  1. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING Updated August 23rd, 2019 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. This week’s additions and changes are in BOLD and highlighted in aqua (sea colours). 2. Day #1 - After a leisurely breakfast on the 23rd floor of the Pan Pacific, we rolled our luggage downstairs to the co-located Canada Place cruise ship terminal (the hotel has a dedicated "cruise ship level" elevator.) It was an easy hop, skip and a roll to the porters. From there, it was the actual cruise ship check-in which, with four ships in port, was a busy affair. After check-in, it was a bit of a "zig-zag livestock style" meander to get to shore-side security screening of individuals and carry-on luggage, and then another "hurry up and wait" for pre-clearance border screening, not by Canadian CBSA, but by officers of the United States Customs & Border Protection (CBP). You see, the United States federal government operates border pre-clearance facilities at a number of ports and airports in foreign territory. The process is intended to streamline border procedures, reduce congestion at U.S. ports of entry, and facilitate travel between the pre-clearance location and U.S. ports of entry unequipped to handle international travelers. After the obligatory welcome aboard pic by the ship's photographers (hey, no one is holding a knife to your throat to later purchase these pics!), we took one of Nieuw A's scenic elevators to Deck 7 and to our floating crib. Dropped off the carry-on's and headed for the Lido Marker for a salad and soup lunch. As we were leaving the abode, our luggage was delivered pronto; fast service by Nieuw A's Housekeeping Dept.! The 4:00 PM mandatory passenger emergency safety drill was one of the fastest and most efficient "mustard" drills that we've seen in twenty-seven years of cruising. Everyone showed up, got scanned in by the asst. boat commander and, at least as was the case with our boat, #10, paid attention/quit flapping their lips" as Captain Marco Carsjens and CD Rebecca read their safety and health schpiel via the ship's P/A system. We were dismissed exactly nineteen minutes after arriving, a fact which drew an applause from many of our fellow shipmates! Impressive feat! After unpacking, we did some jelling and vegging until it was time for dinner (we chose a casual one in the Lido and had Rigatoni). From there, it was a beeline for the last portion of the first set (8:30 PM) of the B.B. King's All-Star Band which, we found out, was standing room only, not one available seat in in the house! The band sounded spectacular as usual, with lead female singer Stephanie Bolton standing out. We stuck around for the entire second set (were able to locate two front row seats) and then finished up the night with the two Billboard Onboard pianists/vocalists Ivy and Jonathan. The main entertainment in the show lounge tonite was the movie "Avengers Endgame"starting at 8:30 PM Pic is the reason behind this ship's name prominently displayed opposite the Deck 2 port-side scenic elevators. New York City's nick name "The Big Apple" was first popularized in the 1920s by John J. FitzGerald, a sports writer for the New York Morning Telegraph.
  3. Our last Bon Voyage for the month of August and what better way to finish off the month than to visit the Great Land and the Inside Passage! We hope our CC friends enjoy all of their scenery and have many great sightings on their cruise and, of course, we wish them safe travels, fair winds and smooth seas. Bon Voyage to Nieuw Amsterdam - 7 day Alaskan Inside Passage: crunchii & Zarmengar Bon Voyage crunchii & Zarmengar!!!!!! Have a great cruise and a WONDERFUL time!!!!!
  4. Any suggestions? Will be on a 7 night cruise. It's possible our 1 year old will be with us although I may be able to get babysitting from other family members on one or two nights when we try specialty dining. I've never sailed with HAL before. I watched some videos online and think I want to try the Asian place (Tamarind) and Pinnacle Grill. Not sure about the Italian place as I see it gets mixed reviews. Will we get dirty looks if we bring our kid with us? Any other complimentary food items specific to HAL that I should make sure I try/don't miss out on? The burgers in the videos look really good lol. Since we will have our 1 year old with us we may have to use the buffet a few nights -- do they serve some of the same dishes as the Main Dining Room? Can we get MDR as room service instead if we need to stay in? On Princess I've always been able to get them to deliver MDR food to my stateroom by calling Room Service and just asking (unadvertised benefit YMMV). Not sure how HAL handles it.

