  1. Quick question......I called Holland direct and received two different answers. We booked the Nieuw Statendam room 7107 balcony room. I know the balcony is larger. I can see from the deck plan it's true. Well another agent said the room was also a bit larger than a regular balcony room. Was wonder if anyone can confirm. The 1st agent said the room was NOT larger. Not sure who to believe. Thanks!
  2. This was our first HAL cruise and our 7th overall. DW and I had wanted to try HAL for a few years and this was a great deal on the last minute sale. We booked a verandah guarantee about 3 weeks out, and about a week before sailing, were offered an upsell to a Signature Suite for just a few dollars more. We snapped that up and looked forward to getting on the Nieuw Amsterdam. EMBARKATION We had flown into Fort Lauderdale the day before, so were able to take an early shuttle to Port Everglades and be in line early. The terminal was opened up around 10:30 and we were checked
  3. Hi, we are traveling on Nieuw Amsterdam in May with a group of 18. We booked with a TA and asked for balcony rooms. We are in 5087 and I’m wondering if it’s an obstructive view. Wish we booked direct as I don’t think TA is looking out for our best interests. TIA
  4. Cannot find much information on Tamarind on the Nieuw Statendam. When the ship came out, Tamarind was supposed to have an outdoor eating area overlooking the Sea View pool area. Has anyone actually experienced this and how enjoyable (or not) was it?
  5. Are there chairs on the outside promenade deck of the Nieuw Amsterdam? Recently was on the Koningsdam and they had none. Used to sail Holland and remember the teak wood lounge chairs under the life boats on the promenade deck.
  6. We are looking to take our first cruise on HAL. Can anyone give me some input as to whether an aft facing balcony in the Mediterranean is a good pick?
  7. I have just gained access to the Lloyds Register of Shipping Classification Society records for Nieuw Amsterdam. There is a Note to her Classification status of Imminent Action required related to her inoperative Starboard Azimuth Podded Propulsor. The Imposed Date of this required action was 14 Dec 2019 and the Due Date of this required action is 02 Feb 2020. While there is nothing new here relative to what we have learned over the last 36 days, it appears that Lloyds would not have let this situation go on for very much longer. (The word Imminent is shown below a red triangle with a red exc
  8. I am a loyal HAL fan, not the most experienced cruiser, but have completed 3 back to back cruises and one re-positioning cruise, covering the Western and Eastern Mediterranean, Western Europe, Baltic countries, Japan to Alaska and most recently from 2 June to 23 June the Norwegian fjords on the Nieuw Statendam. My purpose in this review is not to deal with every aspect of the cruise on NS, as most topics are well covered in the many reviews published since its launch. It suffices to say she is a beautiful ship, well designed in all respects (other than the closed in effect of the Promen
  9. Anyone know who the Pinnacle Grill Manager is on the Nieuw Statendam? Did they transfer the manager from the Koningsdam?
  10. Planning to cruise the Mediterranean 2020, previously enjoyed Neptune Suites, veranda, Lanai, and interior rooms. We would appreciate any experiences that would recommend reserving an aft veranda.
  11. It's taken a while for me to get my review posted, but here it is! For background, I sailed on NA from 12/21/19 - 12/28/19 with my 14 year old daughter. This was our first HAL cruise, though we have sailed on Royal Caribbean a number of times previously. I initially booked an inside room and about two weeks before the sailing I received an upsell offer to move to an obstructed window room. I took it since it was only $39 per person and I liked the idea of natural light. Then the week before our sailing, I received another upsell offer to move to a balcony room for just $79 per pers
  12. We’re sailing Feb 8 (hopefully) on the Nieuw Amsterdam. Can anyone tell me who the Piano Players were on your cruise and if you know how long their contract runs for. TIA Keith
  13. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at pier 26 (port to) from 0630-1700. She will be doing a 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise. Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos (16 Dec 0800-1500); San Juan, Puerto Rico (17 Dec 1300-2300); St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (18 Dec 0800-1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (20 Dec 0800-1500); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (21 Dec a0700) Also in port are Carnival Sunrise at pier 4 from 0430-1600, Celebrity Equinox at pier 25 from 0600-1530, Independence OTS at pier 18 from 0615-1630, Majesty OTS at pier 19 from 1015 (???seems late since she is coming from Nassau)-1
  14. Hi all! First time posting here on CC. My wife and I are sailing on the Nieuw Statendam this coming December with another couple and wondering if the family cabana in the Retreat is large enough for 4 adults and what the interior configuration is like. Are there 4 lounges inside? Thanks in advance for any info on this.
