  1. I had a Meet & Greet post for those of us on the March 16th sailing of the Oosterdam and met many of you onboard. Looking to connect and get your feedback on the cruise! Your experience, what you liked or didn't like. Favorite port etc. Anyone out there?
  2. I hope Kathi is ok and just busy, she hasn't been on Cruise Critic since Wednesday. The Oosterdam has arrived in Fort Lauderdale and will presumably be leaving at 1700. She came in just a few minutes ago. I hope someone will fill in the other details. The webcams are at: https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/ and https://www.ftlauderdalewebcam.com/ Roy
  3. Help! I have been going over the sample menus I am finding for the main dining room on the Oosterdam and I am the worlds pickiest eater. I know I can ask for steak, can I ask for chicken? i see sometimes it is chicken with rice pilaf. But I like fries or potatoes of some kind, can I order fries like I always did on Carnival? I think the worst part is there is no description on a lot of the menus and I have no idea what to expect. Thank you all!!!
  4. Is there a plan to convert the other HAL ships to have the Rolling Stones Rock Room installed? If so, how soon?
  5. We loved the Taco Bar on the Zuiderdam last month. Is it on the Oosterdam and/or the Nieuw Amsterdam?
  6. Does anyone know who the cruise director is (or will be) on the Oosterdam for the San Diego-Vancouver sailing departing April 30?
  7. There are 4 ships in Port Everglades for this sail a way and one of them is a blue hulled beauty. 8. Where do you go to book Oosterdam specialty dining reservations on embarkation day? Also, on our recent Koningsdam cruise, they offered us a discount at Tamarind for the first night of the cruise, but didn't extend the offer for Pinnacle Grill. I'm guessing they never offer a discount at Pinnacle Grill on any ship? Is there any change of price/tax if I prepay for dinner reservations before the cruise?
  9. Having only been on Carnival before this, the last cruise I was on I so enjoyed watching the depth of the water on our cabin TV. Is something like that available on the Oosterdam also? Thanks guys!!
  10. Hope no one was going through withdrawal waiting for the next sail a way! It's been a few days but there are 6 ships in port for this day and one of them is a blue hulled beauty. 11. What is the Hydro pool? There just isn't much info on the website. i am sure it costs to use but I can't find that info either. Anyone on here use it recently on the Oosterdam and know the costs? Thanks!
  12. Just off the Oosterdam and I am posting some comments about various aspects of the cruise. This will be about the food. My history of cruising began back in the late 1980s and have cruised most winters since. The last 10 or so have been on HAL. Typically we do the late seating fixed time as we like the more casual pace as well as getting to know the wait staff and having them get to know us. In fact we have enjoyed the MDR experience so much we do not use the specialty restaurants or Lido for dinner I have always been a defender of HAL's food despite reading many complaints over the past few years on this board. Sadly, I must join the complainers. I found the MDR food mediocre this cruise. Some examples were a catfish fillet that was described as lightbreaded with cornmeal and spices. In reality it was something I could get in my local Kroger's frozen fish department in a box. Overbreaded and over deep fried. The next night was a "regional specialty item" - pepper pot soup. May have been the worst cruise item I have ever had. A few pieces of overcooked meat cubes (likely leftover short ribs from the previous night) over which a dilute beef broth was poured. Yes we found out about the $10 charge for an extra entree when my wife wanted to add a lobster tail to a veal chop rather than have the surf and turf. I got the surf and turf. The lobster tail was not bad but the "turf" may have been the worst version of a steak I have ever had anywhere. It seem like a filet you might get an an Applebees and then sliced into thirds. Must have been all of 3 oz. And no cold soups the entire cruise - these used to be the best part of the dining experience for me. We had breakfast in the PG - excellent service and the food was okay but as you know nothing different from the MDR. We did lido for lunch a few times, again not too bad but no smoked fish or tropical fruits ever. My first cruise in 25 where I was disappointed overall in the food.
  13. There are 2 blue hulled beauties sailing for this one. One in Port Everglades and one in San Diego. 14. It will be quite a busy day in Port Everglades but only one blue hulled beauty will be sailing. Ms Oosterdam is scheduled to be at pier 21 and will be doing a 7 day Western Caribbean itinerary: Fort Lauderdale, Florida (02 Mar d1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (03 Mar 0800-1600); Montego Bay, Jamaica (05 Mar 0800-1700); George Town, Grand Cayman (06 Mar 0800-1600); Cozumel, Mexico (07 Mar 1100-2300); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (09 Mar a0700) Other ships in port are: Majesty Of The Seas (pier 18), Coral Princess (pier 26), Celebrity Infinity (pier 19), Caribbean Princess (pier 02), Adventure Of The Seas (pier 29) & Carnival Conquest (pier 04). 15. A while back, I found the rarest of things, a Caribbean itinerary with four, yes four ports, I’ve never been to despite having cruised in that region eight times previously on Carnival, Celebrity, RC, Princess and Norwegian. This is on the Oosterdam for winter 2019. When initially researching the ship last winter, I found quite a few negative reviews, but also some hope for improvement with the scheduled dry dock that occurred several months back. I figured I’d wait and see how the reviews seemed post dry dock before pulling the trigger, and now that I’m revisiting this, the reviews are still decidedly mediocre post-dry dock. For example, the overall June sailing CC rating is only 3.4 stars with a number of harsh comments. So, before deciding anything, I thought I’d see if any very recent travelers on Oosterdam have any further info or opinions to share? My last cruise was a disappointment on the older Jewel of the Seas and I don’t want to repeat that experience.
