  1. A year ago today, we were in Barcelona on the Nieuw Statendam. We used Barcelona Day Tours and did the Barcelona Highlights tour. I'd actually never had a desire to go to Barcelona, however, that stop made me look forward to visiting again (some day). I've never been an architecture person, either, but how could you not be in Barcelona? I was gobsmacked all day long! What a pretty city! We started the day by parallel parking the ship!

  4. Searching through RC to try to find and book a cruise that we had booked for 2020, but had to cancel due to family illness and death. Departure was Amsterdam and had ports in Greenland and Iceland. I can find Greenland and Iceland under ports of call, but I can't find a cruise for 2021 with these ports. All I could find just had Iceland. I looked at Roll Call threads also to no avail. If anyone can help I will greatly appreciate it. Thank you!
  5. I remember Pat really liking the pasta Carbonara at the very small bakery / restaurant on the Via Veneto in Rome .I think he inhaled that huge plate ! The day before we went to the Opera Serenades at the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj and than the next day to get on board the Nieuw Statendam for her Premier Voyage . Great memories Ann !

  7. This news release just came out today (Sept. 10, 2020) - hopefully good news for future cruises: SEATTLE, Sept. 10, 2020 /CNW/ -- From Greenland to Greece and Iceland to Israel, five Holland America Line ships are set to explore the cultural kaleidoscope of Europe in 2021. The brand's collection of vessels crossing the pond includes Rotterdam, which is slated to debut at the height of the summer Europe season. Joining the fleet's new flagship will be Nieuw Statendam, Westerdam and Zuiderdam, putting two Pinnacle Class ships in the region. Zaandam heads to Europe on the popular "Voyage of the Vikings" itinerary in July. From April through November, the five ships will offer itineraries ranging from seven to 35 days, as well as longer Collectors' Voyages up to 29 days. In addition to transatlantic crossings between Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Europe, the ships will visit the Baltic, British Isles, French and Spanish rivieras, Iberian Peninsula, Mediterranean and Northern Europe including Greenland, Iceland, Norway and the North Cape. "Our guests miss cruising as much as we do, and as we move closer to getting back to doing what we do best, we want everyone to feel confident in planning their European travel with us for next summer," said Gus Antorcha, Holland America Line's president. "At Holland America Line, we are a community of passionate globetrotters. For anyone looking to go to Europe next summer and really connect with a variety of cultures, Holland America Line has put together the most diverse collection of itineraries that embraces the entire region." Departure options include Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Athens (Piraeus), Greece; Barcelona, Spain; and Civitavecchia (Rome) and Venice, Italy. The "Voyage of the Vikings" cruise sails roundtrip from Boston, Massachusetts, with a segment departure from Rotterdam, the Netherlands. To give guests more in-depth experiences in some of Europe's most popular cities, select cruises feature overnight calls at Istanbul, Turkey; Reykjavik, Iceland; Piraeus (Athens) and Rhodes, Greece; Rotterdam, the Netherlands; St. Petersburg, Russia; Valletta, Malta; and Venice, Italy. Many of the cruises can be extended into Collectors' Voyages ranging from 14 to 29 days, offering the ultimate European exploration. These artfully crafted longer journeys combine nonrepeating, back-to-back itineraries, enabling guests to visit more ports and spend extra time discovering centuries of art, history and culture. Rotterdam spends maiden season in Northern Europe Rotterdam sails a seven-day Premiere Voyage from Venice to Rome on Aug. 1, 2021, and then moves into a season of Northern Europe cruises roundtrip from Amsterdam. Through October, the ship will offer three seven-day itineraries to Norway, one 14-day Baltic cruise and one 14-day Norway, Iceland and British Isles sojourn. A transatlantic crossing completes the ship's inaugural Europe season with a 14-day voyage from Amsterdam to Fort Lauderdale. Nieuw Statendam cruises to Northern Europe and the Mediterranean In addition to Rotterdam, Nieuw Statendam heads to Northern Europe in 2021. The ship will feature seven-day itineraries roundtrip from Amsterdam through August, along with a 14-day Voyage of the Midnight Sun cruise — placing two Pinnacle-Class ships in Northern Europe at the same time. In addition to Norway, Nieuw Statendam will sail to the Baltic and Northern Isles including Ireland, the U.K. and Iceland on 14-day itineraries. Following its time in Northern Europe, Nieuw Statendam will move to the Mediterranean and cruise roundtrip from Civitavecchia (Rome) on 10-day itineraries to the western part of the region. The ship also offers singular seven-, nine- and 12-day cruises in the Med. 'Voyage of the Vikings' sets sail on Zaandam The popular "Voyage of the Vikings" that traces the route of ancient explorers returns in 2021. The 35-day journey, departing July 17, cruises roundtrip from Boston on Zaandam. The epic itinerary calls at ports in the U.S., Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland and Ireland, making it easy to visit Europe without international air travel. Two shorter segments from Boston to Rotterdam (16 days) or from Rotterdam to Boston (19 days) are available. Two ships offer full Mediterranean seasons in 2021 Holland America Line is placing two ships in the Mediterranean full-time for the season. The 2021 program will be anchored by Westerdam and Zuiderdam sailing a combination of longer 11- and 12-day cruises from Civitavecchia, Venice, Barcelona and Athens. The ships will visit popular ports like Istanbul; Mykonos, Greece; and Monte Carlo, Monaco; along with bucket-list jewels like Koper, Slovenia; Limassol, Cyprus; and Rijeka, Croatia. Many of the itineraries have an overnight in Venice or Athens at the beginning or end of the cruise so guests have more time to experience all those cities have to offer. From April through October, Westerdam offers an extensive season of 12-day Mediterranean cruises roundtrip from Venice or between Venice and Athens or Barcelona. Two seven-day itineraries with Saturday departures in July offer weeklong Greece and Turkey adventures, while a 12-day "Holy Land and Ancient Kingdoms" itinerary roundtrip from Venice in May charts a course for Haifa (Tel Aviv) and Ashdod (Jerusalem), Israel. Zuiderdam's full Mediterranean season also includes cruises roundtrip from Venice or between Venice and Athens or Barcelona. The ship explores the Adriatic Sea, eastern and western Med, and Greek Isles on 12-day itineraries.
  8. Here’s our situation. We will arrive 4 days early for our cruise, We would like to stay somewhere close to public transportation, on a canal, not too far from cruise port and centrally located. We do not need a luxury hotel, we usually book boutique type hotels. Any suggestions appreciated. TIA
  9. If you only have 3 days in Amsterdam before your cruise I wouldn’t waste a full day on a rushed trip to Germany. You can easily spend these 3 days in Amsterdam with perhaps a day trip to a nearby place. Another thing to consider is that even though Germany isn’t as big as the USA it’s still a huge country and a diverse country. The north is very different from the south and the eastern part can’t be compared to the western part. So unless you can visit the exact same area your family is from, I don’t really see the point. You might even get the wrong impression. What I mean is that if for instance my family came from San Diego generations ago and I would visit New York now, I would indeed get a glimpse of the USA but I still don’t have any idea about how my family might have lived a hundred of years ago.
  10. I made a harbour tour yesterday and made some pictures from the Damen Shipyard at the Botlek Rotterdam from the Rotterdam and the Amsterdam. Amsterdam was still in dock, Rotterdam was in the water again and was getting a technical inspection and a paint job (a lighter blue on the hull). The Holland Amica Line letters were already gone. Both ships looked very bad (like it has been told here before) from a long period at sea with no cleaning and a just a little maintenance. So sad to see them there. A couple of months ago they were busy cruising and being a safe home for a lot of people...look at them now. Just a small pick from the pictures I've made. Thanks for watching.

