  1. This is my last "Bon Voyage" thread on behalf of Gma Pajama who will be back now to resume that role. I wish the following travelers a wonderful voyage to the world's northernmost hemisphere: RevNeal – Prinsendam – 23 Jul 10 – Top of the World seasooze – Prinsendam – 23 Jul 10 – Top of the World kapear – Zaandam – 23 Jul 10 – Alaska /Party of 10 BON VOYAGE!
  2. We recently returned from 42 days on the Prinsendam and decided to post a few comments in lieu of a review (perhaps we will write a detailed review at a later date). First lets talk of the good. The food in the dining room was nearly always excellent and far better then what we experienced on the Noordam during a cruise last year. The guest entertainers were all good but the Holland America productions sometimes felt like a high school musical. It is difficult to put on a real production show when you have a very small stage, sub-standard stage lighting, only 4 singers/dancers + 3 dancers, etc. This is a small ship and the productions are "small ship productions." Kudos to the fine small ships' orchestra (and its resourceful director...Oral) which did a good job despite having to labor without the help of any brass (HA removed most brass instruments from its Orchestras in a budget move). Now, we need to discuss the condition of the ship which is now 22 years old (it shows in many places). Yes, it is true that HA has pumped some money in the ship that can be noticed when seeing the new cabins, revamped bathrooms, etc. On the other hand, we also noticed worn carpeting (often excessive), elevators that often were out of order (there are only 4 elevators on the ship), peeling paint and rust in our cabin near our port holes (more about this later), and other more major issues. During our voyage one of the ships engines failed to start resulting in a delay embarking at New York and a further delay in Ft Lauderdale. The ships plumbing had major problems resulting in a total shut-down of the water on several ocassions as they replaced old pipes. We also noticed minor maintenance issues such as one of the 2 Lido ice machines being out of order and one of the rear Lido doors (to the outdoor patio) also not functioning. In both cases those items were broken when we boarded the ship on May 14 and were still broken when we disembarked on June 25. A ships officer told us that there were many other problems (behind the scenes) which often went unrepaired due to the difficulty in getting parts for older equipment. As to the cabins, many of our friends had major issues with their cabins including no hot water, and strange odors. In our case we booked an outside guarantee and ended-up in one of the cabins near the bow (deck 5) that had portholes instead of windows. Both of our reading lights were broken (they wielded one during the cruise and the weld held for one day) and there was a lot of peeling paint, rust and corrosion around one of our port holes. I only mention these issues to warn those who are used to newer cruise ships. Despite its many flaws, we truly did fall in love with this old ship. This is a vessel for those who love the old style smaller cruise ships and are capable of entertaining themselves during long voyages. The oft discussed question among many passengers was whether HA intended to pour money into this aging vessel...or was it to be put up for sale in the next few years. Hank
  3. No cabin # yet, we have a guarantee room Prinsendam July 15, 35 day. How does it work on a small ship with 835 people ? Do I have to wait till some one cancels? does it always happen ?? In a way that is sad I get there cabin because they can't go . It feels different compared to a 3000 passenger ship ..
  4. Live from the Prinsendam..so I apologize if this has been posted. we entered the Kiel Canal at 4 am and exit at Brunsbuttel at 2 pm. it is 10 am our time as I post. There is a live website if you want to see some of the canal sailing. according to the "today On Location", it is. http://www.kiel-canal.de
  5. Cant believe the Prinsendam could be this bad. PS this is not my review. http://www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/memberreview.cfm?EntryID=109508

