  1. Happy Thanksgiving! What are the current shows on the main stage on the Nieuw Statendam? We’re sailing on her in a few weeks and am curious !
  2. Looking at obstructed ocean view cabin 4121 (Deck 4 Upper Promenade). Looks to be between two lifeboats and have cabins above and photo gallery below; but also appears slightly on the edge of a galley. Is there any view or is it totally blocked? Is this a quiet location or is there noise from galley below? I figure the photo gallery is pretty quiet, but kitchen operations not so sure. Eurodam is sister ship and should be very similar.
  3. Been many years since our last cruise. Will be booking a Caribbean cruise and will be first time using HAL. I've been reading numerous posts about the lack of things to do onboard. Is there a place where I could find a copy of one of the daily/weekly onboard activities/entertainment? Years ago I would copy and paste to this site our particular ships' activity daily paper for others to see what's going on. Our previous cruises have only been on Princess and it was always nice to have a daily scavenger hunt, or trivia games, etc. Any help would be appreciated!
  4. We arrived at Port Everglades yesterday at 10:30. No traffic, no waiting , in boarding group 1. Boarded at 11:30 Easy peasy SS verry nice. our first dinner was at Canneleto. Never again. We were first seated And 3 and a half hours later still there. No thanks We didn’t like the food either. In Key West now. Last night we missed all activities. But I have high hopes.

  6. We are in a Neptune in a few weeks on the Nieuw Amsterdam and I was wondering what to expect with getting Club Orange added on. It seems that being Neptunes we get most of the items anyway (we are familiar with the Neptune perks), but was wondering if we should be aware of anything extra? Also, we have Early Fixed dining, so will we be assigned a Club Orange area table or just the normal ones? Thanks

  8. I understand that what is left of the library is now in the Crow's Nest. Are there any computers that passengers can use?
  9. Our group of 8 ,with luggage, will need transportation from the airport to the cruise terminal. We do not want to take the train, due to mobility issues, and would rather go together to the ship. Are there companies that offer transportation in mini busses or large transit vans that can accommodate all of us ? Thanks for your help.
  10. Hi Everyone, I'm curious to know if any of the shops on the Nieuw Amsterdam sell smart watches (preferably Samsung) or if this is something I should look for in port? thanks! Warren
  11. Taking the Thanksgiving cruise next week on the NS. I am also trying to get a little Christmas shopping done. If anyone has been on the NS recently, do you know if they sell Garmin or Fitbit fitness trackers in the watch shop, or other shop onboard? Any opinion as to whether they are any kind of a deal would also be appreciated. I know that it's probably same or cheaper to buy online, but if it's close and I can talk to a human, that's a benefit. Recent physical limitations prevent me from doing alot of brick and mortar shopping this year. Will appreciate it!
  12. My wife and I will be traveling by train (Thalys) from Amsterdam to Paris next spring after a river cruise. In getting ready to book our train tickets (which I know we can't do until four months out, and also that we should do as early as possible for the best fares), I've of course read the relevant parts of The Man in Seat 61's invaluable web site, and done some mock bookings on the Thalys site itself as well as on the site that The Man in Seat 61 recommends for those of us not in Europe, b-europe.com, because, he says, Thalys sometimes has problems with non-European credit cards. I do have a few questions that I hope folks can answer here. We intend to buy seats in what Thalys calls Comfort Class (the train cars are configured 2 x 1 across). It appears from the mock bookings and everything I've read that while we will have reserved seats, we cannot pick our specific seats, is that correct? (And if it is, how crazy is that in this day and age!) Assuming then that we can't pick our specific seats, is there a way to ensure that we are sitting next to each other, rather than across a table from each other? I see that you can express certain "seating preferences" on both booking sites, but is it really only a preference (as it says), not something we can count on? (I have a concern here because one of us is quite tall, and it would seem better, in terms of leg room, not to be across from each other at a table, but please let me know if you have thoughts about that.) In terms of the "seating preferences" that one can choose (for two people) on the booking sites, the Thalys site has one called "Club 2" and another called "Duo vis-a-vis." I assume "Duo vis-a-vis" is two people sitting across from each other, but is there a table? And what is Club 2? (A Google search yields conflicting answers about which of these has a table, and what exactly Club 2 is.) The b-europe.com site has these preferences: "seats next to each other," "seats facing each other," and "seats around a table." Those seem a bit clearer, except is there a table for "seats facing each other"? (Two people can't sit "around" a table, hence my confusion.) In any event what, if anything, can we do to be sure we aren't sitting across from each other at a table? Any thoughts about using b-europe.com rather than Thalys for this booking? If you are non-European, have you had any trouble using your credit card on the Thalys site? And if you have any other advice or tips to offer, please let me know. Thanks in advance for any help!
  13. Has anyone been in obstructed view cabin 4061 on the Nieuw Amsterdam? Can you hear noise coming from the screening room that is on the deck directly below this cabin? Thanks.
  14. Aft deck 8 cabins are available for a cruise we are interested in, but I am concerned about noise from the pool deck above. Has anyone stayed in VC8166 or VC8175 on the Nieuw Statendam? Thank you for your help!
  15. When planning this river cruise, we did not find a lot of information on this particular ship. I hope this information is helpful to those who may be considering a Gate 1 River Cruise or this particular ship. We arrived in Amsterdam 3 days pre-cruise and stayed in an AirBNB in Utretch. Between train and bus service we arrived at our destination in about an hour. We were able to spend a full day in Amsterdam and another day in Utretch. We arrived at the Monarch Countess 2 hours before official boarding time, but were told we could leave our luggage if we wanted to walk around outside for a bit, which we did. When we returned, we checked in and were escorted to our cabin. The cabin was roomy with plenty of storage space - 3 closets, 2 night stands and a few smaller cabinets. We were able to store our luggage under the beds. We had a phone, refrigerator, tv and a safe. The bathroom shower had a door not a shower curtain. Included was a hair dryer, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, bar soap and body lotion. These were replaced as needed. Meals in the dining room were one seating only. with open seating. Breakfast and lunch were buffet style with each day having one special you could order from the kitchen. There was a cook making eggs or omelets to order for breakfast and we did take advantage of that. There was plenty to eat from the buffet, but I did order the Eggs Benedict special for breakfast one morning and was craving a cheeseburger towards the end of the cruise so ordered that for lunch. Dinner had two options for the entree, appetizer and soup, and also a choice of desserts. Wait staff came by at dinner with a red and a white wine which was included. You could also order a beer which was included. There was one night when the wine and beer were offered in the lounge for one extra hour. Other than dinner there was a charge for all drinks. Different drink specials were offered at the bar during the week.Entertainment on the ship low key. The Activity Director was very friendly and easy going. He set up some music trivia games, and a contest for most popular dance songs. He also taught some basic dance steps. A duo came on board at one of the ports. She sang (very well) and he played piano. There was also another local performer which I did not see. There were a some games played during the day - putt putt golf, darts. In the evening the Activity DIrector would DJ, and played music the audience wanted. So there was a lot of line dancing and some classic rock thrown in for good measure. He also had a 30 minute stretch / exercise class each morning which my travel companion took advantage of. I preferred the extra sleep! The Tour Director gave a port talk each evening before dinner covering not only the logistics of the tours but also some things to see and do if we were out on our own. She gave a talk of the division of East and West Germany and its' reunification. During one stretch of travel down the river, she gave commentary along the way as to the villages and castles we were passing and talked about the Legend of Lorilei. She was also on the included tours and was always available. There is also a masseusse on board and I took advantage of that. Pricing was in line with what I pay at home and there was no sales pitch at the end!Service was amazing! Front desk personnel were great and had answers for any question we had (and we had many) We did not purchase any transfers and they were able to get us a shared taxi to take us to the train station when we arrived in Basel. Our cabin steward took really good care of us and was always pleasant and smiling when we saw her in the morning or afternoon. The wait staff were really good. With everyone arriving for meals at approximately the same time, I'm sure it was difficult, but they managed to keep everyone happy. The two bartenders did double duty as wait staff. The Maitre'd was always on the floor for all meals and would stop and ask if anyone needed anything and made sure it happened. One evening neither my friend or I liked the wines being served. As the Maitre'd came by to refill our glasses, we stated that we were not having wine that evening because neither choice was to our liking. He came back with a different bottle and had us try it. Since we liked that one, he made sure to come back around and refilled it later during the meal.Never having been to this area, we opted to take the ships included city tours so that we could get an overview of the locations. These were either bus tours with a guide, or a walking tour with a guide. We did opt for the Marksberg Castle Tour as we each wanted to see a castle. Because of the timing of the ports we were not able to spend a lot of time in a couple of places as we had to be back on board by noon to sail to the next location and then a stop in the evening. Most tours left between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m.We started in Amsterdam on Sunday and did the following ports: Tuesday: Cologne; Wednesday: Koblenz (1/2 day) then Rudesheim; Thursday: Manheim (1/2 day) then Speyer; Friday: Strasbourg; Saturday: Breisach; Sunday disembarked in Basel. All in all we had a great experience. It was quite a bit different from the ocean cruises I have been on and the time structure took some getting used to. I would definitely do another river cruise.

