  1. Would love some information about how you found Club HAL on the Nieuw Statendam. Our grandkids loved it on the New Amsterdam, but it looks like it's a lot smaller on the NS. Kids will be 8, 14, 16 at the time of sailing. I know the older ones can do what they want, but the younger one will need some HAL activity perhaps.

  3. Holland America is repatriating their crew to their home countries as I write this. Zaandam and Nieuw Statendam are on their way now to Europe to take back those crew members whose homes are in Europe. Both ships are due to arrive in Rotterdam on May 12th. Other HAL ships are taking crew back to Asia, not sure which ones.

  5. According to Marine Traffic, Nieuw Statendam is on her way from Port Everglades due to arrive in The Netherlands 12 May. That's a long way to go if HAL knows the cruises in Europe won't be happening. We are booked on a cruise out of Amsterdam to Norway departing 5 July and do not want to be on board when/if she sails. So, like others, we are waiting (and hoping) for the 'no cruise ban' to be extended. Bad enough for those who have cancelled and then have to wait several months for a refund, but if necessary we'll take the hit of loss of all money rather than be cooped up with thousands of others in a big bug incubator. It's unthinkable.

  8. I really like this itinerary, but I already have 2 trips planned for 2021 (although I'm not sure about Africa in February). This is a new ship that can currently sail the heritage fjords. Are there any updated standards coming in the next few years that would make the Nieuw Statendam unable to sail the heritage fjords, and when would that happen?
  9. We've only sailed HAL once, last year on the Nieuw Statendam, and they've been sending offesr for free cruises ever since, but my wife and I really like how we're treated on Princess. So much so, that we're turning down the 20% bonus and a free cruise. Call me stupid, but why spend a week or two on a ship where you're not happy with everything.
  10. Nieuw Statendam will be at pier 26 (port to) from 0530-1700. She is doing a 7-day Western Caribbean cruise. 11. Doone, my sister and I have a 4-day cruise on the Nieuw Statendam booked for Jan. 27, 2021. I'm looking forward to it, but if it's cancelled, no big deal. I have a $50 deposit down for the both of us, so not a lot invested in it as of today. No flights booked, only a hotel reservation. I booked the cruise last November, so even if they bump passengers to sail below capacity, we should be OK.
  12. Looking at these aft cabins on the NS and they are all available for a cruise...is there something wrong with them? Would love comments from anyone who has been in them. We're looking at taking our family (11) on a Caribbean cruise next year...these "sound nice". but concerned so many are available.
  13. today is Lover's Day and National Zucchini Bread Day Do you realize how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them? Meal suggestion for today - Smoky hake, beans & greens [ b]Stirrip Cay Grand Bahama Anchorage[/b] Nieuw Amsterdam Nieuw Statendam Rotterdam Veendam Volendam Zaandam Zuiderdam Puerto Vallarta Koningsdam [ b]La Paz Anchorage[/b] Maasdam Oosterdam [ b]Coronado Island[/b] Noordam [ b]At Sea Pacific[/b] Eurodam destination Manila eta 5/8 Westerdam destination Cabo San Lucas eta 4/24 Indian Ocean Amsterdam Destination is currently unlisted I believe that several of the ships have not updated the destination and may be wrong, sorry.
  14. Today, Sunday 3rd May, we would have been in Montréal having completed our Zaandam Canada-New England cruise. Then on Tuesday off to Amsterdam to board Nieuw Statendam next Sunday for a Baltics cruise, then home to Vancouver. We've been reminding each other of where we would have been, throughout the past week or two. Ahh well, there will be more cruises next year, and plenty to dream about. Now off to watch some of our old cruise movies again! 🙂
  15. Excellent program of the Nieuw Statendam You will wish to go to the North Cape another year and visit Alesund, Trondheim, Tromso, Hammerfest and a few other ports (very nice to visit some of them for the second time). In addition to the suggestions above: Molde: Travel like the locals: book a bus trip with them: Molde-Atlantic Road - Molde Stavanger: short walk through the street with the white houses next to the cruise terminal and do not forget to visit the canning museum somewhere in the middle at the right hand side of the street (do not forget to ask for the guide; he is very good!). Interesting story and display of the fishing industry. Oslo: take the public bus nearby to the Museum Island and visit one or more of the musea over there. A must see for young and old IMO: Viking museum. Enjoy your cruise.

