  1. Looks like there are only two forward facing Signature Suites on the Vista class ships (5001 and 5002). Here is a link to pictures of cabin 5002 on the Oosterdam. http://halfacts.com/5002-oosterdam/
  2. We had eleven passengers on the tour and were escorted by the Cruise Director Hamish to various locations within the ship . We toured the bridge, kitchen, laundry, storage areas, tailor shop, waste disposal areas and engine control room. We were allowed to take pictures in every area we toured. Captain Sybe de Boer joined us on the bridge and added to the information already provided to us by a junior officer. The ships photographer took pictures of us with the Captain that were given to us at the end of the tour. At each location, the supervisor in charge, provided an explanation and answered questions. The tour lasted about 3 hours and 30 minutes and did require some walking up and down stairways on the lower decks. At the end of the tour we went to one of the lounges for a drink and received a HAL bag with an America's Test Kitchen apron, photo with the Captain and a HAL mug. We tried to take this tour on the Oosterdam in January 2019, while on a Caribbean cruise, but they were not able to get the minimum amount of participants. It didn't help matters that the tour was never published in the When and Where during the cruise. We knew about the tour from another recent cruise and went to Guest Services on Day #1 to sign up. I visited the desk almost every day to see if any one else signed up but the tour never occurred. Go to Guest Services on Day #1 and sign up. If your lucky, the tour will be published in the When and Where and generate interest. We mentioned it to the many different people we dined with and unfortunately found an interested couple at the end of the cruise when it was too late.
  3. Hello Sailors, we have tried to research a "Behind the scenes tour" on Oosterdam. We can't find any information on this. Has anyone taken such a tour and if so, how did you line it up? Many thanks for any information.
  4. Following along...your blog is great. Love your photos and glad you enjoyed your stay in our home city of Vancouver. We would have been on this cruise but are visiting with our first grand baby in Quebec. We will be doing the Mexico cruise on the Oosterdam in late November out of San Diego and always stay there for several days. One of my favourite cities.
  5. First time we received this today too for our upcoming 2 weeks on the Oosterdam. It went to my junk folder and at first I thought it was spam. Maybe too many are not bringing valid passports so HAL decided to send reminders.
  6. Am in a Signature Suite on Oosterdam Mexican Riviera December 7, at an amazing after-final-payment price. Couldn't get an equivalent super deal on a Neptune Suite. So, just added Club Orange for $25pp/pd = $350. I know many 4 and 5 star Mariners are dismayed, expecting Club Orange to erode their hard earned benefits. But, I want easier embarkation, disembarkation, and tendering at Cabo, due to a new mobility challenge *sigh*. And, am still only 3 star.
  7. For my July 25, 2021 Oosterdam Alaskan Explorer cruise, the Tracy Arm Expedition is listed as one of the Juneau port activities. (Actually, passengers get on the smaller boat on the way to Juneau, explore Tracy Arm and then are taken to the docked ship in Juneau.) When I check the list of excursions, the Oosterdam on July 25, 2021 is listed for the Tracy Arm Expedition. It's one that I was REALLY looking forward to. However, when I go to my Shore Excursions under Already Booked, it isn't listed as one of the options! I called the HAL Shore Excursions number and the consultant was very surprised it wasn't there because it is very popular. She suggested I check back frequently in case it gets added.
  8. I waited to vote until we completed our Oosterdam Mexico run, to make sure our summer Alaska cruise wasn't just a "one off." I don't like the direction HAL is going. Everything so pared down! The ship was in great condition, though, and lots of big families and groups seemed to be enjoying themselves. Must be some great third- and fourth-guest deals. But for us, no; the new HAL doesn't work for us at all.

  10. Me too! I live in Kakaako and rounded the corner and saw her as well! We sailed on Oosterdam last summer and will sail Maasdam in February.
  11. Yes, that's the same menu we had last April on Oosterdam and last Christmas on Nieuw Statendam. I can recall the previous menu with fried chicken, mashed potatoes and spinach. OMG, was it lusciously delicious. I loved it and was so disappointed when it was removed. On the last cruise, my friends and I were in a hurry, so we all ordered the steak sandwich. Unfortunately, it had MSG in it, and I'm allergic, so I spent the next two hours in the bathroom. So much for the activities we'd planned for that afternoon before the Muster. I won't ever order it again. Yes, the MDR confirmed my allergies when we checked in with the maître d', and I asked about the MSG before ordering. Not a great way to start a cruise, but maître d' and others expressed apologies, and the staff took good care of me for the rest of the cruise. How long has this menu been in effect? At what point will they change it? We're on NS again this Christmas and wonder if we'll see a different menu or not.