  16. On the March 30th Oosterdam sailing, our family has booked the family cabana. It's been 6 years since we've rented a cabana. My question is: Where do we check in to receive access to this area? Front Desk or the cabana area itself? Thanks.
  17. Hope everyone did not suffer from withdrawal waiting nearly a week for the next sail a way out of Port Everglades. We have one blue hulled beauty for this sail a way - Oosterdam. 19. Anyone been on the Oosterdam recently? We have been on many HAL ships and are considering a Panama Cruise in April on the Oosterdam and wonder about the library and a movie theatre now , two important features we always loved about HAL as they really made our trip. Not interested in the National Geographic shows, we have seen them so many times, they need to offer something new.
  20. I'm going on an Alaskan cruise in July on the Oosterdam. Does anyone know if they have karaoke?
  21. We will be boarding the Oosterdam next Saturday and I have a question about laundry. As there are no self serve laundry facilities aboard the ship, do they offer the "full bag" special during the 7 night cruise? if so, what is the cost? In addition to the 7 nights on the ship, we will be gone another 5 nights so will definitely need laundry done. Thank you
  22. What like the following information please Where is the Welcome Onboard Mariner Society Reception held and is it still between 2-3PM? Is the Mariner Champagne Brunch at noon and is it in the Lower or Upper Dining Room (read it's in the Main Dining Room and if true which is the Main)?
  23. DH and I recently sailed on a 7-day Oosterdam Eastern Caribbean itinerary. Last time we sailed on HAL was on the 10-day Zuiderdam Panama Canal itinerary in Nov. 2016. I was amazed at how passengers were so much more casually dressed on the O than on the Z or on previous HAL cruises. Not making a judgement comment at all, just an observation. We brought more casual clothes ourselves than usual and I worried we would feel out of place. Not at all. We live in FL, so drive to the ports and not a question of having to bring extra clothes on planes. Many people changed back into shorts after dinner, too, when in the past most dressed up for dinner and stayed that way after dinner. DH was turned away at dinner because he had on shorts, but he just returned to our NS and changed into long pants. We started cruising in 1994 and dressed to the nines on gala nights and DH wore coat and tie for other dinners. This was our 48th cruise overall, 8th on HAL, and it has been interesting to observe how the times have changed in regard to dress. We sail mostly on Carnival and the same is true on those cruises, too. We don't mind it a bit!
  24. The Oosterdam is set to sail out of Port Everglades and, of course we are all hoping that our captain’s finger will get ‘stuck’ on the horn again. She is doing two different segments for this one and is scheduled to be at pier 26. The first is the 7 day Eastern Caribbean: Fort Lauderdale, Florida (16 Feb d1700); Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos (18 Feb 0800-1500); San Juan, Puerto Rico (19 Feb 1300-2300); St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (20 Feb 0800-1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (22 Feb 0800-1500); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (23 Feb a0700) And the second is the 14 day Eastern/Tropical Caribbean: Fort Lauderdale, Florida (16 Feb d1700); Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos (18 Feb 0800-1500); San Juan, Puerto Rico (19 Feb 1300-2300); St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (20 Feb 0800-1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (22 Feb 0800-1500); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (23 Feb 0700-1700); Key West, Florida (24 Feb 0800-1600); Amber Cove, Dominican Republic (26 Feb 0800-1700); Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos (27 Feb 0800-1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (01 Mar 0800-1500); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (02 Mar a0700) Other ships in port are the Carnival Conquest (pier 04), Coral Princess (Pier 02) and Adventure Of The Seas (pier 29). The webcams are located at: https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com & https://www.ftlauderdalewebcam.com For the Sail a Way Addicts - the Koningsdam is scheduled to be in St Maarten. The website for it is located at https://www.portstmaartenwebcam.com Next up - a busy blue hulled beauty day in Port Everglades on February 17th with the Zuiderdam, Nieuw Statendam & Nieuw Amsterdam all schedule to sail.
  25. We are veterans of 58 cruises with 20 on HAL. Thought I'd give a little review of our Nov 24-Dec 1 cruise on the Oosterdam, we have now sailed on all the Vista class ships and the Oosterdam just became our favorite ship. The ship to us is just a little prettier than the other Vista ships, the decor was outstanding. The ship was spotless, probably the cleanest ship we have sailed on. I believe the ship is now 13 years old and is in great shape. Service everywhere on board was outstanding from the MDR to the cabin steward to the Ocean bar to guest relations to the Lido buffet. Embarkation and dis-embarkation were both a breeze. Kudos to Alvaro who was the main server in the Lido buffet line, very friendly with always a smile on his face. The food in the MDR and the Lido were to us the best food we have eaten on a ship. Can't comment on any of the specialty restaurants as we passed on them. Entertaiment was very good in the Mainstage with a very funny comedian/magician and another comedian. Production shows were very good. We have now seen BBC Planet Earth twice now and HAL needs to give us more entertainment and skip stuff we can see on on TV at home on the National Geographic channel. We love the 3 other entertainment venues as they always have great performers in BB Kings, Billboard On board and Lincoln Center. I'm not going to review the ports as the only place we left the ship was in St. Thomas as I have a thing about watches and always buy one in St. Thomas to add to my collection, St. Thomas is the greatest place on earth to bargain with the salespeople. San Juan is also a favorite of ours but we were just there in September so decided to stay on board. Could care less about Turk and Caicos. Our only problem on the cruise was an issue with hot water in our cabin, it was tepid until I complained on Sunday and we had hot water for 2 days with back to tepid most of the remaining time. Passengers in other staterooms on our deck had the same problem but everybody else we talked to had no problem. Any questions, feel free to ask.
