  1. HAL has just announced on Facebook that Oprah is to be the Godmother of the Nieuw Statendam.
  2. Are the cabins exactly the same as on the Konsingdam? what is the purpose of calling a Vista Suite a Suite?
  3. So, I guess the Holland America Facebook page is “blowing up” with negative comments about this latest announcement making Oprah the “Godmother” of the Nieuw Statendam. What is Holland America trying to accomplish with these types of labels? I have nothing against Oprah, but is it really necessary to name a “godmother” of a new ship? Who is HAL trying to appeal to anymore? Sent from my iPad using Forums
  4. I assume that they dim the lights for the movies. Has anyone looked up to see the stars? Can you see stars? I tried to stargaze on other cruises, but there was always to many lights on the ship...
  5. Hoping for some help with a stateroom question. We are booked and within the final payment of our upcoming cruise in a VA category stateroom on the 6th deck and there will be 2 adults and our twin boys in the room. I noticed that there is a stateroom available, on deck 4, stateroom 4156 with a oversized balcony (their is a crew stair well next to the room, and that’s why the balcony is extra long) Is it worth it to contact our travel agent to move rooms, is it even worth it and would we lose our OBC?
  6. What category are they? Is there a fixed pricing formula?
  7. We are going on a mexican cruise druring spring break, I see lots of posts about other ships. We were on the Veendam last Easter. What kind of differences will we experience? We have 2 teens coming too.
  8. I told myself I wasn’t going to ask people about the Nieuw Amsterdam or this itinerary. I was just on the Eurodam last year, and I’ve been to all the ports. I almost made it. The roll call was my first stop, but I see posts about 2017? So here I am. Who are your favorite staff members on this ship? Cool things you’ve done on board that I might miss without your insider information? And you can use this thread to drop off any questions I can try to answer for you while I’m onboard. I’m no POA, but I do have a good team and some time for research.
  9. My son and his family went on a 7 day cruise to some western Caribbean islands and Mexico 17-24 Nov and told me there were NO evening shows in the main theater other than port lectures. We heard HAL no longer has production shows, but have they stopped booking guest entertainers as well on the shorter 7 day cruises on the Nieuw Amsterdam as well? He said they had port lectures in the evening and had one game show, Majority Rules, on the last sea day. We know from recently cruising on the Amsterdam and Koningsdam, they sometimes advertise the main show times on the back page of the Navigator (?) rather than in the chronological daily event postings on pages 2-3. In fact when we were on the Amsterdam a year ago, a guy told us he missed the first 5 evening shows because he didn't notice them listed on the back page. Could my son have missed the evening shows in the main theater because of similar oversight or has HAL just stopped booking acts on the 7 day Caribbean cruises on the Nieuw Amsterdam?

  11. THE SUITE (PHOTOS ATTACHED) Our cabin (7080) was a little larger than most Signature Suites since it's located right were the ship juts back out from the center. The extra space extends the cabin quite a bit and might have been better suited for additional square footage on the balcony, but it's also a great spot to store empty luggage. Bed was comfortable and AC/heat both worked well. Hardly heard any hallway noise in the evenings, nor anyone in the cabins next door or above. Cabin was always attended to quickly in the mornings and in the evenings for turn-down service. THE FOOD Pinnacle Grill and Tamarind are amazing, both in quality of food and service. Main dining room and buffet also had great service, but the food was hit or miss (which is to be expected for mass production). Also to be expected: the buffet area can be a madhouse at times and finding a table for larger groups can be a challenge. The main dining room was just the opposite: most table around ours were empty on the two nights we ate there. ENTERTAINMENT Billboard Onboard was great fun, especially the request shows later in the evening. It was great to see everyone sing along and have a great time with the two performers. Only caught the illusionist on the Mainstage and was surprised at how great his show was. Didn't spend time at BB King, America's Test Kitchen, or Lincoln Center Stage, but did walk by during performances and all appeared to have standing-room only (Lincoln Center Stage sounded incredible, so sorry to have missed that performance). GREENHOUSE SPA Like any cruise, spa treatments on board aren't cheap, even when they offer special discounts. What's worse is the up-sell on products after every spa appointment. However, we did make great use of the "discounted" spa pass that allowed daily access into hydro-pool, saunas, and ceramic-heated loungers (for $149 per cabin with two passengers). What else would you like to know? Happy to answer questions if you've got 'em.
