  1. My husband and I will be on the Veendam next week. Our second sailing on her in less than 12 months. Our first was to Cuba in April. We loved the size of the ship and the HAL staff. We booked the same cabin as we liked the location in April. I have a couple of questions for anyone that is currently on the Veendam or recently off the ship. What are the current movies? Have you had success upgrading the SPB with Explore 4 to the Elite Beverage Package? Will the mid-level unlimited wi-fi package permit words with friends games? Thank you. BaltimoreCruise
  2. About to book the 10 day holiday Cuba cruise on Veendam. Trying to select an oceanview room. We do not like rooms on the promenade deck so our options are limited to A and Main deck. Considering G515/516 or G702/707 all at the front of the ship. The 515/516 rooms look a little smaller than most but are on a floor sandwiched between rooms and 702/707 look larger but are on a lower deck and obviously closer to engines etc. So really torn here. Also seen some negative reviews on Veendam later so that was other concern, but this itinerary looks perfect for us for Christmas Really would appreciate your thoughts as trying to book today or tomorrow.
  3. Is there anyone on board the Veendam now she is out of dry dock who can advise what work was done? I am on her for a Mediterranean cruise in June and just hoping they haven’t made and significant changes to the layout. If anyone has a photo of a daily schedule from the first post dry dock cruise that would be wonderfully helpful too.

  7. I have friends sailing on the April TA on the Veendam and thought I'd give her some magnetic clips and hooks for their "stuff". I'd like to know, though, if the walls are metal so the magnets will hold. Thanks very much ! Linda T.
  8. I'm looking at booking the Veendam for a Venice to Barcelona cruise, although we already have a Barcelona to Venice cruise booked on the Celebrity Constellation. The primary reasons are that we like HAL's service, the way they handle allergies, and better buffet and lido deck experiences. For my son, however, he prefers HAL for their in-room TV programming. Does anyone know whether the Veendam has been upgraded to the on-demand TV systems? If not, do they still have DVD players in the rooms and DVDs for checkout at Guest Services? Thanks!
  9. We will be sailing on the Oct. 30th Cuba cruise with an overnight in Havana. Curious if the casino will be open that evening? We did a similar cruise on Carnival last year and the casino was closed on the overnight Havana.
  10. Hello everybody, I learned that Veendam is having a refurbishment this April. Any news what is going to be done? Thanks in advance!
  11. We are considering a seven night cruise to NE/Canada this fall. Both ships have the same itinerary between Montreal and Boston. I only see small differences in the ships. We prefer a balcony or small (cheap) suite. There's some difference there. Possibly an aft cabin? Same restaurants? Bars? Coffee/Crow's nest? We are not interested in the casino. If you have sailed on both what is really different?
  12. So I see a really unique cruise to Norway early June of 2020. I wish Hal was using a newer ship but they are not. The ports look really interesting. I am unsure of going on oldest ship in fleet from Amsterdam given recent reviews. Unsure if ship is up for sale and if any renovations are planned. I welcome any and all comments and advice. I have been to Norway once having seen Bergen and Alesund and Geiranger. Too bad this cruise won't go to Oslo. Is Oslo worth seeing? Thanks in advance for any help. I am intrested in N Statendam but some ports not doing what Veendam is doimg.
  13. VEENDAM, May 16th, from Naples. In order to take advantage of the small group price of 69euros per person, we need 4 or 6 other cruisers to join our tour, Pompeii Sorrento, Amalfi Coast on May 16th out of Naples. We are booked with ItalyTour. See details of tour at https://Italytours.eu. if you are interested, please email me at faithc143@gmail.com and/ or contact them directly mentioning my name,Thanking you in advance. Faith
  14. Is it true that the self-serve laundry rooms are going to be removed during Veendam’s upcoming April dry dock? I am going on a 12 day Mediterranean cruise on the Veendam in June and I was going to pack enough clothes for half of the days and do laundry on board. If I understand correctly, my other options would be unlimited laundry ($9/day or $108 for 12 days) or a single bag ($30). Is this correct?
