  1. Thank you for posting the daily. It appears they raised the Sip and Savor from $5 to $7. I hope it is slow to go fleetwide, lol. We board the Amsterdam on the 28th.
  2. The first cruise I paid for myself was in late 1994 (I think it was around Thanksgiving) aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam III. I'm pretty sure it was a 14 day Cruise in the Caribbean and I was sharing a large outside cabin (I think they called called a "mini-suite") with my grandfather, who was 94 at the time but still in superior condition. Earlier that year I had successfully completed the defense of my doctoral dissertation, and this seemed like a great way to celebrate. This was was my grandfather's last sea voyage, and he had a great time showing me around the ship and some of the islands. As for how much it cost, for some reason I seem to recall that I paid $1400, which was an enormous sum to me at that time. Granddad took care of all of our onboard expenses, for which I was deeply grateful.
  3. Sojourn 2018 B2B Alaska and America’s Gold Coast Vol. 15 #3 – Ketchikan Today, I took the tor Ketchikan’s Cultural Discovery tour. Ketchikan was Alaska’s First City and I was ready to enjoy Ketchikan’ vivid naïve culture. First stop was the Totem Heritage Center which contains one of he largest authentic collections of totems in the world. With the dark, overcast skies outside, the interior lighting was not sufficient for hand-held photography. The museum vast collection of poles and artifacts, many of which are hundreds of years old. Then we enjoyed a scenic drive to Potlatch Park, where we explored several centuries of Alaskan history. Starting with a collection of antique cars. Then we took an awe-inspiring trip back to the 19th century to explore a fully re-created Native Alaskan village and peer into one of the homes to see the diorama of how native Alaskans actually lived in the 1800s. 4. Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam will be spending Labor Day in Juneau. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215 and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. Typical Juneau weather is back for this week with mostly cloudy skies and a good chance of rain each day. The prediction for Monday is for overcast skies with some showers. High will only be 55F/13C and the low 51F/10C. Sunrise is at 5:59 am and sunset at 7:55 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  5. Firstly as has already been pointed out, Direct does not mean non-stop. It's any flight with the same flight number (that may make any number of stops along the way). As for flights, go to Wikipedia, search for "Venice Airport", and there's a section for "airlines and destinations" which will answer your question. In a nutshell (north American carriers) Air Canada Rouge: (Seasonal) Montréal–Trudeau, Toronto–Pearson Air Transat: (Seasonal) Montréal–Trudeau, Toronto–Pearson American Airlines: (Seasonal) Chicago–O'Hare, Philadelphia Delta Air Lines: (Seasonal) Atlanta, New York–JFK United Airlines: (Seasonal) Newark https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venice_Marco_Polo_Airport#Airlines_and_destinations I think you're making a huge mistake wanting a non-stop. if you misconnect onto that one non-stop flight per day, there are limited alternatives. If you fly to a major European hub (London, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam), there are many many options to get from there to VCE. Lastly, it's always worth considering alternative airports that may be less expensive, such as Milan(MXP), where it's a pleasant rail journey to Venice. There are even direct trains from Rome's Fumicino airport to Venice now. They do take 4h27m, and stop at Rome, Florence, Bologna, Padova and into Venice.
  6. We did a 7 day cruise to Alaska this summer on Nieuw Amsterdam. Ages in our Group were 70's, 40's, 12 and 16. Everyone had a great time and we loved the ship. Having said that, I have platinum status on Norwegian and have never had a bad cruise or a problem. Not keen on Carnival, ship was dark and dreary and our room was very noisy because of music in the casino below us. Royal Caribbean was just okay but the specialty coffee bar was on the way to the buffet so we could pick up good coffee in the morning, unlike Nieuw Amsterdam where you had to make your way to the top floor to get a special coffee. Princess was massively overcrowded but we did like Vines, the wine bar for the tapas. Haven't been on Celebrity yet. Loved the Celestial Crystal cruise around Cuba but a small ship and not for kids although the production shows were the best I've ever seen. Like you, we pick the cruise for the itinerary but I hope to sail on HAL again.
  7. We have not sailed on the N. Amsterdam, but distilled water has been available on the other HAL ships on which we've sailed. I order in advance and it is waiting for us in the room. Very convenient!

  9. I have not sailed on Nieuw Statendam yet; Nieuw Amsterdam 2 or 3 times and thought it was a great ship. I did a 18 day Southeast Asia cruise on NCL Star about 3 years ago. In my review of the Star, I likened it to the Staten Island ferry. I realize that cruise line comparisons are very subjective but in terms of food quality, shipboard amenities and design and service, my experience is that Nieuw Amsterdam is vastly superior to the Star and I'd expect the same would hold true for Nieuw Statendam.
