  1. Got a good chuckle out of your post. Will sail once again on the Veendam Dec 2019. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  2. I just tried to get the promotion added to my existing reservation (final payment is due in a couple of weeks). I was successful a couple of years ago having the promotion added to an existing reservation. This morning was very confusing and after 45 minutes on the phone with my big box agent ("bba") and the bba on the phone with a HAL rep. I hung up with no changes to my existing reservation. There were quite a few scenarios communicated to me that included: (i) refare to a higher fare and add $150 obc (which put me ahead by $42, not $100. Where did this $150 obc come from? I'm sailing on the Veendam in an OV on an 11 night itinerary, I believe the promotional obc is $100. (ii) and after more back and forth, leave the exisiting fare and have the $100 obc added. This was what I wanted and when I said yes, the bba went back to HAL and then came back to me and said that option was a mistake. I decided to end the call with the bba after instructing her to keep my existing reservation, and thanking her for spending so much time with me this morning. The bba seemed to agree with me that the HAL rep must have been new (indicated HAL rep was working through HAL supervisor as I continued to ask questions and for clarification of what I was being told). I'll call back tomorrow and hopefully the bba will connect with a HAL agent with more experience. And in the end, if no changes or additional benefits are made to my reservation, I'm good. 4. Too funny. HAL could have kept doing Bermuda with Veendam docking in Hamilton. Instead they sent her to Europe. They sure aren’t going to tender guests to Hamilton. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. Veendam's last dry-dock was between 28 March and 08 April 2016 in Freeport, the Bahamas. This was for standard maintenance plus included hull treatment (repaint hull markings), She also received mechanical work on side thruster#1 (fwd) which was overhauled, and on side thruster #2 (fwd) which received a blade seal replacement. Her stern thruster received a blade/shaft seal replacement. Her longitudinal bulkhead was cropped and renewed and a scrubber and auxiliary diesel generator(ADG) was installed Her next dry-dock per schedule will also be in Freeport from 06-13 April 2019 for standard maintenance, the installation of an indoor ice skating rink, a wave runner system, indoor bowling alley, bumper cart rink, outdoor zip-line course, double climbing wall with para sailing from the top, and a super water slide OK, just kidding; standard maintenance only
  6. Hi friends. We are booked on the Veendam for a Caribbean cruise in December. The date for final payment has just passed. I'm sort of obsessive about looking at how many cabins remain unsold, and for the Vista Suites there are at least 34 cabins unassigned. For Neptunes there are at least 8 unassigned. Two questions: Why did the price actually increase just before the final payment date? I would have thought that HAL would want to lower prices and start to sell more of the unassigned premium cabins. I read on another thread that when looking at the unassigned cabins shown on any particular view in a dummy booking you will never see more than 10 total. I certainly have never seen more than 10, and often they are grouped in blocks at one end of the deck on both sides. That looks very artificial to me, so I have wondered if there are more unassigned cabins than are being shown. Any thoughts? Bonus question: Knowing that there are rather a lot of cabins unassigned, when would you expect that the upsell offers would begin? And would you expect that they would follow HAL's typical pattern of starting high and having several rounds of upsell offers? Okay, so that's four questions. Or five. Or something. Thanks for your thoughts!
  7. Thanks, KK, for reading my blog. Glad you are enjoying! We were on Veendam in 2010 on a SA and Antarctic cruise just after she had suffered heavy weather, lost much of her china and glassware, rippled her starboard bow, buckled the decking on the bow and lost a couple of windows in the Crow's Nest. That was the same year Clelia II was disabled by weather in the Drake. We saw her in Ushuaia undergoing repairs.
  8. Tuesday marks the end of the Juneau season. Westerdam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2300. Westie is heading north to two more ports in Alaska before crossing the Pacific to Japan and China. She will spend the winter doing a variety of Asian itineraries before heading back to start her Alaska season in May. Juneau is welcoming her last cruise visitors with a cool but sunny day. There is a 0% chance of rain but the high will only be 53F/12C (better cool and sunny than cool and rainy;)) and the low a cold 31F/-1C. Sunrise is at 7:05 am and sunset at 6:28 pm. The only other ship in port is Norwegian Pearl at the AJ dock from 1400-2200. The PTZtv webcam can be found at http://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: The FLL sail-away season begins on October 17th but there will be some HAL sightings before that. October 3rd - Zuiderdam in New York City from 0700-2000. http://www.nyharborwebcam.com/ http://www.portnywebcam.com/ October 15 - Volendam in Aruba from 0800-2300. http://www.portarubawebcam.com/ October 16 - Veendam in Port Canaveral 0800-1700. http://www.portcanaveralwebcam.com/
  9. I should make the next 3 pre-FLL sailaways. See the addicts for NYC and Zuidy - tomorrow afternoon. Otherwise see you on the 17th in FLL for Veendam.
  10. Monday, October 1, 2018, At Sea headed towards Hawaii I planned to sleep in this morning. Didn't. I was out on the promenade deck at 5:45 to entertain the hose guys. The back railing of the promenade looks right out over the water, it is a weird feeling to look down at the churning wake. Noordam seems huge after sailing on the Veendam and Prinsendam, it is surprising what a long walk it is from one end to the other and remember that I can't use the elevators while Mrs. W is around. I have been avoiding her. The next activity is always at the far end of the ship. Lazy day at sea. We had a nice meet and greet in the Crow's Nest at 10:00, well shepherded by Paula. It was obvious she was a school teacher, she did not have to confess it. Went to the EXC (hate the name, but Holland America might pay me for mentioning it) talk “Geology is a Real Science: Don't Believe Sheldon”. Had to go, I'd met Phil, the lecturer. Good talk on geologic disasters; volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis. I was so comfortable with the topic that I fell asleep. That's embarrassing, I have become the old guy that falls asleep during the lectures. We try not to buy anything that displays a logo. My wife failed spectacularly. Her shoe has the New Balance (maybe New Balance will pay me for the mention) logo on the tip, at the base of the shoestring, at the top of the tongue, on the right side, on the left side, on the bottom, and at the heel. Seven logos on each shoe, fourteen logos on the pair. She is a walking billboard for New Balance and will come afoul of section 11 of the Holland America cruise contract: “You shall not solicit other Guests for commercial purposes or advertise goods or services without Carrier's prior written permission...” We will see how this plays out. This may become a solo cruise for me. Lido lunch was a challenge, long wait for a couple of slices of lamb. The server told one guy that the line formed behind me, did not tell the other half dozen that cut in front. I got a kick out of a broken “no touch” water dispenser. A staff member told me it was broken. I watched other cruisers try to get it to work. I saw a staff member try to fill a water pitcher there. Nobody thought to mark it out of order. Maybe the “Out of Order” sign making machine is out of order. Waiting in lines, trying to find a table, getting up to fetch what you forgot, getting up to fetch what your wife forgot, is not the way to enjoy a relaxing meal. I spent most of the afternoon reading, heard some foreign languages, hope to hear a break down of the nationalities onboard. Took my first ride on one of the little used glass elevators this afternoon. Whee! Dinner was a more polished affair tonight, excellent error free service, still took about two hours. Mrs. Whogo ordered me to work on this blog while she went to the early show by Unique3, “Blending three unique voices into one beautiful sound they bring joy and nostalgia to those who have a passion for all types of music.” I attended the late show, one singer did not match the blond pictured on the When and Where program, fortunately there was a spare Unique voice available. I wonder how many Unique3 groups there are. I did not quite close out the piano bar, left at 12:30.
  11. The Veendam and Koningsdam will be stopping in Kusadasi in May , 2019. We booked solely because of this stop....so excited to be returning to Kusadasi. eclue:cool:

