  1. Spending New Years Eve aboard Nieuw Statendam. Anyone Else?
  2. We are booked on HAL Nieuw Amsterdam Alaska Inside Passage, RT Vancouver August 3, 2019. We are waitlisted for 8:00 pm dinner seating. My question is how difficult is it for a group of 6 to just show up at the later seating and wait for a table. Has anyone experienced this before? What would other options be?
  3. Hello, My friends and I are new to HAL. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the single cabins on Koningsdam. We are assuming that any insights would equally apply to Nieuw Statendam. I will be in the cabin by myself so the Single cabins appear nice. However my friend pointed out that the square footage of a Inside/Inside cabin is larger, and is cheaper. Granted the Single cabins have a window, however they all appear to be on deck one, forward, under the World Stage. Any insights or suggestions for this? Are the Singles smaller and not worth the extra money?
  4. Starting a roll call for Nieuw Amsterdam, Alaska Inside Passage, 7 night, RT from Vancouver August 3, 2019. Taking our two 20-something kids (plus their significant other/friend) for a family trip. First time on HAL, first time to Alaska, and very excited!
  5. Sorry can’t edit title. 99 days to go. Time to pack
  6. I am interested in the positions of: Chief Engineer, Culinary Operations Manager, Dining Room Manager, Chief Housekeeper, Beverage Manager, Pinnacle Grill Manager, and Cruise Director. Any information that anyone can share will be appreciated by those of us booked on the Nieuw Statendam's initial voyages. Thank you.
  7. Nice article on the Holland America Blog today about the new MS Statendam. https://www.hollandamerica.com/blog/destinations/europe_new/holland-america-line-takes-delivery-of-nieuw-statendam-from-fincantieri-shipyard/

  9. The three weeks we had to prepare for this cruise are almost over so I am running out of research time. Please forgive me for asking something that has been discussed several times before. I promise a trip report when I return for all the help everyone has given me. Can't begin to tell you how excited we are to travel with HAL. 1) Wine Package - I was ready to do a six bottle wine package in the lower price level and then looked at some of the possible options. It looks like I am paying $30+ for a $6.00 bottle of wine. I don't think I can swallow that, literally. So, I will bring the two allowed bottles and am thinking about bringing some additional ones that I enjoy and pay the corkage fee. How does this happen during check-in? Do you put the wine in a small roll on bag and just tell them to charge the you corking fee? Does this confuse things in the dining room when you come carrying your own wine? I am not sure about any wine being available at the ports we are visiting but if so, could we pick that up and pay corking fee? 2) Tours - I was thinking about booking a jeep tour with ABC (seem to be #1) but then ran across the toursbylocals website. Anyone use those? They offer a half day private tour for $180. We really want to explore Aruba to decide if we would like to plan a family trip there, so a private tour would help accomplish this. Looked at car rentals but did not find a place that had good reviews. I did reserve a car in Curacao with Advanced Car Rentals. Good reviews but it seems odd to hand someone $75 and then drive off in their car. 3) Disembarkation - My hubbie was excited to see the option of sending the luggage straight to the airport from the ship. Has anyone used this feature? Looks to be $19.95 per person. Do we need to book a ride to the airport? Flight is not until 2:45. We are driving down from VA in a rental and flying back. I did not want the stress of flying even the day before after our last flying disaster that caused to lose two days on a trip to Kauai. Govt. shutdown sealed the deal.
  10. We are sailing on the Nieuw Amsterdam in 11 days (yeah!!)... Can anyone tell me if they set up pickleball courts on this ship, and if yes, are they set up every day and do they hold organized games/tournaments? Thanks!
  11. I noticed that deck 4 has the life boats. Do they obstruct the views from the deck 5 balconies?
  12. Hi all, DH and I are considering a date in March for this cruise. While HAL trends older, I am a bit worried we will be surrounded by young spring breakers. Does anyone have experience that they can share? We are all in for fun but a bit over 24-7 partying. Many thanks.
  13. Starting a roll call for Mexico cruise from San Diego.
  14. I have read that it is possible to make table reservations for three days at a time... Can you make a table reservation if you are assigned Open Seating?
  15. Have all of the suites on NA been updated with the new soft goods? If so, is this all suite levels? We’re in a Neptune Guarantee the end of February and a Signature the end of October and just wondering if they’ve all been updated. Thank you.
  16. Where does Nieuw Amsterdam dock in St Thomas, Havensight (spelling?) or Crown Bay? Is there a way to print out airplane boarding passes on the ship? Any good tips about this ship? We're doing St Thomas, Grand Turk, and Puerto Rico.
