  1. I have just gained access to the Lloyds Register of Shipping Classification Society records for Nieuw Amsterdam. There is a Note to her Classification status of Imminent Action required related to her inoperative Starboard Azimuth Podded Propulsor. The Imposed Date of this required action was 14 Dec 2019 and the Due Date of this required action is 02 Feb 2020. While there is nothing new here relative to what we have learned over the last 36 days, it appears that Lloyds would not have let this situation go on for very much longer. (The word Imminent is shown below a red triangle with a red exc
  2. It's taken a while for me to get my review posted, but here it is! For background, I sailed on NA from 12/21/19 - 12/28/19 with my 14 year old daughter. This was our first HAL cruise, though we have sailed on Royal Caribbean a number of times previously. I initially booked an inside room and about two weeks before the sailing I received an upsell offer to move to an obstructed window room. I took it since it was only $39 per person and I liked the idea of natural light. Then the week before our sailing, I received another upsell offer to move to a balcony room for just $79 per pers
  3. We’re sailing Feb 8 (hopefully) on the Nieuw Amsterdam. Can anyone tell me who the Piano Players were on your cruise and if you know how long their contract runs for. TIA Keith
  4. We are looking to take our first cruise on HAL. Can anyone give me some input as to whether an aft facing balcony in the Mediterranean is a good pick?
  5. Can anyone please offer an opinion on whether port or starboard veranda would be better on this voyage? It starts in Amsterdam and heads southern around the coast of span, and then heads through the Mediterranean ending in Rome.
  6. We just booked a last minute trip on NS for this weekend. (My first on HAL!) Despite having a balcony (another first!) I'd like to be on deck for sailaway and watch the Dutch countryside slip away before we head out to sea, and then enjoy the fjords later in the week. I can't tell from looking at the deck plans. Are there any front-facing decks? Do they open the bow? There's always the gym, I suppose. Share your secrets.
  7. Quick synopsis- Pros- clean ship, friendly crew, food in mdr was pretty good, early room service was punctual, bands were very good- blues were excellent. Cons- muster was a clusterf***, go to your station, told to go to your room and watch a video then come back, video never played, went back to station and watched someone put on a life vest. Crew told me it was the first time with the new in room video for muster, too bad the video never came on. If you want to use the sports deck make sure there is not a pickleball group that has booked the majority of time the entire
  8. New Ship! Few threads and/or reviews! (1) HAL deckplans studiously avoid calling the Crows Nest, the Crows Nest. (It is the Exploration Cafe and the EXC.) Surely they know we will not be dissuaded so easily? It will take a generation to lose the name just like the Captain's Corner! We were on the Zuiderdam this spring, the Crows Nest bar and the Exploration Cafe had merged, which was fine with us as we could segue right from Lattes to Pain Killers! However, the pics on CruiseDeckPlans appear to show only an espresso bar and not a BAR set up. Tell me it is not so, if we drink coffee
  9. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at pier 26 (port to) from 0530-1700. She will be leaving on a 7-day Tropical Caribbean cruise. Key West, Florida (08 Dec 0800-1700); Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos (10 Dec 0800-1700); Amber Cove, Dominican Republic (11 Dec 0800-1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (13 Dec 0700-1500); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (14 Dec a0700) Also in port are Adventure OTS at pier 29 from 0430-1730, Carnival Magic at pier 4 from 0400-1600, Celebrity Equinox at pier 25 from 0600-1530, Crown Princess at pier 21 from 0545-1600, and Sky Princess at pier 2 from 0500-1600
  10. I do not normally rant about something in print, but this time I am just plain mad! We just received notice that we have been rebooked on the Zuiderdam on Feb 1 with a 7 CATEGORY DOWNGRADE from our Neptune Suite to a lower level promenade deck 5 balcony cabin. We received no communications from our travel agent, and nothing other than a notice of our new cabin number from Holland and an email with our new confirmation number. They did not even identify the new ship nor the reason for this change. I was able to contact my travel agent a few minutes ago and he did not receive notice either.
  11. I have not seen any posts about the status of Nieuw Amsterdam's broken azipod other than that she got back to Port Everglades today and has left for the new cruise. I asked on FB if anyone knew if they actually fixed the azipod and someone pointed me at a post from HAL earlier in the week which said "The ship has been cleared as safe to sail by several regulatory authorities and meets all international safety standards." Between that and the previously announced plan to return an hour late to Port Everglades next Saturday, I wonder if she isn't running on one azipod and got approval to opera
  12. Former "statendam", now called "Vasco da gama" was drifting for quite some time off the coast af australia. A "horror" experience according to passengers. https://www.2gb.com/absolutely-horrific-passenger-calls-in-from-cruise-ship-stranded-at-sea/ Quote: Listener Ian called Steve Price from his cabin saying it’s been “absolutely horrific”. “We’re drifting. We’ve got no power, no water, no toilets, no cooking, nothing! “They’ve got auxiliary power to light the corridors but that is it. It’s like a ghost ship, mate.” Unquote
  13. My 2 sisters, daughter ( who just turned 50) and I are sailing on the Nieuw Amsterdam this Saturday, January 11. I want to treat her to a special birthday dinner at Tamarind. Can anyone recommend which night would be best to reserve? Thanks!
