  1. I have gorgeous full length formal dresses that hang in the closet and are rarely worn. I'd like to dress up for gala night, however formal wear is a pain to pack. I could pack lighter if all that is needed is smart dinner attire. This is our first time cruising with Holland America. We're leaving out of Barcelona and doing northern Europe. Can anyone answer, "How dressy is dressy?", on the Holland America New Statendam?
  2. The ms Nieuw Amsterdam will be at pier 26 from 5:45 am to 5:00 pm. She is leaving on a 7 day Southern Caribbean. Also in port is Celebrity Reflection at pier 19 (4:30 am - 4:30 pm) Regal Princess at pier 2 (4:45 am – 4:00 pm), Harmony of the Seas at pier 18 (5:15 am to 4:30 pm), and Celebrity Beyond at pier 25 (6:15 am-3:30 pm). The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/ Next up: Eurodam and Rotterdam on February 15, 2023 Leanne
  3. Looking at first HAL cruise, Canada New England this fall. Zaandam and Nieuw Amsterdam are the options. Port intensive cruise so thinking of Ocean View. Any suggestions as to which ship? Zaandam looks attractive for smaller ship experience, but Statendam looks to have more choice for entertainment and restaurants.
  4. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at pier 26 (starboard to) from 5:30 am to 4 pm. She will be going on a 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise. 5. Hello All, Big Cruise Critic fan here so I thought I would share my trip highlights hoping your experience can be as fabulous as ours! We are experienced cruisers with 12-14 cruises in our lifetime. We booked the Dec 11 Nieuw Amsterdam cruise in October when we finally decided to do a cruise and found a great rate on this one. Booked this cruise for a few reasons: 1 – Date – we had to leave on Dec 11 and wanted one week. 2 – Cost – Better rates than Celebrity which we also considered. HAL and Celebrity are our favorite lines. 3 – Itinerary – We last visited Aruba and Curacao on our honeymoon 15 years ago. We wanted a second visit here. We booked the cheapest guarantee balcony planning to then book Club Orange and choose our favorite room for a lower price than booking this room directly. If you have a favorite room, definitely use this option to get CO benefits for what is essentially no money. It was kind of a hassle with some back and forth between HAL and the travel agent, but it eventually got worked out. 12 days out I was surfing Cruise Critic and saw others were considering upgrades. I didn’t get any offers, but had the upgrade phone number in my notes. I called, got an offer for $550 per person to upgrade to a Neptune Suite. I thought this would be a nice surprise for my wife, so I booked it. By they way, they refunded my Club Orange upgrade fee, so the net additional was just $375 per person. We flew in the morning of the cruise. Frowned upon I know, but I had a full work day the prior day and we could not leave until Sunday morning. Flight left early, landed early, and we had an incredibly fast trip to the terminal via taxi. We arrived around 9:40 and hung around until they opened the doors around 10:00. We were among the first in, first through, and the second couple in the VIP room waiting to board. Boarding was promptly at 11:00 AM and we headed to the Lido to enjoy that experience uncrowded. After quality Asian dishes we headed to our room. Wife didn’t figure out what was going on until we were actually in our room when she realized the suite upgrade. She was ecstatic and we took in the room for a spell. We then headed to the Neptune lounge where the concierge took care of all our needs: gift card credits, restaurant reservations, and questions answered. The concierges were both wonderful. The suite perks were plentiful, such as: - Free laundry, we used this 3 times - Lounge access, nice to get a snack any time of day - Concierge, always available to answer questions and solve problems - Extra entrée choice in dining room, we got this twice - Pinnacle Grill breakfast – still a much better experience than the dining room even with the service issues - Disembarkation day room service breakfast – very nice perk especially when you need an early exit - Of course, the larger room and double wide balcony. Also nicer cushioned chairs on balcony. - Free lattes and cappicinos - wife loved these, probably saved us $100 I don’t remember the rest of day 1, but I’m sure it was enjoyable. Our cruises tend to be basic. We often don’t have many more expenses than the cruise fare and some drinks. We’ve