  1. We are on the HAL Veendam, our first HAL Cruise...we have over 10 Celebrity Cruises so I thought I might compare our experiences. The Veendam carries about 1400 passengers and that factors into our comparison with M and S class ships. Our cabin is comparable in size to celebrity balcony cabins even though Hal calls it a suite. Price was comparable to celebrity C1 and A2 cabins...about 200 pp/day...of course prices vary by ship and cruise. We have anytime dining and we choose select dining on celebrity. The are essentially the same. I’ll talk about food at some later point. Demographics....we’ve all heard “the average age on HAL is dead”...but looking around, I think the age of the passengers is about the same as we’ve found on longer celebrity cruises. The difference is that there are very few under 50...I’ve only seen one child. If you are in your 60’s and 70,s you’ll fit right in. Note: we fit. Ship: very clean, comfortable seats everywhere unlike celebrity where we find chairs just too large for comfort. Crowds/lines: probably ship size dependent but there are no lines, always places to sit. Crew friendliness: same as celebrity...very friendly and willing to help. Service...Hal very easy to find someone to order a drink...in the buffet, someone always available to help if you need help. Big difference is that on HAL, they serve..if you want a salad, they handle the tongs. The wine folks at dinner are sommeliers! But one place that’s lacking is service in the mdr...it can be slow. Food: I think the food is pretty comparable and we’re foodies. The buffet has multiple stations, Asian, Italian, tacos plus the usual carved meats and prepared dishes. Everything I’ve tried has been good. Pastries are better on HAL..and that’s a surprise. Many more choices of buffet desserts on celebrity, but most, look better than they are. I had a cheese plate for dessert in the mdr and it was four different cheeses with dried fruit and crackers served on a slate tile...you don’t see that on celebrity. Buffet breakfast in the buffet area..made to order waffles, eggs, omelette and likely more...and no lines or searching for a table. Maybe smaller ships are the way to go. Alas, I do miss celebrity breadsticks. Hal’s bagels are far better than celebrity’s rolls with a hole in the middle. Salmon is the same on both. Drinks...Hal has menus that actually show prices of liquors...by brand and I think most common brands are in the $7-8 range plus 15% gratuity. There is a happy hour from 4-5 and 9-10 where you get a second drink for $2...so a single buffalo trace for $8 becomes a double for $10 and so on. Nothing like that on celebrity. More later....I’ll try to answer questions.
  2. Since I often see people wondering if they should book Veendam, I just thought I'd drop in and say that my Mom and I recently returned from an amazing Canada New England cruise on her. The ship was in great shape, the food was amazing and the service ... I can't even talk about it, just so, so good. My last few cruises have been on NCL, and the service there has been dropping like crazy. It's almost like I got used to it and forgot what great service looked like! Anyway, I'll be back to HAL for sure now, it was just so great and so restful. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone to book her.
  3. We're going on the Veendam in a couple weeks (Montreal to Miami) and wondered if anyone knows is April dry dock included upgrading suites with USB ports and large interactive TV's etc. like the newer ships have. Just trying to figure out what cords to pack. We're in a Neptune. Thanks in advance.
  4. For the first time I am trying an interior cabin. It's just a 7 day cruise so I acquiesced . Just this once. I have a guarantee (K690 ) aft on the Main deck (5). the deck plans show nothing below on Deck 4. Does anyone know what is on the aft end of deck 4? Thanks
  5. Looking at the Veendam - cabins 082 or 232 Vista Suite with larger balcony. Any difference between them? Is Navigation Deck preferred? Any experience with these cabins and opinions would be appreciated. Thank you
  6. Does anyone know when the Veendam was last in dry dock and what was done? Is there a site where this information is posted for HAL ships?
  7. Greetings and thanks in advance....can anyone tell us what is directly above these two cabins? Have looked at cruise deck plans dot cm and it is unclear what is up there! Appreciate your help!
  8. After skipping Tampa this upcoming season, 2019/2020, Holland America Line has decided to return to cruising from its long time Florida west coast port. The Veendam, which was the Tampa based ship for many years prior to 2008, is returning November 2020. She is scheduled to do 7 and 14 day itineraries much like those HAL has done for many years from Tampa. There is one 5 day initially and one 12 day at the end of the season. The 14 day, preferred my most HAL cruisers, varies port calls between Key West, San Juan PR, St Thomas VI, St Maartin, St Johns Antiqua, St Kitts, St Lucia, Aruba, Curacao, and Georgetown Cayman. The 7 and the 14 day combined for 21, cover mostly different ports. Not too long after HAL gave notice of leaving Tampa, Celebrity scheduled the Constellation for the 2020/2021 season, doing 10 &11 day itineraries. Veendam had been scheduled for Cuba cruises this upcoming season out of Ft Lauderdale, but is now doing standard Caribbean ports for there. Tampa works quite well for Cuba bound runs, so maybe she is in position to resume those if and when Cuba is reopened. In the meantime, those of us who prefer HAL will have a ship in Tampa, and Tampa will have more than Carnival/RCCL/NCL to choose from.
  9. Hi, Would like to meet people going on this trip.
  10. I’m looking for other cruisers views on the Holland America Cruise line ship... Veendam. Is it a good ship, bad ship, ok ship, no opinion?