  12. One way around the crowded Lido Deck where we truly could find no place to sit at lunch is to purchase a Retreat Cabana. Yes, it's expensive for the week, but we purposely booked a lower category cabin, either an inside (huge cabins on Deck One) or an outside on the same deck. With the money we saved, we bought the cabana package. I highly recommend the Retreat (not to be confused with the Lido Cabana spaces) because you have a butler who will wait on you hand and foot. On my most recent cruise aboard Oosterdam (yes, different class ship but same idea with the Retreat), our steward would bring us breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack which included champagne. The Retreat gives you a designated place to sit; it's quiet; the service is amazing. Be aware that the ship will close this area if the winds are too high. You won't receive a refund for any unused days; however, we've never had this happen on any of our cruises. Just be aware that it can happen. The menu offers selections from the Lido Marketplace, so you don't have to contend with lines or crowds. Our steward even offered to order/pick up Dive In orders or fetch ice cream from the Lido, so we really didn't have to do anything for lunch/snacks but sit and wait for our requests to be fulfilled. You will also receive bottled waters and fruit. You will be totally pampered and spoiled. If you want to dip a toe in the pool, it's steps away if you take the outside stairs down to the Lido Pool. If this idea appeals to you, order before your cruise to avoid disappointment. These cabanas can sell out prior to the cruise. Enjoy. As for Eurodam, it's been at least 5 years since we've cruised on this ship; however, she is similar to her sister, Nieuw Amsterdam. Both have Tamarind, a unique Pan Asian restaurant, which is well worth the money.
  13. We are doing a back to back on the Oosterdam in November and booked the same cabin so we don't have to move. But we received two separate booking numbers. Is this typical? Have done many cruises but first B2B...Thank you for sharing all of the experiences above!

  15. We have always had very good food on HAL going back to 1997 including 2 on the Oosterdam last November and again in March. Next up is the NA on Nov. 30, you have me concerned.
  16. Our last 2 cruises on the Oosterdam there was an area right next to the pre-made sandwiches were you could have a crew member make you a sandwich just the way you want it. IMHO, the premades are a joke.
  17. We had a Guarantee Neptune Suite (casino rate so really cheap for a NS) on the Oosterdam in Feb. and did not find out our NS assignment until just a few days before the cruise. Got a terrible location on Deck 4 way aft. Smaller NS than the usual ones and so far from everything. Had booked NS with a cheap casino rate on 4 previous HAL cruises and got to book ones we wanted close to Neptune Lounge. Won't do it again. Our HAL agent said now the NS Guarantees are usually the worst locations as those who pay regular fares get to choose the best locations, usually on the same deck as Neptune Lounge, and the Guarantees get what's left.

  19. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING Updated October 18th, 2019 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. This week’s additions and changes are in BOLD and highlighted in aqua (sea colours). 21. We were on the Oosterdam in Feb. and were quite surprised how casual the Gala Night had become regarding dress. We hadn't sailed on HAL in a few years. DH used to wear a tux and I wore street length cocktail dresses, but we gave up the formal attire about 4 years ago, about the time we retired 🙂 Now he wears khaki or black slacks and a silk tropical shirt and I wear nice slacks and dressy top. OP, disregard the snarky comments and ask away when you have questions - most of us are here to help.
  22. We're thinking about doing just this next April 2020.....our Koningsdam 4 night repositioning cruise debarks in Vancouver the Oosterdam will be right next to us going to Seattle overnight so we're thinking it would be an easy way to get to Seattle to visit our kids then fly back there. Makes sense dollar wise......

