  2. Thank you for the Daily, Rich. I don't have a Mother-in-Law, and the days seem a bit on the odd side. Love the Quote, and Lemon Pepper Chicken sounds quite nice as well. My alternate menu suggestion today is Fruit Ceviche, Salisbury Steak, and Mango Crisp, as served on the Amsterdam, October 25, 2017. Today's care list: Mrs Vmax with radiation looming Caregiver Gsel and her DH battling Alzheimers California and Colorado Wildfires, especially East Troublesome Fire and Krazy Kruisers and Joe Today's Celebrations and shoutouts: Mickb, our eyes in Torquay Front Line Health Care Workers Teachers and school workers Fall colors Spring coming to New Zealand A wealth of birthdays and anniversaries Lindaler’s sister and BIL coming for a visit. and Jason out of the hospital and back home Roy
  3. Happy you were able to recover your money. It seems the only ones who have been able to do so have been forced to take the credit card dispute route. My wife and I are supposed to be in Amsterdam today, day 25 of a 28 day European holiday, 13 day Viking Ocean cruise, and 15 days land in 3 countries. Viking, along with 4 different hotel properties happily refunded and/or cancelled our reservations at no charge, that's $0. Our hotel in Amsterdam, The Ambassade was accidentally booked as a non cancellable rate, one quick email to the property and they will not charge my card for the 5 nights we would have been there. Of course the Netherlands is closed to U.S. citizens, so they did the honorable thing for their clients, unlike how Ponant is mistreating theirs. And Hutchinj, you aren't the only one who has been accosted via private message for expressing your views online about the way Ponant and Paul Gauguin have conducted themselves. You, me and I know of at least four or five others who have had to deal with the same.
  4. Hello, I have been looking at a cruse on the Nieuw Statendam for next spring and I am a bit puzzled. What is the difference between a veranda cabin and a vista suite. I see that the veranda has the living area next to the patio and the VS has the bed next to it. Really would like to know what is different before I book. Also if anyone has stayed in a VS what are your thoughts. Thanks
  5. why dont you cancel the cabin you already booked (assuming final payment is not yet due) and just book the haven directly. usually ncl wont take a low ball bid on a haven suite. also, if you want a cruise middle to later in 2021. watch for offers. last month, they ran a 15% off offer for past cruisers, latitude members, and i upgraded to the aft suite with master bedroom and the april cruise from athens, and i upgraded a 2 bedroom suite on the jade july from amsterdam to copenhagen. to a 2 bedroom suite inthe haven area. originally the cost of the haven 2 bedroom was a difference of $1200 per person. me, my wife and our grandson. with the promotion the total cost came out to be the same price so it was a no-brainer to upgrade to the haven
  6. Not an entire city, but the Little Mermaid in Amsterdam. After having trouble finding it, when we finally did it wasdefinitely underwhelming. Maybe I should not have been surprised as Rick Steves has called it the most overrated tourist attraction in the world. (Might not be his exact words.) We did love Amsterdam, though, a truly fascinating city.
  7. Has anyone stayed in the Vista suites on the 8th deck? Especially ones that have an extra upper bed. Thank you.
  8. i just posted this link on the 'Memories on this day' thread. Sailaway of Nieuw Amsterdam on October 19th 2019
  9. With Amsterdam and Rotterdam leaving the fleet, what ship(s) will become the new flagship(s)?
  10. Last year, today, the Nieuw Statendam berthed in Katakolon, Greece. We did a countryside tour and visited an olive farm/packager. Very interesting. After the tour of the processing rooms ,we had an olive oil tasting. Who would have thought that there was a way to taste the oil properly? The lemon olive oil was scrumptious. Then on to Olympia. Seeing the Olympic village, and learning how many people participated each time was mind-boggling.
  11. We are slated to cruise on February 7, 2021, on the Nieuw Statendam (fingers crossed) and have some questions about this ship: 1) Does it have Pickleball? 2) I read somewhere that they have outdoor movies -- where do they show these movies? 3) How many gala nights are usually held on a 10 day cruise? I'm sure I'll think of more questions as time goes by. LOL I check the HAL site every day to see if they have changed their target date for resuming cruises...so far, so good for February 7... Thanks!
