  1. I will be flying to Fort Lauderdale Good Friday to board the Nieuw Statendam on Easter Sunday. Two weeks later the Nieuw Statendam will have her first visit to her home country and I will be on board. Sadly, that will be a bittersweet moment for me as I will both enjoy the moment but also the sadness of disembarking. Come along with me on this journey. It will be typical of my cruise reports and I’ll have menus and When and Where posted as well as likely additional photos on my companion blog: http://getawaysfrom21044.wordpress.com. While I do fly I don’t like it. Cunard’s next transatlantic is some time after my arrival in Amsterdam so I’ll be extending my time with them for a few days before returning home. I have 2 days in Amsterdam and another 2 in Kiel before boarding Queen Victoria for a short 3-day cruise to Southampton (port:Skagen). Next is a 5-day getaway on QM2 (2nd call to Zebrugge plus St. Peter Port) before my transatlantic starts (May 17-24). When on a multi-line itinerary I tend to report the entire journey on a neutral forum but this time that will be on the Cunard forum as the Nieuw Statendam will be a sister to Cunard’s newest vessel. That thread is: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2655034-qvqm2-kiel-to-new-york-with-a-holland-america-prelude/ Luggage Forward already has one of my bags at their Florida office. Roy
  2. We just booked a last minute trip on NS for this weekend. (My first on HAL!) Despite having a balcony (another first!) I'd like to be on deck for sailaway and watch the Dutch countryside slip away before we head out to sea, and then enjoy the fjords later in the week. I can't tell from looking at the deck plans. Are there any front-facing decks? Do they open the bow? There's always the gym, I suppose. Share your secrets.
  3. We are sailing Oct 29 and have veranda cabin 6114 which is by the elevator. Has anyone had a problem with traffic on this area?
  4. New Ship! Few threads and/or reviews! (1) HAL deckplans studiously avoid calling the Crows Nest, the Crows Nest. (It is the Exploration Cafe and the EXC.) Surely they know we will not be dissuaded so easily? It will take a generation to lose the name just like the Captain's Corner! We were on the Zuiderdam this spring, the Crows Nest bar and the Exploration Cafe had merged, which was fine with us as we could segue right from Lattes to Pain Killers! However, the pics on CruiseDeckPlans appear to show only an espresso bar and not a BAR set up. Tell me it is not so, if we drink coffee as long as we want to be gazing at the ocean, we will be bouncing off the walls! (2) Third person in an obstructed balcony on Beethoven deck. For sure a sofa-bed and not a drop-down Pullman (they have different symbols). But what does this photo show??? 'Cuz it looks like it shows the bed being made by flipping the entire back of the sofa over to the floor! My mom had an acceptably comfortable bed on the Zaandam Verandah where the bed "emerged" by flipping the SEAT of the soft; it's hard to imagine the pictured sofa-bed being very comfortable! That's all I can think of now. More later!
  5. The Signature Sisters will be making their weekly visit to Juneau with Eurodam at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Seabourn Sojourn tendering from 0800-2000, Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215, and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. Monday is shaping up to be the nicest of the next 5 days with only a 10% chance of rain and partly cloudy skies. The high will be 73F/23C (the highest for the week) and the low 55F/13C. Sunrise is at 4:28 am and sunset at 9:39 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  6. Just returned form a 1-week Alaska cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam. As always, we enjoyed our cruise very much. The Alaska cruise was our 3rd time on the Nieuw Amsterdam (all Alaska cruises). The one thing that did bother me was the room smelled a little stuffy and the duvet had quite a few stains on it when I look at the bedding. Does anyone know if HAL will be modernizing the bedding some time in the near future?
  7. Hi all! We're going on a cruise to Norway on the Nieuw Statendam in late July. I love to get up early and swim before heading off for the day. Can anyone who has been on the NS or is on it now tell me when they open the Lido and Seaview pools in the morning? thank you!
  8. Our very first cruise was to Alaska in 2014 on the Westerdam. This was our 3rd trip to Alaska and we went back to Holland. It was amazing! I think the passengers can make the cruise fun and we had some really great fellow cruisers. Ages from 20s - 70s but all young at heart and ready for fun. Boarding: was easy. got to the port by 11AM and on board by noon. Room: 7079 Signature Suite. Perfect size and balcony had lots of room with two loungers and table. It was pretty warm the entire trip so we used the balcony a lot. Entertainment: BB King was fantastic. This group had been together for the last 5 months and this was their last week and then a new group was coming. They really got the crowd going and dancing. They do three sessions each night 8:30/ 9:30 and 10:30 with a 15 minute break in between. We got their early for the first show to get a seat and never left. The string quartet was fabulous as well. They were from Russia and really sounded like a recording. Just beautiful We went to one variety show and a dancer was injured due to the rocking of the ship. They ended up cancelling the second show. Two nights were pretty rocky during the week. Spa: I got the salt water spa package with the heated spa lounger. It is $136 on line, but I waited too long and couldn't book before I left. When I went to sign up, they wanted to charge me $215, then after i protested $169 but finally got them to $136. I felt the workers at the spa were a bit snooty and not very helpful. There is also no water available to drink. So be sure to bring your own. Really loved the salt water after a day of touring. Excursions: We did the Tracy Inlet cruise and it was amazing. Rained most of the time, but the views were spectacular. We saw a "herd"? of sea lions and their babies splashing in the water. Must have been about 50 of them. a lot of harbor seals and one whale. Afterwards we we took the tram up Mt. Roberts and had dinner. Food was OK. Views were spectacular. The train/bus tour in Skagway. I messed up and had the bus portion first and then the train coming back. I would do the RT train if I had to do it over. The train has nicer views IMO and much more comfortable than the bus. There is also supposed to be a club car with big plush chairs. I'd look into that option. Ketchikan: We did the Ketchikan Taxi cab tour with Tim White. Went to herring cove which is beautiful and to Potach park to see the Totems. Also went to the Rotary park. Saw lots of eagles. Didn't see any bears this time. Then went to a Jazz club in town. Good times Food: We ate in the main dining room the first night. Then Rudy's on Thursday night. This is the one night special chef deal. It was incredible! The remainder we ate in the buffet. Had the pizza and brought to our balcony. Also had the burger at the Dive In. They were very good as were the french fries. Casino: My husband played the slots. (his addiction) and won $910.00. So I'd say the slots are fairly loose. disembarking: We had an early flight so we did the self walk off. It was easy. Lines were long at customs as there were 4 ships in port. But moved fairly quickly. LOVED this cruise Dawn
  9. We were on NA in April of 2017, and the casino was non-smoking after renovations to the piano bar area across the way... I had assumed it would remain non-smoking, but the HAL website - supposedly updated to June 2019 - does NOT list Nieuw Amsterdam as one of the completely non-smoking casinos. Can someone who has sailed recently tell me whether HAL has reverted to smoking in the NA casino? Our booking depends on the answer... Many thanks!