  17. Had dinner with a group of five people at the Caneletto. 2 people were two stars. Two were 4 stars, and I am five stars. My four star friends paid the bill thinking it would be 9.50 pp. 50% discount from 19. Caneletto billed him the whole bill, but each meal was billed at the legitimate discount rate. Two at full price. Three at 50%. He was a little disappointed ,but I am glad they are checking. I have read posts where it was said who ever pays the bill gets their discount on the whole tab.

  19. Looking at the Canada/NE US itinerary and trying to decide which to take. Any opinions for me please?
  20. Are the "J" cabins (i.e. inside) on Dolphin deck (level 1) the same size as those on the Main deck (level 2)? I am trying to decide between the 2 decks. I don't want a sideways cabin. thanks in advance!
  21. which ports during that cruise are tender ports ? thanks for the info. michael
  22. Wondering about some family centric entertainment or activities on Nieuw Amsterdam. Do they show movies at night on the pool deck? If so, does anyone have a recent selection just to get an idea? Does Holland America have fly-in headliner/variety show acts in the theater ever? Do they have family arts and crafts, shows, etc? For those that have used the kids club, how did you like it? This pertains to a standard 7 day Caribbean cruise. Have the opportunity to book a trip aboard through a prize redemption program.
  23. Ever fancied one of those mini-cruises? Those trips which hop from a UK port to locations on the North European coast are often advertised at very enticing prices? Stuart Howells has been talking about his recent mini-cruise to Amsterdam. Does this short holiday make for a great first cruise? And is it an ideal way to see Amsterdam? Play his audiogram on YouTube to hear his review and opinions. Let us know if you'd been on a similar cruise, especially if you went on a Cunard ship. Happy Cruising! 24. I have been on neither of these ships. I’m looking at a Canada New England itinerary. I’m looking for the good and not so good about either ships. Thanks in advance.