  12. Are they going to post the Nieuw Statendam summer 2021 cruises schedule.. Or is this next ship to be sold.

  14. October 24, 2017, the Amsterdam began a 2-day call in Tianjin, port for Beijing. The first day I booked a LONG tour to the wall and the summer palace. It was about a 3-hour drive to the wall with a rest stop on the way. At the stop I saw the longest truck I've ever seen. Made me sure I don't want to drive in China. I first visited the wall in 2001 and it may have been a different spot then. This is the wall as we saw it: Walking the wall is definitely not an easy stroll. And here's one of the guard twers: Our next stop was the Summer Palace where there's a "Long Corridor" that is definitely less strenuous than the wall: It was a VERY long day, close to 9PM when we returned to the ship. 17. Thank you for the Daily, Rich. Interesting that we celebrate 4th Saturday of the month while we have 5 this month. I'll pass on the Bologna but celebrate making a difference and neighbors helping neighbors. Love the quote and menu suggestion. My alternate suggestion is Chilled Kiwi and Melon Soup, Irish Stew, and Apple and Pear Crisp, as served on the Amsterdam October 24, 2017. My alternate menu selections are usually what I had that day but my tour didn't return until almost 9PM so I actually had Lido steak and ice cream. My care list is short today. I hope I haven't missed anything big: Today's care list: Mrs Vmax with radiation looming Caregiver Gsel and her DH battling Alzheimers California and Colorado Wildfires, especially East Troublesome Fire and Krazy Kruisers and Joe Today's Celebrations and shoutouts: Occasional posters including ChaCr Front Line Health Care Workers Teachers and school workers Fall colors Spring coming to New Zealand Sharon’s book club member feeling better and StLouisCruisers son visiting his gram Roy Posted just in time for my walk, shopping at Wegmans, and breakfast at Panera.
  18. HAL loyal guests are interested in when and where ships might begin to sail again with paying passengers, both for their own particular enjoyment and the financial survival of the brand. For example, looking at the dispersed fleet as of today, one could guess that the first sailings for HAL sometime this winter, could be Koningsdam out of San Diego and Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam out of Port Everglades. If successful, they would be followed by Nieuw Statendam out of Amsterdam, and/or Noordam out of Piraeus and Zuiderdam out of Civitavecchia later on in the spring. This, of course, is only total conjecture on my part. But, it could be interesting and/or informative to some. All of the unanswered questions raised earlier would still, of course, apply.
  19. We've just been treated to Queen Victoria passing so I thought i'd share. Couldn't find an appropriate thread though there is one on Queen Elizabeth's position. Anyway, here she is as Ive just spotted her, literally 5 minutes ago passing Cowes on the Isle of Wight.... Not the best of sunsets behind her, she obviously chose the wrong time/date as this was the later part of last week with another cruise ship passing (HAL's Nieuw Statendam)
  20. Last year from the Nieuw Statendam in Corfu, Greece. We toured on our own and enjoyed many beautiful sights. Just the views from the ship were nice. We were in port along with Oceania and Silver Seas, so we were the "poor" boys, but we didn't feel bad!
  21. Which ship is better to do an Alaskan cruise/ And has anyone done the 18 day land/cruise on Holland America? How was is?

  24. I'm incredibly sad that our beloved Amsterdam has been sold. I knew some of the ships would go but not her. So, I know that many of us have fabulous memories of cruises on the Amsterdam so please share them here. Our first time sailing on the Amsterdam was a trans Atlantic from Ft. Lauderdale to Civitavecchia, Italy. I think it was a 16 day sailing and was our longest at the time. I'd also never been to Europe (I wouldn't fly) so it was the perfect way to get there. We absolutely loved the cruise; the elegance, the coffee bar (free at the time, located outside the Wajang Theater), the after dinner coffee's in the Explorers Lounge (also free). Since that cruise (our second on HAL), we've never stopped and have racked up 935 (actual) days on the Amsterdam alone. Needless to say, she was our home away from home and the crew that we got to know well over the years became our extended family. We will sorely miss her. Linda R. ms.
