  1. Just back from the last Caribbean cruise of the season on the Nieuw Statendam! We are a family of four with an adult child in his 20s and a 10 year old so my review is based more on those demographics. We have not cruised in 11 years and a lot has changed such as the way they do muster drills, the availability of internet onboard, and the navigator app to name a few. The Ship: Beautiful and elegant, with lots of spaces to hide out in and just relax. I particularly enjoyed all the music related artwork all over the ship. We stayed in a verandah on Deck 5. It was tight for 4 people, but still doable. I loved all the drawers and there was space for all of us once we unpacked. My favorite spots onboard were the Crow’s Nest and my in room balcony. Entertainment & Activities: I loved having all of the various music venues onboard. There is something for everyone. We enjoyed the Lincoln Center classical pianist and Latina Musica, the rock room band, and BB King band. The mentalist was interesting. Movies by the pool were OK. They would have been better but the volume is just not loud enough to really hear properly. Club HAL was enjoyable and my son went a few times for an hour or so. Mixology class was entertaining for my son. Trivia was fun but I wish they had prizes for the winners, even just some HAL pens/pencils/notepads etc. Food: The Main Dining Room: food choices were great and I particularly enjoyed the beef stroganoff and roasted chicken. Service was a tad bit slow for us (a little over 1.5 hours). We had a fixed late seating (8pm) which was fine because we are coming from the West Coast and still not starved by then. Only negative was it seemed very noisy every time we ate there. Pinnacle Grill: excellent dinner here and a much more relaxing atmosphere. While not the best filet I have had it was very good. Tamarind: was much better than we expected it to be! I liked how the dishes felt light because often Asian food can feel heavy. All of our dishes were tasty and good portion size (not too big). De Librije: My son had the pop up in the Pinnacle. He enjoyed it immensely with the included 2oz wine pours. Daily Tea Service in MDR: Loved it. Service was white glove and delivered to the table (not buffet style). Sandwiches were tasty and just the right amount for an afternoon pick me up. Plus the dining room is quite pretty during the day. Dive In: Excellent burger and chicken sandwiches! NY Deli: Good for breakfast bagel sandwiches. Salads were great. Pizzas were just OK. Dutch Café: Excellent lattes! Never got the hot food because they didn’t serve it when we went before 11am. Lido: Breakfast was good with so many options! The crepe and omelette stations were always busy with a long wait. Dinner was OK but the times were so limited! I felt like every time we wanted to go they are almost closing or had just closed. Casino: Seemed a bit small and the table games were really squished together. No Texas Hold ‘Em Table (except the heads up game) or poker tournaments which was a bummer for my husband. I did not notice the smoke in the public areas and there was a day or two where the casino was nonsmoking. Only one night my husband said the smoke was strong. Ports: Grand Turk visited Governor’s Beach – amazing and quiet! Worth the $4 per person taxi ride. St Thomas Magen’s Beach was a bit more crowded but still very nice with chairs, food and beverage service for purchase. We purchased through HAL and the guide who drove us was great and stopped a few times for pictures etc. Puerto Rico we visited the Fort by taxi and later my husband and son went on the bioluminescent kayak tour. They really enjoyed it. Unfortunately Half Moon Cay was canceled due to weather. We were so bummed!!! Negatives for me (far and few): There needs to be more options besides in room dining later at night. Some nights the lido closed at 8pm leaving you waiting til their late night snack hour. The room service and lido coffee is terrible! But I did love my lattes at the Dutch Café. Laundry kept charging us even though we purchased unlimited. Spoke to guest services twice and ended up leaving the ship with it still on my bill. The weekly spa pass I bought was not worth it to me. I only went once and found it to be loud and not very relaxing. Next time I will save my money on that or maybe do a day pass instead. Overall we had an amazing time and are now hooked on cruising again. We had waited years to cruise because our 10 year old is autistic and we were not sure if he would do well onboard. Well apparently he is a natural born cruiser because he loved it and says the next trip he wants to do 10 days! I would sail on this ship again because I still did not get to try everything onboard.
