  1. I receive 3-4 casino offers per year and they range from free insides (we book Neptune Suites with these offers as the rates are greatly discounted) with casino Fun Play to VIP Casino cruises with more casino Fun Play, free drinks for me and spouse while in the casino, gifts, and welcome aboard parties. Deposits are non-refundable and bookings are for Guarantees only. I only play slots and DH only plays table games and I am the one who receives the offers. We take the offers several times a year - Oosterdam this past Feb. and the Nieuw Statendam this upcoming Dec.
  2. Received one for a VIP Casino cruise in late April or early May and took it - going on the Nieuw Statendam in Dec. Before that, received one for free inside with casino Fun Play and we booked a Neptune Suite on the Oosterdam for last Feb. Unfortunately, both were Guarantees which we don't like to do, but no choice in order to receive the discounted fares and casino cash. I usually receive 3 or 4 per year. Used to not have to book Guarantees with these offers, but now you do and the deposits are non-refundable.
  3. Thank you for the fleet report. Waiting for the Nieuw Amsterdam to arrive in Key West.
  4. Need to know the "class" of ship (what general age when she was built). In 2014, on the Zaandam (which is an R-class), my mom shared a Verandah or Vista Suite (no suite privileges, just a name) with my DH and me and there was LOTS of room -- each of us had a 'bank' of drawers to selves and lots of room in closets. The sofa bed flipped lengthwise to a twin-size, so no bars across the middle of the sleeper's back. Mom said it was very comfy. The stewards made it back into a sofa each morning while we were at breakfast, so we could socialize around the table, and back to a bed while we were at dinner and show. It was a GREAT cabin for three. Some of the newer ships may be smaller in dimensions, but we are still going to share again in a std balcony on the Nieuw Statendam in 2021. It looks like the space will be tighter, without all the drawers, but in the meantime DH and I have gotten very good at packing small, AND I have acquired fold-flat boxes to use as "drawers" on open shelves (within the closets).
  5. Sailing on July 14th? If so, hello cruisemate! There ought to be a sailaway party on the aft Lido Deck as we sail under the Lion's Gate Bridge. Be there! The Westerdam has been in drydock since I last sailed on her, so I can't say what may/may not have physically changed. I would recommend any specialty restaurant reservations that you want to make be made upon embarkation. The Sel-de-Mar pop-up ought to be offered one night in the Pinnacle Grill. Sel-de-Mar's cuisine, service, ambiance on the Nieuw Statendam this January provided my best dining experience on that ship. Making a reservation for this pop-up opportunity is a priority once I embark. The Westerdam is a beautiful ship. I hope you will enjoy your cruise on her.
  6. We'll be sailing to the Eastern Caribbean on the Nieuw Statendam Jan 12, 2020. We're celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary and my dh's 50th birthday. This will be our 2nd time on HAL 😄
  7. Konigsdam fall 2020 to Spring 2021 sailings have also been released - Mix of Mexico and Hawaii cruises from San Diego. Amsterdam strongly rumored to do a Fall 2020 Grand Africa and normal winter/spring 2021 World Cruise. Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Nieuw Statendam, Rotterdam, Veendam, Volendam, Zaandam and Zuiderdam also have bulk of deployments in place. This leaves Maasdam as the only ship in the fleet without rumored or confirmed sailings for the fall to spring 20/21 seasons, so either they are working at refining the EXC inDepth program for her, or they are determining her exit strategy.
  8. You never see Captain Edward van Zanne. No Captain; welcome toast and no "Ask the Captain" on the last day. He must be very shy. When does the "Pride of County Cork", Captain Neil O' Driscoll go back on the Nieuw Statendam?
  9. Hi Jacqui. thought id done this but obviously not, appreaciate if you can add: 17 nov niew statendam 7 day western caribean - trying new ship before main winter cruise 24 nov koningsdam - 10 day southern caribeen wayfarer - wifes birthday treat - again!!
  10. Does your crystal ball tell you what happened to the two "Signatures," Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam in 2028?
  11. On the Nieuw Statendam I played in the Crows Nest in the evenings. There were often people up there till the early hours of the morning doing jigsaws, reading, board games etc so I didn’t feel out of place. One Deck Dungeon is definitely my preferred choice ...