  17. We are looking at a 14 night Eastern & Western Caribbean sailing next March :p Has any one sailed on this new ship & if so what was your impression of the foo d quality ,service & presentation , the comfort of the cabins & the general over all look of this new ship ? TIA for your replies :p
  18. Hello, I’m looking into a family cruise to Alaska on the Nieuw Amsterdam. I was hoping someone could provide guidance on food choices at the Lido buffet, as I’d like to see whether it will work for one of my kids. My son has sensory issues and prefers very simple food with few ingredients - for example, if he eats pasta it is plain or with cheese, no sauce or other ingredients mixed in. I’ve looked at kids menus for the main dining room and can see that there are several items that will work for him, but I’m sure that on some nights we won’t feel like sitting through a formal dinner. Are there any basic picky eater-friendly menu items that are consistently served at the buffet? For example, if there is a made to order pasta or sandwich station, that would work. Thank you in advance!
  19. We are planning on going on the Niuew Statendam this March and know that the Koningsdam has a problem with smoke wafting into the Music Walk. I'm quite sensitive to smoke so it'd be nice if this isn't a problem. Does anyone (especially people onboard right now) know if HAL solved this issue on the NS?
  20. Instead of stuff this year for Christmas, we gave the kids a cruise March23-31. This will be our second HAL cruise. We booked a lido deck cabana, we figured the teens would rather be near the pool then up in the retreat, I have book the laundry package ( to save clothes everywhere) we have the SBP and we ordered the quench package for the teens. Prepaid the gratuities booked dinner at each specialty restaurant. The ports we are going to are ones we go to when we go and stay in Mexico, so the kids are not into excursions there, they rather explore the city a bit then have the ship to themselves. So have I missed anything?
  21. Does anyone know if stateroom has a couch? Thinking about upgrading. Have searched on line and it shows various arrangements of L Large interior staterooms. Does anyone have a picture...that would be great! Thanks so much!
  22. Both ships are in Half Moon Cay today—perfect weather here!
  23. Wow this ship is amazing! We’re on the 7 day holiday cruise / 3rd sailing for the ship. Still has the nice new ship smell ‘! there are only 2 negatives! And not sure if these are fleet wide.... Having big issues with beverage package every day. Apparently there is issues with the system, but each day we have had to visits guest services to try and remove charges that are inconsistent with the package.... now down to about $50 dispute... no consistency in where or when the charges are applied. spoke to F&B manager today who says this is effecting around 300 stateroom accounts, and every effort on land and sea is being made to fix it, but still no offer of a partial refund to compensate for the inconvenience of visiting guest services every day. Apparently no one on ship is empowered to make such a decision! Not even the captain! Unfortunately also had to raise the issue of poor services in the pinical last night... slow service, glasses / plates not cleared ... food too salty to eat (we were offered alternative dishes , but with the terrible service starting to ruin our Christmas evening turned it down. i appreciate that these points may sound trivial, but have to admit, this is our 12th cruise and 5th Christmas cruise we’re going to head back to Celebrity again next year. Which is a shame as this ship is amazing! And hopefully HA will wake up and realise this is not the start the ship deserves. any other guests having issues with drinks packages ? And remember - don’t leave it until the last day to check your bill!
  24. Hello all, I'm a relatively new cruiser to the Holland America line, so I'm still trying to figure out their pricing structure/offers, etc. I just did my 23rd cruise (on the Rotterdam) and absolutely loved it! (Photo review in my signature). I've been scouring all of the cruiselines trying to find a good option for Spring Break with my family next year (March, 2019) and came across the Nieuw Statendam. We're all excited about the possibility. My first question regarding pricing is this: I'm finding third-party sellers majorly undercutting HAL! I've never experienced this with Royal Caribbean or Carnival. Yes, third-party vendors may throw in some onboard credit or something from their commissions, but in this case, I'm talking about a huge price difference. I called HAL to see if there was a fare I wasn't seeing online and whether I could book directly with them and get this fare, but she said no. She wasn't really interested in telling me any other fare options. Hmm... So I'm looking at the VH Veranda cabin on the Nieuw Statendam and since the ship isn't actually sailing yet, it's hard for me to pinpoint exactly what I should be paying. Trying to gauge what we consider good value. At the moment, I have a booking for the 4 of us in a VH (one that is on the edge of the lifeboat, not front and center) for $2300 all in, 4 people including taxes and port charges. I thought this was a great deal for a new ship. But, as others have warned about on this site, it is a non-refundable rate. At the same time, the deposit for ALL of us is only $350 vs the $1000 deposit HAL wanted to charge me. I'm thinking of finalizing the booking today. We paid $2500 for the 4 of us in an oceanview on the Rotterdam for the same week this year. Considering that's an older ship and we didn't have a balcony, I'm quite happy with the deal I'm seeing on the Nieuw Statendam. I guess this is a long-winded way of saying: does this seem like a good deal to you? How do you prefer to book your HAL cruises? I always book fares where I can get price adjustments, but in this situation, I'm not sure this will drop further (especially since we'll be sailing at a peak time). I should also add: it seems HAL has far fewer cabins that accommodate four people compared to other cruise lines. We booked the Rotterdam 7 months in advance and all verandah cabins that could accommodate 4 were already sold out. So, I don't want to make that mistake again... Thanks for your input!
  25. HAL has just announced on Facebook that Oprah is to be the Godmother of the Nieuw Statendam.