  10. First cruise was in 1987. I remember my cost perfectly .... nothing. I won the cruise through work with HSC, air fare and many other amenities included (plus spending money). A group of 200 of us for the first one. Yup, we were some of the infamous groups. Many asked our leader which cruise we were on next so they could book 😉 We were a bit of fun on board. 😄 HAL was our 2nd cruise (same price) on the lovely old Nieuw Amsterdam. That’s when I fell in love with HAL. I didn’t pay for a cruise until just under a decade later when I took DH on his first cruise on the Volendam 😄
  11. We are boarding her next week and my husband wants to know where mass is held. I am sure it is in the daily newsletter but he wants to be prepared. Thanks for any information you can pass on to us.
  12. I can certainly give you our booking number so you can send us flowers for our stateroom! 11/26 on Nieuw Amsterdam! 😃 😉 I have been on about 4 times today with no problems using Chrome (still trying to get reasonably priced flights!)
  13. They ought send the MAASDAM back to the St. Lawrence run and have the AMSTERDAM do the 14 day run in ALASKA
  14. I am booked on a TA with NCL Getaway from Copenhagen to NOLA next month. I booked a tour with them for the Rotterdam port for a tour of Amsterdam. They will transport you to Amsterdam, guide you to a boat ride and leisure on your own for 3 hours. NCL shore excursions staff do not know where you will be dropped off in Amsterdam following the one hour boat ride on the canal. Does anyone know what part of Amsterdam you are dropped off in or the name of the area for the canal tours? Tazzy0831
  15. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING Updated September 13th, 2019 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. This week’s additions and changes are in BOLD and highlighted in aqua (sea colours). 16. Nieuw Amsterdam is scheduled to sail Alaska for summer 2021, replacing Westerdam on the North/South runs between Vancouver and Whitter (HAL and Princess will both use Whittier in 2021 and HAL will no longer sail from Seward). It is assumed Westerdam will go to Europe in place of Nieuw Amsterdam. However, the current HAL schedule shows Westerdam going to Vancouver after her South America season, but that is most likely being revised as the full summer 2021 Alaska schedule has been published and Westerdam does not appear on it at all. Either that or Nieuw Amsterdam is incorrectly listed for Alaska and her sailings will actually be operated by Westerdam. Given the recent Zaandam/Rotterdam swap/shuffle snafu I would not be surprised if the HAL deployment team messed this up as well!!!!!! All of this to say - as of now Nieuw Amsterdam will not be offering a fall 2021 Transatlantic

  18. The FatCat family will once again be on N Amsterdam for 7 nights starting Jan 4, 2020. That promises to be a very busy sail away weekend. And thanks again for creating and maintaining this list.
  19. The thing about this cruise – don’t go to a charity auction, don’t drink that last glass of cheap chardonnay and don’t sit in the front. Do that and you will end up on an Alaska cruise that is no bargain! Well, that is exactly what I did and that’s how we found ourselves on the Nieuw Amsterdam August 17-23 round trip cruise from Vancouver. Our long-suffering and exemplary TA helped me book our cabin, 8125 – Navigator Deck, aft (ish) category VE. (More about the cabin later) and as a side note because this was a “gift certificate” booking she did not get her usual commission. Cheap shot Holland America. After much back and forth we decided to fly into Vancouver from Portland a day in advance and stay at the cruise hotel with HA transfers from airport to hotel and hotel to cruise terminal. We were booked into the Westin Four Seasons for the night of the 16th. Normally speaking I am an extremely organized person, famous for my spreadsheets and lists, but everything about this cruise was abnormal for us. Our son visited just prior to our cruise and took over my packing room until just two days prior to our departure, which really threw me for a loop. I usually start packing a week or so in advance with a detailed list, but not this time. That’s why I plead not guilty (or insanity) for the number of suitcases we took. So, here’s the summary. Holland America – Nieuw Amsterdam RT from Vancouver Stateroom Category VE – Deck 8 Precruise stay -JW Mariott (was supposed to be the Four Seasons) Cruiseline transfers Tracy Arm Excursion through HA Skagway – Dyea Dave – independent booking Ketchikan – no plans. Oh - about us - Kim and Kathy ages 72 and 63 (I was the trophy bride - ha!). We have 7 cruises under our belts and this would be our third to Alaska. We mostly cruise Princess but this will be our second on Holland America. Departure/Vancouver BC We left the house by 8:00 a.m. to drive to our son’s where we would park the car and he would take us to the airport in plenty of time for our 11:30 flight on Horizon/Alaska. Obviously I have too many bags, what was I thinking! We were unable to check-in for the flight the night before so up to the ticket counter we rolled with all our bags. They checked us out and in and yeah! all the bags made the weight limit. For the first time ever we had a drug sniffing dog at security so two by two we marched to pass it, but the line moved swiftly and before long I was debating the “hey, we’re on vacation” Bloody Mary but opted to be a good girl and have a mocha instead. We finally meandered down to the Horizon gates in the A terminal and before long we were boarding, where once again they checked our passports, apparently there have been incidents of passport/id switching after security, so things were tight. This is when I got my first glimpse of the Horizon Air prop jet. Holy Mary, Mother of God I should have had a Bloody Mary