  1. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING - Updated May 9th, 2019 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. This week’s additions and changes are in BOLD and highlighted in aqua (sea colours). 2. I should have added that if we had booked the VO lower class Deluxe Veranda Cabin, DV category, the cruise fare would have been less than the Veendam Vista Suite by several hundred dollars. The Vista Suite on the Veendam is not really a suite, more like a veranda cabin on most other lines.

  6. I agree, we are booked on a Viking Ocean cruise next year from Venice to Athens in a Penthouse Veranda Cabin cat. PV1. When we compared a similar itinerary on the Veendam for a Vista Class cabin, by the time we added in all the all inclusive items from VO to the Veendam cost there was less than $200pp difference. Add in no kids, no casino full of smoke, no pesky photographers, no nickel and diming, and no phony dressing up Gala nights, the smaller much newer VO ship was a much better deal in our opinion.
  7. I feel very sorry for those of you sailing on the Veendam who made final payment before the April warning was published. You were stuck and all you could do was hope things turned out OK. We canceled our Veendam cruise within hours of the warning. I was able to book a cheaper and longer cruise on the Crown Princess that stopped in some of our favorite ports. We would have preferred to sail to Cuba. Cuba caught my interest after reading Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea so many years ago. We just put off cruising there for too long because we didn’t like the ships that sailed to Cuba. Now we’re like many of you hoping things work out and we get there by ship someday soon. The Caribbean had gotten boring to us and wrote it off for years but decided to do a Caribbean Cruise in Jan. I decided we would do things we had never done before and we did. The cruise turned out to be one of our favorites....we did a Jose Quervo tasting in Cozumel....I don’t normally drink....a cooking class in Ocho Rios.....I’m not a great cook, walked among the tree tops in Roatan....went to the Mayan Ruins in Costa Maya.......and an Escape Room in the Cayman Islands. To those of you who are stuck with a non Cuba Cruise step outside the box and try something different. Make some sweet lemonade out of the sour lemons.
  8. Interesting; The four of us were scheduled on the Veendam Cuba itinerary 3/4 - 3/11/2020. Prior to the itinerary change and lowered price announcement yesterday, our TA was assured that the two perks we received with the original booking would be retained. Today, however, HAL says NO perks just the $100 OBC and lower cruise price, however we are welcome to add the two perks, therefore basically wiping out the lower price savings. Our solution is simple - cancel with HAL and rebook similar cruise with X at a similar price plus two perks and OBC from our TA.I suspect this particular cruise will have plenty of cabins available, including our two!
  9. Veendam's SECO Alex inbound to Cartagena, portable radio in hand to communicate with the staff captain or captain on the bridge. Veendam's gangway is positioned partially outside, ready to be landed upon command from the bridge. The yellow lines on each side connect to the "bridle" with which the gangway can be lifted or lowered

  11. We are booked on the Veendam Authentic Cuba cruise on Oct. 30th. Carnival is offering full refunds on their Cuba cruises (posted today) and I hope Holland does, too. The only reason we booked the cruise was because it had two Cuba destinations and we only got to do Havana on our Carnival cruise to Cuba last year. We have the Nieuw Statendam booked for Dec. 1st, so losing the Veendam won't be a hardship (no pun intended) to our cruising schedule this year.
  12. If they re-assign the Veendam, then home port her in Tampa. Since the sale of the Prinsendam was announced, the Rotterdam was pulled from Tampa and there are no HAL ships in Tampa for the future. Tampa needs a HAL ship to be home ported there, and the Veendam would be perfect.
  13. I'm looking at booking the Veendam for a Venice to Barcelona cruise, although we already have a Barcelona to Venice cruise booked on the Celebrity Constellation. The primary reasons are that we like HAL's service, the way they handle allergies, and better buffet and lido deck experiences. For my son, however, he prefers HAL for their in-room TV programming. Does anyone know whether the Veendam has been upgraded to the on-demand TV systems? If not, do they still have DVD players in the rooms and DVDs for checkout at Guest Services? Thanks!