had a good year so we splurged on this one with internet access (which we shared), the suite upgrade, and the Thermal Spa, the first time we ever got that. We also had a Tamarind visit and two Pinnacle Grill lunches where we usually just get one. We’re we glad we got all these? Absolutely. Will we do these every time? Probably not. That said, we enjoyed the extra space and lounge. I enjoyed the thermal spa more than I expected. We also enjoyed the internet surfing on board. The speed was slower, but if your expectations for internet speed are low, you won’t be disappointed. The only issue we ever had was trying to check in to the flight on the last day. I couldn’t do this until I went into the hall and stood under the signal repeater. This gave me the speed needed to finish the task. Other highlights: We loved the food and were pleased with all areas. Quality was great in every venue and we tried them all: Lido, Dining Room, NY Pizza, Burger place, Pinnacle Grill, and Tamarind. Service was also great across the board with one exception: Pinnacle Grill breakfast. Nearly every day we had a service issue: Day 1 – they served coffee and croissants to all tables around us, but not us. Annoying. Days 2-4 – minor order issues – forgot bacon once, muesli switched with something else another time. Only on our last day when we were served by an assistant Matre’D was our service flawless. Now, all this didn’t dampen our experience, it just stood out since service was outstanding in every other venue all around. Entertainment – we went to the variety show in the main lounge on the first night. We wanted to like it but just couldn’t. The presentation was uninspiring and the choreography lacked flair. We didn’t go back the rest of the trip. On the other hand, the BB Kings Blues Club was outstanding. The band and the female singer were both good, but the male singer was absolutely phenomenal. He poured his heart and soul into every song. Because of their quality, every show we saw was packed 15 minutes prior to show time and was standing room only throughout. We didn’t attend Billboard Onboard after seeing those singers on the first night. We did not see Lincoln Center Stage either. Disembarkation was a minor concern for us. For the first time we booked a 10:25 flight out of Fort Lauderdale. While reading online we worried we may not be able to make it, therefore we carried our own bags off at 7:15. This whole experience was also incredibly efficient. We were completely off the ship and into a taxi by 7:25 and in the airport by 7:45. Now we had to figure out how to kill 2.7 hours in the airport. We won’t hesitate to book an early flight in the future. Our overall cruise experience was a solid 9 out of 10. More quality entertainment options would have made it a perfect 10. While we paid about double what we typically do for a cruise (HAL got about $3600 from us), for us it was well worth it. Would we have had a good time without all this? Yes. However, at the end we considered this a “Hall of Fame” worthy cruise because of all the extras we purchased.
  6. One of my favourite things is attending lectures on sea days. I've heard nothing about them since I've been planning our July cruise from Copenhagen to Boston. Have they all been stopped or can I hope for some intellectual stimulation on sea days?
  7. Hoping that someone will calm my nerves. In a Neptune Suite on the NA leaving Ft. Lauderdale on March 12. I have read that there have been some issues with the azipod(????). When I search this cruise on HAL website, it is not even listed anymore!!! Does this mean it is sold out? Please tell me yes. My travelling companion and I tried to sail a similar cruise on this exact week last year with disastrous results. This is a make up cruise and we have been looking forward to it for a year. thoughts?
  8. I have a cruise set for this July on the Nieuw Amsterdam to Alaska sailing out of Vancouver. We are going from Vancouver to Whittier in mid July. We are traveling with a party of 10. Most have had a Covid vaccine and a booster but there are a few within are party that have had neither. I believe that I have read that as of October 2022, we do not need a Covid vaccine to enter Canada. Are there any vaccinations or negative Covid tests to enter Canada and/or get on the Nieuw Amsterdam. I had many of our travel party ask recently. I tried to look it up on HAL website but it stated it was "not available yet" for our voyage. Just wanted to get a general idea of what we would need.
