  1. Who is going to be the dining room manager on the Nieuw Statendam.
  2. Hello John ( Copper10-8 ) , I have a different kind of question that I have been toying with for a little bit . I believe the current Captain on the Volendam Capt Chris Turner is on his last stint as a Holland America Captain and is going into his retirement , the date I have heard from himself was January 2019 but that was about a year ago . Could you tell me if it is possible to send him our Best Wishes in his retirement . We have cruised with him on 4 different ships in very different regions and had some nice chats with him and a couple of very special Captains Dinners ! What do you think would be the best way to reach him , we will be on the Premier Cruise of the Nieuw Statendam next week and were wondering if we could drop a card at the front office or send it to Seattle . Any suggestions ? Thank you very much in advance . Always appreciate the wealth of information that you are able and willing to provide us with . Tony , "Sailing Dutchy "
  3. I will be checking on the Nieuw Statendam next week, too! I hope to be able to stay in touch... I seem to remember it was something like $25 off the price of the full-cruise package (but that was some time ago, on Westerdam, I think).
  4. My documents for my Nieuw Statendam cruises show a 5:00 P. M. departure. Honestly, I am pleased to see this. That gives me the opportunity, depending upon my luggage delivery time, to get unpacked and enjoy the sailaway without knowing that I still have that "task" to do before I begin my evening activities.
  5. When is the Nieuw Statendam expected? I guess that the Fort Lauderdale cam is having issues....
  6. Morning Father; K-dam will be getting standard maintenance, EXC in the Crow's Nest and the Rolling Stone Rock Room implemented starting on 02 Dec 2018 in Freeport. Here's a pic off Capt. Albert's blog that shows the Rolling Stone Rock Room on Nieuw Statendam (still wrapped in bubbles in certain places) as well as some pics of Westerdam's EXC in her Crow's Nest
  7. Captain Albert made mention of the christening in his blog for Nov. 23. "This morning the yard was testing the bottle throwing device. " https://www.hollandamerica.com/blog/excluderecent/23-november-2018-nieuw-statendam-building-7-days-to-go/comment-page-1/#comment-225255
  8. Lots of ships today, should be a fun sail away parade! Thanks, Kathi, for organizing! We got our stateroom assignment yesterday for the Nieuw Statendam, Dec.5. We had booked the cheapest inside guarantee, and were assigned a VB verandah - I'm not sure if that should be telling me something about how (un)popular the premier cruise of a new ship will be! Anyway, we are looking forward to it.
  9. 3/17/19 NIEUW STATENDAM 7-Day Eastern Caribbean Celebrating our anniversary 2nd Holland Cruise
  10. This afternoon, I printed my Express Documents for my Nieuw Statendam cruises in January. The color strip on the luggage tags was Orange!
  11. Can anyone comment on the balcony view from the cabins located where the HAL Nieuw Statendam ship changes width. Such as V6130 and V6113?
  12. When we were just on the Maasdam a few weeks back, there was lots of Orange for sale in the shops. I purchased an Orange HAL shirt on the Volendam last year and will have it for the inaugural Nieuw Statendam voyage. I suspect the NS will have lots of Orange for sale on board.
  13. I made it back just in time to see the King sail past and away. Missed the Edge. I have 86 emails to catch up on... Copper, I wonder if you can tell - who will the CD be on the Nieuw Statendam in December?
  14. Hi all, In the thread linked above it was suggested I post here in this forum. I will be aboard the Nieuw Statendam in February 2019. I had a return flight home booked with Sunwing from FLL, and this week they called to notify me that they will now be departing from MIA instead. Flight departs at noon. My HAL cruise gets into the Ft Lauderdale port at 7am. I noticed when I login to HAL’s site, I can book “post-cruise transfers” right from HAL. One I found was called “TRANSFER FT LAUDERDALE SHIP/MIA AIR” and it seems very reasonable at $19pp. My concern with this is, I see no details about where I would find this transfer, what time it would leave the cruise terminal and when it would arrive at MIA... can I safely assume it would be a shuttle running throughout the day? Has anyone used one of these HAL transfers, and if so were they quick and reliablle? Can anyone confirm what time they depart FLL and arrive at MIA? I contacted Larry’s as suggested in the other thread, but the cost quoted was $105 USD which is out of my budget. I know the cheapest option is the tri-rail but I’m worried about the timing for that option.
  15. Appreciate that Chinook Wind asked this question! We are in the same boat as she is (so to speak) sailing the Nieuw Statendam next month as our first HAL cruise, but loving the escargot that Celeb offers in their MDR daily. Can't wait to try the snails on HAL!