  10. Hello, Does HAL usually have any kind of Halloween night party or event on Nieuw Amsterdam? We will be sailing on 10/31/19 and am wondering if we should bring even the simplest of costumes to make it more festive. Thanks!
  11. Planning a 14 night to Caribbean in November on either of these ships - similar prices - suggestions one over the other?
  12. I am considering a solo cruise on Nieuw Statendam. It will have to be an inside cabin due to budget constraints. Any suggestions as to more spacious inside cabins or cabins to avoid?
  13. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215 and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. Weather is back to normal in Juneau - rain is predicted for each day this week - there is even a flood warning for part of Monday. The high temperature will be 65F/18C and the low 54F/12C. Sunrise is at 4:15 am and sunset at 9:51 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  14. Has anyone played pickle ball on the Nieuw Statendam? Do they provide the paddles & balls? Has their been a good response to the games?
  15. A full house in Juneau with five cruise ships on Monday. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Seabourn Sojourn tendering from 0700-2300, Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215, and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. The first half of the week has nice weather forecast (the end of the week is looking rainy). Monday is supposed to be partly cloudy with a high of 78F/26C and a low of 58F/14C. Sunrise is at 4:05 am and sunset at 10:00 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  16. Earlier today I decided to see if I could find a more recent picture to see what Our beloved Nieuw Amsterdam III looks like as she is being scrapped. Se was our firs HAL ship back in December, 1988. We were on board for her 12 day Christmas Cruise when we did the partial canal transit on Christmas day with the Rotterdam V. We have been at sea for the Holidays every year ever since. I am actually currently working on digitizing the pictures from that cruise by using a negative scanner to scan the negatives and then some photo editing software to clean them up as much as I can. Yes I still have the negatives for the cruises we have done till going digital in 2004. When I found this picture I was speechless and thought about all the memories from the time we cruised on her. Till this day we have more days on her than any of the other Dam Ships we have been on at a total of 107 days (9 cruises) but our days on Nieuw Amsterdam IV are #2 (96 days & 13 cruises) so the next time we can get on her will hopefully be enough to take over the top spot for us.
  17. After reading so many threads, I've now lost the thread where it discussed the hidden spots (gems) on Nieuw Amsterdam to lounge outside and inside as well as hidden gems of treats. For example, I remember reading a post about emergency exit doors that are not really emergency exit doors and take you to a quieter outdoor deck area. Or one that stated how to get to the Crows Nest. Also, any other hidden gems like the Tea Time (that too looked fun). Thanks!
  18. looking at booking oceanview stateroom on Deck 1 in area of #1116 ...soon!...on the NS and would appreciate any comments as to location pros & cons? preferably from those that have been on her.? thanks all!
  19. Cruising next month on our 5th HAL cruise, 14 days B2B Caribbean. Question for those who have already been on the new ship since christening last month. What is the status of the electrical outlets beside the bed? Are there USB ports bedside for phone/tablet charging? I have a new CPAP that will require a plug in reasonable proximity to the bed. Do I need to bring an extension cord or are there close outlets that will suffice? Any input will be much appreciated. Thanks.
  20. So confused on Holland America's inside cabin differences. Cannot find anywhere what the actually cabin size is, most sites say so and so sq ft up to 225 sq ft for an inside. I did read there are certain inside cabins that have a convertible sofa bed available. Does anyone know which ones or a good site to figure out the size of the rooms?
  21. A busy start for the month of July with five ships in port. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Viking Orion tendering from 0800-1630, Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215, and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. The nice weather continues and the prediction is that it will last through the week. The afternoon should be mostly sunny with a high of 76F/24C and a low of 55F/13C. Sunrise is at 3:57 am and sunset at 10:06 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  22. Has anyone done Blend on Nieuw Statendam? Did you enjoy it? Is it worth the extra cost?
  23. Can anyone help out with a pictures or describtion of this particular cabin- as far as I know it is a different layout then other balcony cabins. Thanks so much!
  24. I think the answer is no but I want to make sure. Looking to book a spa cabin but thinking it is not worth the extra price if it does not include spa pass. Other spa cabins on other lines we have booked do include spa pass but I am having a hard time figuring it out on Holland.
