  2. Hi, we’re sailing next month to AK. Does anyone who has sailed on NA have thoughts or tips to share on their yoga and fitness classes, paid and/or free? Would you recommend or skip next time? Thank you.
  3. Took the red eye from Los Angeles to FLL. No sleep for 30+hours and hung out at FLL till boarded. Take a taxi for the 2 mile $15 ride to the terminal. Hint, have your photo ID handy at the terminal gate even if you are in a cab! the line up is at 10:15 bit they didn’t let us in to check in till 11:00. Was on the boat at noon. This ship hip has the best cruise ship bathroom ever! The solid glass door is so much cleaner and better than a vinyl curtain. It’s the worlds best shower because no matter how long you run the hot shower with the door closes the mirror does not fog up!!! the ship is a beauty and I live the music theme which includes names of decks,!music venues and artwork. The artwork and feel is fun and more like the Celebrity Reflection or a very toned down Carnival. The internet works and price $139 unlimited is fair. You can also use the same account in multiple devices just not at the same time. The menu looks improved over what I had on a Holland cruise two years ago. The grand cafe is a waste and is all pay extra. The pizza was amazing. The flourless chocolate cake flawless. The free ice cream in the Lido buffet is not made in board. Only the extra pay gelato is made here. The free waffle cone was delicious. The only complaint I have is the service in the main dining room tonight was very slow. I went 5:15 not busy when arrived but all courses were very slow. If that happens again I’ll need to say something. The new spa has a deal if $199 for one or $200 for two persons and up to 25 passes are sold for their spa sauna facilities. I was tempted bit passes. Maybe next time. Hopefully the poor MDR service was a one time event. But I really like this ship so far.
  4. Fellow cruisers, I booked a cruise on the Nieuw Statendam (NS) in December. My new girlfriend and I are in our early 50s. This is her first cruise, my sixth. When I booked the trip, I reasoned the NS is a new ship and assumed it must be an improvement over other Holland America ships. I like Holland America for being classy but not arrogant, offering a calmer, quieter experience. My last cruise on the somewhat smaller Nieuw Amsterdam (NA) was very good. The atmosphere on the NA was subdued and I felt the ship needed a slight "party buzz" (just a little, nothing Carnival like) and also felt what the ship offered in entertainment was just enough. The NA's elegance and other elements of the cruise made up for that slight gap in entertainment. Overall, I love the NA and would cruise again in an instant! However, since I made the booking on the NS, I read reviews that were not quite as praising of the ship. In particular, passengers said entertainment was lacking, and some said it was less than that on the NA. The following four criticisms from experienced cruisers caught my eye: - One said Holland America did away with Broadway-like shows, and whatever they replaced them with was sub-par: not enough and not quite entertaining. - Another wrote there were not enough music venues. The two main venues -- the BB King and the Rolling Stones -- were crowded since many passengers would tend to congregate there, thus lessening the experience. - A third complained about the music played in the back of the ship, or anywhere else for that matter, as not being lively. - A fourth complained the NS felt too "plain" (I guess he meant lacking in elegance) and worse, there was practically nothing to do on ship. This is a long way of saying I am concerned. I want to give the NS a fair chance, but must admit the reviews have made me nervous. I suppose I can enjoy a beautiful ship even if there is nothing to do on it, but I am coming with a new girlfriend and hope for at least some "buzz." Can anyone please share their experiences with respect to entertainment on the NS? Thanks in advance.
  5. Hi Fellow Cruisers, We have never sailed Holland America but are looking at a December Caribbean cruise. Can anyone experienced with HAL tell me if there is any dancing on this ship? We are in our 70's so ballroom type music would be great but really we will try to dance to anything. Also at this late date I am guessing the early seating will be full. Any chance we could get early seating once on board. We always book far in advance so a last minute cruise is new to us. Any insider tips from seasoned HAL cruisers will be appreciated. Thanks, Minnie

She Is the only ship in port. I cannot get the San Diego webcam anymore. When you click on the link (sundiegolive.com) it sends you to a slightly altered address (http://ww1.sundiegolive.com/) which appears to have no relation to San Diego and has strange ads. Has this been discussed previously? Here is another webcam I found but not sure if it covers the area we are interested in but it does have a nice clear picture and does not jump from place to place like the other one - https://www.skylinewebcams.com/en/webcam/united-states/california/san-diego/san-diego.html For the Addicts: Rotterdam in Key West from 1100-1800 on April 1 (https://www.keywestharborwebcam.com/) Volendam will be in San Diego departing at 1700 on April 3 Zuiderdam will be in Aruba from 1300-2300 on April 3 (https://www.portarubawebcam.com/) Next up: As the Port Everglades season winds down, we will not have another sail-away until Saturday, April 6.