  8. Just back from a Cruise through the Fjords of Norway on board the Nieuw Statendam. A few thoughts: Embarkation: A rather long wait- but that might be because we picked a peek time – all in all well handled from HAL Ship: The Nieuw Statendam is just no our ship- to dark – to loud in some places. No deckchairs on the promenade deck- not even in some places. The wrap around pormmenade deck is nice - but the view blockes from the lifeboats. The most irritating part is the Lido – Buffet- Restaurant. The chairs and tables are by the windows- the style of said chairs and tables – well that’s a kind of “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"- for us it was the 70´s gone very wrong! The most disturbing fact of the Lido- Restaurant is that the waiting area in front of the stations doubles as walkway to the aft poo ldeck- so there was always “ traffic”- lot´s of people bumped into each other- the ones carrying their food to the tables and others walking through. The Dutch Café and Explorations – Crow´s Nest are both wonderful and nice places- nicely furnished too- both are self service- which is - in my book anyway- a deal- breaker. Especially in the Dutch Café- which is a very nice place - but way to small- waiter service would be much better- I witnessed some passengers struggling carrying their coffee- tea or whatever to their tables- some spilling their contents, some smashing vase´s in placing the stuff on the table. If you are so lucky to get a table, you had to put some stuff at the table- to mark it – “ in use”- ( so we turned into table- and chair hogs…) otherwise you get your stuff at the counter and are at loss where to put it- if there is no table or seat – happened to us twice- and we ended up at the bar- not a problem- but not very comfortable and not my idea of a Café! Oh just to mention it we are not yet in our dotting years- early 50s! The food in all Restaurants and especially in Rudi´s and the Pinnancle Grill were outstanding good. The service likewise. No complaints here! We had a verandah cabin on Deck 5- 5051- perfect location - perfect and extra large balcony- wonderful- the best bathroom i ever had on boad a ship- with the exception of Queen Mary2´s new single stateroom bathrooms. Would we sail HAL again- well- maybe on boad of one of the older ships- and if they change to table service in the Dutch Cafe and Explorations- for the time beeing it is either Cunard or Celebrity.
  9. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING Updated August 16th, 2019 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. 10. I might have thought that, but booked a cabana on a Nieuw Statendam Christmas Caribbean cruise last year and loved the convenience of stewards, nearby hot tub, lounges in the shade in our cabana or in the sun outside of the cabana, stewards to bring lunch or breakfast to us (and champagne and chocolate covered strawberries and frozen grapes). It was wonderful--and we had a Neptune suite. Already booked a cabana for a Panama Canal cruise April 2021.
  11. Yes, Collectors are two cruises that HAL sometimes considers as one cruise, so they give a price break. However, sometimes, they don't roll two different itineraries together which are two sequential weeks as on the Nieuw Statendam Christmas/New Year's Eve cruises this year. When I made that reservation last year while onboard that ship, the agent commented that it should be a Collectors, but wasn't. Since my son and I wanted both weeks, we have to pay for two separate cruises. We did reserve the same stateroom to avoid the hassle of having to pack up and move, so that's good. We'll receive the "In Transit" card where we'll exit the ship, wait, and go back on at about 10:30 a.m. when the "in transit" passengers are called. We've only taken one other B2B, in Seattle, and the process was seamless in 2014. We stood on the Promenade Deck of the Amsterdam and watched everyone else boarding. At that time, there were only 2 couples who did the B2B. I imagine there will be many more this time, since it's two holiday sailings B2B. As for the stockholder credit. No. You will not get $250 twice. You may get $250. Or they may give you $200 ($100 for each week), which is how they've done ours. Enjoy the thrill of staying onboard for another week while many passengers on your first sailing pack up and leave. Let us know what you decide.
  12. Thank you!! So looking forward to trying Nieuw Amsterdam and Tamarind! Looks like it's going to rain the whole time, but oh well, we're from Seattle, so we're used to it ;)
  13. My d/w and I will be finishing a transatlantic and Norway fiord cruise aboard the Niew Statendam in Early May 2020 and am having a hard time with post cruise hotel in Amsterdam. Will probably stay in the city 3 days or so. Can anyone recommend a hotel central location that doesn’t break the bank?
  14. Just wondering if anyone has stayed in this cabin or one like it. It has the angled balcony which looks like it might be slightly larger than some and the cabin looks a little bit longer. Trying to decide between this and one in the same V category with the obviously larger balcony. Not sure if there's much difference in cabin size, and if not, would rather have the larger balcony on the other one. Thanks!