  7. Will be on this ship for Christmas and would like to take small gift for steward. Does anyone know please whether they will be male or female. We have cruised on ships with men and ones with women - so far none with both genders.
  8. Just wondering if Prinsendam is one of the diesel-electric azipod-propelled ships or does she have engines driving the props directly?
  9. Looking for assistance from the Prinsendam Guru's in regards to a request for table selection. The Wife and I are looking for a table for two on "Fixed Seating" and can see that there is the main dining room plus a smaller area forward on the starboard side. From the layouts taken off this forum it appears the "tables for two", that are most separate by themselves are 162, 163,169, and 170 in the main room and numbers 7, 9, and 11 in the starboard front area. We live a very hectic life and really enjoy each others company on our cruises so am looking for your input on suggestions. Thanks in advance.
  10. I don't think I saw it posted here yet, except for one poster saying they booked a 2014 cruise. The new itineraries are out!! I was really disappointed as it looked that there was nothing new for us. But....the more I studied the Black Sea itinerary, I saw it included some very obscure and unusual ports in Greece, Turkey,Romania and even Bulgaria. The itinerary isn't just the typical Black Sea ports. Looks like HAL may have not lost us to Oceania or Azamara yet. (Actually, I decided that I didn't want to pay a lot more for all inclusive drinks anyway!!) Check it out, you guys!
  11. I'm looking at a cruise on the Prinsendam August 2013. I'm looking at an AA cabin (107 or 109) ...far forward on the Upper Promenade deck. They are over the showroom - will I have a probem with noise there? And are there concerns if it is a connecting cabin - vs. one that isn't? All info would be much appreciated. Thanks!
  12. How is she doing - anyone saiol on this lovely ship lately?
  13. My wife and I are booked on the Grand Mediterranean cruise on the Prinsendam next Spring and we are wondering about the gym. We try to use the gym nearly every day while cruising and the gym on the Prinsendam looks very small. Does it tend to get more crowded than the gyms on other HAL ships? We've been on most of the HAL fleet and crowding is usually not a big problem other than the very prime times in the gym. Is this also true for the Prinsendam or is it too small to acommodate the crowds? Thank you for your input.
  14. I was looking at the most recent Cruise Atlas. The price for our Sept 2 cruise is a lot higher, as many of the future cruises. Actually, the price for a superior seems to be a lesser value than the same size cabin on a luxury line. Am I seeing things or is HAL trying to make more bucks on Prinsendam???

  16. On the other 5 HAL cruises I've taken (Caribbean, Europe) HAL has excursions in each port. On the Prinsendam cruise a few of us are taking this summer..they have posted excursions for only three ports, not the other 5. Is this normal? Does HAL not offer ship excursions in places such as Waterford?
  17. Does anyone have thoughts and or photos of this cabin? Thanks
  18. Hello any news about the June 23 cruise and suggestions Joan:)
  19. Does anyone know where the Prinsendam docks in Dublin, Ireland? We will be on a cruise in a few weeks that calls on Dublin. We have arranged a private car pick up and want to let them know where to find us. Thanks so much for your help.

  21. For those who've been there, what's not to miss in Iceland? We've 5 stops. Tips?
  22. Has anyone stayed in an Aft stateroom on the Prinsendam? and if so is it have any drawbacks to the aft rooms such as noise etc etc...:p Or is it a good choice for a baltic cruise Thanks CC
  23. Hello. This is my first day on CruiseCritic. Not sure yet how it all works. We have just booked the S American Grand Voyage that leaves from Ft. Lauderdale on Jan 4, 2012. Would like to hook up with others on this trip. We have not been on HAL before. But the itinerary beckoned to us. As did the timing, since we will miss winter in the US...exactly our plan... My husband and I are retired seniors in our 70s, love to travel. Last trip was a month in Burma, with two weeks sailing the Irrawaddy with the Pandaw Line, our very favorite ship so far.
  24. We are considering a cruise on the Prinsendam. We would like to know how the ship "rides" in less than perfect seas. More specifically, how does it compare to the Vista class ships (i.e., Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, Westerdam, Noordam, Eurodam & Nieuw Amsterdam)? Any and all opinions are greatly appreciated. Thank you!
  25. We are planning to book on the Prinsendam for the "Kiel & Baltic Treasures" on July 1, 2013. After scouring the internet for cabin recommendations, I am totally confused. I am thinking of a cabin with a verandah (cat. A, AA, or AB). Cabins AB218-224 were favorably reviewed. But elsewhere someone said they were very noisy from propeller sounds and water ran from the next deck up. The Upper Promenade deck (deck 5) seemed OK - but another review said avoid this completely because of noise from the lower deck (Promenade). We have no special requirements. I will book early and would like to select a specific cabin, knowing it will be OK. Can you make a recommendation? Thanks!