  12. MeandtheSea- I agree comletely - I also love the QM2- that ship still deserves the name ocean liner! At evey twist and turn one is connected with the sea..! Perfect! I am trying the new Nieuw Statendam in two weeks- can´t wait to see the changes- but i know before hand- i certainly will miss the prommendade deck..! The little walkway around the NS is a sorry excuse for a prommenade deck. Big misstake of HAL - IMO.
  13. My wife and I swore no more HAL cruises after the Zuiderdam in 2004 (Caribbean) & Oosterdam in 2007 (Alaska). Liked the size of the ships but the Main factors were the smoking on balconies, entertainment (the HAL Cats did not work for us) and at the time the age demographics (we were in our early 40’s). So, we cruised only on Princess and Celebrity , are at the Elite level on both lines and had great cruises in various parts of the world on their ships. In 2017 our family of about 20 went on the Westerdam over Christmas and have since been on the Nieuw Amsterdam in 2018 and sailing again on her Saturday. While we still sail on Princess ( not so much due to pricing on Celebrity) we like the HAL experience on the Vista and Signature Class ships but will not sail on the older, smaller ships. My wife and I really like the Signature Suites with a decent size covered balcony, are fans of BB King’s, love the service (room service breakfast the final day is wonderful) love the speciality restaurants, especially Taramind and the hydro pool in the spa. The unbelievable amount of whining I read on these boards at times has me wondering what all the fuss is about when I am on the ships. We are now in our late 50’s with over 40 cruises and generally cruise to relax and recharge especially to the Caribbean. My guess is you will like the Eurodam if you liked the Westerdam.
  14. I have never been on a themed cruise before but wondered what this Malt Shop Cruise was like—how does it differ from a regular trip? We were disembarking the Nieuw Amsterdam last week when this cruise was beginning. Lots of maneuvering on the Lido deck setting up what looked to be a stage and dance floor. Anyone ever done one of these cruises before? Just wondering...

  16. Hello...We did the Christmas cruise on the Nieuw Statendam last Christmas (2018) and did enjoy the experience immensely. The ship will be decorated for the Holiday quite nicely. Santa will visit the children on Christmas Morning with gifts, the crew and officers will do (or did) and Christmas Chorale at The World Stage on Christmas Eve followed by a Midnight Mass there. At the Tree lighting ceremony at the Lincoln Center Stage it snowed, paper of course but it looked like snow and served complimentary cocoa to go with the festivities and of course a performance by the Lincoln Center Stage musicians. The atrium had a interning two level high Christmas Tree made from wrapped Christmas boxes. The ship was totally decorated for the holiday and the Seaview (aft) had a large neon Santa. This was our first Christmas cruise and the ship still had that new smell. Yes, as some posters replied, there were a lot of children that you saw during the day but not in the evening. The children were well mannered. It was not intrusive in any way at all. We did join the Greenhouse Thermal Suite for the duration and were fine. We would book another Christmas cruise without hesitation.
  17. Noel O' Driscoll is a very delightful man from County Cork. When I am on the Nieuw Statendam in November I hope he is the Captain
  18. Maybe the best of my trans-Pacific cruises have been a re-positioning of Volendam on an Auckland-Sydney-Vancouver itinerary and the final HAL cruise of the Statendam from Seattle to Singapore. Each of those cruises were memorable and enjoyable in their own way.