  16. We were on this cruise and after 300 days of sailing with Holland America. LOVED THE KONINGSDAM. Why! It was like cruising on a different cruise line. We really enjoyed all the new venues whether dining or entertainment. We were not big on the contemporary art but as recommended by a ship’s officer we walked from top floor down and some of the art was pretty unique. First thing we noticed was narrower hallways on Shurbert Deck cabin floors and questioned how a cruiser on a scooter would be able to get past with the Stewards utility carts in the hallways. We just had a grand time. MDR food was as we expected after 24 Hal Cruises. Our servers were excellent and our dining times were around a hour to and hour and fifteen minutes. Really enjoyed new dining venues such as Culinary ( no longer after dry dock), Sol De Mer, Dutch Cafe,Tamarind, Pinnacle Grille, New York Deli for pizza and breakfast. Dive Hamburger and other offering were outstanding. Sommelier Dinners were special. All the entertainment venues exceeded our expectations. Lincoln Center players. Wow! Exceptational musicians, BB King great, Dueling Pianos In Billboard filled up every night. We loved the bar; Notes and the single malt scotch tastings. We experienced a movie at the big screen in Lido Pool and watched Mama Mia and were impressed how the crew provided pillowing for head and neck and lumbar pillows. Fun time. We had excellent and popular guest lecturer’s that filled up the World Stage quickly. Arrive early. All in all we experienced a great cruise and all the new venues made us feel like we were on a new cruise line. Though we also love the other smaller class Hal ships we feel Hal is headed in the right direction for our future cruise experiences. Looking forward to our Nieuw Statendam cruise in 2020 but have some great Dam cruises booked before. Prisendam, Maasdam and Rotterdam here we come!😁
  17. I was searching for the roll call for my cruise next year on Nieuw Statendam (Nov 10/19) is it odd that there are roll calls for all her voyages but not one single one for the month of Nov? Or just a coincidence that not a single person has started one for that month 🤔 Thoughts?
  18. Hello! I'm currently planning a family cruise for New Years week - with travelers ranging from 25 yrs - 90 yrs. Before I ask for advice - here's a bit about us! We have previously gone on two cruises, one on the Norwegian Sun traveling to Alaska, and one on the Holland America Westerdam traveling on the west coast/Mexico. We enjoyed Holland America much better than NCL - we felt that NCL lacked quality in both food and entertainment, and upcharged for everything once we were on the ship. Holland America we enjoyed a lot - we felt the food was great, the entertainment was pretty good, but when researching for the next voyage, I've read that Holland America seems 'old' and lacks activities. Here are the cruises we're currently considering: 1. Holland America Nieuw Statendam 7 day Western Caribbean Holiday 2. Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas Western Caribbean Holiday Cruise 3. Celebrity Equinox Western Caribbean Holiday Cruise 4. Celebrity Reflection Western Caribbean Holiday Cruise Once again, my concern with Holland America is that it seems like the reviews paint this line as a ship for old people with a lack of things to do - but knowing this is a new ship I'm hopeful that it'll be fresh and exciting! I've heard great things about Royal Caribbean in general, but friends have warned that ships this big may have a lot of long lines, limited areas to relax (fight to get lounge chairs, no where to sit at the buffet, etc). I'm also concerned that this ship will have a lot to do for the younger members of the family, but the older members will not enjoy it. Also, I've read that Royal Caribbean upsells more than the others on this list. And then Celebrity- I've read great things about the quality of this line but from my research it seems pretty similar to Holland America, with potentially limited things to do on ship aside from eating and fitness classes. I'd love to hear some of your thoughts! I'm sure any of these would make for a great trip, but any advice or experiences you can share would be greatly appreciated! Thanks 🙂
  19. It is still on the home page (Euro version!) Rolling Stone Rock Room Coming December 2018, to Nieuw Statendam and Koningsdam, enjoy four decades of classic rock on the stage in the Rolling Stone Rock Room nightly.
  20. Their interior is lovely. But, in a rather modern way. The art being placed on the Nieuw Statendam that Captain Albert is showing us reminds me of the decor I experienced on Celebrity Eclipse.
  21. Thank you for your review. We've been on the Koningsdam twice now, and really enjoy her. We've done inside and OV and loved them both. We're doing the Nieuw Statendam (balcony) next October, and are looking forward to that one, too. We did NCL between the two cruises (and will do another NCL next month), and there is no comparison. I look at your bad, and think that maybe you had a bad tv placement. I never noticed that on either of our trips, so thinking that might be a one off? I walked the ship specifically looking for the art. I found it lovely, modern, and musical, but art is a taste thing, right? I know that people continue to be disappointed with the promenade deck, but hubby and I enjoy our walks out there in the evening-very quiet and serene. As to the ugly, I know that the toilets are/have been an issue since day one, although we never had issue. I guess we got used to them. Thanks again for your review! It's good to hear how others feel.
  22. Port info still says 08:00 AM. That's too early for me to get there from the other coast of FL and find a good spot for viewing. I am disappointed, but will definitely be online and watching the port cam. Looks like the first time I will see her in person will be on December 23rd, when I return from my 4-day on HAL's Nieuw Statendam, her first voyage out of PE. Unless I can find a bargain for earlier in December.
  23. Thanks for your review. Hope you enjoyed the cruise, even with those drawbacks. We did like Koningsdam, and I think some changes are due to be made when she goes into drydock, such as losing the CAC to Club Orange. We will be on the premier voyage of the Nieuw Statendam in December, and hope we enjoy her as much as we did Koningsdam. We have found that the first offering of the show in the evenings is always chock-a-block full. We much prefer going to the later show, if we go at all.
  24. We did not try the reservations for dining, we did open seating and got seated right away every time. Were very impressed. Also we were impressed with the size of the main course portions on the first three evenings that we ate in the Lido for a few dinners to slow down, but went back to the MDR for the dining experience. It was very good. The breakfast in the MDR was great also. I cannot comment on the toilets to be on the Nieuw Statendam. just to say that the position of them on the Kongingdam didn't bother us.
  25. Sorry, no reservations I understand that has been corrected on the Nieuw Statendam. I wonder if they'll ever do something about it on the K.
