  2. With Maasdam, Veendam, Rotterdam and Amsterdam gone, HAL's longer itineraries will be cut back. As mentioned under another thread, the older guests who do these cruises may not return as soon or in as great of numbers until covid19 is no longer an issue. That may have pushed HAL to sell these ships now, rather keep them in longer layup. Wouldn't that apply to most of the cruise lines who do longer itineraries, ie, Azamara, Oceania, Crystal, etc?
  3. today is National Food Bank Day, Newspaper Carrier Day, and College Colors Day (Red and Black) The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not "Eureka!" 4. Sailing the Veendam from Boston to Bermuda was my first solo cruise. Docking on Front Street was perfect, everything was so easily accessible. The crew was gracious and I met many enjoyable passengers. She was a special ship and I’m sorry I won’t get to sail her again.
  5. Three more Veendam pics I have been looking for. The first is docked at Key West, Mallory Square. Notice the Crow's nest with a wrap around window which looked back along the open deck. All of the HAL ships since have rooms, cabanas, etc blocking the view astern. Second is the Veendam anchored on the Amazon River for Boca de Valeria, Brazil. The river was high, giving the illusion that the ship may have run aground. Third is the Stephen Card painting of the Veendam arriving in Bermuda, which was displayed in the Crow's Nest. Question: Were the Card paintings removed fro
  6. This was the Veendam's Crow's nest in 2017.
  7. Ships are the Best: Wonderful, thanks. Compare your pics to the 2010 Crow's Nest!!! As I wrote earlier, HAL finally invested in the Veendam, but now for naught. Captain Albert posted last year when I questioned him if the 2 S class were going away soon, wrote that the company realized the value of their smaller size for Venice, Cuba, Bermuda and other smaller ports, and therefore were keeping them. And then along came covid19.
  8. We loved our table for 2 on the balcony of the dining room on our first Veendam cruise in 2004. In 2013 I had the most wonderful cruise, Voyage of the Vikings, in one of those 'new' cabins on the rear of the ship. The balcony was nice and big, also shaded, so I could enjoy the scenery that was almost always visible, since the sun was out so many hours of the day at that time of year. What a treat to be in the middle of the Norwegian fjords and sit out there and just feel like part of it. I will miss the Veendam as well as Maasdam. Just the right size ships.
  9. Debbie Reynolds, who christened Veendam. Nice. Often used as a trivia question.
  10. Thank you! My hubby and I met him on the Veendam and would like to know what happens to him. We knew he is Polish. It’s my heritage, too!😊
  11. Captain Marek Ryszard Zoll, the only Polish captain with HAL and promoted in 2019, is one of the former Veendam two captains (the other is Captain Steve MacBeath.) With Maasdam, Veendam, Rotterdam and Amsterdam all leaving simultaneously, there are currently eight captains looking for a ship with only Rotterdam VII joining next year. It this is handled purely by seniority, it will have a trickle down effect and some recently promoted captains, like Capt. Zoll, might have to take a temporary step back to staff captain. Time will tell
  12. Hi Richwmn, I just started following The Daily—very interesting! My husband and I are on the Rotterdam VII Premiere Voyage, etc., etc. I was wondering if you know what may happen to the cruise staff of the HAL ships that were sold recently. I’m especially interested to know where the former Veendam captain (I think his name is Marek) ends up!?! Donna (Darjeeling)
  13. Veendam Crow’s Nest as it appeared in 2010.
  14. today is Skyscraper Day and US Bowling League Day When you make your mark in the world, watch out for guys with erasers. -- The Wall Street Journal Meal suggestion for today - Palad with Kalamata-Hazelnut Vinaigrette Drink of the Day - Beachcomber's Gold Wine of the day - Oberon Merlot Napa Valley vintage 2015 At Sea Atlantic Eurodam destination Sint Eustatius eta 9/15 Nieuw Amsterdam destination Fortaleza Brazil eta 9/7 Volendam destination Gibraltar eta 9/8 Westerdam destination Gibraltar eta 9/8
  15. We never sailed on the Veendam but we did cross paths back in Feb. on our Panama Canal cruise when they led the way out of Port Everglades. One last look Lori & George
  16. The Veendam, IMHO, had the best Crow's Nest in the fleet. It has visabilty all around without rooms or enclosed space behind it to block the view. Had the nicer circular bar like the R class adopted. The windows didn't have that vertical bar blocking the view. Plenty of deck space looking forward, which the new ships have omitted. I can't find the pics; hopefully someone else does. Please post!
  17. ??? Why did you say that sail? If Covid-19 had not made its appearance, the Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Veendam, and Maasdam would probably still be in the HAL fleet. The recent conversation has been on post-Covid 19's effects on HAL and the cruising industry.
  18. Veendam became one of our favorite sips. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
  19. We enjoyed the Veendam only once in August, 2011. It was our 50th anniversary and we celebrated with family and friends.
  20. today is VJ Day WWII, National Blueberry Popsicle Day, and Spalding Baseball Day Churchill's Commentary on Man: Man will occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of the time he will pick himself up and continue on. Meal suggestion for today - Grilled Chicken Salad with Blueberry Vinaigrette Drink of the Day - Coconut Rum Wine of the day - Concha y Toro Carmenère Peumo Serie Riberas Gran Reserva vintage 2016 At Sea Atlantic Eurodam destination Sint Eustatius eta 9/15 Nieuw Amsterdam destination Fortaleza Brazil eta 9/7 Rotterdam destination R
  21. We sailed on Veendam several times, beginning in 2014. We always liked the ship. We were on here last year for 67 days. The new carpet and furniture in many of the public areas really made her look clean and brighter. After the Prinsendam left the fleet, Veendam became our favorite ship. Her crew made her special. We have about decided to try not to have a favorite ship, since every time we do, the ship is sold. LOL
  22. We sailed the Veendam on the 52n Amazon and RIO Carnivale cruise in January 2019. Wonderful cruise that ticked a lot of boxes. So glad that we did it because in today's Corona world, we would not even consider it now . We have missed out on the Westerdam's South America/Antarctica/Solar Eclipse cruise in November, so it looks as though that part of the world is out of our reach also. Very sad 😥
  23. My sole cruise on Veendam was during July, 1998. It was a cruise that I came close to canceling. My Mother had passed in April. Should I again "enjoy" myself so soon afterwards was my concern. Mother was a "cruiser" and I concluded she would want me to complete my plans. We sailed on July 5th. I arrived in Fort Lauderdale two days early and was a guest at Hyatt Regency Pier 66. I remember vividly the fireworks that I saw over the ocean from that observation deck outside the Top of the Pier Lounge as well as other fireworks over parts of Fort Lauderdale. The Ja
  24. Great memories. Mrs Banjo and I sailed on Veendam 3 times. Our first was before they added the cabins on the stern. NYC to Bermuda, tied up in Hamilton, then sailed into St George. After her conversion she could no longer go through the cut., then twice Canada / New England. We also sailed on Ryndam from Tamps twice and in Norway in 2017. Masdam only once. Going to miss the S class. The others are just to big for us.
  25. Veendam to Bermuda June 2017. Also did a western Caribbean on her . Wish I could be in Bermuda now.
