  1. I just cannot believe that it is two months since I posted the last update, but luckily and thankfully a Dam cruise gave us something to focus on for too short a time. Anyway, here is the latest update of the Dry Docks, Charters and Groups Onboard file. A considerable number of charters and group sailings organisations have postponed their sailings from 2020 and 2021 until 2022 and now are starting to post 2023 Charters and Group sailings. For that reason the information here may change over the coming weeks and months, as more groups feel that they can safely return to cruising. It is expected that as the situation further improves many additional charters and groups will reconfirm their cruising intention, so stay tuned for further updates. Please note that the sailings listed are taken from various sources so it is possible that the itinerary does not coincide with the currently published HAL itinerary. As usual, if you have information about groups charters or dry docks then please post here and I will update in the next file. New information since last month is shown in RED. 3. Interesting set of days! We had a feral black cat who visited us regularly while we lived in the country in Florida. Such a sweetie! Naturally I will celebrate lung health day, as mine is so damaged and hope that others don't suffer similarly!! A good story is always enjoyed! @grapau27best wishes for a wonderful birthday. Your lunch looks great! @Seasick Sailorsending good thoughts for your DH's MOHS surgery. Hope that it is only one cutting! Both times I have had it, I was able to leave after the first go-round! Well, I had my booster dose on Monday, and yesterday morning I though I had come through it just fine. As the day wore on, I developed a fever, chills, and all over achy feeling (similar to the flu). This is certainly more than I had with the first two doses of Moderna. I feel somewhat better this morning, but am taking it easy. Hope no one else has a similar reaction! First dose I was sleepy, and second dose was no reaction at all! Guess my immune system fought the booster dose. St. Petersburg will be on the itinerary when I do the Baltics cruise In October on the Rotterdam just prior to the TA! Am looking forward to those cruises. I definitely want a better impression of Russia than I got in 2011 on the Volendam when we visited Valdivostock and Petrapalosk! Have a great day everyone!

  5. IMO there is a large difference between the lanai and a private balcony, particularly on a sailing like Alaska where the scenery makes up a major part of trip. Having the private space for viewing in places like Glacier Bay vs trying to get a good spot on the public decks makes an enormous difference. As Ruth mentioned the cabins are larger on Volendam vs the newer ships. For Alaska I would absolutely go with a balcony. HAL does not do Skagway out of Seattle (which really bothers me as we are Seattle based and we are not willing to forgo the convenience of leaving from our home port). It may be worth looking at a round trip out of Seattle. They offer them with Glacier Bay but Sitka instead of Skagway. Not sure on the pricing difference but if you are US based the cost to get to & from Seattle can be significantly lower than Vancouver even though it is just a 3 hour drive. 100% agree Glacier Bay is far better than any of the other glacier options. Love Skagway and the White Pass & Yukon unfortunately I have only been once. Sitka is a great port too but really want to get back to Skagway at some point. I have not been up to Seward/Anchorage so I can't really weigh in on that but if it were me I think I would do a round trip from Vancouver for the convenience and lower cost if not going all the way to Denali. I will be on my first sailing on Koningsdam in just over 2 weeks. We were hesitant to book our first sailing on Eurodam due to the size and had avoided it for years. We ended up really loving it once we actually got onboard and I suspect the same will hold true for the Pinnacle class. The added music walk venues are a really great benefit along with the Royal Dutch Cafe. The theater is actually smaller on Koningsdam despite the higher passenger count and they actually do three shows instead of two in a more intimate setting. I will definitely report back after sailing but the reviews I have seen have been mostly positive (unless you are very much attached to a traditional promenade deck). Very hard to predict. The smaller ships usually get a bit closer, but that being said it would not have made a difference on our last Alaska cruise. No ship could get close at all to Johns Hopkins and the Margerie & Grand Pacific Glacier were very accessible. I have sailed many cruises on the R class and the slightly smaller S class ships. They give a great cruise (and cabins are a bit larger). It really depends on what you enjoy doing in the evenings. You are correct on the differences. I didn't think we would like the Music Walk but we actually really enjoyed it. Between the venues most folks will find something they like especially on the larger ships. Unless having the smaller ship or all of the new features I don't think you can really go wrong either way. I would not hesitate to book on any HAL ship and I hope to have a chance to sail on one of the last remaining R class ships while they are still in the fleet. Definitely another concern. I believe the door is tinted if I remember correctly from walking past but I would also feel rather uncomfortable with a giant window onto a public deck and probably keep the curtains drawn the whole time. The R class ships were designed before the huge shift to balcony cabins and a very large number of ocean views vs balconies compared to the newer models. If you look at the deck plans you will find a lot of similarities on deck 2 & 3 of the newer ships with decks 4 & 5 of the R class. The design basically flipped these to make more balcony cabins and put the public decks lower down. Then they stretched it and added some venues to the extra space. As Ruth mentioned the lanai cabins were an afterthought to make up for the lack of balcony cabins. They are smaller than the other ocean views. A true balcony cabin will be a much better experience.