  2. As many of you know I recently completed a one week voyage on the NIEUW STATENDAM and I thought you would want a few observations.. I will be brief. I hate to say it but this is the new mid size. That was made clear to me when we were in Cozumel and docked next to The Harmony of the Seas. The Nieuw Statendam looked like a tug boat next to this monster ship. That being said, I still prefer the Signature Class Ships. My friar is they will get bigger and bigger.in the future. One thing I do not like is the promenade walk around deck. It is too narrow . It was good that they moved the Lincoln Center performers to the Queens lounge. However since they now share the space with the BB Kings Blues Venue, the classical music does not go that late. &:30 they are furnished. This ship and the Koningsdam cannot go through the New Locks in the Panama Canal. It has to do with the fact that lifeboats are out way to far. I understand that the next ship they will be relocated closer to the ship and hopefully more like they are on the other classes of ships. Maybe we will even get a decent size Promenade Deck in the next one. I had a nice room on the Navigation Deck (8059) midway between the Forward and Mid ship elevators. The problem was it was right below the Lido pull area and I could heart them dragging tables and chars late at night as I was trying to go to sleep. I liked this ship better that the Koningsdam but I still favor the Vista and Signature Class ships. I miss those Sea View Elevators at the mid ship. I also notice that there are not as many offerings at Dinner as HAL used to offer. For instance, we used to get three soups offered each evening: A broth soup, a cream soup and a cold soup. Not there is one but I think you can still get French Onion. It also seemed that there are fewer options on the minu but you can purchase a President Cut Steak for another &%.00. Baked Alaska is gone from the minuet on the last night of the cruise. The have a Chocolate offering on the last Gala night but with Diabetes, I took a rain check. These are my observations. I will be Chaplain on b2b Cruises on the Nieuw Amsterdam in June. It will be nice to get back on a Signature Ship. If you to the time to read these thoughts and observations, thanks for reading them . They are subjective. They were written in that spirit.
  3. We're looking to book Nieuw Statendam for a Caribbean cruise in March 2020. The best inside cabin we can get is an aft cabin on the 4th (Bethoven) deck (4192). Is there much vibration or engine noise in this area? The cabin is above the dining room, but away from the galley. Have always booked mid-ship so no experience with aft cabins. Any comments would be appreciated.
  4. We have a spring break cruise in 2020 book for the Nieuw Statendam booked, and as excited as I am, curious to hear about how many kids and any reports from Club HAL - so far, not a lot of family reviews. We originally had a Disney 4 day booked, but at almost 2k less and 3 more days, this was a easy choice, buuut, I'd feel better knowing that our 8 and 13 year old are going to have fun too:)
  5. Anyone sailing on the Nieuw Statendam November 17, 2019. My wife and I will be sailing with my Daughter and Son in Law. Would like to connect with any others folks that will be traveling on the Nieuw Statendam
  6. Hoping someone can assist here... Any scotch drinkers been on the Nieuw Amsterdam recently and know of what Single Malts they might have? I really do prefer single malts over blends, so hoping someone might have an idea for me! Thanks! Warren
  7. We will be on the New Year's sailing on the NA in a signature suite. My husband uses a CPAP so I'm wondering if there are any outlets next to the bed or whether I need to request an extension cord. Thanks
  8. looking at booking oceanview stateroom on Deck 1 in area of #1116 ...soon!...on the NS and would appreciate any comments as to location pros & cons? preferably from those that have been on her.? thanks all!