and left the rosary in my purse! Thank God it was a short flight. The line for Immigration in Vancouver was like a line at Disneyland and of course we had a problem with the kiosk, but a very nice young man took pity on the old people and helped us through. We retrieved our bags and joined another queue to exit. Finally, we found the cruise counter where after some consultation they decided to put us in a cab and send us to the JW Marriott, but I’d planned it all for the Westin restaurant for dinner and a nearby grocery store for snacks and wine. Oh well, go with the flow. Another nice young woman took us in hand and we joined yet another line to get a taxi. We chatted with a couple from Wisconsin who were taking their first cruise on the Royal Princess (you do meet the nicest people cruising) and then finally it was our turn for a cab. Taxi drivers have me stomping on the backseat brakes but we make it in very little time and in one piece, always a good thing. Our first impression of the Marriott is very nice staff who were extremely helpful. We have yet to meet a cranky person, maybe it has to do with being Canadian? I of course noticed the bar off the lobby, surely it is 5:00 somewhere. We dropped our bags in the room and I am fading, the chocolate scone from PDX has long worn off. So down to the bar for a charcuterie plate and wine. Rejuvenated we head off to find Urban Fare (very much like New Seasons at home). We walk about 4 blocks and there it is, we were able to find waters and Gatorades but no wine. Another helpful person pointed us in the direction of a liquor store which was luckily on the way back to the hotel and we were able to get our two bottles for the cabin. We trek back with our bags and up to the room, which by the by was very luxe (at least by our standards- we could have hosted a party in the shower). I take a short unintended nap and them because Kim wants to see the 6th floor outdoor garden area we head up there. It is very pretty and makes me think about changing the landscaping in our yard, Kim is not amused and tries to distract me with wine. The weather has been overcast and somewhat threatening but warmish and we have a nice view of the stadium/arena and some of the skyline. A glass of wine and I am fading again and all plans for an anniversary dinner out fall by the wayside. We opt for Salt and Honey downstairs for a burger, which was really good. Then back up to the room where I manage dig through the bags for clothes for morning and I fade out for the final time. Tomorrow we’re off for Alaska!

  21. I like Royal for a cruise with my 10 year old granddaughter, she LOVED Harmony of the Seas. We are going again on Oasis of the Seas in April spring break. I went on a ladies trip on Oasis class and it had a different feel for me at least. I am going on Nieuw Statendam in November, we will see. The entertainment on RCI is superb! I have recently started cruising again and primarily do land based trips, so I am not an expert cruiser.
  22. Indeed! Will the concept go the way of the dinosaur? With so few people buying it, is it worthwhile to continue? How long before HAL scraps it? Okay, at this point, I have to admit we bought CO for our upcoming cruise aboard Nieuw Statendam, but we were more or less forced into the decision because of circumstances beyond our control. Anyway, we are anticipating sampling it to see for ourselves whether it's worth it or not.
  23. Remove Rotterdam and add Nieuw Statendam and you have a correct, up to date list.
  24. @4774Papa was probably referring to the policy that allowed smoking on balconies until a couple of years ago. As he said, that policy has finally been changed. More than half of the HAL fleet still allow smoking in the casino, but not on all nights. Unfortunately, and to the dismay of many long-time passengers, this includes the Koningsdam and the Nieuw Statendam, HAL's newest ships. Many hoped that HAL would introduce an inside smoking ban from the beginning, but no such luck. Until someone can teach smoke to remain in one place, it will continue to drift out of the casinos into other nearby venues. Edited to add that the Veendam still has designated smoking nights, unless there has been a further change not reflected as yet on the website.
  25. No, the current management can not. A deadly mistake has been made already (by the Carnival Corp. management): the Koningsdam platform. The HAL crisis is a part of the Carnival Corp. crisis. While a nice ship overall, the Koningsdam is far below the challenge (to build a distinctive brand). The Koningsdam is a unique ship because..... what? Nothing. Does it open new horizons in cruising? No. Does it bring cruising experience to an unparalleled level? No. What was it built for? God knows. The hardware is the base on which everything else is built (service, food, etc.) Put the Koningsdam (2014) next to the Mein Schiff 3 (2014), and see how talent, fantasy, charisma makes difference. What description sounds more promising to an average cruising dummy? From HAL website: About the ships Our stunning ships Our ships are well-appointed yet comfortable, brimming with activities yet not overcrowded. That's why we think they are perfect for exploring. A college student would write a better ad. They "think". They are not sure! Opinions may vary! "Well-appointed" sounds like a thunder. Could any ship be badly-appointed? What they are trying to say ("brimming with activities yet not overcrowded") is a perfect balance of first class amenities and the size of the ship - a golden ratio in cruising (etc., etc.) Compare their marketing mumbling with Celebrity website. Probably they will argue with me on this matter! Helplessness, incompetence. They don't know their ships. They don't love their ship. "Can the current management build a distinctive brand?" Happy cruising!
