  2. Now I know the difference between the Victoria and the Elizabeth. I've never been on Cunard. One of the Holland America lecturers said I should go just once for the experience. As for Cuba, I'm thankful we got to go on the Veendam when we did. I've learned that when an opportunity presents itself, don't wait.
  3. I know a number of people who could show up and claim that HAL is horrible based only on one unfortunate cruise and none thereafter. Seems to me it is possible to have a wonderful cruise or a very poor cruise on many lines. Does anyone think that HAL, Celebrity, Cunard or Oceania are exempt from this? In the past we have met a few former Veendam cruisers who feel exactly this way about HAL.
  4. There have been a lot of good comments here. Most of my days aboard have been on the S and R class ships. We tried to overlook some of the problems that came with the older ships because we did, as several of you said, enjoyed the advantages of a smaller ship. I was curious about the Koningsdam, so we did an 11 day Caribbean cruise. The ship was overwhelming at first, but beautiful in many ways. K'dam's MDR lacked any individual attention for the most part. The walk around deck without deck chairs was sad. We were dazzled by the theater. Everything worked and nothing leaked. Our on
  5. Never heard of it. But with an ice cream maker, anything is possible! (Somehow this makes me think of the presentation on Veendam of making ensamadas. I thought it so strange, then found some on the Lido the next day. Oh my gosh!😋 I have since made that recipe and taken them to work.

  9. Excellent pic. The ceiling light fixtures on the Veendam weren't working the last few years which was sad. The Maasdam's were, the last I knew.

  11. Loosing the Maasdam, Veendam, Rotterdam and Amsterdam this year and Prinsendam two years ago, was very sad for many of us. Loosing the "exotic" itineraries is maybe even sadder. We have had Australia and New Zealand on our bucket list as well as those small South Pacific and Asian ports. Maasdam was our choice, but now it will have to be Oosterdam if we go and we know it can't access some of them. Let us hope there will be still be some itineraries for those of us that don't want to restrict cruising to the Caribbean, Panama Canal, Alaska, and the big city ports of Europe.
  12. Maybe it is a “language “ thing , but why are most ( non- Dutch) people referring to the ships as “ Rotterdam, Veendam etc. “ instead of THE Rotterdam and THE Veendam . Onboard ( remember when) , when the CD makes an announcement they say , for instance, activities happening on Rotterdam today . When the captain makes his announcement he always says THE Rotterdam. Same with the name of the company, it is Holland America Line , not Holland America or , even worse, just Holland . So , I p*ssed my vinegar for today 😉

  14. Great evening read again. Thanks for all the posts. Will have to tell my daughter who is a PA happy belated PA day tomorrow when I get the grandkids for school. Our TA applied our FCC and OBC that came from the cruise we had booked on the Veendam to a cruise today. A good feeling to have a cruise in the my future!   16. Vitoria, Brazil? Veendam was unable to stop there in 2017 due to civil unrest. We went to Buzios instead which was enjoyable.
  17. An update on progress. Yesterday I received a booking confirmation from HAL showing the removal of the FCD’s used to book the cancelled March Veendam. When logging in the only FCC’s are two FCD’s, one from before and the one from cancelled March cruise. The March booking remains as a booked cruise. I’m hoping that means a refund will soon appear on my credit card.

  20. No change in the Town Cut channel - not allowed due to environmental purposes. Originally it was thought Veendam would make it by its weight in tonnes, but when the whole set of specs was given it was discovered that the ship was too big for the Town Cut.
  21. Thanks for sharing these pics of the Veendam. This was shortly after the rear verandah rooms were added. As for St George, Bermuda, wasn't there a change in the access or channel that prevented Veendam from using it? I don't recall Prinsendam, which was narrower, getting in there. The former Renaissance ships seem to.
  22. Yes! You're correct! It was before Veendam was due to start coming to Bermuda on weekly basis in Summer 2010, and it was our first time seeing Veendam. He was due to spend 4 days/3 overnights, docking in both St. George's and Hamilton .... but when we saw him we exclaimed that he's too big to enter the Town Cut to St. George's ... unfortunately we were correct. He ended up docked the whole time in Hamilton whenever he came to Bermuda the next few summer seasons.