  15. We are considering a cruise on the Veendam. It has been a while since we have been on a smallish HAL ship. What's going to be done during the upcoming drydock? On demand TV? High-sided tubs replaced with walk-in showers or lower sided tubs? Updated decor? I would appreciate any info someone "in the know" could provide. Thanks!
  16. Hi, Veendam will be in Dry Dock 04/14 - 04/21. How can I found out what changes are being done? Is there a way to find out? I have booked the Veendam after the drydock and would like to know. Thanks in advance, Fellow HAL cruisers!!
  17. Before you get to excited about Veendam, she will only be in port to 1:00 (or at least that is her scheduled departure time) as she is headed to Freeport for dry dock. She should be arriving to pier 19 at 5:15 am. Oosterdam will be at pier 26 from 5:30-4:45. She is headed out on a 7-day Tropical Caribbean cruise. Key West, Florida (07 Apr 0800-1600); Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos (09 Apr 0800-1700); Amber Cove, Dominican Republic (10 Apr 0800-1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (12 Apr 0800-1500); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (13 Apr a0700) Also in port are Independence OTS at pier 18 from 0615-1630, Crown Princess at pier 4 from 0545-1600, Celebrity Infinity at pier 25 frim 0600-1600, and Caribbean Princess at pier 2 from 0500-2000 (although one source has her leaving at 1700). The PTZtv webcams can be found at https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/ and https://www.ftlauderdalewebcam.com/ . Eurodam will be in San Diego from 0700-1700 doing a 7-day Mexican Riviera cruise. Next up: Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam on April 7.
  18. I visited Cienfuegos on the Veendam on 12/15/18 and wanted to let people know what happens when you have a private tour arranged for this port. We were scheduled to be in Cienfuegoes from 8am - 5pm. It was announced the day before our arrival that people booked on HAL shore excursions would be allowed on the tenders first, starting at 8am. Passengers booked on a private tour (or visiting Cienfuegos on their own) would receive tender ticket staring at 9am. This was exactly what happened. I was able to get group 1 tender tickets at 9am but they did not call group 1 until 9:20am. We arrived at the dock right before 10am. If you book a private guide then you will need to leave the gated area and walk down the road a bit to a small park. This is where you will find the private guides. We were also told that the last tender for independent travelers was at 3:30pm back to the ship. Space might not be available on later tenders for independent passengers. The captain announced twice that he would only wait for people booked on a HAL shore excursion. Our private tour was great but lunch did not work out. We were supposed to have lunch as part of the tour. We did not arrive at the restaurant until 2:00pm where we proceeded to wait for a table. I asked the guide when that might happen. He said an hour or so since they only had one cook! Since we had to make the 3:30 tender back to the ship, we told him to skip lunch. Conclusion: I think for Cienfuegos I would book a HAL tour for a future trip. Cuba was fascinating and I cannot wait to go back.
  19. Just wondering whether anybody has cruised on the Veendam lately and if so, what was the overall experience like? Cheers Rick

  21. I'm deciding between a main deck o/v, and a lower promenade lanai on Veendam. I've been reading some older posts from when the lanai cabins were new, so I'm wondering if, as more people have tried them, I can hear more opinions. I like o/v cabins on lower decks to minimize movement and I do like having the ocean right outside my window. It's as if I'm really "on" the water. The lanai cabin would give me wonderful access to the promenade, where I tend to spend more time than the sunny pool decks. I like the shade and hearing the water against the hull. So I guess my questions are, if I get the o/v, will I still be able to find a deck chair on the promenade, and if I get a lanai, will the feeling be much different since I have to look out across the promenade to see water? I understand I'd have to close the curtains at night if I want privacy in the lanai, but I love the idea of poking my head out first thing in the morning for some fresh air. I think the price difference is about $400 US for 12 nights. Thank you for any opinions and insights. This will be my first time on HAL.
