  1. I have a last minute cruise on hold for January 18th on the Oosterdam. Can anyone comment on the quality/speed of the wifi on the Oosterdam? I need a good connection and a constant connection would be ideal. Anyone's input is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  2. It's a very busy day in Port Everglades today with 7 ships setting sail! It should be some parade. Oosterdam is scheduled to sail at 5:00 pm and is doing a 7 night Sandy Beaches (Western Caribbean). She is at pier 26. It was too late to get the map but here is her itinerary: Fort Lauderdale, San Juan (8th), Amber Cove (9th), Fort Lauderdale (12th) Also in port, all scheduled to sail at 4 pm are the Carnival Conquest, Celebrity Infinity, Majesty of the Seas, Pacific Princess and Royal Princess. Scheduled for 5:30 is the Adventure of the Seas. The Pacific Princess is commencing her World Cruise so there should be some good toots indeed! The webcams are located at https://portevergladeswebcam.com & https://fortlauderdalewebcam.com Apologies for starting this thread late. I missed this one inadvertantly in my listing. I'll double check it today and try not to make the same mistake again. Next up - Nieuw Amsterdam on January 6th.
  3. It was the best of cruises, it was the ...... best of cruises. A little take off from that famous author Charley Dickens, At least no one lost their heads over this cruise. Hi y'all. RedneckBob hear. Me and the Misses just completed one of those back to back cruises on the beautiful and elegant Oosterdam, 12/8/18 to 12/22/18, Caribbean cruise. The story I'm about to tell is true, the names were changed to protect the innocent and me. my writing is based on my observations only and may not reflect the observations of fellow cruisers, since everyone may have different views and I guess it's time to begin. Overall this was a great cruise!. Excellent food, great service, generally great weather and ok entertainment. Hear's what happened. Embarkation: It was a breeze. Got to port at 11:20 AM, checked in, walked on board and was stuffing my face at the Lido by 11:35 AM. Cabin: We had one of those semi-sweet cabins, what y'all call Signature Suites. It was cabin 6066; thank goodness there was a zero between all those sixes! HUGE flat screen TV where we viewed many movies. Once again we had no "Do not Disturb: signs on the door so once again I borrowed that sign at the Lincoln Center to put outside our cabin door that read, "Quiet Please, Performance in Progress" . Had great cabin stewards but the guys worked to hard. Had 28 cabins to clean each day that included 7 verandahs, 3 Neptune Suites and 18 Signature Suites. Me and the Misses tried to help. Each morning she made that point on the toilet tissue and I guess I cabin steward got concerned because instead of leaving chocolates on the pillows he left prunes. (I know an old joke) Captain Rens van Eerten: Our favorite Captain. Great guy and very funny. At the first Mariner award ceremony no awards were earned but they did recognize me and the Misses for our level plus a couple who had plus 1700 days. The couple were not very tall so van Eerten being a tall gentlemen got on his knees to make sure his head was in the picture and then proceeded to walk out of the area on his knees. Very funny. I asked the Captain later it that was first or last time he was brought to his knees. It was for the first time he was speechless. Also talked with him at a cocktail party. I told him that you had a following on the Cruise Critic and you were the Master of Toots. Actually someone called you the "Queen of Toots" but I did not know you that well Entertainment: Was just ok in the Theater. Lincoln Center was excellent. Billboard had best two singers I ever saw but as in the past kept repeating same songs for same shows, like Top 100 songs, sang same 14 songs at same show; there are 100 to chose from! When HAL had piano bar very rarely repeated songs. BB King, great musicians and singers but also sang same songs over and over again and were load. By day 6 & 7 of cruise the BB King lounge became half full. I do not know how long it will work. Crows Nest: Though I know this had been discussed on prior thread, the Crows have flown the coop. No entertainment, no happy hour cause the bar is nothing, exploration cafe is nothing and no activities at all held at CN. Way to go HAL on making one of my favorite areas useless. Oh by the way, no more coffee cup covers for your specialty coffee. If HAL stops using straws, that will be the last straw ! Port of call were all good; only missed HMC on 2nd b2b due to high swells. Otherwise another great HAL cruise.