  9. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at pier 26 (starboard to) from 5:30am to 3:45 pm. She is leaving on a 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise. Also in port are Celebrity Beyond at pier 25 (6:00am-3:30pm), Celebrity Reflection at pier 29 (4:30am-5:00pm), and Harmony of the Seas at pier 18 (5:00am-4:30pm). The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/. Next up: Eurodam and Nieuw Statendam on Saturday, 10 December.
  10. Sorry folks….in all the sailaways that @Scrapnana did, I don’t remember this circumstance, but I’m sure it's happened! This is a full country music charter, with an itinerary that HAL doesn’t normally do, so I don’t have a photo of the itinerary. The ms Nieuw Amsterdam will be at pier 21 from 5:30 am to 11:00 pm, (late departure) and she is leaving on a 7 day itinerary, shown below. (Gotta say, I’m sure learning lots from filling in for Scrapnana!) Also in port is Celebrity Reflection at pier 29 (4:30 am to 4:30 pm). Regal Princess at pier 2 (5:00 am – 3:30 pm) Odyssey Of The Seas at pier 18 (5:15 am – 5:00 pm), Celebrity Beyond at pier 25 (6:00 am to 3:30 pm), and The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/. Next up: Rotterdam and Eurodam on Wednesday, January 25.
  11. We spent 14 days on board the N Statendam - 11/26-12/10. Had a great time, met some great people. *We were assigned cabin 1082, main deck 1. We had wonderful cabin stewards that took good care of us for all 14 days. Serviced our cabin twice per day. The cabin felt small, but was sufficient for our needs. Plenty of storage space, hangers, towels, pillows. Loved the larger shower. *Room service- only ordered 1x, but it was on time & delivered with a smile & correct. *MDR- only ate here 2x for dinner & 2x for breakfast. I felt the menu choices for dinner were extremely limited compared to the last time sailing HAL, service was good, but a bit slow IMO. Breakfast choices were better & a bit faster, but we chose to eat most meals on Lido. *Lido service was great, more choices & much faster. Pleasant wait staff, always offering to pour lemonade, coffee or water. But slow when ordering anything from the bar. *HIA pkg- we are not big drinkers, but loved the convenience of ordering specialty coffee, soda & water. We did try a few cocktails that we wouldn't normally purchase. The HIA made it easier to try new drinks w/o worrying about the cost. Loved the mango Mojito & Miami Vice. Shore ex credit was a nice savings, 2 specialty restaurant dinners were a plus- more on that later. Internet was horrible as I had read on here prior. Was told if I had an I phone it would have been better, but could not receive or send texts. Social media & email worked ok, but was spotty at times. *Tamarind- we enjoyed our dinner there, hubby ordered something not on the menu & they happily provided. *Pinnacle- we were not as pleased w/ Pinnacle, service was just ok, food was good, but not worth the extra cost IMO. We did order an extra appetizer & were charged the $7 plus gratuity. I find it odd that we could order as many sides as we wanted with no extra charge-no biggie, we knew about the extra charge for appetizer going in, so no surprises. *Grand Dutch Cafe- loved, loved this place. Service was always great, food was good too. Ordered the parfait a few times for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch & Bosche Bol (spelling) for a snack once. Always delicious & served with a smile. *Tours- we did only HAL sponsored tours since we had that credit. Some good & some bad. I won't go into any specifics since quality of tours is not really in HAL's control. I will mention them in my after cruise survey. But 1 thing I would like to mention. The shore ex credit is just that- you can spread it out over more than 1 tour & just pay the difference, doesn't have to be used on 1 tour. We had a total of $200 credit per person & used it for 4 tours, just paying the difference when cost totaled more than $200. +++ over all, we had a great cruise, loved the ship & crew. We enjoyed it so much, we booked NS for next April.
