  1. Here's the list I'm seeing of the cruise ships Carnival has sold so far. This accounts for 17 of the total 18 ships that Carnival has said they were going to sell. The sale of the two Princess ships was confirmed yesterday. Costa Atlantica Costa Mediterranea Costa Victoria Costa neoRomantica Amsterdam Rotterdam Maasdam Veendam Oceana Carnival Fantasy Carnival Inspiration Carnival Imagination Carnival Fascination Pacific Dawn Pacific Aria Sun Princess Sea Princess
  2. Ah, good for back to back. A German cruise info website has stated that river cruise lines will mostly still do much of the Netherlands including Amsterdam with "scenic sailings", i.e. along the skyline without stopping. There is even talk of stepping on land and do coach trip sightseeing without stopping to avoid quarantine. Weird. The river level at Kaub has fallen below 100cm, but rain in the Alps from tomorrow and rain along the valley during much of next week indicate a good rise to pleasant levels, after a short further drop. notamermaid
  3. After our Norway itinerary was cancelled for next year, I am scrambling to consider other options. Please compare and critique these two itineraries. A) 7 Nights Amsterdam Eidfjord Molde Geiranger Bergen Amsterdam B) 8 Nights Amsterdam Flam Alesund Skjolden Olden Bergen Amsterdam In your opinion, which one wins? Is Geiranger that much of a must-see that it automatically wins out over Itinerary B? Thanks in advance!

  5. Anyone have any recommendations for private tours of Amsterdam? We’re looking for a tour of the city and are not interested in a walking tour.

  7. She could very well be for sale but, as of today, she's still part of the Princess fleet. She, like Amsterdam, ended her 2020 world cruise in Fremantle although she ultimately wound up taking 115 of her pax, first to Honolulu and then to L.A.
  8. Agree with the above - the Signature Suites on the Nieuw Amsterdam are far superior to the Vista Suites on the Konigsdam. The Vista Suites are essentially slightly larger standard balcony rooms with the word "suite" slapped on so they can charge more. The balcony space of the side facing Signature Suite will be SIGNIFICANTLY larger (both in width and depth) with two padded armchairs and footstools and a dining height table, where the aft facing Vista Suite will be only mariginally deeper than a standard balcony and will have two standard mesh balcony chairs, possibly one footstool, and a low small side table. There is no comparison and if itinerary, price and perks comparable I'd go Signature Suite on the NA all day, every day!!!!!!!!!!
  9. Not sure I understand your options, but let me give it a try. If you are considering an aft facing cabin on deck 7 on the Konginsdam (K), you either must take a Neptune (SB) or a Vista Suite (AS). I ASSUME you are looking at the AS. On the Nieuw Amsterdam (NA) the deck 6 Signatures can be SS, SY or SZ. Of these, I personally like the SY angled out cabins 6108 or 6113, as you can see forward plus they are a bit larger. Between the two options, I would go for the NA Signature, as it is about 75% larger than the AS suite (Vista) you would get on the K. Of course, you will not have the nice aft view (I have never found them to be noisy), but the difference in cabin size more than makes up for it IMO. PLUS, being in a Signature, you have a good chance of being offered an upsell to a Neptune for a reasonable price. In answering this, I assumed that the cabin prices were about the same for your two options......
  10. Y'all have been wonderful with the information. Another question......I was thinking of getting an aft cabin on deck 7 on Koningsdam or a signature suite on deck 6 on Nieuw Amsterdam. I think I'm leaning towards Koningsdam. Is it worth it to get an aft facing cabin? And are they really noisy?
  11. Last November we spent 20 days aboard the Nieuw Statendam cruising the Western and Eastern Mediterranean. The only instance of feeling crowded was not actually onboard. Our port call in Kotor required a 15-20 minute tender ride to shore. Disembarking was staggered by numbered group (suite and 5-star mixed in) which was fine as we were staged in a lounge. But returning, we needed to stand in line onshore for an hour. Two local tenders and two of the ship's tenders were used. There may have been an operational problem as the other ship's tenders remained in their davits. The issue of course was the distance required for the tender ride and time involved. The All Onboard last tender was 1630 - but we got in line at 1520 and did not get aboard the tender until 1625! But I wonder if this was the SOP for this port? Our port call for Monaco was cancelled but replaced by Ajaccio, Corsica which went smoothly with no noticible difference from other cruises we have taken, and Santorini tendering is done by the Boatmen there which works like a clock. Does the additional 400 passengers over a Signature/Vista -class make that much difference? The Pinnacle-class is just a modified Vista-class after all.