  4. Is BB King venue gone? This listing I found of entertainment on the Oosterdam: Entertainment Vista theater Casino Crow's Nest lounge/nightclub Lincoln Center Stage classical music lounge Billboard Online music lounge Queen's lounge/Culinary Arts center Hudson card room Stuyvesant room Screening room Club HAL kids club Club HAL gameroom The Loft teens club
  5. We recently completed a 36 day back-to-back cruise on the Oosterdam in the Mediterranean and was disappointed in the change to the shops. The concession was changed and the new operators have changed the style of clothing and accessories to a younger demographic. Also, there is a decrease in the range of items in the shops and there were no 'cheap' bargains (i.e. $10 and $20 'specials'). Has anyone noticed the same change on other HAL ships ? Regards, Harry W.
  6. We just returned from a great cruise! 26 days on the Oosterdam, boarding in Venice October 15 and arriving in Fort Lauderdale Nov 10. We actually arrived in Venice on October 12. Our flight was good, we had used miles to get business class seats. We water taxi'ed to our Hotel, the Danieli, Located right around the corner from St Mark's, just one building over from the Doge's Palace. It was a sunny day in Venice, fortunately we got there prior to the horrible flooding. We walked around in the sun for a while, grabbed a little lunch and then collapsed to try to sleep off the jet lag.
  7. We are sailing next month to the Caribbean on the Oosterdam. Our first time on HAL - 1 previous, cruise on Princess. I have two questions - has anyone used the laundry service on the Oosterdam and if so, what is the cost and were any garments damaged? ( Packing will be easier if I know the laundry service is reliable and reasonably priced.) Second question: The HAL brochure says that each ship has a daily Catholic Mass. Does anyone have info on whether there is actually daily mass on the Oosterdam and when and where the service is held. Thank you, in advance, for any assistance with these questions.
  8. Oosterdam will be in PE on a relatively quiet Saturday. She will be at Pier 26 (port to) from 0545-1700. Cruise Schedule: Fort Lauderdale, Florida (29 Dec d1600); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (30 Dec 0800-1600); Falmouth, Jamaica (01 Jan 0800-1700); George Town, Grand Cayman (02 Jan 0800-1600); Cozumel, Mexico (03 Jan 1100-2300); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (05 Jan a0700) (I tried a different site so the schedules don't take up so much room. Let me know if you have a preference of one over the other.) Also in port are Independence OTS at pier 18 from 0600-1630 and Royal Princess at pier 2 from 0500-1600. The PTZtv webcams can be found at https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/ and https://www.ftlauderdalewebcam.com/ . For the Addicts: Zuiderdam will be in St. Maarten from 0800-1600. https://www.portstmaartenwebcam.com/ Next up: Nieuw Amsterdam and Nieuw Statendam on Sunday as well as Rotterdam in Tampa.
  9. Looking for anyone recently on the Oosterdam to see what the current shows, and entertainment are. Was there a comedy show? What is the current musical show? We are sailing March 16th and my sister on January 12th. Thank you!
  10. Has anyone recently sailed on Holland America's Oosterdam and do you have a drink menu for this ship? I am trying to decide if I want to buy the drink package and would like to know the costs of drinks. I would especially like to know what kinds of beers they have onboard. I like IPA's but will also be happy with a good pale ale. Also, do you know if the drink package is for the entire ship including the Main Dining Room? I would love to have wine with dinner. Any information you can give me would be appreciated.
  11. The ship was in very good shape, it’s workers were constantly keeping her in sea worthy shape. The food and service was good to great as always. First neptune suite was not impressed with it’s so called free breakfast at pinnacle grill, one pays big bucks not to get treated for 90+ minutes to have breakfast Dinner was no different when it came to the same lengthy problem. We didn’t have issues like this while two NA cruises... still service and quality keep bringing us back to HAL along with it’s smaller vessels...
  12. For anyone interested in copies of the MDR menus from a recent sailing, I just posted a zip file that includes menus for all of the MDR dinners, embarkation MDR lunch, the two sea day MDR lunches (2nd sea day was the invitation-only Mariner's Society Lunch), coffee and cocktail prices for Explorations Cafe, the onboard speciality restaurant options, and the Beverage Event list (e.g., wine tastings, etc...) to my recent Trip Report: The comment that includes the direct link to the zip is: I posted this as a separate topic so people are aware of the zip file with the menus, but I also would appreciate the reads on my Trip Report post - thanks!

  14. Does anyone know the weekly cost of a cabana on the Oosterdam? I need a place out of the sun.
  15. Hello, I see various photos of signature suites online even when I search for 2018 or ‘refurbished.’ Some look new with dark woods, subdued purples, grays and greens and are very attractive. Some look old with blonde woods with bright red fabrics, etc and look very outdated. Does anyone know if all signature suites on the Oosterdam have been updated? Or just some? Or which ones to look for? Or if you do a guarantee, are you more or less likely to get an updated one? If I’m going for a signature suite, I want it to be updated. Thanks!! Appreciate the help.