  8. Anyone sailing on the Nieuw Statendam November 17, 2019. My wife and I will be sailing with my Daughter and Son in Law. Would like to connect with any others folks that will be traveling on the Nieuw Statendam

Maasdam will be tendering from 1400-2300. Also in port are Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215 and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  10. Last night (Monday, April eighth) was the first gala night on a seven-day Western Caribbean on the new ship. We don’t often go to big theater’s shows any more for various reasons, but I wanted to see what the World Stage looked like in action. Good decision, because it was definitely one of the best shows I’ve ever seen on a ship (out of about 40 cruises). I wasn’t the only one - a long, standing ovation last night - and this morning’s Cruise Director Coffee Chat with the six performers saw a big, enthusiastic crowd. Even the coffee chat actually had a standing ovation, and comments from numerous people during the audience Q&A echoed my reaction. The show was called “Humanity.” The music was a mix of familiar and modern music (but never deafening, blaring, or annoying), and the room-surrounding projected lighting effects were truly impressive. For example, in one set, the dancers wore panters’ overalls and had paint cans - somehow, they “painted” colorful splashes on the floor, their clothes, and in sweeping arcs across entire walls of the stage. All done with lighting effects. In another set, they got into and out of a “glass elevator” made of lights, which went up or down because the “city” moved behind them, and in another they had umbrellas in a rainstorm with water and puddles underfoot. Hard to describe all the effects and how the performers interacted with the lighting backdrops, but really cool to watch. The show also had solo numbers which showcased their very strong skills as dancers. (They do not sing in the shows, but there is some recorded vocal music.) It was a great showcase for the World Stage capabilities. I think this group is still on N. Statendam next week, and they are eventually going to the K-dam.
  11. Hi. Does anyone have any comments or pictures of the oversized balconies towards the aft on deck 4? VBs I think Please and thank you.
  12. Currently on board. Lots of folks have given reviews of ship. She is nice and new! I will focus on ports of call. 1) Half Moon Cay - very nice. Easy tendering - no wait. We were the only ship there. :-) 2) Ocho Rios - ugly industrial port. 10 min walk to shops: restaurants. Be prepared to be bombarded by locals trying to get you to take tours. Most start by trying to shake your hand ( I don’t shake ANYONE’s hand-fist pump for me). They are offended if you refuse and call you racist. Then they start yelling at you. There is nothing within the industrial port so don’t bother to get off ship. Tomorrow is Cayman Islands. I will report back.
  13. My husband has a severe peanut/shellfish allergy, about which we have already alerted the ship and will follow up once onboard. We are very careful about what he eats when we eat breakfast/lunch and normally we restrict ourselves to set dining in the MDR when we cruise to ensure there are no problems. I am wondering how this issue would be addressed should we want to try the Pinnacle or the Tamarind restaurant. We will be celebrating our anniversary on this cruise and I thought a special dinner would be nice.
  14. No photos on Halfacts - looking at fully accessible V5055, 5057, or 5052, 5054 Has anyone any information on these? Thx 😊
  15. All, My parents have decided that (based upon much of the feedback I got here) they will be on the Nieuw Amsterdam for a Caribbean cruise! Very excited for them... However, I'm not familiar with the ship and wanted some recommendations on VF/VE cabins. I believe VF cabins have the metal (non-see through) balconies, whereas VE has plexiglass (see-through)... Is that correct? I'm thinking they'll be happy on deck 7 with a VE cabin (cabins above and below, so not too much noise). I was thinking cabin 7017 or 7107 (yes, I did have to double-check those since they are so similar in number)... can anyone provide feedback / insight? Thank you (again) in advance!
