  1. It was great last year when we were actually docked in Amsterdam. Do you think IJmuiden (? spelling) will put some on? I don’t think we’ll see Amsterdam’s, 40 minutes away, from the ship.
  2. This is the current fleet policy: All staterooms, suites, and verandahs are non-smoking. Guests in violation of our policy will be charged a $250 per day cleaning fee. E-cigarettes are permitted in staterooms, otherwise only in designated smoking areas. Except as otherwise noted, cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted in designated outdoor smoking areas. Designated Smoking Areas Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Oosterdam, Westerdam, Zuiderdam Sea View Bar area Oak Room (Noordam only, including cigar and pipe smoking) Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam Sea View Bar area Casino (designated nights, active players only) Amsterdam, Maasdam, Volendam, Zaandam Sea View Bar area Sports Deck, outside Crow's Nest Casino (designated nights, active players only) Rotterdam, Veendam The Retreat Bar area Sports Deck, outside Crow's Nest Casino (designated nights, active players only) Note that outdoor smoking areas may be designated as port or starboard, varying by ship. 3. My last cruise on Nieuw Statendam had one the cabin.
  4. We are not fans of those mega ships that carry thousands of passengers. In fact, we don't even like HAL's newest ships -- Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam.
  5. We’re contemplating a fall 2020 transatlantic cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam in an aft-facing cabin when the new itineraries come out and we are interested in hearing from folks that have sailed on a HAL transatlantic cruise in the past year or two. We are in our mid 60s and enjoy lectures, playing trivia, walking laps around the promenade and pretty much having organized fun on sea days. Also, do the cabins sill have DVD players? During slow times and in the evening after the show, as we don’t really like hanging out in the various lounges, we also bring along some dvds to keep us entertained. And finally how is the internet service in the cabins, especially in the aft-facing ones, as my DW needs daily access for work purposes. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.
  6. I was on the Nieuw Amsterdam 4 years ago, and the TVs had been replaced by larger, on-demand format then. I don't know if they've been replaced again in this short time period.
  7. Just curious, we have been on both, and the Zuiderdam has new bigger flat screen TVs as of 2017. Not sure if Nieuw Amsterdam has had the TVs updated? Perhaps someone who has been on her recently can comment? Just off the Koningsdam, good TVs, but limited on demand movies and very limited tv shows and news.
  8. We fly into Budapest to board Emerald Star next Sunday. We sail to Amsterdam. Hoping all river levels are good enough for cruise passage. Will be checking often this week!

  12. Hi, I recently booked this 7-day cruise on the Amsterdam from Montreal to Boston. My wife is an avid "Anne of Green Gables" fan . Unfortunately it does appear that most shore excursions for Tuesday 18th of August do not provide a lot of time at the house and museum. If there are another couple on this cruise interested in sharing a tour with Target Tours Atlantic - "Anne of Green Gables Adventure - private tour" (C$428 total). We are travelling from Australia, you can contact us at my email : altony@optusnet.com.au cheers Tony Evans
  13. I thought he said Amsterdam but I think you are correct and it would be on the Nieuw Amsterdam. Actually, I like playing some of those games so we would have a good time being a "kid" again but I don't think we would qualify going to Club HAL! On our Grand Asia we brought some of our own travel board games.
  14. Does any know if Open Dining is the same as My Time Dining? Also on The Nieuw Statendam what time is Open Dining? Thank you
  15. I didn't hear Amsterdam anywhere, he did say it would be on nieuw Amsterdam February 2020
  16. I've been on Nieuw Amsterdam twice, 8 nights total, and a 7 night cruisetour in Alaska. I'll compare the food quality I experienced on X from 2014 - 2018, not Spring of this year, which was awful. I agree with most of what the OP has said. 1. Food: HAL wins, a slightly superior MDR, better room service menu, freshly served buffet food, and even better junk food. The intimate setting of Blu is missed, unless you book a superior suite. 2. The Ship: X wins on interesting and modern design, at least for my taste in my early 40's Though for scenic places like Alaska, the Crow's Nest comes in quite handy. 3. Cabins: HAL wins, with a mattress that's more comfy, better storage, foot stools, and more movies on demand. Suite perks however are reduced. 4. Loyalty Program: X wins with happy hour drinks at Elite. HAL's happy hour however, allows us light drinkers at lower tiers, an affordable way to drink without a package. 5. Itineraries: HAL wins, with vastly more options. They don't do Galapagos though... Enjoy your cruise ghstudio!