  14. Day P68, Wednesday, March 13, 2019, Alter Do Chao, Brazil I was on deck early and got in about 1 ½ miles of walking before the deck was closed to prepare the tenders for launching. I went back out around sunrise (6:45) and it was pouring rain. About that time I also heard the anchor chain being released. The Veendam arrived in Santarem about the same time. There were 2 tours offered, both to the Santarem area. A Santarem city tour was $80 and a visit to an Arboretum $100. Neither tour interested me (I had done the Santarem tour in 2013). My plan was just to explore the town a bit on foot and perhaps take a dip at the beach which was supposed to be nearby. I got breakfast about 7:30 and tendering had started. I was ready to go when it started pouring again. I finally left the ship about 8:30. The tender ride was about a mile and ended a bit strangely. We had a short boardwalk which ended in a stretch of soft sand, followed by a longer boardwalk and finally a little shelter with very primitive restrooms. https://morethangetaways.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/temderdock.jpg My first look at Alter Do Chao was not very positive. Judging by our view of the ship with a number of what looked like hotels I thought the town was to the south (right) of the tender dock and I went that way. What I saw was not at all attractive, many streets changing abruptly to dirt, large vacant spaces, and just a few small stores. It soon started to drizzle and I returned to the dock. https://morethangetaways.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/altersouth.jpg When I was first at the tender dock there was not much activity (and there had been only 3 people on my tender) but it picked up during my stay with a number of vendors displaying their wares. https://morethangetaways.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/landingalter.jpg The drizzle eased up enough that I decided to try the other direction from the landing. It turned out to be the right choice as there were more stores and more people. It was several blocks to the church, a fairly plain structure built in 1896 and restored in 2011. Across the alley from the church there was a general store. I noted that about half of the products advertised on the signs were insecticides. https://morethangetaways.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/dochaochurch.jpg The main town square was directly across the street from the church. https://morethangetaways.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/altersquare.jpg The main street was just a short block away from a bay. A spit jutted into the bay from the opposite shore and appeared to be lined with little thatched shelters which were almost totally under the high water level. https://morethangetaways.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/floodspit.jpg A sort of promenade ran back along the bay almost to the tender landing. A number of locals were on the promenade offering boat tours. https://morethangetaways.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/alterwalk.jpg The promenaded ended at a beach that was perhaps a 5-minute walk from the tender pier. It looked inviting but nobody was in the water and I took that as a sign that coming back for a swim was not likely a good idea. I took a quick dip in the lido pool after returning to the ship (about 10:30). https://morethangetaways.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/alterbeach.jpg It would be a big day for poultry as I centered my lunch plans on the roast turkey being served at the Lido Carvery. Most of the afternoon was spent catching up on some internet business. All aboard was 4:30. In his sailaway message Captain Jeroen confirmed that our encounter with the Veendam in Santarem would be more than perfunctory and we would pass there about 6PM which was also their departure time. I passed the word to my waiters that I would be at the table only for desert and headed up to the upper decks. I mostly watched our sail down the Tapajos from deck 13 forward but headed down to the Lido Marketplace at 5:30 for a fruit cup and parmesan chicken, pretty much the same things I would have ordered in the dining room. After finishing the food I headed down to the Seaview Pool. We got our first look at the Veendam a little after 6 and went past her about 6:15. I noticed that the bulk carrier CS Sonoma which was sitting very high in the water as sand (I think) was loaded into her holds from barges next to her was still there but now appeared almost fully loaded. The Veendam was still moored but a small boat was next to one of the off-dock mooring platforms getting ready to release her lines. https://morethangetaways.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/veenmeet.jpg I could see large crowds on both Veendam's forward and aft outer decks, and could see a lot of camera flashes from her decks and verandas. Veendam gave the first horn blast about 6:10 and Prinsendam quickly responded starting about a 5-minute symphony of sound from both ships, long and short and both alternating and simultaneous. (Confidential to the Holland America sailaway addicts--I think Captain van Eersten would have been very impressed with the tooting). https://morethangetaways.