  9. Our very first cruise was to Alaska in 2014 on the Westerdam. This was our 3rd trip to Alaska and we went back to Holland. It was amazing! I think the passengers can make the cruise fun and we had some really great fellow cruisers. Ages from 20s - 70s but all young at heart and ready for fun. Boarding: was easy. got to the port by 11AM and on board by noon. Room: 7079 Signature Suite. Perfect size and balcony had lots of room with two loungers and table. It was pretty warm the entire trip so we used the balcony a lot. Entertainment: BB King was fantastic. This group had been together for the last 5 months and this was their last week and then a new group was coming. They really got the crowd going and dancing. They do three sessions each night 8:30/ 9:30 and 10:30 with a 15 minute break in between. We got their early for the first show to get a seat and never left. The string quartet was fabulous as well. They were from Russia and really sounded like a recording. Just beautiful We went to one variety show and a dancer was injured due to the rocking of the ship. They ended up cancelling the second show. Two nights were pretty rocky during the week. Spa: I got the salt water spa package with the heated spa lounger. It is $136 on line, but I waited too long and couldn't book before I left. When I went to sign up, they wanted to charge me $215, then after i protested $169 but finally got them to $136. I felt the workers at the spa were a bit snooty and not very helpful. There is also no water available to drink. So be sure to bring your own. Really loved the salt water after a day of touring. Excursions: We did the Tracy Inlet cruise and it was amazing. Rained most of the time, but the views were spectacular. We saw a "herd"? of sea lions and their babies splashing in the water. Must have been about 50 of them. a lot of harbor seals and one whale. Afterwards we we took the tram up Mt. Roberts and had dinner. Food was OK. Views were spectacular. The train/bus tour in Skagway. I messed up and had the bus portion first and then the train coming back. I would do the RT train if I had to do it over. The train has nicer views IMO and much more comfortable than the bus. There is also supposed to be a club car with big plush chairs. I'd look into that option. Ketchikan: We did the Ketchikan Taxi cab tour with Tim White. Went to herring cove which is beautiful and to Potach park to see the Totems. Also went to the Rotary park. Saw lots of eagles. Didn't see any bears this time. Then went to a Jazz club in town. Good times Food: We ate in the main dining room the first night. Then Rudy's on Thursday night. This is the one night special chef deal. It was incredible! The remainder we ate in the buffet. Had the pizza and brought to our balcony. Also had the burger at the Dive In. They were very good as were the french fries. Casino: My husband played the slots. (his addiction) and won $910.00. So I'd say the slots are fairly loose. disembarking: We had an early flight so we did the self walk off. It was easy. Lines were long at customs as there were 4 ships in port. But moved fairly quickly. LOVED this cruise Dawn

  11. Cruising next month on our 5th HAL cruise, 14 days B2B Caribbean. Question for those who have already been on the new ship since christening last month. What is the status of the electrical outlets beside the bed? Are there USB ports bedside for phone/tablet charging? I have a new CPAP that will require a plug in reasonable proximity to the bed. Do I need to bring an extension cord or are there close outlets that will suffice? Any input will be much appreciated. Thanks.

  13. I purchased the premium internet for the week on the ship. Internet was down all day while in port in Amber Cove. In St Thomas currently and it is down again. Just curious if anyone has had similar experiences. Any pro ration of the weekly charge , or is it just part of the cruise contract.
  14. can anyone tell me if there is any self-serve laundry facilities (washers, dryers) on the Statendam? also, are irons readily available? thanks.
  15. Fellow cruisers, I booked a cruise on the Nieuw Statendam (NS) in December. My new girlfriend and I are in our early 50s. This is her first cruise, my sixth. When I booked the trip, I reasoned the NS is a new ship and assumed it must be an improvement over other Holland America ships. I like Holland America for being classy but not arrogant, offering a calmer, quieter experience. My last cruise on the somewhat smaller Nieuw Amsterdam (NA) was very good. The atmosphere on the NA was subdued and I felt the ship needed a slight "party buzz" (just a little, nothing Carnival like) and also felt what the ship offered in entertainment was just enough. The NA's elegance and other elements of the cruise made up for that slight gap in entertainment. Overall, I love the NA and would cruise again in an instant! However, since I made the booking on the NS, I read reviews that were not quite as praising of the ship. In particular, passengers said entertainment was lacking, and some said it was less than that on the NA. The following four criticisms from experienced cruisers caught my eye: - One said Holland America did away with Broadway-like shows, and whatever they replaced them with was sub-par: not enough and not quite entertaining. - Another wrote there were not enough music venues. The two main venues -- the BB King and the Rolling Stones -- were crowded since many passengers would tend to congregate there, thus lessening the experience. - A third complained about the music played in the back of the ship, or anywhere else for that matter, as not being lively. - A fourth complained the NS felt too "plain" (I guess he meant lacking in elegance) and worse, there was practically nothing to do on ship. This is a long way of saying I am concerned. I want to give the NS a fair chance, but must admit the reviews have made me nervous. I suppose I can enjoy a beautiful ship even if there is nothing to do on it, but I am coming with a new girlfriend and hope for at least some "buzz." Can anyone please share their experiences with respect to entertainment on the NS? Thanks in advance.