  17. Anyone else sailing on NS for the New Year Eve cruise -Dec 29? I didn't see a roll call for it. Our first time on HAL, have sailed many other cruise lines. Wondering if they will do something special for New Years Eve?
  18. Yes, we were on the Nieuw Amsterdam in February and enjoyed being able to walk anywhere inside the ship without the smell of smoke. We then spent two weeks on the Nieuw Statendam in June and found ourselves avoiding the casino and the surrounding area.
  19. Day #1 - After a leisurely breakfast on the 23rd floor of the Pan Pacific, we rolled our luggage downstairs to the co-located Canada Place cruise ship terminal (the hotel has a dedicated "cruise ship level" elevator.) It was an easy hop, skip and a roll to the porters. From there, it was the actual cruise ship check-in which, with four ships in port, was a busy affair. After check-in, it was a bit of a "zig-zag livestock style" meander to get to shore-side security screening of individuals and carry-on luggage, and then another "hurry up and wait" for pre-clearance border screening, not by Canadian CBSA, but by officers of the United States Customs & Border Protection (CBP). You see, the United States federal government operates border pre-clearance facilities at a number of ports and airports in foreign territory. The process is intended to streamline border procedures, reduce congestion at U.S. ports of entry, and facilitate travel between the pre-clearance location and U.S. ports of entry unequipped to handle international travelers. After the obligatory welcome aboard pic by the ship's photographers (hey, no one is holding a knife to your throat to later purchase these pics!), we took one of Nieuw A's scenic elevators to Deck 7 and to our floating crib. Dropped off the carry-on's and headed for the Lido Marker for a salad and soup lunch. As we were leaving the abode, our luggage was delivered pronto; fast service by Nieuw A's Housekeeping Dept.! The 4:00 PM mandatory passenger emergency safety drill was one of the fastest and most efficient "mustard" drills that we've seen in twenty-seven years of cruising. Everyone showed up, got scanned in by the asst. boat commander and, at least as was the case with our boat, #10, paid attention/quit flapping their lips" as Captain Marco Carsjens and CD Rebecca read their safety and health schpiel via the ship's P/A system. We were dismissed exactly nineteen minutes after arriving, a fact which drew an applause from many of our fellow shipmates! Impressive feat! After unpacking, we did some jelling and vegging until it was time for dinner (we chose a casual one in the Lido and had Rigatoni). From there, it was a beeline for the last portion of the first set (8:30 PM) of the B.B. King's All-Star Band which, we found out, was standing room only, not one available seat in in the house! The band sounded spectacular as usual, with lead female singer Stephanie Bolton standing out. We stuck around for the entire second set (were able to locate two front row seats) and then finished up the night with the two Billboard Onboard pianists/vocalists Ivy and Jonathan. The main entertainment in the show lounge tonite was the movie "Avengers Endgame"starting at 8:30 PM Pic is the reason behind this ship's name prominently displayed opposite the Deck 2 port-side scenic elevators. New York City's nick name "The Big Apple" was first popularized in the 1920s by John J. FitzGerald, a sports writer for the New York Morning Telegraph.
  20. How would the Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam compare to the S class Celebrity ship?
  21. "The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated!" Blizzardboy will be on the Nieuw Statendam, Dec 08, 2019.
  22. I am glad that Neptune Suites and Pinnacle Suites on all ships except the Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam still get to have breakfast in the Pinnacle Grill.
  23. Can’t wait! We’re on Crystal Bach Amsterdam to Basel next June — our first river cruise — and are considering sailing Crystal Ocean for the first time so really looking forward to your posts!