  22. Hi, My wife and myself are cruising to the Eastern Caribbean & Cuba for 14 days in December,2019. I have checked out some HAL tours to Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk, San Juan and St Thomas and would like to compare those tours with any private tours people have taken to those places. Any feedback would really be appreciated. Thanks. Rick
  23. It’s a solo performance today - Just one ship in Port Everglades for this one and fortunately for all of us, it’s a blue hulled beauty - ms Veendam. She is doing the 11 day Authentic Cuba and should be at pier 26: Fort Lauderdale, Florida (26 Mar d1700); Cozumel, Mexico (28 Mar 0800-1700); Belize City, Belize (29 Mar 0800-1700); Roatan, Honduras (30 Mar 0800-1700); Cienfuegos, Cuba (01 Apr 0800-1700); George Town, Grand Cayman (02 Apr 0800-1700); Ocho Rios, Jamaica (03 Apr 0800-1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (05 Apr 0800-1600); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (06 Apr a0800) The webcams are located at https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com & https://www.ftlauderdalewebcam.com This is my farewell as the OP of the Sail a Way threads and I thank you all for your patience as I learned my way around. Kathi (Scrapnana) will be returning to start the Sail a Way threads and carry on the tradition. Next up from what I can see - Nieuw Statendam in Port Everglades & Rotterdam in Tampa on March 31st.
  24. We just got back from a 10 day cruise on the Veendam. The stops were Havana, Cienfuegos, Belize, Cozumel, and Grand Cayman. Now I would like to give you a completely "Unbiased Opinion" of the whole kit and kaboodle. Iam 68 and my wife 67 and we have been on atleast 15 cruises thru out our lifetime. The Veendam is an old ship and its starting to show just a little. Generally speaking we had a nice time but I would start by saying for us CUBA is a ONCE IN A LIFETIME STOP. Now granted thats just us but after taking a 8 Hour Tour of Havana and a 5 Hour Tour of the other city on the southside of the Island I would not go back again. You probably know that Cuba is extremely poor and it showed. The old classic cars in Havana were interesting but you can only look at just so many 1956 Chevys. LOL. We did not find the other stops all that interesting. Now onto the ship itself. Breakfast and lunch were always good and we really enjoyed that. The sit down more formal meals in the evening were quite dissapointing. We had taken a Holland America cruise about 4 years ago and lots have changed since then. Here are my biggest complaints in no particular order. Evening meals were very dissapointing. Didn't care for most of the offerings and the servings were very small. The internet was "INCREDIBLY SLOW" or sometimes just plain didn't work at all. The TV in the room was like a computer screen about 23" screen. We were on the Verandah Deck #9. It was sold to us as their version of a "Mini Suite". Ha, now thats a real laugher. It was 225 square feet and like being in a "SARDINE CAN" for 10 days. My wife was extremely dissapointed in the room itself. Just no room for your "stuff" if you know what I mean. Back to the TV. I think they got about 7 channels in total and you could watch a movie or you could watch MSNBC (for the Democrats) or you could watch FOX NEWS (for the Republicans). Not trying to be funny but the TV channel selections were absolutely HORRIBLE. We spent alot of money for this cruise and I don't know if Iam allowed to give the amount but with the so called mini suite, airfare, insurance, taxes, extra expense for their "Built in Tips Program", drinks, shore excursions, etc etc etc I truly spent alot of $$$$$$$. If Iam allowed to post it I will gladly do so. Was the whole enchilada worth it?????? Definitely NOT. We are going to be much more picky on our next cruise/vacation that I can assure you. THANK YOU.
  25. As we have only sailed the Noordam and Koningsdam would like to hear from the experts on the differences between the Veendam and Prinsendam. We are looking at the itineraries from South America back to Florida through the Amazon. The Veendam leaves from Rio which is our preference and is a shorter cruise. Our understanding is the Prinsendam is a better ship and there is a very good rate on the inside cabins at the moment, also our friend will be working on the Prinsendam. The problem with the P is it leaves from BA and we would have to get there from Rio and it would mean less time on land in Brazil. We are in our early 40’s and like a few drinks and a fun time, what will the crowds be like on these longer ships? The prices are good and we could then take a TA to Europe afterwards, the alternative is to spend a bit more and try an Azamara cruise direct from Rio to Europe. Appreciate any thoughts as concerned by the recent reviews of the Veendam.
