I felt like they provided me with some much needed advice. The instructor told us he would email us all the information he shared, so I did not take notes. So far, no email and I did leave him my address. Does anyone have a link they would share or direct me as to how to get the information? Thanks
  5. Hi....After reading on here about how lovely it is at Christmas in the Baltic area I am temped to book a Christmas cruise for next year. My question is ....on select fare is the shuttle included in the fare from Ijmuiden to Amsteredam or is there a charge for that transfer ?
  6. Just a few words on our 11/30 cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam. Shipshape: Ship is 10 years old but in great shape. Cleanliness: Never been on a dirty HAL ship and the NA did not disappoint. Service: As always, excellent. Food MDR: Very good, no complaints, loved the Wienerschnitzel, the Ossobuco and the Sole. All the Pasta dishes were very good. Food in Lido Buffet. Again very good especially the soups. I don't eat much at lunch, just soup and a sandwich or a salad with soup. Entertainment: Excellent in BB Kings, Billboard Onboard and Lincoln Center. As far as the M
  7. Life happens and we had to cancel plans for an October P&O Ventura Cruise. Things have stabilized and we were able to book this last minute cruise of 2 weeks on Nieuw Statendam. This is our First Holland America cruise and from what we’ve experienced in the first week it won’t be our last. We have really enjoyed the NS. Last week we visited Grand Turk, San Juan, St. Thomas and Half Moon Cay. This week it will be Half Moon Cay again, then Falmouth Jamaica, Georgetown Grand Cayman and Cozumel Mexico. Boarding last week was smooth (brief hiccup I explain below) I believe we were

  9. This thread will cover my two-week B2B aboard the Nieuw Statendam (NS) and provide answers to the recurring questions asked by CC members: ships officers, ship condition, check-in procedures, Customs/Immigration, electrical outlets, cooking demos, beverage packages, smoking in the Casino, EXC, what's for dinner, new High Score, B2B in-transit procedures, extra charges for entrees, Specialty Restaurant menu changes, what's new, internet speed and multiple-device connections, gala attire, Club Orange, etc. I will include my experiences and observations that may be useful to subsequent cruisers
  10. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at pier 26 (port to) from 0530-1700. She will be leaving on a 7-day Tropical Caribbean cruise. Key West, Florida (08 Dec 0800-1700); Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos (10 Dec 0800-1700); Amber Cove, Dominican Republic (11 Dec 0800-1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (13 Dec 0700-1500); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (14 Dec a0700) Also in port are Adventure OTS at pier 29 from 0430-1730, Carnival Magic at pier 4 from 0400-1600, Celebrity Equinox at pier 25 from 0600-1530, Crown Princess at pier 21 from 0545-1600, and Sky Princess at pier 2 from 0500-1600
  11. Greetings! We just got home from our Thanksgiving week voyage on the Nieuw Statendam, and wanted to do a little write up on our experiences. This was our first HAL cruise, and our second cruise ever (first was earlier this spring on the Celebrity Equinox), so we are still relatively new to cruising as a whole. Before I start, a quick preface to my upcoming wall of text. We tried very hard to not directly compare this experience with our first experience on Equinox, because different ships, different lines, different expectations. That said, sometimes it proved difficult to not sa
  12. My wife and I have not cruised on any of the HAL ships. We are about ready to book a holiday trip for this year. My question is...all things being equal with the exception of cabin selection, should we do an inside cabin on the Nieuw Statendam or a balcony on the Nieuw Amsterdam? The cost is roughly the same for the inside and balcony. The Nieuw Staendam is a relatively new ship, and the the Nieuw Amsterdam was recently refurbished in 2018. My thinking is since there is limited daylight hours to enjoy the balcony, perhaps the inside cabin on the newer ship
  13. Happy 1st Birthday December 5th. It’s hard to believe it’s a year ago that I boarded for the crossing.
  14. We are traveling with a group on this ship January 2021. Our rooms are on the 8th level, the pool is one above us on the 9th. Does anyone know if there is noise from the pool, such as, dragging the pool chairs for setting up the day? Our travel agent swears we will hear nothing, but I still question it. Thank you.