  12. Seasoned cruisers new to HAL. Looking to book a 7 night on Nieuw Amsterdam. Have 2 questions for anyone who has recently sailed on her. I already tried searching the boards but didn’t come up with answers specific to this ship. 1- how fast is the WIFI onboard and what was the cost for unlimited access? 2- are there any cabanas overlooking a pool area? Specifically want to keep an eye on my teens, but don’t need to be right there with them the whole time. Thank you you in advance for any insights!

  14. i just passed by the shipyard near Venice and saw the Nieuw Statendam where it is being built. Not very clear as I was passing by on the train
  15. We're booked on a 7 day Vancouver - Alaska roundtrip on the Nieuw Amsterdam in a VD class balcony room aft deck 7. Looking at the deck plans it's hard to figure out how large the balcony is - standard 6ft?
  16. I know I have seen mentions and photos of these balances here, but can not find them in a search. Do people find the larger balcony makes up for the solid railing?
  17. Does anyone know anything about this? I saw it listed on the deck plans. Was wondering if it has an upcharge?
  18. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at Pier 21 (port to - rather unusual) where our view will not be blocked by Edge from 0615-1600. Most HAL ships have been leaving at 1700 so we will have to watch if this gets changed. She will be going on a 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise. Sunday, December 9 Fort Lauderdale, FL Monday, December 10 At Sea Tuesday, December 11 Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos Islands Wednesday, December 12 San Juan, Puerto Rico Thursday, December 13 St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands Friday, December 14 At Sea Saturday, December 15 Half Moon Cay, Bahamas Sunday, December 16 Fort Lauderdale, FL Also in port are Celebrity Silhouette from 0430-1600 (pier 29), Regal Princess from 0500-1600 (pier 2), Harmony of the Seas from 0515-1630 (pier 18), Celebrity Edge from 0530-1600 (pier 25), and Caribbean Princess from 0545-1600 (pier 4). With five ships set to sail at 1600 this might be a long sail-away. The PTZtv webcams can be found at https://www.ftlauderdalewebcam.com/ and https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/ . Eurodam will be in San Diego, departing on a 7-day Mexican Riviera cruise. http://sundiegolive.com/ Next up: Koningsdam and Veendam on Monday, 10 December.
  19. Hello! I will be part of a large group (between 30 and 40 people) sailing on the Nieuw Statendam next year. I have a few questions, as far as dining in the MDR: For a European itinerary and port-intensive cruise, is it best to sign up for the main (late) dining time? Does the late dining time make it nearly impossible to catch the shows in the main showroom? Assuming all of our reservations are properly linked, how does HAL usually handle such large groups in the dining room? I know we will be split up among several tables, but are the tables usually located in the same area? For the Koningsdam/Nieuw Statendam, do you prefer the upper or lower level in the MDR, and why? We will have at least one vegan in our group. Does HAL offer good vegan options in the MDR? Thanks so much.
  20. We're considering a cruise in September 2019 on Statendam. I notice on the deck plans that there is a large grayed out and unlabeled area on deck 3 port side extending from near the stern forward to almost the area under the atrium on deck 4. I'm concerned this may be the galley or perhaps some other noisy area that might be heard in the staterooms above it on deck 4. I would appreciate any information that anyone can give concerning this. Thanks, Luxurysailer
  21. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at Pier 21 (Starboard to) from 0545-1700. She is doing a 7-day Western Caribbean itinerary. She will be at Pier 26 (port to) from 0530-1300 (although ships leaving for dry dock seldom leave on time). It is another busy day in Port Everglades with five ships joining the HAL ones. Adventure OTS will be at pier 29 from 0430-1730, Carnival Conquest at pier 4 from 0615-1600, Crystal Symphony at pier 19 (nice view for Roy) from 0515-1800, Harmony OTS at pier 18 from 0445-1630, and Regal Princess at pier 2 from 0500-1600. 25. We are sailing soon on the Nieuw Amsterdam. Two members of our group take a refrigerated medication at bedtime. I have had a few emails with HAL general customer service and Access & Compliance and have been told that the refrigerators in cabins are not meant for medication. However, we are welcome to keep our medications in the medical center. The issue is that these medications need to be taken at bedtime and the medical center is not open in the later evening. I am told that if we need to access our medication at a time when the clinic is not open, there will be a $35.00 fee to have the nurse open the medical center. Does anyone else have experience with this? We are trying to think of ways to possibly save the $245 total fee that this would cost over seven days. Maybe we can keep a cooler in our cabin and keep the medication cold with ice packs that we keep frozen in the medical center freezer? And have two sets of ice packs to rotate as needed? Any other ideas? Thank you!