  16. First time on Holland America on January 26, 2019. Curious which pier they dock at in St. Thomas.
  17. How is the Oosterdam? I believe there was a dry dock last year. I know it is a different class of ship, but is she similar to Nieuw Amsterdam now with the recent updates? Is it true that she also has a Retreat? We are currently booked for NS, but weren’t 100% thrilled with K-dam, so we’re considering switching to Oosterdam or NA. We love NA but are thinking Oosterdam would give us a new experience. It is significantly less $$. Are the prices less because it is a lesser experience? I’ve read some things about old furniture, etc in public areas, but I’m hoping that is no longer since the dry dock. Are there current photos out there? Thank you!!

  22. First of all— thank you all for your expert opinions and advice on all things HAL! We are just off our third HAL cruise, over Thanksgiving, but our first with our son, who is four years old, so we had a little bit of nerves going in to last week! (NB, this wasn’t our first cruise rodeo— we’ve taken little man on Disney but we adults were Moused out and ready for something... else!). We had so much fun, we booked next Thanksgiving on the Nieuw Statendam. The Oosterdam was wonderful. Our cabin was wonderful— balcony on deck 5 forward. Easily accessible to elevators/stairs, and we had great cabin stewards as always. Our steward got into the habit of asking our son what kind of towel animal he wanted each night— AND each morning!! Spoiled child got two towel animals every day. It was sweet, and some were very intricate! I was very impressed! Food was great. We had anytime dining in the main dining room deck 2, and had a reservation each night for either 5:30 or 5:15, which was perfect for our son. Service in the main dining room was spotty— one night it was near catastrophic— our server brought our food, but never brought our son’s food. Then we sat for at least 5-7 minutes with still no plate for our son, and no re-appearance of our server, so I got up and walked to a head waiter, explained the problem, then in a millisecond, our son’s food appeared, along with profuse apologies. Four nights we had perfect service, and three nights we had mediocre to poor service in the main dining room, so not sure what happened with those serving teams, but it was very off. Lido was wonderful, and the service quick. My husband had a beverage package for sodas, though I did not. A word about Club HAL— my son loved it! The counselors provided structured activities but there was also a lot of flexibility because of the number of children on board. Sailing our week were 280 children (total of 2100 passengers). We could access the club schedule on our stateroom smart tv’s which was handy. Our son was a little charmer— the crew would give him high fives at every turn, knew him by name after the first day, and he left the week with his very own free HAL lanyard and pin from the cruise director. He thought he was hot stuff. We utilized HAL’s EXC tours in Grand Cayman (dolphin encounter), Jamaica (Martha Brae rafting trip), and rented a cabana on Half Moon Cay. Our beach excursion was canceled in Cozumel so we did an independent trip to Chankanaab. The EXC staff went above and beyond— even emailed the Martha Brae tour operators to make sure my husband, myself, and our son could all ride in the same raft. In sum, we had a fantastic week. My husband says he still prefers Eurodam because of Tamarind, but I didn’t miss it. Truthfully we wouldn’t have gone anyway last week because of our son, lol! Now we can look forward to next year on the Nieuw Statendam! Thanks again for your help and tips!
  23. Going on Oosterdam in 30 days. Anyone have current MDR MENUS?
  24. New to holland. Was looking into an alaksa cruise but do not know anything about holland. Past cruises have been carnival ( which is a little rowdy with booze for us) NcL which was ok but kinda boring. We like carnival cuz the shows and comedy shows and day activities like bingo. Was worried holland may be a little to boring or slow for a lack of a better word. We are 50 and kids with us in 20s. Not real drinkers or outgoing but love shows and bingo not really bars. Does this ship offer daily bingo and little daytime shows and such and at night a Broadway show or magic or comedy . Somthing other then music in a bar. And dress. Can I wear khaki pants and a polo shirt to dinner except on gala note of course. Kids have to wear slacks at dinner or can they wear the new fad yogi pants and a top? Do they sell bottle water to purchase before hand so we can have water in room like a case ? Is there empty fridges on board in rooms or are they stocked Ships seem small is there alot of movement on them ? Since so small? Any I site or things you can share I would be grateful
