  1. We will be on the Veendam for the first time in a couple of weeks. I was looking over the deck plans and wondered about some of the outdoor decks/observation areas. With an inside cabin, we will be looking for places to be outdoors for sea days and sail away, etc. Can anyone give me a little more information on the following: 1. Is the area at the front of the gym easily accessible? Also, how about the deck above the Crow's Nest. I don't see it on the deck plan, but from looking at photos, it seems it is open for viewing. (Trying to avoid areas surrounded by glass but this might be pretty windy.) 2. Curious about the Retreat Area. I see there is a movie screen. Is it used? We have spent quite a few days on the Zaandam and loved the deck chairs on the Lower Promenade deck. Since the Veendam has Lanai cabins I'm guessing there won't be many chairs available there and I will be hanging out at the Retreat instead. Any other advice or hints for a first time Veendam cruiser?

  7. Need information/answers from recent (December+January) Veendam cruisers: Was the Dining Room open for lunch on boarding day? (We board 2/5) How was the Entertainment and Daily Activities? Was the Ship in good condition? Any other pertinent info you want to share before we board?
  8. We haven't sailed the Veendam in a while. We love the Lincoln Center experience on the larger ships, the venue and the musicians. Any information on the Veendam players for summer 2020 would be greatly appreciated.
  9. Does anyone know if It is offered and, if so, is there a fee? Many thanks.
  10. I've been researching and reading, because what else is there to do pre-cruise during winter in Vermont when you don't ski? And I've seem various reviews on the Veendam. We are scheduled for the February 5th sailing which I've been told was originally scheduled to go to Cuba. It is now a 7 day Eastern Caribbean cruise which has lost it's Half Moon Cay day. So, my question is this, recent guests of the Veendam, what is your opinion of the "Retreat" aft area, the current entertainment and the food in the MDR? This will be my 3rd cruise on the Veendam and she always impresses, but the recent reviews label her as a "tired ship worthy of all the Senior Citizen guests" Your honest opinions are welcome please!

  12. HAL smoking policy doesn't say specifically where it is on the Veendam. Just off the Koningsdam and it had a large, comfortable area on the Lido Deck that was covered and was a very popular gathering place all day. We met some very nice people and it was a friendly area to relax.
  13. OVERVIEW: Like any 7-day cruise, this cruise went by way too fast. When you are being spoiled by great food, good service, sunshine, and friendly new acquaintances, TIME FLIES. Meanwhile, while we were gone, our home town experienced a winter storm with high-winds. They received over five feet of new snow, lost power, water, and sewer services, and had to help provide for hundreds of stranded travelers because the roads were closed on both ends of the town. Skykomish only has a population of about 200, so this was quite an event. Oblivious, to all that was transpiring at home, we · relaxed during a sea day, · floated down the Martha Brea river near Ocho Rios, · swam with dolphins in Georgetown, Grand Cayman, · toured some Mayan ruins on Cozumel Island, · and went snorkeling from a catamaran in Key West. Being on this cruise was a good break from winter for us.

  15. Can anybody share their experience in a Lanai room? Is the room smaller? Are there two deck chairs outside them? Do other passengers use these chairs?
  16. I give up trying to search older posts for comments about this specific cabin...have checked out cruise deck plans and have “big picture” info but first hand feedback would be great! Thanks...
  17. Hi, I am hoping a recent Veendam cruiser might know where the ship normally docks in St. Thomas. Thanks.
  18. Does the Veendam have wall mounted large TV's or the smaller desk top models? Any recent photo's would be great.
  19. What kinds of activities are offered on sea days on veendam? Do they have a daily paper listing them? Thanks.

  21. Can you get to the Observation deck on the Lido deck on the Veendam during departure and at sea. Also same question for the Veranda deck forward?. Thanks, floridacruisers
  22. We just finished our first HAL cruise, a week on the Nieuw Amsterdam. Already looking to book our next. Because I work for a large university, we can only really travel from about 12/12/20 to 01/10/21. We travel with four of our youngest children(ages 7-17) and usually bring one or two extra with us, so cost is definitely a factor. We LOVED Half Moon Cay. We don't like the itinerary on the Nieuw Amsterdam the week we are looking at (alas, no HMC!); none of us have ever been to any of the ports that the Veendam will sail to that week (Trujillo Honduras, Costa Maya Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize). We prefer smaller, quieter, more intimate ships. We don't smoke though and really appreciated not having to walk through a smoky casino on the HAL-NA. Our children don't need any activities to be entertained. Veendam has some very bad reviews. That isn't always truth, so we're looking for feedback. We just had four interior cabins on the Verandah deck of the Veendam held. Not sure if that was a good plan or not; we have a day or two to decide...

  24. Thanks in part to an issue with my youngest kitten I purchased the internet plan. I’ll do my best to report in on this holiday adventure. We originally booked this cruise when it was going to Cuba. After we booked air travel to Cuba was restricted and HAL had to come up with a new itinerary. In my opinion they did a good job and we decided to go with the flow. Just before Thanksgiving we took a Neptune suite upsell that was a good deal to us. We flew out of Boston yesterday and had a slight delay in leaving thanks to a snow/ice storm. We made it to FLL by noon. This served as a reminder of why we fly in the day before. We stayed at the Four Point Sheraton. Not a great hotel but it does offer a shuttle from the airport and is close to drugstores, good restaurants and Total Wine. Using points made it an easy choice. Check in today was very easy. The shuttle arrived early and we got to the port very quickly. This time they checked you off of a list before going through security. Not sure what prompted this change. Lunch in the MDR was nice, although slower than what we expected. Not that we we’re in a rush. We did have an issue setting up the Navigator. Somehow my credentials pulled up DH’s details, but showed my mariner number. When he signed in he got his details but my mariner number. After some investigation with the concierge we discovered that both our emails were attached to DH’s account. Once that was corrected all worked well. The Veendam upgraded to the new system last week. Looking forward to sail away from our balcony, 016.
  25. We have a transatlantic booked on the Veendam for October 2020. It was for 17 days and now it is 14 days and they cut 3 ports out of the itinerary. Instead of ending in Ft. Lauderdale it now ends in Tampa. I checked the cruises after the transatlantic and there are no other cruises being offered on the Veendam. So I was wondering is the Veendam the next ship being retired?