  15. ... and here, just FYI, is the list of most recent HAL inspections. Note that anything below 86 is a fail, so low 90s are cause for concern. Thus it's no surprise that Amsterdam is being re-inspected given the 90 it received a month ago. 16. Great pictures John I love the NA, as you know. My disappointment is that the last Rehab the Manhattan Dining Room became just :Dining Room. Some one of the Higher ups lacks a sense of History. Nieuw Amsterdam was the nae the Dutch gave to Manhattan Island. That is why, in my opinion Nieuw Statendam makes no sense.
  17. Nieuw Amsterdam's 'Signature wall' can be found on Deck 1 starboard side, just off the Atrium, and opposite the offices of the hotel director, beverage manager, and food & beverage director. Nieuw Amsterdam's godmother, HRH then Princess, now Queen of the Netherlands, and all guests and certain staff on board the three-day inaugural voyage from Venice on 5 July 2010, were asked to sign the wall. The idea came from soldiers onboard then World War II troop carrier Nieuw Amsterdam II carving their names into the ship’s railing to commemorate their transit of the Atlantic Ocean. The picture opposite the wall is of Nieuw A's inaugural, or take-out, senior management staff of Captain Edward van Zaane, Staff Captain Jochem Bakker, Hotel Director Stan Kuppens and Chief Engineer Marcel Kiers. The last pic in the same area is of HAL ad posters of Nieuw Amsterdam ships throughout history
  18. Agree with you on both points, Father. That slowly "doing away with some of the Dutch tradition" on HAL started with the name "Eurodam, and was followed by Koningsdam and "Nieuw" Statendam. The dining rooms as well as the main showrooms used to have individual names on the various ships; Rotterdam dining room; La Fontaine dining room; the Dutch Masters (painters) main show lounge names of van Gogh theater; Vermeer Theater; Rembrandt Theater; Rubens Theater; Frans Hals theater; Mondriaan Theater; then Queens (main) Lounge and Vista show lounge. Those names have disappeared and are now just the "dining room" and the "main stage" on all ships.
  19. I’d go for it !!! We have enjoyed many cabanas! Our first one was on The Nieuw Amsterdam on her inaugural! That was so fun!! Denise😊

  21. Still working on our review of our first trip on HAL, but wanted to share a link to pictures of MDR menus and food here. I know food is subjective, but we really enjoyed most of our meals.
  22. We had a wonderful Northern Isles Cruise on the Nieuw Statendam!!! Pre-cruise - We flew United from Pittsburgh to DC and then DC to Amsterdam. We purchased our airfare through HAL and saved almost 50% to what we found on line. Other than a long layover in DC, which we spent in a United lounge, the flights weren’t bad and we arrived in Amsterdam on Friday morning for a Sunday cruise. We stayed at the Kimpton, which we would highly recommend. It is a short (5 minute) walk from the Centraal station (took the train from the airport) and has nightly free wine happy hours. We walked everywhere from the hotel, with the longest walk being a little over 30 minutes to the Van Gogh Museum. We had a busy few days in Amsterdam- we went on a canal tour (in a drizzling rain) on Amsterdam Boat Adventures - a small canal boat that only holds about 12 people- due to the weather there were only 4 of us on board and it was a great tour. We also visited the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank’s house (with the recommended pre tour presentation). We would highly recommend each. We purchased all of our tickets on line in advance and had no lines. We also had the opportunity to watch some of the pride parade on the canals, which was amazing. It was a very moving experience going from the pride parade to Anne Frank and then back to the pride parade. We had the breakfast plan through the hotel (we booked using points) and also ate at Max Amsterdam- great Rice-table, De Belhamel - loved the fixe price meals for 36-39 euros per person and great canal views, and the Pancake bakery - touristy - but the pancakes were good and portions were huge. Two people can easily share 1 pancake. Transportation to the ship on Sunday was a bit difficult. We were going to walk the 20 minutes to the ship- but the cobblestone sidewalks were not easy with heavy luggage- so we decided to take an Uber. Unfortunately with all the traffic in Amsterdam from the parade and 2 ships in town, the time for the Uber to arrive kept getting delayed - from 5 minutes to 20 minutes to 30 minutes. Luckily a cab showed up at the hotel and we shared it with another couple. He charged us 10 Euros per couple- Not too bad. More to come later.
