  1. Veendam was in Dry Dock in April. Did you see any changes? I liked the Veendam when on her a few years ago When you booked you didn't see the ship was smaller and elevators were only at the front and back. No middle ones. Lido is small but fine, I like the Dive-In. All cruise lines have their Production Shows running for years. I'm glad you liked some things on your cruise.
  2. We just got off a 12 day cruise on the Veendam.........Of all of the HAL ships we've been on, this is the one that we liked the LEAST and our plan is to never cruise on her again. We find the dead end hallways caused by the galley to be very annoying. The elevators are too few & too slow. The Lido is small, chaotic, and generally more "cafeteria-oid" than any other Lido we've experienced. Aft cabins as far up as the 6th floor [that we experienced] are horridly noisy during docking and experience awful odor from the smokestack should the wind be blowing at the back of the ship. On this voyage, menus seemed limited and uninspired. Lido food for lunch was repetitive and very meh. The captain & EXC guide were wonderful, the cruise director was just OK. Production shows were the same 3 we've seen for TWO YEARS. Same BBC movie, too. Single night entertainers were great [and new].
  3. Harrumph. There's a lot more places the Prinsendam went to that the Veendam can't than just the Kiel Canal. HAL lost a lot of ports when the Prinsendam left the fleet. By no stretch of the imagination can the Veendam be called the 'new Prinsendam'.
  4. According to our Future Cruise Consultant here on the Amsterdam, Veendam is to be the new Prinsendam. She will be taking over most of the Elegant Explorer’s itineraries, except she can’t do the Kiel Canal. I’m not sure if she will be doing any “Grands”.
  5. Ruth is correct (once again). Look at the itinerary for when you want to go. Then consider pricing. That aft pool thing was goofy at the time, but it works now. There is water, about 3" deep with loungers there. We have been on Veendam a couple of times and enjoy the smaller ship feel that one gets on that class of ships. You don't wear yourself out getting from one end of the ship to the other. Nice library with a great coffee bar experience. Jim
  6. Hello can anyone give me info on and cabins H387 and HH 385 on the Veendam what do you see when you look out the window? Also what is the condition of the cabins because the reviews are not so good? Thank you in advance for your help.

  8. Hi all. I was hoping some of you can answer some questions for us. We absolutely LOVE cruising and have been doing so for over 45 years all in Caribbean but we have never sailed on Holland America and are looking at the VEENDAM. I am interested in December 28th sailing. But the reviews I am reading are so disappointing. Also does anyone have any reviews specifically on lower promenade H or HH? I know they say fully obstructed or partial obstructed but was hoping someone stayed in one and got a glimpse of the water. Thanks all in advance for your help!!!

Not quite accurate. The Rotterdam and Veendam both have NY Pizza
  11. I was on the HAL Veendam a couple of weeks ago & Sirena was in most ports with us. Since I am sailing her for the first time in December, I took the opportunity to ask passengers from her if they liked the ship. I really didn't hear any negative comments.

  13. 2 favorites, first one 1999 on the R1 sailing from Istanbul where we stayed 3 days and 2 nights and then visited Ephesus, Rhodes, Crete, Santorini and finishing up in Athens for 2 1/2 days. Very special time in Athens as I touched bases with my roots meeting a bunch of Aunts, Uncles and Cousins who wined and dined us from 10pm to 2am at a beautiful outdoor restaurant on a hill with a great view of Athens. In 2007, we sailed on the Veendam from Venice round trip to Messina, Rome, Florence, Pisa, Monoco, Corsica, Naples (Sorrento, Pompeii) and Dubrovnik. Great cruise with so many things to see and really not enough time. In Rome and Florence we had tours that started with the bus trip at 7am and didn't make it back to the ship until 830pm just in time to grab dinner in the buffet.

  15. Two totally different itineraries. One is crossing the pond with some intriguing ports (ideal time to visit Newfoundland) & the other is exploring the Great Land and all of it’s scenery and wonders. No matter which itinerary our CC friends have chosen, we hope they enjoy every moment of their time in port and on board and, of course, we wish them safe travels, fair winds and smooth seas. Bon Voyage to Veendam - 12 day Voyage of the Explorers: JR42 ksmaxey & DW Bon Voyage to Amsterdam - 14 day Great Alaskan Explorer: StLouisCruisers - have a great 50th wedding anniversary celebration on board Av8rix Bon Voyage everyone!!!!!! Have a great cruise and a WONDERFUL time!!!!!

  17. A Grand Voyage is like a world cruise but shorter. Ours was 82 days Los Angeles - Los Angeles around the Pacific Rim. You could buy segments or do the entire cruise with incentives similar to a world cruise. The food was good (They had upped the food budget). The desserts were lacking which means that I did not gain weight. Sushi, salad bowl, Asian soup bowl freshly prepared in the buffet in addition to American standards. They had berries for breakfast! The destination experts were excellent as was the excursion staff. It was 3 steps up from our previous b2b on the MS Veendam. We did an Azamara cruise around Japan, booked it for the itinerary a few months later. The food was really good, certainly more varied and sophisticated than on HAL. The excursion staff was inexperienced; the expert was a dud with 3 basic factual errors in the first 30 minutes of his first talk on Japan. I think this can happen on any line, but we often don't know the destination well enough to notice. We were looking at Oceania's world cruise. It's a bit too long for us and I don't like the cramped bathrooms of the standard balcony cabins of the R ships. As to passengers, I found most Oceania passengers easy going, but I also met extremely demanding people.

  20. You see both, regardless of the direction. It's just the impression each makes after seeing Antarctica itself is different. Whatever comes after Antarctica suffers in comparison to coming before it. On one of my trips there I was up 33 hours coming home. Another trip was 39 hours (delayed flights). 'Grueling' is an understatement. I would be concerned about a larger ship acting as a wind sail if caught in a storm crossing the 'Drake Shake'. I've done that cruise on the Ryndam, Rotterdam, and Veendam, and we had some pretty rough seas on each of them. But even a friend who always wears a patch thought it wasn't so bad.
  21. I really like the Vista class ships (Westerdam) and have done the Zuiderdam and Oosterdam within the last year. We sailed the Veendam in Alaska in 2009 and are booked again on the Veendam in January 2020 for the Caribbean. The Veendam is a very nice ship but I think I would prefer a little larger ship under me for Antarctica and the Drake Passage. I am reserving comment for the Pinnacle class Nieuw Statendam that we sail in October.
  22. Thank you I Like Vacation. That link is very helpful! We are already booked up for 2020. I guess we would need to decide if we want to experience Antarctica on the Westerdam size. That is a significant difference from the Veendam. On the other hand there are Balcony cabins rather than jumping to a suite for your own outdoor space. Not sure how much that would matter in Antarctica.
  23. I am curious if there is a preferred direction on this route, or any of the other SA itineraries that travel Argentina-Chile route. Good to know that the new new laws will go into effect late 2021. We have been contemplating whether to take the traditional SA routing or adding on the Antarctica piece, and whether to do Antarctica on HAL or expedition. This does make for a greater sense of urgency in the decision, so I appreciate the information in just looking at 2021 itineraries I noticed that the Westerdam vs Veendam will be sailing the route, and only in Nov/Dec will the 22 day sail. I would much prefer the smaller Veendam.
  24. From what I've read here and seen from looking at deck plans, Spa cabins tend to be smaller than other "similar" cabins. When they added the spa balconies to Veendam or one of the smaller ships, someone who had one said yes, there's a yoga mat but not enough space to unroll it! The important thing to note is that the spa cabin does not include a spa pass. It's mostly about being near the spa and fitness center.