Next up: Veendam on Wednesday 27 November.
  18. Current position of Nieuw Statendam and Zaandam is way out in the North Atlantic with speeds of 15 knots. Not sure what this means for either ship as both of these ladies have been sailing between Bahamas and Florida for weeks with periods where both were doing 0 knots. Anyone know what this means for these two ships? Copper maybe?
  19. Haven’t been in HAL in many years and I’m looking to try again and would appreciate any feedback. Our one and only HAL cruise was 9 years ago on the Maasdam. 14 days with the most amazing Caribbean itinerary. But we were bored on the ship. Best entertainment was the crew show. We really enjoyed that. Rest of the entertainment was a xylophone player and a violinist. Not our cup of tea. We've mostly sailed Princess, but it seems that with the new ships, the ship is the destination, Not the itinerary. Don’t get me wrong, the ship is very important, as is the itinerary. Quite frankly we’re getting bored with Princess’ same Caribbean ports and we’re looking for a change. Last few cruises we didn’t bother to get off the ship. Now to my question, 2 ships, same itinerary. If you had to choose between the Nieuw Amsterdam and the Nieuw Statendam, which would you choose and why? We are in out early 70’s and fairly active. We only want to compare the ships, not the ports as we’ve been to them before, just not on the same cruise. The ports offered are the relaxing beach ports. Just what we need right now. Thanks in advance.
  20. A very busy day in Port Everglades with eight cruise ships in port, one of which is making her first visit to FLL. Eurodam will be at pier 19 (port to) from 0515-1700 and then heading out on a 10-day Panama Canal Sunfarer cruise. Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (02 Dec 0800-1500); Oranjestad, Aruba (04 Dec 1300-2300); Willemstad, Curacao (05 Dec 0800-1600); Panama Canal (Cruising Canal) (07 Dec 0500-0500); Colon, Panama (07 Dec 1500-2000); Puerto Limon, Costa Rica (08 Dec 0730-1700); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (11 Dec a0700) Nieuw Statendam will be pier 26 (starboard to) from 0545-1700. She is going on a 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise. Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos (03 Dec 0800-1500); San Juan, Puerto Rico (04 Dec 1300-2300); St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (05 Dec 0800-1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (07 Dec 0800-1500); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (08 Dec a0700) Other ships in port are Adventure OTS at pier 29 from 0445-1730, Allure OTS at pier 18 from 0500-1530, Carnival Magic at pier 4 from 0400-1600, Celebrity Edge at pier 25 from 0600-1530, and Regal Princess at pier 21 from 0530-1600. The eighth cruise ship is the very new Sky Princess at pier 2 from 0430-2200. She made her maiden voyage in October of this year and is arriving from Europe. I could not find whether she plays "The Love Boat" theme (and we likely will not find out with a 10 pm sailing) but the other "Royal" class ships (Regal, Royal, and Majestic) do. The PTZtv webcams can be found at https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/ and https://www.ftlauderdalewebcam.com/. Next up: Koningsdam and Veendam on Wednesday, 4 December.