  12. Greeting Cruise Critic! This will be my first Holland America cruise. I just booked my family during Spring Break (11-Mar through 18-Mar) on the Nieuw Statedam out of Ft. Lauderdale. We're typically Royal Carribean or Carnival cruisers, but I booked this being that it was a great deal, with a Vista Suite being the same price as an Ocean View or worse on Carnival, and not really even in the ballpark of Royal Caribbean, for the same week and number of days. The itinerary is also great for kids (Nassau (blah), Amber Cove (so-so), Grand Turk (yeah!) and Half Moon Cay (yeah again!)). Aside from the stops, I was wondering if my kids (or myself) will be bored out of their minds during sea days and evenings? I know that I'm well below the age demographic, as I'm 39, my wife is 33, and our kids are 7 & 6...and none of us particularly care for pickle ball 🙂. I usually hit the casino when everyone goes to bed, so I'll find some entertainment there. Do the rooms have interactive TVs where we can watch movies and shows on demand? The newer Carnival and RC ships have this and my kids really enjoy it, but the older Carnival boats just have a few low quality tv stations, and a bunch of cruise line promotional stuff. Any tips, good-to-knows, etc. for traveling with young kids on Holland would be much appreciated!
  13. Hello-we were on our first holiday cruise 12/27-1/7. I will try and make this brief as I don't want to do a full blown review. Several firsts for us on this cruise-it was my 3rd HAL cruise and first time with an aft cabin, first time eating in the Pinnacle, first time with the HIA package and first time cruising during the holidays-here goes, - Absolutely loved the aft cabin-deck 6 and the views are awesome, the wake is so relaxing and we were surprised how quiet it was at night-loved the decorations all over the ship. She was beautiful and clean and actually looked new I thought. - Like the muster drill procedure-very quick and easy-we got that out of the way within the hour after boarding. - it's been discussed here before and there were signs at all the bars about now just paying the difference in the price of drinks if you go over your price limit-we had the SBP and all my drinks are less than 11 anyway-will definitely do the SBP next time. - We had the interactive TV-probably a 46 inch which was very nice. - Ended up eating most meals at Lido-so much variety IMO and loved the stir fry-we ate in the MDR once and we just don't like eating dinner for 1-2 hours-ordered room service breakfast 3 times and it was on-time and good each time. Tried Dive-In for the first time and liked it especially the fries. Still amazes me to hear people complain about the food with so much to choose from-if you can adjust the time to eat breakfast or lunch you can really avoid the crowds. - Pinnacle Grill-very impressed with the service and pace of the orders-we were in and out in less than an hour and a half-the clothesline bacon may have been the best thing I had on this cruise-yes they charge extra for appetizers but not for sides so we had plenty to eat. - Another reason we decided on this cruise was we visited 5 new ports for us-have wanted to visit St. Maarten for a long time and it did not disappoint-the Sunset Grill and Bar was awesome and we were surprised how busy the airport was and would definitely go back here. - Thoughts on the other new ports-St. Lucia was ok but not a must see again. Went to Copa beach in Barbados and it was the clearest water I have seen and would do this again-was told the Boatyard is even better but it was full. Martinique was nice and went to the ruins of Pelee which was cool to see. St. Kitts was our least favorite-nice shops in the port area but very dirty in town and almost felt unsafe-again not a must see for us. - A little surprised at how many kids were on board-a lot of them were unsupervised especially in the Sea View pool-we like the thermal spa pool and never got in the outdoor pools Good luck with finding a poolside lounger anyway-people must hog them overnight. - Went to St. Johns on a catamaran and it was windy and pretty rough but enjoyed anyway-would like to go on a calm day. - Beautiful day at HMC-the beach and water this day was gorgeous but I can't believe the all-aboard is 2:30-not enough time to really enjoy the island. - Overall had a great time-met some new friends and the crew and staff were amazing-even got a chance to talk to Captain Eric for a few minutes. BB Kings and the Rolling Stones Room bands were great. Not sure we will do the holiday thing again as there were just too many kids running around (literally) !