  16. Nieuw Statendam will be at pier 26 from 0530-1700. She is headed out on a 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise. Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos (02 Apr 0800-1500); San Juan, Puerto Rico (03 Apr 1300-2300); St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (04 Apr 0800-1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (06 Apr 0800-1500); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (07 Apr a0700) Zuiderdam will be at pier 21 from 0545-1700. She is doing a 10-night Panama Canal Seafarer cruise. Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (01 Apr 0800-1500); Oranjestad, Aruba (03 Apr 1300-2300); Willemstad, Curacao (04 Apr 0800-1600); Panama Canal (Cruising Canal) (06 Apr 0500-0500); Colon, Panama (06 Apr 1500-2000); Puerto Limon, Costa Rica (07 Apr 0630-1600); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (10 Apr a0700) Also in port are Regal Princess at pier 2 from 0500-1600, and Celebrity Edge (I haven't missed seeing her😒) at pier 25 from 0600-1600. She Is the only ship in port. I cannot get the San Diego webcam anymore. When you click on the link (sundiegolive.com) it sends you to a slightly altered address (http://ww1.sundiegolive.com/) which appears to have no relation to San Diego and has strange ads. Has this been discussed previously? Here is another webcam I found but not sure if it covers the area we are interested in but it does have a nice clear picture and does not jump from place to place like the other one - https://www.skylinewebcams.com/en/webcam/united-states/california/san-diego/san-diego.html For the Addicts: Rotterdam in Key West from 1100-1800 on April 1 (https://www.keywestharborwebcam.com/) Volendam will be in San Diego departing at 1700 on April 3 Zuiderdam will be in Aruba from 1300-2300 on April 3 (https://www.portarubawebcam.com/) Next up: As the Port Everglades season winds down, we will not have another sail-away until Saturday, April 6.
  17. So confused on Holland America's inside cabin differences. Cannot find anywhere what the actually cabin size is, most sites say so and so sq ft up to 225 sq ft for an inside. I did read there are certain inside cabins that have a convertible sofa bed available. Does anyone know which ones or a good site to figure out the size of the rooms?
  18. We are in a Neptune in a few weeks on the Nieuw Amsterdam and I was wondering what to expect with getting Club Orange added on. It seems that being Neptunes we get most of the items anyway (we are familiar with the Neptune perks), but was wondering if we should be aware of anything extra? Also, we have Early Fixed dining, so will we be assigned a Club Orange area table or just the normal ones? Thanks
  19. I realize this is a long shot because it is about specific cabins on Nieuw Statendam, but I'm hoping someone may have an answer for me. On the deck plans on the HAL website, on deck 7 there is no line separating the balconies for cabins 7144 & 7146. I initially thought that it could simply be a mistake on the graphic, but then I noticed that the line is also missing on deck 8 for cabins 8146 & 8148, which are directly above the other two. This made me wonder if there is something at that spot on the ship that makes it impossible to separate the balconies. This seems like a small thing, but I am going to be in 7144 in June and I really enjoy a private balcony. If anyone has been in or is currently in one of these four room, could you please let me know what the balconies are like? Thanks very much.
  20. We just returned from a wonderful 7 day Eastern Caribbean cruise on the Nieuw Statendam. This was our 12th HAL cruise but first on the Pinnacle class.. We had a VB booked, and 4 days before, got an email for an upsell to a Vista Suite for 399 pp. We passed on that. Two days before, we got an upsell offer to a Signature Suite for 499 pp. We jumped on that one, and we were so happy we did, because this suite was A-MAZING! Great central location, beautiful, functional layout and the bathroom was wonderful. I literally jumped up and down after examining the suite saying..."I love this room!" I continued to say it all week long. I decided I liked it even more than Neptune Suites. The shower was luxurious. The lighting in the room and bathroom was gorgeous, and in fact the lighting throughout the ship was equally as nice. Our stewards Kadek and Komang were unobtrusive and proficient. Laundry service was fast and professional. We were going to upgrade to the Elite Beverage Package once on-board, but decided to stay with the Signature Package since we splurged on the suite. They removed some selections from a year ago, so there were only a few choices. We managed with what they offered and it was adequate. At least you could still get nice cocktails with the Signature Package, my favorite was the Tanqueray 0010 Martini. There are so many options for dining and we tried nearly all of them. The best by far was the Tamarind. We were so impressed, we went back three times. Barbara and Nila were very gracious and warm, and so attentive. We had lamb, tenderloin, duck, chicken curry, shrimp and