  2. Tale of woe. Our dear friends and we shared a dream of sailing on an itinerary that includes St. Petersburg (Russia, not Florida). Because of scheduling problems our dream got deferred to September 2019. It would have been our first cruise on the Prinsendam, and I got over the sticker shock when valiant CCers explained the economics of having a smaller base on which to spread the high non-variable fixed costs. Well, now I learn that as of September 2019 the Prinsendam will have been retired from the HAL fleet, and that the cruise we had had our eye on is now scheduled, with a modified itinerary, for the Rotterdam. Concerns: 1. The cruise fares are still eye-poppingly high. This can't be on account of the fixed-cost analysis that obtained for Pdam, so is this just a question of supply & demand? Should we roll the dice by waiting six months (or so) to see if the prices come down to a more attractive level? 2. This board is full of lamentations about Rotterdam. In the last drydock refurbishment, it is said, the Rotterdam got mutilated, particularly in her aft end. One critic even referred to her as the "Rottendam"! Having never experienced her in her prior, pristine incarnation, how seriously should I take the criticisms? I've also seen references to Rotterdam as (together with Amsterdam) "the co-flagship of the fleet," which makes me think it can't be too shabby! 3. The HAL website does not show any verandah categories of cabin. Instead, we are offered either a "lanai" stateroom or a vista suite. The vista suite offers a verandah (plus, as a suite, double Mariners points!) but the price is beyond our budget (see point #1 above). The lanai stateroom has no verandah but instead opens out onto the Promenade deck. As the philosopher said: huh? Are there no verandah cabins on Rotterdam? or have they all been sold out? I will welcome your thoughts and advice. Should we look elsewhere?
  3. When Rotterdam VI was in the planning/building stages, she was given engines that would provide her with higher speeds than other cruise ships of her time could achieve. She was built for long range cruises whose ocean distances, I assume, could be sailed more quickly than other vessels. She did sail on some long distance cruises earlier in her career, covering much of King Neptune's domain. But now, not so much. Her sailing distances seem to be much less more often than not. (A waste of the ship's potential?) M.S. Amsterdam has assumed my expected role for the Rotterdam as HAL's Grand World Voyage ship. Yet, the Amsterdam's only advantage over the Rotterdam is her azipods. It is not for her engines or the speed for which she is capable. It's those pods that seemed to make the difference. I think that marine engine technology changes are probably responsible for this demotion in "world cruise status" for the successor of Rotterdam V, but why could such not be anticipated prior to Amsterdam's building order?
  4. Hello - can anyone help with 10/2019 docking location of the Rotterdam in Bordeaux? There seem to be multiple locations; some in the city, others far away. I've searched the internet, the HAL website and CC with no results. Thanks for your help.

  6. Does anyone know where the Rotterdam Roll Call for the July 1, 2019 cruise disappeared to -- it is Baltic and Spitsbergen 34 day trip? The Baltic trip was supposed to be on the Prinsendam but since it was sold.....it moved to the Rotterdam. Please help! Thanks
  7. I don't want to step on Scrapnana's or Boytjie's toes but with Cruise Critic having been down overnight I don't think they do a lot of morning posting so here goes. We have Nieuw Amsterdam on a Malt Shop Memories charter 7-day cruise to Grand Turk, San Juan, and St. Kitts. She came in really early this morning. Zuiderdam is 10-day Partial Panama Canal cruise to Half Moon Cay, Aruba, Curacao, the canal, Colon, and Puerto Limon. She came in later this morning. Also in port are Anthem of the Seas and Celebrity Reflection (both briefly), Carnival Conquest, and Adventure of the Seas. In Tampa the Rotterdam leaves at 5 for a 14-night Southern Caribbean cruise to San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Johns, St. Lucia, Aruba, Curacao, and Grand Cayman. Also in port are NCL Pearl and Carnival Miracle. The Tampa webcam is http://portttampawebcam.com and for Ft. Lauderdale http://ftlauderdalewebcam.com and http://portevergladeswebcam.com
  8. Dear Dad really wants to sail on an itinerary on this ship but it's age makes me nervous after back to back cruises on the Eurodam. I'm having trouble finding current information and pictures, when was it last dry docked? Any future plans to update the ship? I can deal with wear n tear, not looking for perfection, just general accolades about the ship if you have any to pass along. Thank you!
  9. As we sailed under the Verrazano Bridge after leaving Cape Liberty around 4pm Sunday Oct 21st, I saw the Rotterdam headed UP the river, towards NY. I thought it was unusual to see a ship headed to port so late in the day. Curious as to what the itinerary was...
  10. Hi, STILL looking at this Western Caribbean cruise aboard the Rotterdam that includes Santo Tomas de Castilla. Have some of you been to this port? What did you think of it and what did you do? This is one of few Caribbean ports that I haven't been to so that's an attraction in itself. Any info you can tell me will be appreciated!
  11. I tried to search on the port boards but couldn't find what I was looking for. Does anyone have a suggestion for post cruise transportation from the Port at Rotterdam to the airport in Amsterdam? We have a 2:30 flight. Are ship transfers ($39 pp x 2 people) a good option? Thank you!
  12. We are on the Rotterdam next week and were wondering who the piano player in the piano bar may be.
  13. Any one know from their personal experience what the large "blank" space on deck plan for the Rotterdam adjacent to cabins 2574, 2566, 2567 and 2570. Worried about noise and vibration, etc?
  14. Does anyone know whether currently Rotterdam LP OV rooms have showers or tubs? Is there any way to find out? Called HAL but the rep wasn't sure there is a sure way. It will be a crucial deciding factor for a member of my family.
  15. If I could hear from anyone who has actually done this I would appreciate it. I need to be in constant contact with my parents back in FL so I am trying to ready myself for how to use my phone over the WIFI on board the ship on sea days and not in port. I know there will be some apps not supported; like Skype, but what about calling through "What's App"? Is that supported? It would seem this can be done if I am reading various posts. Can someone give me some kind of instruction on this so I know what to do in advance and what I need to do on the ship?
  16. We have a room on hold so only a few days to choose......I cannot find any info on this room K10016 anywhere. Very vague info on the HAL website. Hard to tell which inside rooms have which configs. Thanks everyone!
