  4. I normally wouldn't book a cabin anywhere near the theater, but this was a casino deal, and I had very little choice. Any insight is greatly appreciated. I thank you in advance.
  5. I got a notice from HAL around the end of July that my original July 4 cruise on the new Rotterdam was switched to a July 11 sailing on the Nieuw Statendam, due to the delay of the Rotterdam's construction. The notice said I would get a new confirmation code within 4-6 weeks. Today, I saw that I now have the new confirmation code (got no email notification from HAL) and the July 11 itinerary listed on my booking, but I could not find any June or July Norway cruises on HAL's website. I suspect that HAL is still sorting out the June and July 2021 Northern Europe sailings, but am having another person in my travel group contact our travel agent to see if that is the case or the sailings are now fully booked due to moving all these passengers around.

  7. Hi everyone! I am contemplating booking an aft facing veranda for an Eastern Caribbean in April. We sailed in one on the Eurodam to the Mexican Riviera in December of 2018. We loved everything about it with one exception. There was a strange vibration that wasn't constant. It would come and go. Is this typical of aft facing verandas, or was there maybe an issue with the ship? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! My other options are one of the angled balconies on either deck 4 (partially obstructed) or deck 8. Thanks in advance!! Chris
  8. Hmmmmmmm....... It could be poor wording on the invoice perhaps? I just did a dummy booking for the Nieuw Statendam on a sailing in February for a triple cabin and it shows the promo applied in POLAR (agent booking system) for all three guests, and the booking invoice also displays it. You may want to double check with your travel advisor or HAL (whomever you booked with) as the Have it all (HIA on invoices) is supposed to apply to all guests in the room. The only exclusion is the bonus internet for suites which is (1) 1 device package for the each of the first two guests on the booking (2 packages per cabin max). Everything else (drinks, grats and dining) should be for all guests in cabin.
  9. Early 30s here. I started out on the Fantasy class ships of Carnival (not my choice - it was a Deaf group cruise), and while it was a good starting point, it was not the right fit for me. Like Bramcruiser said, this is my sentiment as well. Give me a steamer chair, a wraparound Promenade deck, traditional dining and tea, and shuffleboard any time and I'm content. I go not only for the itinerary but the ship as well. I would love to see more "history" onboard - let's not wipe the 147 years of HAL for something "new" - find a way to marry the new and the old. For me, even as a 8 year old back then, I still would have chosen HAL for the same reasons I choose it today. I became interested in ocean liners at that age, and by 13, I wanted to design ships (sadly that did not come to fruition as I was swayed by naysayers saying that girls shouldn't be interested in ships...). A good friend of the family did encourage this and picked up those brochures from TAs (back then when they still had deck plans included in them) and I would pour over them until they were dog-eared. I also had the coffee table books of the classic ocean liners with THEIR deck plans and beautiful pictures of their public rooms. I followed the construction of the RMS Queen Mary 2 diligently (despite not YET SAILED ON HER - something I need to remedy). I dragged my friend around the RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach, and she did not understand why I was perfectly content to sit on the Promenade Deck (she would be a great fit for RCI type cruises, needing to "do-do" stuff). At one point when I was 14, I toyed with what HAL would have looked like had they kept their colors of the 1930s-1950s and sketched over a profile of the Disney Magic/Wonder (I forget which one I used as example) and colored in with a white/gray hull and green/yellow/white funnels and yellow lifeboats. (I chose those two as they still had the "ocean liner" profiles). The sketch turned out well. Which brings me to branding - is there a reason why HAL consistently switches up its branding and logo? The others have recognizable branding and funnel colors that haven't changed (much) over the years, and are still recognizable. HAL on the other hand - funnels colors change from yellow/green/white to orange to white to blue/white with the Halve Maen superimposed onto the Nieuw Amsterdam of 1938, and then the little ship disappears and it's just NA. What's up with that? If they keep this up, then it might become unrecognizable. Even Carnival has stuck to their colors (and whale tail) over the years... This only adds to their 'being lost and not finding a direction" feelings. I saw on a thread from a few years ago that P&O had a similar sentiment about the changing of colors ("If the Old Guard doesn't like it, they can move over to Cunard" was one line that stuck out). So I'm torn on this - marketing strategies needed to rebrand to keep the lines going, but at the same time... ahhh. So what do I want to see? More enrichment options that is active, not passive (ie not just sitting and watching). While I love the lectures/port talks, I found the music options a bit too much (partly because I am Deaf, and partly because it's a bit overdone). I would love to see a return of organized deck sports (shuffleboard is already a given, but what about deck quoits? Scavenger hunts? (I so wanted to join the children on that one...) Betting on horses. Keep the "On Deck for a Cause" (though I don't believe they do that on the Koningsdam and (Nieuw) Statendam (let's drop the Nieuw on that one, shall we?), do they? Since they don't have room on their Promenade Decks for this? Please correct if I'm wrong). More arts/crafts/hands-on activities on the ship. (Many aspects of the children's actives is something I would have enjoyed). Bring back the libraries, but keep some of the EXC (they can work together - modern libraries do, so why can't that carry over shipboard? They can work together hand in hand.) Would love to see more shows in the showroom - dance revues would be fun! (Or musicals similar to HMS Pinafore, Anything Goes, Sail Away, (and I hear a Moby Dick show is coming in the theater world...) Another thing is that I would have enjoyed is the different decor theme ship by ship. (But definitely not to the extreme level of Farcus - - one can be nautical and celebrate the seafaring history of HAL, and the four Vista class ships - and the Eurodam - could have done a regional theme that actually matches their names...) While I understand the "branding" entertainment, I would have liked to see a different variety on the ships - they don't need to be cookie-cutter versions of each other. I was so grateful to have sailed the Nieuw Amsterdam prior to her Dec 2017 refit (which eliminated the library, took down "Manhattan" from the dining room name, and rebranded with the music stuff). That one had a character to her, and still felt "unique" despite sharing the same structure and layout as her sister. My friend, who is also a 30s something commented that many ships she has sailed on, lacked the "character" and was just "a ship" - a means of transportation to get from Point A to B and back to A, but she commented that the NA had "character" and could very much feel the "soul" of the ship itself. I think the decor for that one worked well, as they worked together to recreate the NYC feel (and the nods to history, given the photos in the corridors and the mini-museum of prior ships named the NA on the bottom of the atrium). I want the ship to feel like an old friend. I do hope that they do have SOME ties to the older Rotterdams on the newbuild, like they did with the Nieuw Amsterdam. So that's my two cents. And yes, I would be willing to shell out a bit more to keep the quality level instead of cutting corners, and keep the itineraries as they say, "savor the journey". To me, the "journey" is as much the itinerary as the shipboard life. So let's not forget one in favor of the other.
  10. We booked our Nieuw Statendam cruise while on the Eurodam with the onboard FCC. The FCC suggested choosing the Nieuw Statendam cruise over a similar Konigsdam cruise. He was aware that enough changes were being made that he referred to the Nieuw Statendam as a Konigsdam Version 2.0. One of the reasons that the Promenade Deck narrows down at the stern is due to the larger kitchen supporting an additional restaurant and the Main Dining Room's additional passengers served. The engineers and designers have to work within given restraints. Adding additional deck to the Panorama Deck would add additional weight high in the superstructure that may affect stability. I would rather see different furniture in place of those huge couches located there. Passengers seem to stretch out on them in place of their intended use.My original thought on the huge screen was negative but I found it entertaining while having a gelato or desert in the evening. I agree that the current two ships do have shortcomings but that some are hopefully addressed with the new Rotterdam.