lobster dishes and all were superb. The manager was also a very gracious man and he was out on the floor at all times, assisting servers as needed as well as talking to customers. All of this was in stark contrast to our most disappointing meal, in the Pinnacle. I am not sure we will ever make a late reservation (8:00) again. They seemed completely backed up. The service was rushed and we waited a great deal. No bread was served until the dinner arrived, even though she promised it to us twice. The salad I had was not good, the bacon didn't taste real. The baked potato was completely dried out. The beets seemed over done. The filet mignon however, was perfect. My husband got the "hashed potatoes with blue cheese aioli", but they looked and tasted like they came out of a frozen food bag. But the service was just not there at all, nothing compared to meals in the past. Was it just because we arrived late? We canceled a second reservation and went to the Tamarind instead. We did however return for lunch, and that was so much better. The Lido, if you can navigate the crowds, is incredible. So many choices and all done well. We ate in the Canaletto twice and you can't beat the view and the quieter atmosphere. The servings are smaller this year and that is just fine with me, as I often found it to be too much food served in the past. The MDR is beautiful and the lighting is so pretty, we enjoyed one breakfast, one lunch and one dinner here. The chairs are very comfortable and the place settings so elegant. We bought a spa pass and I was disappointed with a few things, mostly in the design. The hydro-pool was splashy, the tile loungers were in the same space as all the other saunas, steam rooms and showers so it was loud. Not relaxing at all. One of my best memories is from the Westerdam and my first time on those loungers. Ambient music, the sound of water hitting rocks, the view out to sea. On this ship, there is a view, but you can't hear the music because there is way too much going on right behind you. And the doors slamming, yikes. If we go on another Pinnacle class ship, we won't purchase the pass. The ports were great and the weather perfect. We spent so much time in the water. Grand Turk, we walked to Governor's Beach and spent a quiet morning enjoying the turquoise waters, how beautiful! St. Thomas,we took a catamaran tour to St. John to snorkel off Honeymoon beach. Great snorkeling here, saw lots of fun things including sea turtles. Half Moon Cay is our favorite stop and it was a great day and so hard to leave. I prefer not sharing the island with another ship as it made things congested, especially when leaving, it felt we were in Disney with the queues to get on the tenders. Our favorite spot at night was at BB King. This band was great! Each and every musician was so very talented. The dance floor and seating and stage are a great design on this ship, much improved over the older ships. The Rolling Stone Rock Room did not play rock and roll, at least not for the somewhat limited time we saw them. The Eagles and Neil Diamond are not rock. The band was talented, but their song selections were tame. The world stage is beautiful but yes it is small for such a big ship. I really liked the comedian Ken Boyd, he was very funny, mostly doing improv. This cruise had some hits and misses but we had a great time and feel so very grateful to be able to cruise (thus far) once a year. I would sail on the Pinnacle class again and would feel better prepared to enjoy it even more. I am happy to answer any questions!
  21. Can anyone help out with a pictures or describtion of this particular cabin- as far as I know it is a different layout then other balcony cabins. Thanks so much!
  22. I think the answer is no but I want to make sure. Looking to book a spa cabin but thinking it is not worth the extra price if it does not include spa pass. Other spa cabins on other lines we have booked do include spa pass but I am having a hard time figuring it out on Holland.
  23. Are the beds on this ship comfortable? I know this is subjective but I really dislike rock hard beds and since we will be spending 21 nights on her in April I would like to get a heads up on this. Any info would be appreciated. As a guide I think Celebrity’ s beds are perfect.
  24. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at pier 26 (starboard to) from 0530-1700. She is doing the 7-day Malt Shop Memories cruise. Philipsburg, St. Maarten (05 Nov 0800-2359); St Johns, Antigua (06 Nov 0800-1700); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (09 Nov a0700) Other ships in port are Carnival Sunrise at pier 4 (0630-1600), Celebrity Equinox at pier 25 (0600-1530), Coral Princess at pier 2 (0515-1600), and Majesty OTS at pier 9 (0545-1600). The PTZtv webcams can be found at https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/ and https://www.ftlauderdalewebcam.com/. Also, Zuiderdam will be in Aruba from 1300-2300. https://www.portarubawebcam.com/ For the Addicts: Nieuw Amsterdam will be in St. Maarten on November 5 from 0800-2359. https://www.portstmaartenwebcam.com/ Next up: Veendam on November 6.