  11. Hi all. I was hoping some of you can answer some questions for us. We absolutely LOVE cruising and have been doing so for over 45 years all in Caribbean but we have never sailed on Holland America and are looking at the VEENDAM. I am interested in December 28th sailing. But the reviews I am reading are so disappointing. Also does anyone have any reviews specifically on lower promenade H or HH? I know they say fully obstructed or partial obstructed but was hoping someone stayed in one and got a glimpse of the water. Thanks all in advance for your help!!!
  12. Going on the Veendam in April 2020 on a Transatlantic. I do not see much in the way of onboard entertainment on this ship. Are there decent movies to watch in your cabin?
  13. We have a transatlantic booked on the Veendam for October 2020. It was for 17 days and now it is 14 days and they cut 3 ports out of the itinerary. Instead of ending in Ft. Lauderdale it now ends in Tampa. I checked the cruises after the transatlantic and there are no other cruises being offered on the Veendam. So I was wondering is the Veendam the next ship being retired?
  14. Hello can anyone give me info on and cabins H387 and HH 385 on the Veendam what do you see when you look out the window? Also what is the condition of the cabins because the reviews are not so good? Thank you in advance for your help.
  15. We are booked in a Lanai on the Veendam for a Dec. cruise. Although we have been on the Veendam several times we have never booked that style cabin so are curious about suggestions and opinions from those of you who have. We are 4*, getting older and want to have that experience at least once. All suggestions and opinions will be appreciated, good and bad!
  16. Hello can anyone give me info on and cabins H387 and HH 385 on the Veendam what do you see when you look out the window? Also what is the condition of the cabins because the reviews are not so good? Thank you in advance for your help.
  17. I am about to take my mom on her first (last minute) cruise on the Veendam, Canada New England. There are some great deals to be had. Anyone have any experience with the front porthole cabins? They are pretty much all that is left. Are they noisy? Is the motion terrible? Any advice you can give would be great. My mom is 72, in great health, slightly deaf (lol). She has never been on a ship, but has never suffered motion sickness. She IS slightly claustrophobic, which is why I'm thinking being able to see light from outside would be helpful, but I don't think we need a view or anything. It's a port intensive cruise, only one sea day, so I really think we will only be there to sleep and watch a movie before bed, but I thought I'd see if anyone has any advice or tips. Thank you all so much.
  18. I've been considering a cruise on the Veendam which includes more sea days than I'm used to and I'm concerned about going a little stir crazy. I know the Veendam is a smaller ship with fewer bells and whistles, and that's actually fine. I'm usually pretty good about keeping myself busy or occupied, but I can only spend so much time reading or hanging out in the gym. Can you give me some ideas of what to expect, then I can hopefully decide if it will be right for me? I really love the itinerary and I'd like to make it work.
  19. Hi folks, Heading on a cruise leaving Venice on Aug 7th for 12 nights ending up in Rome. We picked the cruise on the Veendam for the schedule which has some incredible stops. We have been concerned however about some of the reviews commenting on the age and quality of the ship. My wife and I are in our early 30's and anyone we have spoken to keep telling us we will be the youngest on board. Has anyone cruised on the Veendam or completed that tour? Thanks, Chris
  20. Waiting for Nov 6 2019 Veendam sailing revisions from HAL … why is it taking so long … is Jun 15 still the expectation?
  21. We will be taking a 12 day Mediterranean trip on the Veendam in July. Was wondering if anyone knows if there is a self-serve laundry on board or if you need to utilize a shipboard laundry service. Do not want to over pack but want to make sure that clothes can be washed while on board. Also, can anyone provide info regarding Stern facing cabin B223 on the Verandah Deck. Does it have a nice sized balcony? Thanks for any information
  22. We've cruised on Celebrity and Princess...never on Holland America. We have a choice of Princess or the Veendam on very similar cruises at very similar prices and we thought we'd give Holland America a try. Then we read the reviews 😞 Clearly there were major problems on a cuba cruise last year that soured many on the Veendam, but there were also many others talking about non working A/C, unclean public facilities and the rest. It's hard to feret out the real truth in reviews....some rave about a ship, some hate everything. I think the Veendam went to drydock in April (this year??)....which may have helped renew this older ship. I'm looking for some input on the real current state of the Veendam....and to some extent a comparison with Princess (balcony princess to standard suite on Holland America) but both with standard dining and equivalent perks.
  23. Hello, I have booked my 1st HAL in 15 years for a cruise that leaves Barcelona in 45 days. While my agent was booking air, a mistake was made then when he went back in the price was $100 higher. Has anyone had this happen? I'm thinking that the 1st reservation took the air out of inventory so price went up for any future bookings. Also, any tips on the Veendam would be appreciated.
  24. While HA “ know before you cruise” states that there is a self serve laundry aboard the Veendam, I’ve read a few reviews that imply that it has been removed. Any first hand recent knowledge? Departing in 10 days. Thank you all!
  25. We are cruising to the Caribbean on the Veendam later this year and have booked an Oceanview cabin. Apparently there were no balcony cabins available when we booked back in January. I was wondering whether anybody has rented a fridge in this type of cabin. I gather space may be a problem. Cheers Rick