  6. Cabins on the Volendam are larger than cabins in the same category on the Noordam, which are larger than cabins in the same category on the Koningsdam. As the ships have gotten larger, the cabins have gotten smaller, in comparable categories. The Volendam Lanai cabins are converted outsides, which were the smallest outsides on the ship. They are noticeably smaller than the other outsides on the ship, and even smaller than the insides across the passageway. The Lanai cabins have two reserved loungers outside the sliding door, which is the public promenade. Otherwise, the Volendam is a very comfortable ship, and does a great cruise to Alaska. Usually there is a fare that is refundable, but does not have the promos included; the rate is lower. Perhaps that would be a good option for your mother-in-law, should you decide to take that ship.
  7. So I'm looking into rebooking my HAL cruise to Alaska yet again - I had the Glacier Discovery Northbound (Vancouver to Whittier, formerly to Seward) on Noordam booked for late May 2020, 2021, and now 2022, and I'm still a bit concerned about that not happening without restrictions I'd find unacceptable. I'd like to rebook for 2023 but with the road through Denali closed past mile 44, I'm considering some different options. Glacier Bay is a must, and Skagway would be highly desirable since I'd like to take the White Pass & Yukon train. Here are my options as I see them: 1) Same itinerary as 2022 for 2023 (Noordam from Vancouver to Seward departing on Sun. 5/28). With a Verandah cabin and the Have It All promo, it's about $200 more pp than our current itinerary, and there will be 3 of us in 2 cabins (so charged for 4), so this is not inconsequential but still doable. Upon arrival, we would spend a few days around Anchorage and Seward, adding to the cost but also getting the itinerary as close to our original plan as possible without Denali. 2) Roundtrip from Vancouver on Koningsdam departing on Sat. 5/27. With a Verandah cabin and the Have It All promo, it's about $250 more pp than our current itinerary. This appears to be a considerably bigger ship - any thoughts on whether that's a positive or negative for Alaska? 3) Roundtrip from Vancouver on Volendam departing on Wed. 5/24. It looks like the Lanai cabins open up to the promenade deck, and to get a private balcony, we'd need to upgrade to a Vista Suite. This would make it substantially more expensive, unless we forego the promo or go 2 weeks earlier. (Drinks and WiFi would be nice but aren't necessary, and I probably wouldn't pay extra for them. The $100 off shore excursion pp credit would be useful but for my solo mother-in-law, we'd be paying for the promo twice but only getting one person worth of benefit.) Ship is also a good bit smaller, but all it appears to be missing from the bigger ships (besides more staterooms) is Tamarind and the Music Walk venues, which I don't think we'd miss. Anyone here have experience with Volendam's Lanai cabins vs. other ships' Verandahs? How about going earlier (May 10-17)? We initially booked the week we did to get to Denali for opening week, but with that no longer a consideration, we're a little more flexible - is there usually that much sea ice that the ships can't get close to the glaciers, or would a smaller ship like Volendam have an easier time? Lots to consider. Truth be told, we'd prefer to cancel outright and wait it out, but it looks like we're stuck with the FCC since we accepted it back in 2020, and I also bought gift cards during the 20% promo last year, so we've got to use those. Thanks in advance!