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/veendecks.jpg I was not long at table 19. It was just Patty and Sherita for dinner and they were already on their deserts when I arrived. I opted for the blueberry sundae but excused myself pretty quickly as there appeared to be a promising sunset in the offing. https://morethangetaways.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/dishes13.jpg I did not really see the sun and actually turned the camera away from the best colors but there was a very nice color in the sky right behind the Veendam which was turning upstream while we turned downstream and was almost at right angles to us. https://morethangetaways.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/dusk0314.jpg The featured entertainment was "digital magician" Jamie Allan. His tricks largely involved things he was doing on an I-phone. I decided I had seen enough after 20 minutes. https://morethangetaways.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/allan.jpg As a parting shot, our encounter with the Veendam seemed a bit like a passing of the torch. Once the Elegant Explorer leaves the fleet she will be taking on many of her itineraries. The Veendam is far from my favorite ship but what makes a cruise great are the itinerary and the crew. I wish the Veendam's current and future passengers wonderful memories. Roy
  15. I've sailed the Veendam twice over the past year or so. Loved both of my cruises on her. The crew is fabulous and the ship was very clean both times. Food is really subjective, but I enjoyed everything I ate. I really enjoyed sitting in the Explorations Cafe/Library with a specialty coffee and watching the sea go by. Also, the Veendam has a nice wrap around promenade deck. Great for those morning walks. The complaints I heard mostly centered around a couple of elevators in the rear bank that were not working. I understand that has been fixed in the dry dock. The ship doesn't have all the entertainment options of the newer, larger ships and the cabins still have the old type non-interactive tv's. At least on the Veendam, you will still have a place to sit in your cabin, lol. This thread has some information and pictures posted from someone who was onboard after the recent dry dock. It looks like some of the public areas were updated.

  20. We were in Hawaii on the Celebrity Eclipse in May. My husband has a wheelchair and rents a scooter for use on the ship. We had a slightly different itinerary than you have but the only port we were able to get off at was Hilo, which this was fine with us as we love days on the ship (and days at sea). In Hilo there were a lot of people walking to the downtown (?) area, even in wheelchairs, even though the walk was over a mile instead of taking a cab. If you have a collapsible wheelchair you can go on some of the ship's shore excursions (or private ones) that have a place to stow the chair. Holland will have a list of their wheelchair accessible shore excursions (although probably not until closer to sailing). But you can take a look at their shore excursions for their Hawaii cruises for this fall and get an idea of what might be offered next year. Or contact private tour operators in your port to see what they offer. As far as getting off the ship in tender ports, this is direct from Holland's website: For individuals with limited mobility, the use of a wheelchair will be the primary mobility assistance aid for getting on and off the ship. Certain ship transfer operations (i.e. during tendering and at the gangways) may not be fully accessible to wheelchairs or scooters. When a ship is unable to dock, guests are taken ashore on smaller boats called tenders. Some guests with limited mobility may find it difficult to embark or disembark the ship at certain times while tendering or while docked due to steep gangways and steps, particularly during low or high tide. Also, please note that scooters and wheelchairs which are more than 100 lbs. without the battery are not allowed to be transferred from the ship to tender and/or from tender to shore. Follow this link to view the tender list by port: https://www.hollandamerica.com/en_US/accessibility/port-tender-list.html As to tenders, with the exception of the Amsterdam, Volendam, Veendam and Prinsendam, Holland America Line vessels have been retrofitted with a tender-lift system that enables guests to roll directly on and off tenders while remaining in their wheelchairs. However, please be advised that adverse weather conditions such as wind, swells, or extreme tide levels may prohibit the use of the ship's tender lift equipment. Additionally, some port facilities may not be able to accommodate the lift equipment. If you require the use of this equipment, please speak with the Guest Relations Manager upon embarkation for further details or to coordinate specific arrangements. Situations may occur in which guests with limited mobility may not be able to go ashore at the time they desire or are unable to go ashore at all in certain ports. For the safety of all concerned, the Captain shall make the final determination regarding whether or not it is advisable to provide assistance to guests with mobility limitations, or to carry their mobility assistance device (wheelchair, scooter, walker, etc.), taking into account all appropriate matters including, but not limited to, weather conditions, ship's location, weight of the guest or their mobility device, etc.