  12. After hearing and reading about Oceania’s presumed policy that only ship excursions will be allowed for Amsterdam to Ven, yesterday I called Oceania and my TA and both said that is not true...third party excursions are fine. Although we have time before final payment is due, we all need to hear directly from the top if this information is accurate or not! BTW, our April cruise on Seabourn was cancelled this week by the company. I feel like I’m spinning my wheels starting to organize tours now, [and I spent so many hours on the three cruises that were cancelled in 2020], I want to know whether we will be cancelling or not!
  13. Hi Paul, I know this isn’t the correct board to ask this but I found your messages while I was on the general board for European ports. We are on Marina 28 day day Amsterdam to Venice Sept 20-Oct 16, 2021. While reading various messages, I saw you coordinating several tours in Spain with the same tour company I am exploring. I’ve only been reading the roll call board that is pretty sparsely populated. I’m assuming we are on the same Marina cruise? Your various posts have not included dates that I can see. Do you still have openings on any of the tours you have been organizing? very interested in learning more. Many thanks! Just my husband and myself from the SF Bay Area.
  14. Well Done!!!! Glad you were able to find such a great fare for BC seats. It makes flying so much easier to manage....especially a long flight from Canada to Asia. We did a 14 day from Hong Kong (prior to the current unrest) to Singapore in February 2019 and absolutely loved every moment of it. Spent a few days in Singapore after the cruise for sightseeing. Your AMA cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam sounds like it was a 14 day sailing the Danube AND Rhine?? I'll bet it truly was spectacular!!

  16. The charters and group sailings organisations have been slowly updating their plans, so the information listed here may change over the coming months. The information on the HAL website is sometimes contradictory to the information posted by charter organisations (i.e. some dates which are shown as charters on the organiser's website is still available to book on the HAL website). Also there are gaps in the itineraries for various ships (e.g. Veendam April 28th to May 8th 2021 which shows no cruises and I cannot find any charters!). Zaandam and Amsterdam have missed their dry docks which were scheduled to happen in April and May 2020 and as yet no updated scheduled dates are available. 18. Thank you for the Daily Rich. Something I have learned during the Covid pandemic is that guide dogs have no sense of social distancing and I doubt if white canes do either so part of safety will be for those of us with sight to take care around the blind. Handwashing day is particularly appropriate now and is maintaining breast health while getting to doctors is more complicated. Oh, that quote is SO true. Not a fan of black bean soup. 21. Good afternoon and thanks to Rich for the Daily and keeping track of the fleet. Thanks Roy, for the lists and sharing your travels with us. Don't know if bald is free, but it is progressively less expensive 🧑>👴>👨‍🦲 Thanks to all for sharing the beautiful flowers. One of the things that impressed us on our first trip to Alaska were the flowers seemingly everywhere you looked. Here are a couple from our visit to Chena village. One from Noordam And one from Nieuw Amsterdam Thanks once again to everyone who helps make this thread so interesting, uplifting, and positive every day. Please, stay safe and healthy. Lori & George

  24. Alaska Cruisetour. Almost identical itineraries....which would you choose. Princess Star Vs. Holland Nieu Amsterdam. Princess Mini Suite Vs. Holland Signature Suite. Cook Hotel Vs. Westermark. McKinley Lodge Vs. Princess Denali. So, I know that Cook hotel is better, but it's really just one night. It really boils down to the ship details. All stop in Hubbard Glacier AND Glacier Bay. All leave from Whittier and end in Vancouver. Which cruise is better? We are active seniors (golfers), etc. Thanks