  12. I agree about the piano bar musicians. Two of my favorites on long Holland America transatlantic cruises were Stryker Piano Man and Barry Rocklin (Barry From Boston). Barry joined our Cruise Critic Roll Call and came to two parties we held for the RC group. Good guy. HAL now has a dueling piano bar room on the newer ships. I enjoyed the guys on the Nieuw Statendam last year, but missed the intimacy of the smaller venue. (Of course, when there was a good piano bar artist in a small ship, it was tough to get a seat as word spread. As HAL sells off the small ships now, those memorable piano bar experiences are fading away.)
  13. We are in our mid 40’s. Our last cruise was aboard Nieuw Statendam. We had an absolutely wonderful experience. I felt that this class of ship perfectly ties the HAL of the past with the HAL of the future, opening the door to a new generation of HAL cruisers like us. We appreciated the more traditional feel, while enjoying the more modern touches. In my humble opinion, the experience found on the Pinnacle class should be what HAL should aim for as they evolve. I took this cruise with some trepidation, thinking that we were a bit too young for Holland America, specially since we are a family with young children. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised, realizing that my fears had no foundation. HAL truly exceeded expectations. Our cruise aboard Nieuw Statendam was one of the best that our family has ever experienced.

  15. We have looked and looked for a GOOD photo of the FAMILY Cabana on the Nieuw Statendam. We have heard all the negatives about this cabana, but have seen no actual photos of it, just side views and partial views where you can make nothing out. If anyone has a good clear photo, we would appreciate it if you would post it here.

  17. Having cruised on the Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam for the last 3 trips I learned quickly to wander down to our muster station way earlier than the required time We watched the milling masses merge , looking for the crew person who enters your card number into the computer. It was always chaotic. Afterwards we rested our tushes (sp) for upwards of an hour before the elevators weren't jammed packed with humanity Any new muster drill which spreads out the turgid seething masses is advantageous to me PS... While mustering on the Noordam the drill was exasperated with having to stand tummy to butt in the blazing sun while 1 passenger was searched for, not showing up for their own personal reason I would hope if HAL adopts this procedure that the crew member with the card recording pad shows up at each muster station well in advance of the specified muster time (maybe 1 hour before). Any procedure to eliminate crowds or lines would be beneficial, plus the elevators wouldn't be over taxed afterwards!! Take care Bob

  19. I had noticed that Nieuw Statendam was 'Scheduled' for arrival into Port Everglades for 7.00 am (ET) on Monday 27th April and it is now 'Confirmed'! She will dock at pier 26 with orientation listed as 'Starboard Must' . (that is a bit unusual?). She is scheduled to sail at 5.00pm ET. Also 'Scheduled' for today is Caribbean Princess with an arrival time of 6.00pm and departure on Tuesday 28th April at 5pm Camera links are: https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/ https://www.ftlauderdalewebcam.com/ (both Fort Lauderdale web cams are online again) With apologies to those who normally post the sailin/sailaway schedules! 21. My wife and I truly enjoyed the Inaugural Cruise on the Nieuw Statendam. It was quite special and did sail on the initial departure date. Still, the current date for the Rotterdam VII is still close to a year out and things could happen. So in your situation, having no flexibility on a possible delay, I think I would hold off on any booking till much later. Just keep tracking the progress of the ship's build and make a decision much closer in. This certainly will reduce you choice of cabin assignment, but at least you will have more knowledge of the departure date.

  23. Well, the inaugural Rotterdam VII cruise was supposed to start on May 15th but was already delayed to August 1st due to Covid and the shut down of the shipyard for six weeks earlier this year. So who knows if there might be further delays. But one would think that any delay would be communicated before final payment. Or am I being naive?! I believe the inaugural cruises for Nieuw Statendam and Koningsdam were on time but others will correct me on that if I'm wrong.
