  1. (3:10 p.m.) -- Amsterdam’s decision to impose a tax just on cruise passengers has led to a 40 percent reduction in the number of calls to the city this year. P&O Cruises, Cunard, MSC Cruises and Cruise & Maritime Voyages pulled out of the port earlier this year when Amsterdam city council imposed an €8 per 24-hour tax on cruise ... View the full article
  2. For a 7 day Caribbean itinerary how many production shows will there be in the theater, and how many headliner/variety type shows? I was recently on a 8 day Carnival cruise and a few nights they had nothing in theater. No fly in headliner or variety shows. 1 night was an audience participation game show that was lame. Only 1 show in 8 days had a live band with it. Not a fan of piped in music; just "professional karaoke". Looking for some new experiences; we are not late night partiers but would appreciate some good shows, music, and variety in entertainment say
  3. My husband and I joined by life long friends sailed last week. We are 2 stars but have not sailed HAL in several years. We primarily look at itinerary and sail dates to choose our cruises. We got a good price on this cruise so the 4 of us jumped on the good deal. All of us have cruised different lines. We booked a guaranteed VH but were moved up to a VB. I was sad to see the decline in service throughout the ship. We never went into the main dining room as we were assigned 5:30 seating. We asked to be switched and were told we could not switch, so we ate in the Lido. Service
  4. Happy Thanksgiving! What are the current shows on the main stage on the Nieuw Statendam? We’re sailing on her in a few weeks and am curious !
  5. Looking at obstructed ocean view cabin 4121 (Deck 4 Upper Promenade). Looks to be between two lifeboats and have cabins above and photo gallery below; but also appears slightly on the edge of a galley. Is there any view or is it totally blocked? Is this a quiet location or is there noise from galley below? I figure the photo gallery is pretty quiet, but kitchen operations not so sure. Eurodam is sister ship and should be very similar.
  6. Been many years since our last cruise. Will be booking a Caribbean cruise and will be first time using HAL. I've been reading numerous posts about the lack of things to do onboard. Is there a place where I could find a copy of one of the daily/weekly onboard activities/entertainment? Years ago I would copy and paste to this site our particular ships' activity daily paper for others to see what's going on. Our previous cruises have only been on Princess and it was always nice to have a daily scavenger hunt, or trivia games, etc. Any help would be appreciated!
  7. We arrived at Port Everglades yesterday at 10:30. No traffic, no waiting , in boarding group 1. Boarded at 11:30 Easy peasy SS verry nice. our first dinner was at Canneleto. Never again. We were first seated And 3 and a half hours later still there. No thanks We didn’t like the food either. In Key West now. Last night we missed all activities. But I have high hopes.

She is doing a 7-day Tropical Caribbean cruise. Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (25 No
  9. We are in a Neptune in a few weeks on the Nieuw Amsterdam and I was wondering what to expect with getting Club Orange added on. It seems that being Neptunes we get most of the items anyway (we are familiar with the Neptune perks), but was wondering if we should be aware of anything extra? Also, we have Early Fixed dining, so will we be assigned a Club Orange area table or just the normal ones? Thanks
  10. Nieuw Amsterdam will be in Port Everglades from 0530-1700. She will be at pier 26 (starboard to) before leaving on a 7-day Tropical Caribbean cruise. In the continuing weird travels of Oasis OTS she will be
  11. I understand that what is left of the library is now in the Crow's Nest. Are there any computers that passengers can use?
  12. Our group of 8 ,with luggage, will need transportation from the airport to the cruise terminal. We do not want to take the train, due to mobility issues, and would rather go together to the ship. Are there companies that offer transportation in mini busses or large transit vans that can accommodate all of us ? Thanks for your help.
  13. Hi Everyone, I'm curious to know if any of the shops on the Nieuw Amsterdam sell smart watches (preferably Samsung) or if this is something I should look for in port? thanks! Warren
  14. Taking the Thanksgiving cruise next week on the NS. I am also trying to get a little Christmas shopping done. If anyone has been on the NS recently, do you know if they sell Garmin or Fitbit fitness trackers in the watch shop, or other shop onboard? Any opinion as to whether they are any kind of a deal would also be appreciated. I know that it's probably same or cheaper to buy online, but if it's close and I can talk to a human, that's a benefit. Recent physical limitations prevent me from doing alot of brick and mortar shopping this year. Will appreciate it!
  15. My wife and I will be traveling by train (Thalys) from Amsterdam to Paris next spring after a river cruise. In getting ready to book our train tickets (which I know we can't do until four months out, and also that we should do as early as possible for the best fares), I've of course read the relevant parts of The Man in Seat 61's invaluable web site, and done some mock bookings on the Thalys site itself as well as on the site that The Man in Seat 61 recommends for those of us not in Europe, b-europe.com, because, he says, Thalys sometimes has problems with non-European credit cards.
  16. Has anyone been in obstructed view cabin 4061 on the Nieuw Amsterdam? Can you hear noise coming from the screening room that is on the deck directly below this cabin? Thanks.
  17. Aft deck 8 cabins are available for a cruise we are interested in, but I am concerned about noise from the pool deck above. Has anyone stayed in VC8166 or VC8175 on the Nieuw Statendam? Thank you for your help!
  18. When planning this river cruise, we did not find a lot of information on this particular ship. I hope this information is helpful to those who may be considering a Gate 1 River Cruise or this particular ship. We arrived in Amsterdam 3 days pre-cruise and stayed in an AirBNB in Utretch. Between train and bus service we arrived at our destination in about an hour. We were able to spend a full day in Amsterdam and another day in Utretch. We arrived at the Monarch Countess 2 hours before official boarding time, but were told we could leave our luggage if we wanted to walk around outsi

The Port Everglades schedule shows her arriving at 0230
  20. Had dinner with a group of five people at the Caneletto. 2 people were two stars. Two were 4 stars, and I am five stars. My four star friends paid the bill thinking it would be 9.50 pp. 50% discount from 19. Caneletto billed him the whole bill, but each meal was billed at the legitimate discount rate. Two at full price. Three at 50%. He was a little disappointed ,but I am glad they are checking. I have read posts where it was said who ever pays the bill gets their discount on the whole tab.

  22. Looking at the Canada/NE US itinerary and trying to decide which to take. Any opinions for me please?
  23. Are the "J" cabins (i.e. inside) on Dolphin deck (level 1) the same size as those on the Main deck (level 2)? I am trying to decide between the 2 decks. I don't want a sideways cabin. thanks in advance!
  24. which ports during that cruise are tender ports ? thanks for the info. michael
  25. Wondering about some family centric entertainment or activities on Nieuw Amsterdam. Do they show movies at night on the pool deck? If so, does anyone have a recent selection just to get an idea? Does Holland America have fly-in headliner/variety show acts in the theater ever? Do they have family arts and crafts, shows, etc? For those that have used the kids club, how did you like it? This pertains to a standard 7 day Caribbean cruise. Have the opportunity to book a trip aboard through a prize redemption program.