  15. Unfortunately, due to rough seas, ms Nieuw Amsterdam was not able to safely deploy tenders to visit Cayman/George Town. The captain tried for over an hour, re-positioning the ship, but was not satisfied that the ships tenders could be used safely. The other ships visiting used the ports larger tenders, similar to the ones at Half Moon Cay. I'm not sure why this was not an option (too expensive or not enough at the port?). So we have an extra sea day. Hopefully we will get the port fees refunded soon. We also received certain free drinks at select bars between 1pm an
  16. Do they charge the head tax (8 Euros) to only the people that leave the ship, or everyone on the ship? What if you get on and off the ship several times? Do the charge appear on your onboard account, or do you have to hand over 8 Euros when you leave the ship?
  17. I was originally booked on a guaranteed inside stateroom but opted to upgrade when I received the email offer to move to an obstructed outside view. Since it was only $39/pp and I liked the idea of natural light to know what time of day it is when I wake up (😆), I went for it... Now that it's done, I can't help wondering if I sacrificed privacy. From what I understand, it's a full ceiling to floor window obstructed by a life boat... Does anyone know if crew members typically work on/in the life boats while cruising? Is privacy going to be concern at all if the curtains are open? Thanks in adva
  18. Hello All, New to Cruise Critic and looking for some advice. I booked a Holland America 12-day Adriatic Dream Cruise from Venice to Rome in August 2020 on Nieuw Amsterdam. Initially I booked 2 rooms, an SB (6064) for my husband and I and an SS (6066) for my mother and my 20 year old son. The plan was to have my son stay in whichever room he prefers, and give my mom some space, but my husband says there must be a less expensive way to accomplish these 2 goals. Any advise from seasoned cruisers who travel with their mother and their son and husband? How much ro
  19. Does anyone have the daily papers from a 2019 Caribbean sailing on either Nieuw Amsterdam or Eurodam; either itinerary. Looking at eastern on NA but trying to get a sense of daily activity schedules. Thanks
  20. Hoping someone can assist here... Any scotch drinkers been on the Nieuw Amsterdam recently and know of what Single Malts they might have? I really do prefer single malts over blends, so hoping someone might have an idea for me! Thanks! Warren
  21. We just finished our first HAL cruise, a week on the Nieuw Amsterdam. Already looking to book our next. Because I work for a large university, we can only really travel from about 12/12/20 to 01/10/21. We travel with four of our youngest children(ages 7-17) and usually bring one or two extra with us, so cost is definitely a factor. We LOVED Half Moon Cay. We don't like the itinerary on the Nieuw Amsterdam the week we are looking at (alas, no HMC!); none of us have ever been to any of the ports that the Veendam will sail to that week (Trujillo Honduras, Costa Maya Mexico, Guatemala, and Be
  22. A very busy day in Port Everglades with eight cruise ships in port, one of which is making her first visit to FLL. Eurodam will be at pier 19 (port to) from 0515-1700 and then heading out on a 10-day Panama Canal Sunfarer cruise. Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (02 Dec 0800-1500); Oranjestad, Aruba (04 Dec 1300-2300); Willemstad, Curacao (05 Dec 0800-1600); Panama Canal (Cruising Canal) (07 Dec 0500-0500); Colon, Panama (07 Dec 1500-2000); Puerto Limon, Costa Rica (08 Dec 0730-1700); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (11 Dec a0700) Nieuw Statendam will be pier 2
  23. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at pier 21 (starboard to) from 0545-1700. She is headed out on a 7-day western Caribbean cruise. Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (01 Dec 0800-1600); Falmouth, Jamaica (03 Dec 0800-1700); George Town, Grand Cayman (04 Dec 0800-1600); Key West, Florida (06 Dec 0700-1700); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (07 Dec a0700) Zuiderdam is headed to Freeport for a drydock. She will be at pier 26 (port to) from 0500-1600 but as we all know, ships leaving for drydock do not always leave as scheduled. Also in port are Caribbean Princess at pier 2 from 05
  24. (3:10 p.m.) -- Amsterdam’s decision to impose a tax just on cruise passengers has led to a 40 percent reduction in the number of calls to the city this year. P&O Cruises, Cunard, MSC Cruises and Cruise & Maritime Voyages pulled out of the port earlier this year when Amsterdam city council imposed an €8 per 24-hour tax on cruise ... View the full article