  22. Happy 1st Birthday December 5th. It’s hard to believe it’s a year ago that I boarded for the crossing.
  23. Happy Thanksgiving! What are the current shows on the main stage on the Nieuw Statendam? We’re sailing on her in a few weeks and am curious !
  24. Our Caribbean cruise on the Koningsdam turned out to be the last one of the season. We knew there were things going on out there, whispers of a virus in far off places like China and only one case in California. When we boarded, the only pressing question asked was if we had traveled to China in the last two weeks. That was on March 4th. The day we returned on March 15th, we came home to a changed world. I didn't feel up to doing this review considering all that has unfolded, but a fellow traveler on our cruise encouraged me to do so, so I am finally sitting down to recall the wonderful time we had on this Southern Wayfarer Cruise. We take a yearly winter/spring break from our otherwise hectic life, and this was our 12th cruise on HAL and our longest cruise ever at 11 glorious days. We flew in from Boston to FLL the day before, and this time stayed at Riverside Hotel. We have tried a handful of hotels in FLL, all have been nice and had their own charm. This hotel is old but it was very well kept, we stayed in the tower and the room was quite lovely, despite older touches like brass in the bathroom and a small TV. The room was super clean and the staff very friendly. We had an early dinner in their outside restaurant by the river, 'The Boatyard'. The food was so delicious especially after my winter diet, how many times did I dream of this? I had a wonderful fish sandwich and a cosmopolitan as we watched the boats drift back and forth. Embarkation day was finally here, and it was quite seamless. As we walked up the gangway my husband and I gave each other that promised gangway kiss, so grateful to be able to share another cruise together! We accepted an upsell two days previous to a Signature Suite, so quickly went to our room to check it out. Last year we had sailed on Nieuw Statendam in a Signature Suite and had been crazy about it. On Koningsdam, there is a tub and very small shower vs. the very large shower and no tub on Nieuw Statendam. We much prefer the layout of the NS, as the shower was just so tiny on Koningdam. Aside from this, the room was spacious and identical in every great feature of her sister ship. We met our cabin steward Eli, and he and his assistant Martin were typical of the great HAL service we have always received. We didn't have one complaint and were pampered with a spotless cabin for the entire cruise. It was so nice to have two sea days to start with. We are early risers and sun/water lovers, so we were the among the first to be at the pool those first two mornings. We left our chairs to get breakfast at the Lido and bring it back to the nice tables by the Lido pool. There is nothing like having coffee and a wonderful omelette while looking out to sea! After a few more hours at the pool (and being the first ones in the water!) it was time to move on. We often try and "zig" while others "zag", a favorite phrase from Steve Birnbaum on how to navigate Disney. It works during a cruise, too, and we often try and be at places at off hours to minimize crowds. This cruise was pretty chill however, and didn't get ramped up at the pools until mid day/afternoon. We had excellent weather the entire cruise, except for our first stop: St. Maarten. We had booked a Golden Eagle Catamaran cruise (had done it 3 times before so knew it was a good one) and met outside in our designated spot when it started to rain. We walked to our destination in very gloomy conditions, lost about 25% of the people along the way as it was pretty depressing, but we pressed on, as we knew the weather in this place changes very quickly. So glad we did, about 15 minutes after we boarded the skies cleared and it was the most wonderful, beautiful day as we swam in those clear waters. Later that evening we met people that took bus tours, and that was hard to hear how they sat in buses while damp from the rain. It is always a risk, taking excursions, you just never know with the weather. After today, we had beautiful calm seas and gorgeous days. MDR service and food was outstanding. We had fixed late seating and had wonderful service from Gunawan and Marvin. We tried new things each night, it was presented so beautifully and the timing was perfect. Dawn, our wine stewardess, was just so sweet and proficient. This cruise had a different vibe from years past when things seemed rushed in the MDR.. Not sure if changes have been made, or because we were late fixed, or because there is a great manager, but it was noticeable. In my review to HAL I called it a "happy cruise". Looking back now, it makes me sad to think how everything has abruptly stopped. We had more days of pampering and adventure, I will continue the review later if there is an interest. For now, our thoughts are buzzing with concern for our families and our country and the world. And of course for all the wonderful HAL staff that have made cruising such an extraordinary pleasure to us! Thank You!!!
  25. We have a large back yard, a fire pit, several flower beds and a nice large garden to enjoy this year. That is our vacay. So glad we were able to cruise for 21 days this past Dec. and then another 21 days in January. We just cancelled our Holland America cruise on the Nieuw Statendam for December this year. Not ready to take the plunge but at the same time we booked 21 days on the Celebrity Edge for December 2021. Lots of reading and catching up to do since have not sailed Celebrity since 2010.