  14. It will be interesting to see if the other itineraries remove Skagway. It seems the ongoing rockslide issues affecting the Railroad Dock may affect 2023 cruises as well. https://www.cruisehive.com/holland-america-cruise-no-longer-visiting-popular-alaskan-port/93931
  15. Eurodam will be at pier 19 (Starboard to) from 4:30am to 4 pm. She is leaving on a 10-day Panama Canal Sunfarer cruise. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at pier 21 (starboard to) from 6:15 to 3pm. She is doing a 7-day Southern Caribbean cruise. Rotterdam will be at pier 26 (port to) from 5:30 am to 4 pm. She is going on a 10-day Southern Caribbean Seafarer cruise. Also in port are Celebrity Beyond at pier 25 (6am-3:30pm), Celebrity Reflection at pier 29 (4:45am-3:30pm), and Harmony of the Seas at pier 18 (5:15am-4:30pm). The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/. Next up: Nieuw Statendam on Saturday, 26 November.
  16. I'm in the middle of flights, am at JFK, and my laptop won't connect to wifi!! So, this will be pretty funny..... Ptz camera available here: https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/
  17. I recently returned from a 5-day sailing on NIEUW AMSTERDAM which departed Port Everglades on October 25, 2022. Our ports were Key West, Half Moon Cay, and Nassau. We had excellent weather throughout. For reference this was my 137th cruise, with the last being on CELEBRITY INFINITY in September (so some comparison there) and my most recent HAL cruise being in February 2019 on NIEUW STATENDAM. I'm not loyal to any one line and enjoy experiencing them all. Attached is a link to 256 photos and 2 videos mostly of the ship. Also included are scans of the daily programs and some other materials. https://www.flickr.com/photos/eroller/albums/72177720303480783 Overall the experience was a bit lackluster in several regards (especially when compared to the Celebrity cruise prior and the previous HAL cruise in 2019). This is not to say we didn't have a great time. We did. This cruise was exactly what was needed. A perfect low-key getaway at a fantastic price. For what we paid we absolutely got our money's worth, but it doesn't change the fact we noticed plenty of cut-backs even from our last HAL cruise in 2019. Would I sail on HAL again? Absolutely. I never write off an entire line because of one so-so experience. If I did I probably wouldn't be cruising much. All the lines have their good and bad days so to speak. I'm not going to write a blow by blow review for this trip, but instead just highlight what impressed and what didn't. Remember these are my opinions based on my perceptions and experiences. Yours may differ and that is fine, and you are free to agree or disagree although it doesn't change what I experienced. For anyone interested our cabin was 10032. It was a Spa Balcony up on Deck 10. Great location and that is why I chose the cabin ... for easy access to the outside decks. The "spa" description was pretty much meaningless. Besides a couple yoga mats, a wood mat in the bathroom, a Bluetooth speaker which did not work, and two bottles of water along with three flavored cans of sparkling water ... there was no difference between this and any other balcony cabin. Lets start with the positive. What Impressed: The ship looked fantastic. In fact better than when I sailed on her in 2010 when she was brand new. HAL has brightened up the ship with new carpets and soft furnishings and the result is very pleasing to the eye. I loved the art-deco touches. Maintenance was top notch and there was work always being carried out around the ship. Excellent selection of on-demand movies in the cabin which were free. I usually don't pay much attention to the cabin TV but entertainment was a little lacking on this cruise Great poolside service - never a wait or problem getting a drink Unlimited towels by the pool - always appreciated HAL blanket in the cabin. Great for afternoon naps. Why other lines don't do this is puzzling Full wrap-around teak promenade deck. In fact this is the last HAL ship that has this traditional feature done in the traditional way. Super quick boarding process. Between parking the car and walking onboard ship it was about 10 minutes. Maybe a record Awesome made-to-order burgers by the pool at Dive-in. Yes there was a small wait and they gave you pager, but well worth it. Probably the best burgers at sea. Mariner Club keepsake HAL tile - I'm so glad HAL is still doing this wonderful keepsake of the ship and cruise. It's all about the attention to detail. The ship itself was super spacious and just the right size. The only exceptions were the Lido Market and BB King's Club which were often overcrowded feeling. The ship was not at capacity. I had heard about 3/4 full. Clothe towels in the public restrooms. A small