We were very glad to see her in port and ready to go as the Star was still in the ship yard when we left home for Copenhagen Regal Princess 9/1997 - Alaska I was sure I would never cruise again, nowhere to escape the crowds and way too structured for my tastes. Then I discovered private tours, open seating and balcony cabins!
  13. Here is a photo tour of Vista Suite #5135 on the Koningsdam. This cabin is in the mid-ship "pop-out" section. We received a complimentary updgrade to this suite http://travelingwiththejones.com/2017/01/28/a-look-inside-a-vista-suite-on-holland-americas-koningsdam-cruise-ship/ When you are upgraded to a suite, you do not get bonus Mariner Days but you do have to pay the higher daily gratuities amount for suite guests. While we enjoyed the Vista Suite, it probably would not pay a premium for it over this Cat V Verandah Stateroom #5072 on the Nieuw Statendam: http://travelingwiththejones.com/2019/03/07/a-look-inside-verandah-stateroom-5072-on-holland-americas-nieuw-statendam/

  16. Can anyone recommend a hotel near the Anne Frank House. I have a client that cannot walk too far and would like something in that area. The next day she is going on Viking and can get transportation. Thank you.
  17. I am a Koningsdam fan as well. Love the Rolling Stone Rock Room, BBKings, the Dutch Cafe and the showers in the stateroom are the best, no more curtains sticking to you, beautiful glass shower.........the service is just what you expect from HAL. The Nieuw Amsterdam is a beautiful ship, a little smaller, but definitely a great option as well. You can’t go wrong with either ship and Alaska is absolutely amazing. enjoy your cruise.
  18. Like many here these changes will be a hurricane impact to our 10 cruise 2021 schedule, Jewel B2B Amsterdam 7/3, Brilliance B2B 8/30 Miami/Boston and 11/2 plus a question on the Jewel TA B2B on 3/22. I will be on the phone a long time working on theses changes assuming this happens as noted. Stay safe everyone, Phil
  19. Well we have a jewel cruise from Amsterdam to Norway and Iceland booked which we were looking forward to - I guess (if this information is correct) this means it will be cancelled. Will not be happy. NCL do a nice version of this cruise.
  20. We'll be in Amsterdam next August, and the Movenpick, HAL's hotel of choice, is $1275 for the nights, double occupancy. There are many others there for less than half. If you're a member of a certain triple-letter auto club, check out their rates. Although your avatar doesn't agree with your nickname 🙂 , be sure to check that the hotels have elevators and other amenities (you can filter for this at the auto club site). Some hotels don't mention elevators or some other amenities like safes in the rooms that worth having. Happy travels!

  22. It is much cheaper to book on your own. HAL usually has cheap air and in many locations the shore excursions are competitive but I have never seen a good hotel deal with HAL. I was looking at Boston the other day and I can book the Copley for much cheaper than HAL. I have looked at the Amsterdam hotels (I was supposed to sail there this past summer). It is a good hotel with good location but again, you can get it cheaper on your own. If you prefer to use HAL it is very easy to go to the website, you will need your booking number and book the hotel yourself. I use a TA but do book my post and pre travel directly
  23. May is a good time for whales as those that migrate are brining their frisky calves back to Alaska waters. There are a number of whales in Auke Bay, Juneau that do not migrate. Every whale excursion guarentees you will see a whale or recive a big rebate. I like the Koningisdam but that means 500 more passengers competing for the same excursions. If you choose the Nieuw Amsterdam, you will miss out on one restaurant, NY Deli/Pizza, and the Ductch Cafe that are available on the Koningsdam. I will be on both the North and Southbound cruises on the NA in May 2021 and recommend for your intital visit (most return to experience and photograph the scenery they missed): Juneau: dogsledding in the snow or whale watching Ketchikan: Crab Fishing with lots of eagle photo ops or Crab Feasting with flightseeing Skagway: dogsleeding in the snow or train ride
  24. We "felt" less crowded on the Koningsdam & Nieuw Statendam than other HAL ships.....They are our preferred ship primarily because of that "feeling"... easy to get around and no lines.
  25. As always, I'll wait before reacting. Our JOS cruise is June 21 out of Barcelona. Big plans went around that with a car rental, driving to Belgium a few days first to visit DD, then back to Amsterdam. If this follows through, glad we have not yet bought airfare!