  16. Hi- my wife and I enjoy our balcony when we cruise & use it for breakfast, drinks & relaxing. We are looking at a cruise on the N. Statendam and looking at the deck plans the largest balconies are on deck 4 and there are angled balconies on the bump out parts. Any thoughts on the better cabins/balconies including the aft ones. Am also considering a Vista Duite but not sure if they are worth the extra cost. Thanks - Chris
  17. can anyone tell me if there is any self-serve laundry facilities on the Statendam? also, are irons readily available? thanks.
  18. As many of you know I recently completed a one week voyage on the NIEUW STATENDAM and I thought you would want a few observations.. I will be brief. I hate to say it but this is the new mid size. That was made clear to me when we were in Cozumel and docked next to The Harmony of the Seas. The Nieuw Statendam looked like a tug boat next to this monster ship. That being said, I still prefer the Signature Class Ships. My friar is they will get bigger and bigger.in the future. One thing I do not like is the promenade walk around deck. It is too narrow . It was good that they moved the Lincoln Center performers to the Queens lounge. However since they now share the space with the BB Kings Blues Venue, the classical music does not go that late. &:30 they are furnished. This ship and the Koningsdam cannot go through the New Locks in the Panama Canal. It has to do with the fact that lifeboats are out way to far. I understand that the next ship they will be relocated closer to the ship and hopefully more like they are on the other classes of ships. Maybe we will even get a decent size Promenade Deck in the next one. I had a nice room on the Navigation Deck (8059) midway between the Forward and Mid ship elevators. The problem was it was right below the Lido pull area and I could heart them dragging tables and chars late at night as I was trying to go to sleep. I liked this ship better that the Koningsdam but I still favor the Vista and Signature Class ships. I miss those Sea View Elevators at the mid ship. I also notice that there are not as many offerings at Dinner as HAL used to offer. For instance, we used to get three soups offered each evening: A broth soup, a cream soup and a cold soup. Not there is one but I think you can still get French Onion. It also seemed that there are fewer options on the minu but you can purchase a President Cut Steak for another &%.00. Baked Alaska is gone from the minuet on the last night of the cruise. The have a Chocolate offering on the last Gala night but with Diabetes, I took a rain check. These are my observations. I will be Chaplain on b2b Cruises on the Nieuw Amsterdam in June. It will be nice to get back on a Signature Ship. If you to the time to read these thoughts and observations, thanks for reading them . They are subjective. They were written in that spirit.
  19. I have searched all over for MDR menus. Anyone know where to find them?
  20. Looking to book on the Nieuw Statendam for January but not sure about going for the Aft Vista Suite, the SY at the way front of the ship, or an SS on the bump-out middle. I know these are three different "animals" with different prices. But looking for your opinions and experience(s) in any or all. Also, anyone been in the Cat. SY at the front of the ship? Trying to figure out the balcony, and if strangers can walk past the bow window, as I see on the deck plan there is outdoor space that appears to wrap around the entire bow on Deck 5. Thanks!
  21. I know this is a very new ship but has anyone stayed in cabin 6169 or has any information on it? In the HAL website it looks to be a little larger (longer room) with an angled balcony. Thanks in advance for any info.
  22. We heard many of the married couple’s wonderful themed sets in January, and wonder if they will still be performing when we take another cruise in June.
  23. Looking at booking an aft Vista Suite on Nieuw Statendam for January. It is currently 1/2 the price of the Cat. SS! Any recommendations on which aft cabin? All on Deck 7 are available, and according to the deck plan, the middle cabin looks skinnier than the two at the side next to the Cat. SB wraparounds. Is the deck plan correct? Thanks for any info on these aft Vistas!!!
  24. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215 and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. There is a 50% chance of rain with the forecast for occasional showers. High will be 58F/14C and the low 47F/8C. Sunrise is at 3:59 am and sunset at 9:54 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  25. We're going to be on NS April 7-14. Just wondering if past passengers might offer any food or dining tips - you know - "be sure to try this" or "go here". ....menu hidden gems...anything that really caught your taste buds or whatever...🤗 Don't want to miss anything good! FYI - just talking about within the "included" dining options here, not interested in the extra-charge or specialty dining. Anyone care to share?