  15. We absolutely love the car washes!!! We first encountered them on the Veendam in 2010 and have used them on Westerdam and either Nieuw Amsterdam or Koningsdam, not sure which or maybe both. I always sing "working at the car wash" to myself when using them, which is whenever we're on the Lido.

  19. We're looking forward to it. There are lots of rules with Americans visiting Cuba, but we'll figure it all out. I will hopefully post a review after we return, so check in the Veendam reviews of Cuba within a month or two after our return at the end of October. We're leaving in about 2-1/2 weeks!

  22. My husband and I are also booked on this cruise due to the itinerary. Morocco is also on my husbands bucket list. We have never sailed in Holland America. We are sailing on HA in Nov on the Veendam to Cuba. We look forward to our TA in March. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
  23. We pretty much agree with your HAL vs X ratings. HAL has much better itineraries. Celebrity has better past passenger benefits including some free internet. We remember our cruise on HAL on Veendam to Alaska in 2006. Food wise it was better than any other HAL or Celebrity cruise in the past 12 years. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

  25. Please help assure me that I didn't make a mistake. I have never cruised on HAL and I wanted to surprise my husband as a Christmas present for a NYE celebration. I have booked the Veendam but I have just read a terrible "Live" review. The ship is dated, and power surge problem: "We were settling into our suite, waiting to muster, and suddenly there was a strange, loud humming noise. Our TV went all staticky. Ship’s whistle blew 7 times, lights dimmed (this was all before we left port). It took some time to hear from the captain that there had been a power surge. I could go into more detail but, to sum up, our 4 PM sailing became a 6 PM sailing then it was announced that we would not sail. We spent the night in Montreal. We were told we would get an update in the morning but when I woke up this morning, we were moving. We arrived in Quebec City at 4 PM today and are spending the night and all day tomorrow in QC. Charlottetown has been cancelled. Most services are up and running but many light fixtures are still only operating at emergency level. The crew is handling it all well but I can’t say I’m thrilled (in the sense of feeling like the ship is truly seaworthy). Not a great introduction to HAL" Worried that this present won't be much fun.