  24. A few months back I posted my comparison of HAL with Royal. You can read that [here]. I noted that we would be sailing with Celebrity in October. And so we did. I have a review of the cruise pending (I will update this post when it publishes) but I wanted to get my thoughts down on the differences while my memories of the cruise are still fresh. This was only our second Celebrity cruise. Our first, on Century, was pretty dreary. She was sold within a year of our cruise so that might have had something to do with it. This time we got a good deal through my spouse's connection with MLife, and his parents have status with Royal so Celebrity was a good compromise for a family cruise. The Ship Celebrity Eclipse is a beautiful ship in great shape. At 2852 passengers, she is larger than any HAL ship. She will be “Edgified” next year and more suites and cabins will be added. I hate it when they do this. We found the ship to be a bit more crowded at peak times than Vista or Signature Class ships of the HAL line. Yet there were plenty of places to go to have a quieter experience. We almost always found a table to play cards when we wanted to. There were open chairs on the decks. No squabbling over deck chairs like you read all the time on the Celebrity forums.. The ship was very quiet early in the morning. We like to get up early and get coffee, head to the gym, then have breakfast. We had the ship almost to ourselves from, say, 5 am to 7 am. I don’t typically swim in a cruise ship pool, but the adults only Solarium pool at 7 am was usually empty, and I think if we go again I will try it. The gym was great. Lots of room. We had a small group of regulars early in the morning and save for one day there were plenty of machines for everyone. I enjoyed the daily stretch classes (which were free) and they had a variety of classes for a $18 fee. It seems like the classes were pretty well attended. Sometimes the HAL classes only have one or two people in them. Very comparable. The Food I would say the HAL Lido Market Buffet is definitely better than the buffet on the Eclipse, both in terms of variety and quality. There were “daily specials” on both lines but the Celebrity specials, well, weren’t very special. We were always able to find a table for 4 in the Oceans Buffet, whereas we did have some waiting at times on Oosterdam. If the Buffet is better on HAL, I think the Main Dining Room experience is pretty much even. Some hits, some misses. The Celebrity Chic Night menu was good, and the Beef Wellington was tasty. One of our party had the lobster and it was “okay.” Service Both lines have good service. I have an impression that the ships owned by RCI have more service issues but that was not apparent on the Eclipse. We had perhaps the best main dining room service we’ve ever had on any cruise line. That is high praise. Service at the Cafe al Bacio was excellent. As were the drinks and pastries. I'd say coffee drinks similar to Explorers Cafe, but treats much more diverse at Bacio. The room attendant was very efficient. We follow a pretty set schedule and he worked with it almost exactly and we never came back to an unmade bed. Officers were very visible throughout the ship. Captain Leo is a real professional. Very engaging. He was on the gangway at departure saying goodbye to the passengers. Persian Garden vs Thalassotherapy I bought the PG pass ($149 for 10 days the day of sailing) partly because we had onboard credit to spend. There is no pool. The steam and dry aromatherapy rooms were much larger than on HAL ships, and both worked! (My last two cruises on HAL one or the other was out of order for the duration). The heated loungers were nearly identical. Where HAL gets the nod is the therapy pool. There is no equivalent on Eclipse. In my opinion, if you like the water, the HAL spa pass is a much better deal. Also note, steam and dry sauna are available for adults in the spa changing rooms on Eclipse. You don’t need a special pass to use them. So unless you like the heated loungers, you really don't need to buy a PG pass. Perks I don’t really care about perks, but my inlaws do. They have status on Royal which is reciprocated (minus one level) on Celebrity. They get free drinks at “happy hour” and some other perks that they enjoy and that is what keeps them loyal to Royal. They keep telling us the HAL perks are pretty skimpy and their Carnival status doesn’t get reciprocated. This matters to some people and probably should be looked at. Passengers Celebrity passengers are a pretty diverse cross section of people. We heard multiple languages being spoken. All ages. There were kids, but not many of them. The passengers seem to stay up later and get up later. They seem to drink more alcohol and the bars are pretty busy. There were tons of activities on the sea days. They had a passenger choir! Lots to do. Much more than HAL. So something to consider if you like to be entertained. It did seem as though the Eclipse passengers were, overall, somewhat younger than on the typical 10 day plus HAL sailing. Perhaps a bit pushier than your typical HAL passengers. Entertainment Well, what can I say? Of course entertainment on Eclipse was much more a focus than on any HAL ship I’ve been on. It really is no contest. The live music nightly in the Atrium is also a nice plus. It was somewhat uneven quality wise, but it was nice to have that going on. It brought life to the center of the ship. Summary I would sail Celebrity again. Their boards are full of people bemoaning the cutbacks, complaining about Edgification, cutting up the ships into classes, etc. But from my perspective, the Eclipse offered a nice cruise. I still look at itinerary first. HAL continues to have better itineraries. For example, January 2021 we are considering Antarctica. I would not sail Eclipse to Antarctica. For one, the bow is only open to Suite passengers. But besides that, the HAL Santiago to BA itinerary is just better. Value. HAL provides some great value for the money. We got a good deal on our Celebrity Hawaii cruise. But if we allow our MLife status to lapse by not going to Las Vegas this year, that value will be gone. Overall, prices are higher on Celebrity. Our next cruise will be Westerdam Japan Transpacific 2020. We will probably look for a Celebrity cruise to appease the inlaws. Maybe New England in the fall.