  23. Day 7 - 08/16/2019; Sailing the Inside Passage back to Vancouver, BC, So, after departing Ketchikan yesterday, Nieuw A. sailed southbound Tongass Narrows to Clarence Strait. The strait was named by George Vancouver in honor of Prince William, later King William IV, Duke of Clarence. Capt. van Dreumel and his navigators then took us to Dixon Entrance, part of the maritime boundary between the U.S. and Canada, from where we reached Hecate Strait, the wide but shallow body of water between Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands) and the mainland of British Columbia. All this maneuvering took place during nighttime hours. Friday morning found us in the open (Canadian) waters of Queen Charlotte Sound. A sound is a large sea or ocean inlet, deeper than a bight and wider than a fjord; or a narrow sea or ocean channel between two bodies of land. Queen Charlotte Sound is positioned between big Vancouver Island in the south and Haida Gwaii in the north. Queen Charlotte Sound leads to Queen Charlotte Strait which is the entrance to the Inside Passage route to Vancouver. Queen Charlotte, btw, was the consort of King George III. Pilotage is mandatory in the Strait so at approx. 11:00 PM, Nieuw A. slowed down near Pine Island where two Canadian/B.C. pilots came onboard and a course was set for Malcolm Island and Alert Bay on Cormorant Island, home of several totem poles. For the next three hours, we had an enjoyable scenic cruise and then sailed into Johnstone Strait. Johnstone Strait is between 1.6 miles and 3.1 miles wide and is a major navigation channel and is the preferred channel for vessels from the Georgia Strait leaving to the north of Vancouver Island bound for Prince Rupert, BC, Alaska, and the North Pacific Ocean, and for southbound vessels from those areas bound for Vancouver, BC. Chugging along in late afternoon/early evening, timed again with slack tide, Nieuw A. would maker passage through Seymour Narrows and from there, it was pretty much a straight shot via the strait of Georgia to Burrard Inlet and Vancouver with a 0630 passage under Lions Gate and a 0700 arrival at Canada Place’ Berth West. The longshoremen in Vancouver do not start work before 0700 for beauty sleep reasons! So, this being our last day onboard, a sea day, there were activities planned, one of which was the On Deck for the Cure walk, a non-competitive five kilometer walk around the ship’s Promenade Deck/Deck 3. We also lost that hour we gained last Sunday night to bring us back on Pacific Standard Time. At 10:00 AM, Captain Bas van Dreumel took a seat on the Main Stage, along with CTD Rebekah. The captain spent the next 35-40 minutes talking about his training in the “Koninklijke Marine” (Royal Netherlands Navy) and with Holland America Line, starting as an officer cadet in 1995 on Maasdam, to his promotion to Captain in 2012 as well as answering questions from his audience. I’ve seen this “Ask the Captain” virtual behind the scene tour and Q&A on several ships now and it seems to be a popular event. We had a 12;30 lunch in the Pinnacle, which was good, the PG Burger still takes the price as far as I’m concerned. Maria had the chicken salad. We have one more breakfast there on disembarkation day. The entertainment tonight was a variety show consisting of illusionist Leon Etienne and comedian Kristen Key. Left to do for us was the always depressing chore of packing luggage and have them out in the corridor outside the cabin by Midnight. We are “Pink one” in the morning (bus transportation to YVR – Vancouver Int’l Airport) with an anticipated disembarkation around 0900 hrs. Pic is a look at scenic cruising in British Columbia's beautiful Discovery Passage
  24. Here is the latest update of the Dry Dock, Charter and Groups file. Please consider this a 'work in progress' which will evolve from month to month. There is some uncertainty as to Zaandam/Amsterdam getting Billboard on Board and whether it will be a full dry dock (with additional maintenance being done) or a wet dock, also, Westerdam is not showing a sailing between 4th January 2020 and 16th January 2020, so she may also be dry docking or maybe a charter. The file consists of information gathered from the internet or information kindly posted on these threads by other cruisers and should not be considered a complete indicator of group activity. If you have information about groups charters or dry docks then please post here and I will update in the next file. 25. I was taken aback when I read the report. But then I checked the most recent report on a HAL ship with a score of 100, (the Nieuw Amsterdam in June) and found there were nearly as many items listed on the ‘perfect score of 100’ report, as there were on the July Amsterdam report, which made me realize it wasn’t nearly as alarming as first appeared.