  15. Hello Everyone, sailing away today! Will try and post menus and other information. I plan to get internet for sea days and use my International calling plan in port. We boarded about 12 and were on quickly. Had a problem with my sisters drink package and was happy to stand in the Club Orange line (just one person ahead of me). Photo is drink events and cost.
  16. Quick synopsis- Pros- clean ship, friendly crew, food in mdr was pretty good, early room service was punctual, bands were very good- blues were excellent. Cons- muster was a clusterf***, go to your station, told to go to your room and watch a video then come back, video never played, went back to station and watched someone put on a life vest. Crew told me it was the first time with the new in room video for muster, too bad the video never came on. If you want to use the sports deck make sure there is not a pickleball group that has booked the majority of time the entire
  17. I do not normally rant about something in print, but this time I am just plain mad! We just received notice that we have been rebooked on the Zuiderdam on Feb 1 with a 7 CATEGORY DOWNGRADE from our Neptune Suite to a lower level promenade deck 5 balcony cabin. We received no communications from our travel agent, and nothing other than a notice of our new cabin number from Holland and an email with our new confirmation number. They did not even identify the new ship nor the reason for this change. I was able to contact my travel agent a few minutes ago and he did not receive notice either.
  18. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at pier 26 (port to) from 0530-1700. She will be leaving on a 7-day Tropical Caribbean cruise. Key West, Florida (08 Dec 0800-1700); Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos (10 Dec 0800-1700); Amber Cove, Dominican Republic (11 Dec 0800-1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (13 Dec 0700-1500); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (14 Dec a0700) Also in port are Adventure OTS at pier 29 from 0430-1730, Carnival Magic at pier 4 from 0400-1600, Celebrity Equinox at pier 25 from 0600-1530, Crown Princess at pier 21 from 0545-1600, and Sky Princess at pier 2 from 0500-1600
  19. I have not seen any posts about the status of Nieuw Amsterdam's broken azipod other than that she got back to Port Everglades today and has left for the new cruise. I asked on FB if anyone knew if they actually fixed the azipod and someone pointed me at a post from HAL earlier in the week which said "The ship has been cleared as safe to sail by several regulatory authorities and meets all international safety standards." Between that and the previously announced plan to return an hour late to Port Everglades next Saturday, I wonder if she isn't running on one azipod and got approval to opera
  20. We are considering the Transatlantic on NA in April and wondering if there is anyone who can tell us about Club Orange on that ship. We plan to be in a Neptune suite as we have been in the past so we are concerned about dining. Normally we are on the upper level of MDR at a table for two at second seating and find the prospects of being in a roped off area in the dining room very unappealing. It would be out first experience on a ship with CO. I admit we have some trepidation about this program. I guess everyone may have different perspectives on that. Although we are 4 Star Mariners we have n
  21. Just looking for opinions from you all (southern a little) on whether or not you feel crowded on these ships. My DH and I have been on the Zaandam twice and the Nieuw Amsterdam once but that was only for 3 nights. Thanks
  22. My 2 sisters, daughter ( who just turned 50) and I are sailing on the Nieuw Amsterdam this Saturday, January 11. I want to treat her to a special birthday dinner at Tamarind. Can anyone recommend which night would be best to reserve? Thanks!
  23. Hi all! We're going on a cruise to Norway on the Nieuw Statendam in late July. I love to get up early and swim before heading off for the day. Can anyone who has been on the NS or is on it now tell me when they open the Lido and Seaview pools in the morning? thank you!
  24. Hi. Can anyone tell me if the afts on deck 5 and 6 are covered or partially covered? Any reason to choose one deck over the other? Many thanks. Fran :)
  25. Am looking ahead to 2020 Caribbean schedule. Specifically, would like some input into which deck would be best on the stern to try to ensure it would be reasonably quiet. Any help appreciated.