  21. I'm deciding between a main deck o/v, and a lower promenade lanai on Veendam. I've been reading some older posts from when the lanai cabins were new, so I'm wondering if, as more people have tried them, I can hear more opinions. I like o/v cabins on lower decks to minimize movement and I do like having the ocean right outside my window. It's as if I'm really "on" the water. The lanai cabin would give me wonderful access to the promenade, where I tend to spend more time than the sunny pool decks. I like the shade and hearing the water against the hull. So I guess my questions are, if I get the o/v, will I still be able to find a deck chair on the promenade, and if I get a lanai, will the feeling be much different since I have to look out across the promenade to see water? I understand I'd have to close the curtains at night if I want privacy in the lanai, but I love the idea of poking my head out first thing in the morning for some fresh air. I think the price difference is about $400 US for 12 nights. Thank you for any opinions and insights. This will be my first time on HAL.
  22. We love HAL, but would avoid the Veendam. My brother was on it 6 months ago and really did not like it. It is an older ship IMO.
  23. I suggest you start your reading with the 771 Veendam reviews HERE, beginning with most recent and working backward.
  24. Two major differences; Zaandam (an "R"-class ship) is a bit larger than Veendam (an older "S"-class ship) and thus has an extra stairwell and set of elevator banks located mid-ship (Veendam does not have those and has her stairwells/elevators forward and aft) The other major difference; HAL, back in April 2009 and in their/someone's infinite wisdom, decided to remove the aft/Seaview pool on Veendam and replace it with what they called "The Retreat." This was described as a "new resort-style pool area on Lido deck aft with the "pool" divided into three main sections separated by low, curving walls running the length of same." The middle section was 16 inches deep so guests could "sit on built-in benches in the water." The two side sections "featured forty-four lounge chairs in eight inches of water with water falls and spouts added to enhance the overall decor." Located at the aft end of the poollette was a hot tub. This project also added 31 new staterooms aft, "Slice," an upscale pizzeria, a big screen to watch movies on, and one of the ugliest-looking ship rear ends since Noah built his original ark. The only problem with this grand idea was that, after coming out of dry-dock with her sparkling Retreat pool, every time good ol' Veendam made a somewhat sharpish turn to port and/or starboard, voluminous portions of H2O decided, on their own, mind you, to exit the poolette post haste and, on more than one occasion, make its way into the nearby aft elevator banks, as well as other unintended locations below decks, resulting in all sorts of nasty issues. As a result of these unexpected and continual leakage problems on Veendam, the "poolette" (only one other was installed in another dam ship - could have been five as was originally planned!), was unceremoniously removed during a subsequent dry-dock in 2011 and replaced with a total of four separate hot tubs, two circular and two rectangular shape which don't leak to the extend of that awesome poolette So, no aft pool om Veendam but four hot tubs instead. Unless you'tre going to Cuba, I would take Zaandam where you can listed to a very nice Pluer Band organ playing tunes in the atrium at certain times in the day
  25. Cruisers- in an effort to decipher MY favorite cruise line & ship, I was wondering if you all would be so gracious to list yours and why? I have been on 14 cruises thus far with 9 planned through 2021: Carnival (can’t remember ship name ) Bahamas 1988 Carnival Elation Key West/Cozumel 2006 Holland America Ryndam Caribbean 2014 Azamara Journey Greece/Turkey 2015 Viking Emerald China 2016 (River) Paul Gauguin Ms. Paul Gauguin French Polynesia 2016 Hurtigruten Polarlys Norway 2016 Holland America Oosterdam Alaska 2017 Windstar Star Legend Iceland 2017 Holland America Veendam Cuba 2017 Avalon Poetry II France 2018 (River) Celebrity Summit Bermuda 2018 Norwegian Jade Panama Canal 2018 Uncruise Safari Endeavor Baja del Sur, Mexico 2019 My ‘problem’ is I want to try everything and can’t decide weather to cruise for line/ship or neither and stick with new destinations, which is a requirement. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
