  1. Veendam took more heat on Cruise Critic for her added cabins, HVAC, plumbing, and other problems than any ship in the fleet and this was back in the time that the slightest unfavorable comment about HAL was jumped on by the cheerleaders. I'd read so many complaints about the Veendam that I said I would not sail on her. We sailed her twice, a delightful around the Horn cruise in 2011 and a Hawaii cruise during which we returned to San Diego to debark a sick passenger and then stopped to rescue a pilot near Hawaii. Wonderful cruises, but I'd have rather been on any other ship in the fleet.
  2. I sailed the VEENDAM to Alaska on several occasions. I also sailed herto the Western Caribbean out of Tampa.
  3. Add to my list the "Veendam". The one that ran in tandem with the "Volendam", which were originally the Moore-McCormack line's "Argentina" and "' Brazil". One weeker's out of NYC to Bermuda in season. I wonder if either is still sailing?
  4. I sailed the Veendam in 2002, my sisters, nieces and nephews first cruise..........they were hooked on cruising and HAL...........we still talk about that cruise and how much fun they all had................and how much fun the kids had with Club HAL........they can take the ship away, but can never take those memories away...................
  5. Veendam was our first HAL ship in 2005, and recently, our last cruise before the pandemic. We were on the 10 day Caribbean xmas sailing with family, this past December 2019. attached are pictures of Christmas tree lighting/Christmas caroling on the Veendam, and the gingerbread house display. 7. We did the Panama Canal on the Veendam. Panama buns
  8. The Veendam, the fourth ship of the "S" class, sailed from Tampa during the winter season for quite a few years in the 2000's. I did 3 cruises on her: Canada/New England and then to Bermuda Cuban Explorer Carnival and Amazon Explorer All 3 of these itineraries consisted of ports or channels that were size restricted, which necessitated a ship Veendam's size or smaller. Docking on Front St in Hamilton was the best example. Entering the passage to Ceinfuegos, Cuba was another.
  9. May well be headed to Cyprus. Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Veendam, and Maasdam were all headed in that direction, but, as you may know, are no longer part of the HAL fleet. Not scrapped, at least.
  10. Rich.. Your Daily is my "Go to" read every morning, much appreciated. I especially like to follow the position of all the HAL ships each day, looking for the signal that they are actually moving toward the embarkation port for their next cruise. As soon as I see a ship two days out from the date and port, I'll start booking like crazy. I'm a single cruiser, and fully retired, so it is not a big deal if I book too late to make a specific cruise, as I can just go on the next available one, pretty much anytime. The exception to that would be for a unique itinerary such as the Pacific Battles Cruise on Maasdam last year. I would have hated to have missed that one. I'd also hate to miss the Africa Circumnavigation on Zaandam in October 2021. Other than those an a few others, most sailings can be duplicated with a later sailing if I miss out because of a sold out condition, and so the actual date doesn't much matter to me. With that in mind, this is what I am watching... First let me say that my posts are prone to errors.. I am old and don't proof read very well, and the data in the rest of my post may have errors, and may already be obsolete by the time I post it. The purpose of my post is just to show what I am watching. Again, as soon as I see a ship two days out from the port, that will be my signal to book cruises for the coming year. Another good signal would be when I hear that crews have returned to a specific ship. Is it likely that the crews will be flown to the embarkation port, or will the ships all sail to the crew's home countries to pick them up on the way to their next embarkation post? Here is the list from your opening post today, with what I think is the first sailing for the ships, again, most likely with errors.. I am not focused on accuracy with my additions, just an overall picture. It seems like at this point, a lot depends on Ft. Lauderdale opening up. I live fairly close to Ft. Lauderdale, and would like to be one of the first passengers on the first HAL ship out, but again, if I miss the first one, then next one out will be fine with me. It would be great that if anyone hears any news on crew movements, that they would add it too. 12. Good evening, everyone. Tonight's sunset is the sun going down over Grand Traverse Bay. This was just a few minutes ago. I will toast to the Maasdam and the Veendam. I sailed Maasdam the first time I did the Historic Coasts itinerary. We thought she was a beautiful ship and we were quite happy that Hurricane Danny did not chase us up the coast. I sailed Veendam to Antarctica and for the second Historic Coasts cruise. I have many happy memories of both ships.