  19. On all ships but the 2 newest (Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam) you will muster under the lifeboats. You do NOT take your life jacket. I am pretty sure all ships now have scanners at the life guard stations and they only call out cabin numbers of people who were not scanned. HAL drill is unusual in that it is 2 or 3 stages. What has been the first stage is the first alert for crew to start preparation. The next stage indicates a more serious emergency and you are directed to return to your cabin and get warm clothing, etc. At that stage the crew will be preparing for the drill, stowing the deck chairs and in a real emergency would be preparing the life boats. At the final stage you report to your muster station. I think on my last cruise the first stage was not mentioned directly and pax started with the second stage. Roy
  20. I just realized that I mistakenly said the Nieuw Amsterdam instead of the Nieuw Statendam. The NA was our February cruise. Duh! 🙄
  21. Hi, We would like to take a Norwegian fjord cruise around mid June of 2020. We have 4 choices: Carnival Legend (9 day from Dover, UK) and Rotterdam (7 day from Netherlands) are old and small ships; P&O Iona will be new ship and bigger ship will be sailing in 2020 (could be a plus or minus). - 7 day from Southampton. We are keen in photography, thus any route that more scenic than other will get our attention. Greatly appreciated your inputs to narrow down our choice. Below are the 4 ships with itinerary: Nieuw Statendam Day 1 · Amsterdam, Netherlands 5:00pm Day 2 · At Sea Day 3 · Eidfjord, Norway 8:00am - 5:00pm Day 4 · Bergen, Norway 7:00am - 4:00pm Day 5 · Geiranger, Norway 7:00am - 5:00pm Day 6 · Alesund, Norway 7:00am - 3:30pm Day 7 · At Sea Day 8 · Amsterdam, Netherlands Arrive 7:00am Rotterdam Day 1 · Rotterdam, Netherlands Depart 5:00pm Day 2 · At Sea Day 3 · Eidfjord, Norway 7:00am - 3:00pm Day 3 · Scenic Cruising Hardangerfjord Day 4 · Vik, Norway 8:00am - 5:00pm Day 4 · Cruise Sognefjord Day 5 · At Sea Day 6 · Haugesund, Norway 12:00pm - 11:00pm Day 7 · At Sea Day 8 · Rotterdam, Netherlands Arrive 7:00am Carnival Legend Day 1 · London/Dover, United Kingdom Depart 5:00pm Day 2 · Fun Day At Sea Day 3 · Bergen, Norway 8:00am - 5:00pm Day 4 · Hellesylt, Norway 10:00am - 1:00pm Day 4 · Geiranger, Norway 3:00pm - 10:00pm Day 4 · Cruise Geirangerfjord Day 5 · Molde, Norway 8:00am - 5:00pm Day 6 · Olden, Norway 10:00am - 7:00pm Day 6 · Nordfjord Day 7 · Alesund, Norway 7:00am - 4:00pm Day 8 · Stavanger, Norway 10:30am -7:30pm Day 9 · Fun Day At Sea Day 10 · London/Dover, United Kingdom P&O Iona 6:00pm Day 1 · Southhampton Day 2 · At Sea Day 3 · Stavanger, Norway 9:00am -5:00pm Day 4 · Olden, Norway 9:00am-6:00pm Innvikfjorden, Norway (Cruising) Nordfjord, Norway (Cruising) Day 5 · Hellesylt, Norway 6:30am -7:am Sunnylvsfjorden, Norway (Cruising) Geiranger, Norway 9:00 am - 5:00p Storfjorden, Norway (Cruising) Day 6 · Bergen, Norway 7:30am -2:30pm Day 7 · At Sea Day 8 · Southhampton 7:00am Thanks!
  22. We will be on our first Holland America cruise in Sept on Nieuw Statendam and very much looking forward to it. I have a couple of questions if I may: Is it easy enough to get decent reservations time wise i.e. 7.30 to 8.00 in the speciality restaurant's? Is there any real benefit in the dining package if we want to decide ourselves which restaurant's we want to eat in, rather than one in each dining area? Is there any music played out side of the main designated areas. I am thinking of a smaller lounge which I saw in a photo with a piano set up ? Scotslizzy
  23. Not according to my kids. Of all the cruise lines we’ve sailed on with them, they rank Carnival somewhere at the bottom. The only one they liked less was Holland America (needless to say, it’s not as family friendly as other cruise lines, plus we were in Alaska with not too many kids onboard). For the record, they did have fun on Carnival, they just think others are better. According to my kids, MSC is the absolute best (even I was amazed at the facilities on the Meraviglia and list of activities), followed by Royal, then Disney, then Carnival, and lastly Holland America. We are sailing on Holland again in 2020 aboard their newest ship (Niew Statendam) so let’s see if they change their ranking order after that. About Carnival, the kids had an overall fun time on the cruise, they loved Waterworks, and they participated on everything they could, including the Dr. Seuss activities. Heck, I even took them to Make it with Michael’s. But the Camp facilities were overrun with too many children, to the point that they had to use a conference room as overflow because they couldn’t fit all the kids in attendance. We’d go get the kids and they’d be sitting on the floor shoulder to shoulder with other kids in a packed room, watching a cartoon movie, with a “get me out of here” look. The staff was wonderful, but they were very obviously spread too thin, both space wise and personnel wise.
  24. I would do it -- and I am not a suite person! The reason? -- a guaranteed Verandah could be ANYWHERE! but none of the Sig.Suites are all the way forward or aft. (Except the two SQ's and I'm pretty sure they won't be giving away the Spa Suites.) The Nieuw Amsterdam rides smooth, but halving the hike to the far end of the ship is a benefit to us.