detail but it's the little details that add up and make a substantial difference. Inexpensive drink prices. A standard cocktail was around $8.50 including gratuity. This is much more reasonable than the majority of cruise lines I sail which are over $10 for the same drink ... and some as high as $14. Nice selection of merchandise in the shops. Good variety and some very cool logo items. Excellent interactive TV and Navigator App. One of the better systems of all the lines I've sailed. Easy to use and great information. HAL Origins Presentation - I absolutely loved this presentation about the 150 year long history of HAL. So well done and the CD did a great job narrating it and brought her own style to the presentation. The only odd thing was the timing. It was featured the first night when a welcome show would normally be presented and it was never repeated. It was very lightly attended. Maybe 40 people which is unfortunate. What didn't impress: The food overall - small portions, bland, lacking variety or finesse. Deserts were tasteless. Too many pasta choices - obviously a budget cut. Rustic Lasagna featured on the dinner menu 3 times on a 5 night cruise. Ridiculous. No "always available" section on the dinner menu. Most cruise lines offer this. The menus were rather basic and sometimes the selection limited. Steak only offered once on this five night cruise. Plenty of pasta though. Again clearly budget cuts. All the waiters insisted on taking the desert order along with everything else. That is not fine dining. The desert order should be taken after the main meal is finished. A cheeseburger on the room service menu has a $5 upcharge. Once daily cabin service is now standard. Our cabin service made this clear on the first day, and said we would have to request turn-down if we wanted it but it seemed discouraged to us. Is twice a day cabin servicing absolutely necessary? Of course not but it's one of those lovely details that differentiates a cruise from a stay at a Holiday Inn. Quit dumbing down the cruise experience. No turn-down with chocolates at night. I missed this. We did get a "morning" turn-down once where two chocolates and a towel animal were left. The Mariner comp drink was only good for the specialty Mariner cocktail. Make it good for a cocktail of your choice. No pizza by the slice ... you have to order a full pizza. No grab and go. The Lido Market seemed to have more limited hours and selection compared to other lines I've sailed. After 11:30pm nothing. Crew serves everything in the Lido Market. Some will view this as a positive and some negative. On Celebrity just a month prior you could serve yourself. No stir sticks in cocktails No morning CD show on TV - I rarely watch TV on a cruise but for some reason I like watching the CD show when I wake up. No live music by the pool ... ever Lack of live music around the ship. Besides the dueling pianos and the band in the BB King's Club there was nothing. How about some pre-dinner cocktail music in the Ocean Bar by a trio, pianist, or guitar soloist? Nope. Not on this cruise. Live music was truly lacking. The production shows were a joke. Extremely low budget. Five dancers. No singers. No live band. No sets. Just a video backdrop. The one show with actual singers happened to be the two dueling piano players doing double duty and looking clearly uncomfortable on the big stage. The five dancers danced around their pianos. They were perfectly fine in the lounge setting, but not suited for the big stage. Probably the lowest budget production shows I've seen on any ship, even really small ones. I felt sorry for the performers. Two things I missed from the old days of HAL (my first HAL cruise was in 1979) are the chimes by the bellboy that used to walk throughout the public areas announcing dinner. I get why this is not done anymore as there is the open seating option now, but none the less I miss it. I also miss the lovely display of mints at the dining room exit along with the bellboys to serve them. That was such a nice touch but those days are long gone. Again even with the negatives we had a great time, and I always put my expectations in line with what I paid ... and this was an inexpensive cruise. Unfortunately there are lines better suited for me and my expectations for now at least. The food and entertainment were the biggest letdowns. I've been sailing with HAL for 43 years now and I'll continue to do so, but probably not for a few years. In the meantime I wish HAL the very best and continued success, along with everyone that loves sailing on this historic line. Happy cruising!
  18. We did something we normally wouldn’t and upgraded for an upcoming Nieuw Amsterdam cruise. We got a Deluxe Spa Verandah Stateroom on the 11th floor. What do we get with this room? Is it a good one?