  13. We just toasted the Maasdam and Veendam. It's a great idea to have something to toast each evening. Thanks for the idea!
  14. I am not much of a beach person as, fair skin and severe sunburn forbids sunbathing. Love the menu suggestions including the toasted marshmallows. Giving thanks that we had just over .5" of rain last night with more possible the next couple of days. Desert rain is always hit or miss but I believe that last night covered most all of the greater Phoenix area. The humidity in the air makes it easier for this COPD sufferer to breathe and easier for this chronic dry eye sufferer to see. I liked the Veendam but the Masdaam was my 2nd favorite ship, just below the Noordam III which was the first ship I ever cruised on. Crying crocodile tears for both these wonderful ships.
  15. Thank you Rich for The Daily and Roy for the Care and Celebrations list! I am not much of a beach goer when it comes to warm weather and sitting out and getting sun. I love to explore the tide pools in Oregon. Here are a few pictures from Ecola State Park on the Oregon Coast. Hope everyone has a great day. I’ll toast to Veendam and Maasdam tonight to say goodbye. We never sailed the Maasdam but we loved the Veendam. Good night all!
  16. Our "last cruise" was Feb 5-19, 2020 on the Veendam, 2 week B2B. We went with good friends we had met on Veendam June 2013 & vacationed with several times a year since. We also were on that "last cruise" with our dear neighbors, who have cruised with us for at least 11 cruises on HA, Princess, Celebrity, Royal & Viking. This group of people planned & booked to go on Veendam again the last week of Jan 2021, but before V was sold, we all decided the cruise atmosphere probably would not be to our liking, so we cancelled. Instead we are going to rent a large home beachside in FL for that week, where we can congregate as we want (happy hours all day & no masks!!).....
  17. Good morning Rich, fellow Daily-ites, My sisters Denise and Ann, and Roy, and kazu. I think Denise said she and David were driving up for a ride and would be off the Daily for a day or so. Rich thank you for the Daily. Sad to see our ships going off your map. I agree with @cat shepard we should do a farewell toast to the Maasdam and Veendam tonight. The wine doesn't sound interesting this morning but the bottle looks pretty. I have about 6 shrimp left, perhaps I will make a little appetizer of rosemary and lime for tonight's Happy Hour. @kazu and Ann, nothing showed up on the deer cam. I think I'll still bring the feeders in for a few more nights. Our birds were yakking it up at 6 wanting their breakfast.. I felt so bad for the victims of hurricane Laura. What a miserable mess. We have them in our prayers along with Roy's prayer list. Blessings to all today. Take care, be safe, don't give up the ship. Love ya'll.
  18. Both Maasdam and Veendam are off the map today. Hope the new owners are sucessful in the new line. Happy Sunday to everyone.

  21. I agree island hopping in the Med is fun, but Maasdam and Veendam are still not really small ships, not the kind I think of making those runs around the (less trafficked) Greek islands...
  22. Interesting that ex Veendam will be registered in Hamilton for Bermuda flag. I would have guessed Piraeus for Greek flag. Wonder why?
  23. I have had great fun in 'the old days' going island hopping. It is a great way to see the greek islands. Maybe we will get to see a few new islands on Maasdam/Veendam.
  24. I appreciate the update and the link. Interesting to note that the picture of the Aegean Majesty shows the same exterior view of the Veendam with the same number of lifeboats than an earlier rendition of the ship under the new ownership.
  25. This was forwarded to me this afternoon. It appears the new owner is SeaJets, a new entity that is entering the cruise market http://crew-center.com/seajets-new-owner-two-former-hal-ships