  14. We are considering the Transatlantic on NA in April and wondering if there is anyone who can tell us about Club Orange on that ship. We plan to be in a Neptune suite as we have been in the past so we are concerned about dining. Normally we are on the upper level of MDR at a table for two at second seating and find the prospects of being in a roped off area in the dining room very unappealing. It would be out first experience on a ship with CO. I admit we have some trepidation about this program. I guess everyone may have different perspectives on that. Although we are 4 Star Mariners we have n
  15. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at pier 26 (starboard to) from 0515-1700. She is heading out on a 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise. Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos (18 Nov 0800-1500); San Juan, Puerto Rico (19 Nov 1300-2300); St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (20 Nov 0800-1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (22 Nov 0800-1500); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (23 Nov a0700) It is a busy Saturday in Port Everglades. Also in port are Carnival Sunrise at pier 4 from 0430-1600, Celebrity Equinox at pier 25 from 0600-1530, Independence OTS at pier 18 from 0615-1630, Island Princess at pier 2 from 0
  16. Statendam and Ryndam will be reunited at Cruise and Maritime Voyagesin 2021; CMV are proud to announce the acquisition of two more cruise ships to join our expanding ocean fleet - increasing to eight cruise ships in 2021. CMV will take delivery of P&O Australia's Pacific Dawn (tbr) and Pacific Aria (tbr) in Singapore on the 2nd March and 2nd May 2021 respectively, increasing lower bed fleet capacity to 9000 berths and passenger capacity by 30% in 2021. cruiseandmaritime.com/news/two-more-ships-for-2021
  17. Nieuw Amsterdam will be in Port Everglades from 0530-1700. She will be at pier 26 (starboard to) before leaving on a 7-day Tropical Caribbean cruise. Key West, Florida (24 Nov 0800-1700); Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos (26 Nov 0800-1700); Amber Cove, Dominican Republic (27 Nov 0800-1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (29 Nov 0700-1500); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (30 Nov a0700) Also in port are Adventure OTS at pier 29 from 0430-1730, Carnival Magic at pier 4 from 0500-1600, and Celebrity Equinox at pier 25 from 0545-1530. 18. Am looking ahead to 2020 Caribbean schedule. Specifically, would like some input into which deck would be best on the stern to try to ensure it would be reasonably quiet. Any help appreciated.
  19. Does anyone happen to have the 7 day Eastern Caribbean from Ft Lauderdale (Key West, Amber Cove, Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay) daily programs that they can upload? I am dying to see what they have to offer during the day. Also, trying to see when Gala nights are....etc. We are sailing this March! Can't wait! Thank you!!
  20. Hi all, We have booked on the NA - Tropical Caribbean - I am looking at the available cabins at the sale price - on deck 8, the ship layout as provided by HAL has Neptune Suites on both sides of the ship. When I look at the cabins online, they have each been converted into two aft balcony cabins. Question - does anyone know if the cabins are the same size as the other aft balcony cabins? For the ones on the far port and starboard, do you get the large part of the wraparound balcony? So tempted to try and get one of these - but worried about the balcony si
  21. We just finished our first HAL cruise, a week on the Nieuw Amsterdam. Already looking to book our next. Because I work for a large university, we can only really travel from about 12/12/20 to 01/10/21. We travel with four of our youngest children(ages 7-17) and usually bring one or two extra with us, so cost is definitely a factor. We LOVED Half Moon Cay. We don't like the itinerary on the Nieuw Amsterdam the week we are looking at (alas, no HMC!); none of us have ever been to any of the ports that the Veendam will sail to that week (Trujillo Honduras, Costa Maya Mexico, Guatemala, and Be
  22. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at pier 26 (starboard to) from 0545-1700. This will be a "Faith and Family" charter. Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (10 Nov 0800-1700); Falmouth, Jamaica (12 Nov 0800-1700); George Town, Grand Cayman (13 Nov 0800-1700); Key West, Florida (15 Nov 0800-1700); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (16 Nov a0700) Also in port are Adventure OTS at pier 29 from 0430-1730, Carnival Magic at pier 4 from 0500-1600, Independence OTS at pier 18 from 0530-1630, and Celebrity Equinox at pier 25 from 0600-1530. The PTZtv webcams can be found at https://www.porteverglade
  23. Presumably repaired, Nieuw Amsterdam is under way and headed for Port Everglades
  24. I finally got my cabin assignment, and this cabin is located near the forward elevators, with a handicapped VD on one side and an oceanview on the other. When I looked at the deck plan, the cabin itself looks like it's set a little farther back than some others and the balcony looks to be a bit deeper than the corresponding VDs on that deck. Is this correct? Has anyone ever stayed in either this cabin or the corresponding one on the starboard side? I assume the configuration is the same on the Eurodam, so if anyone has experience with these cabins on either ship, I'd love some feedbac
  25. We are currently on the Nieuw Amsterdam that is stranded in Port Everglades due to machanical issues. Cabin has strong mildew/musty odors and we didn't have a response for 4 hours after reporting the issue to shipboard services. When we didn't get a response from shipboard services within a couple hours I called HAL directly and finally got our stewards to show up to check out the odor issue (4 hours after reporting it). We're from Florida so we can stay in a hotel in Lauderdale any time we like which essentially is what we are doing now. Surprisingly several bars are out of certain spirits