  8. I totally get that. When HAL changed the date of what “was” our Volendam cruise to our Eurodam cruise and moved the embarkation date to October 30th, I was done like a dinner. I always book the dogs before I book cruises - if I don’t have flights yet I give her tentative dates and I get marked in and once the flights are in place, give her firm dates. She sold her house & was building a new one and just a few kennels. She had really pushed it to get the boys in on the days I had. October 30th was out of the question. We had not choice but to cancel - dogs have to go to “their vacation home”. In the end, it didn’t matter since we would have been cancelled anyways when HAL cancelled all Canadians (and other non U.S. citizens) on that cruise 😔

  14. IF there is a Grand Asia or Grand Pacific in 2023 it would most likely be on Volendam as she will be sailing to Alaska from Vancouver for summer 2023. She could easily reposition to LA/San Diego for such a sailing. Zaandam will most likely be doing Canada/NE cruises and be in the North Atlantic for the summer season so no need to reposition her to the west coast when Volendam is already there :)
  15. Friends of mine are on Eurodam and sent me this pic of Volendam and Zaandam parked at Corfu. Thought I would share:
  16. Good morning friends! I heard some thunder overnight so I guess we got a little rain. Today wasn't a gym day because the M-W-F group shows up and one couple ties up four machines for 30 minutes. Frustrating for the rest of us. We'll go tomorrow. DH tells me he's calling the dentist this morning because it seems a bit of a filling fell out overnight in the tooth next to the extraction. That will need repaired and he may have changed his game plan for that area after his socket heals. It may require implants. Teeth are important so whatever works best! Meanwhile DH noticed a spot on my lower back above the waistline that he thinks our dermatologist should look at. We both have an appointment with her in a month so I will definitely ask her to have that area thoroughly investigated. I had melanoma 20 years ago on my upper back so I don't take any chances. Nuts are great and healthy too. What's not to like? Clean up the world is a good idea. I try to do my part in keeping it clean and safe. Smart is very cool! Did you hear some people want to end gifted programs for our advanced students? Not fair to others? Please, spare me! The gifted program was very helpful to my son as a child. Those students need to keep advancing not lag behind their abilities. Interesting quote. And no hash for me if you don't mind. Prayers for our folks in need and cheers for those celebrating! I'm happy to see the photo of the Volendam and Zaandam sitting side by side in Corfu. Those two ships are my next two HAL "rides" in 2022 and 2023. Leave it to @cat shepardto remember a birthday! Happy birthday to @bdrcole!! We visited Huatulco, Mexico on our 2016 Westerdam Panama Canal cruise. In my photo book of that cruise I referred to it as a real gem. The area where the ships dock is developed for tourists and is near the town of La Crucecita. We enjoyed all the shops, visiting the church and a restaurant for DH's beer. But we also walked to the town center of La Crucecita. I'll post the photos separately.

  21. Guide to HAL Ship Classes - 2021 I found this guide to HAL Ship Classes to be quite good - and a bit more current as of early 2021 https://thepointsguy.com/guide/holland-america-ship-class-guide/ Gene Sloan May 23, 2021 In the wake of a major downsizing in 2020, Holland America has a relatively simple fleet. The storied, Seattle-based cruise line now operates just 10 vessels that can be bunched into just four groups. Each of these groups — known as “classes” in cruise industry lingo — is made of ships that were constructed around the same time to the same basic design. If you know one member of the group, you know them all. An introduction to Holland America ships Holland America has downsized its fleet considerably over the past year with the removal of four vessels. But it’s still one of the seven big lines that account for the majority of cruises taken by North Americans. It now has 10 ships that together offer more than 20,000 berths. In general, Holland America operates big ships. But they’re not nearly as big as the vessels operated by the six other big lines that cater to North Americans. Indeed, in some cruising circles, Holland America’s ships are referred to as “mid-size” ships (as opposed to big ships). In part, that’s because Holland America’s biggest vessels top out in size at about 100,000 tons. That’s nearly 60% smaller than the biggest ships operated by Royal Caribbean and 40% smaller than the biggest ships operated by Norwegian Cruise Line. Some of Holland America’s vessels are as small as 61,000 tons, which is as small as some of the vessels operated by much pricier, smaller lines such as Oceania Cruises or Crystal Cruises. What this means is that you’ll be in for a more intimate cruise experience on the typical Holland America ship than on the ships of such rival lines as Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Princess Cruisesand Celebrity Cruises. There will be fewer people on board, and venues may be less crowded. On the flipside, in general, you’ll find fewer venues and amenities on Holland America ships than on the ships of its competitors operating bigger vessels. If you’re looking for a big, bustling megaship with every amusement known to humans, Holland America isn’t your line. A key thing to know about Holland America ships is that there are a lot of similarities from class to class within the Holland America fleet. Unlike some lines such as Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, Holland America doesn’t always drastically change the design of its ships from class to class. Instead, Holland America usually takes an incremental approach to design changes for its new classes of ships. You’ll find a lot in common between Holland America’s Pinnacle Class of ships and Signature Class of ships, for instance. And these two classes aren’t all that different in feel than the earlier Vista Class. In general, Holland America’s biggest and most amenity-packed ships are its newest ships. If you’re looking for a Holland America cruise experience with the most possible onboard activities and venues, you’ll want to steer toward the vessels in its new Pinnacle Class. If cruising in the most intimate environment possible is your goal, you’ll want to look at Holland America’s oldest class of ship — its Rotterdam Class. Pinnacle Class Ships in class: Nieuw Statendam (2018); Koningsdam (2016); Rotterdam (coming in 2021) Size: 99,863 tons Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam. (Photo courtesy of Holland America) If you’re in the “newer is better” camp when it comes to cruise ships, this is the Holland America ship class for you. Holland America’s Pinnacle Class just began rolling out in 2016, and the two vessels in the series that have debuted so far — Nieuw Statendam and Koningsdam — are significantly younger than any other vessel in the Holland America fleet. They’re also bigger than any other vessel in the Holland America fleet and, as a result, boast more amenities. Notably, in addition to a main restaurant and casual buffet, both of the Pinnacle Class ships have five separate specialty dining venues — everything from a pan-Asian eatery and an Italian eatery to a steakhouse. That’s more than you’ll find on other Holland America ships. Pinnacle Class ships also have all of Holland America’s signature entertainment venues — something that can’t be said for the line’s older vessels. Specifically, on Pinnacle Class ships, you’ll find one of the line’ signature Music Walk live entertainment areas with a B.B. King’s Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Lincoln Center Stage (for chamber music), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock). The latter is something that’s only found on Pinnacle Class ships for now. The Pinnacle Class ships also have spectacular, state-of-the-art main theaters with push-out stages enveloped by two-story, 270-degree wraparound LED screens. The theaters are home to all sorts of additional music, dance and comedy performances. The top decks of the Pinnacle Class ships have main pool areas that can be covered by a retractable glass magrodome during inclement weather. This makes these ships a good choice when booking a cruise in a destination where the weather can be iffy. Each of the Pinnacle Class ships also has a secondary Seaview pool and lounge area at its back. In addition, each of the Pinnacle Class ships has a spa, a casino and an extra-fee outdoor lounge area called The Retreat — the latter is a feature that first debuted with the Pinnacle Class. Also new on the Pinnacle Class are Holland America’s first ocean-view cabins for solo travelers. Holland America currently has plans for three Pinnacle Class vessels in all. A third ship in the series, Rotterdam, currently is under construction at a Fincantieri shipyard in Maghera, Italy. It’s scheduled to be completed in the coming months and debut later this year. Each of the Pinnacle Class ships is designed to carry 2,650 passengers at double occupancy. Signature Class Ships in class: Nieuw Amsterdam (2010); Eurodam (2008) Size: 86,700 and 86,273 tons, respectively Holland America’s 2,104-passenger Eurodam. (Photo courtesy of Holland America) At around 87,000 tons, the Signature Class vessels are about 15% smaller than the Pinnacle Class ships, and they have a somewhat more intimate feel. They also have a tad fewer amenities. Like the Pinnacle Class ships, both of the Signature Class vessels — Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam — have a Music Walk entertainment area with a B.B. King’s Blues Club, Lincoln Center Stage and Billboard Onboard venue, for instance. But neither of the vessels has a Rolling Stone Rock Room. And you’ll find just three extra-charge restaurants on the ships — the Pinnacle Grill steakhouse, Canaletto for Italian and the pan-Asian Tamarind. Unlike the Pinnacle Class vessels, the Signature Class ships don’t have Rudi’s Sel De Mer, a brasserie created by top Holland America chef Rudi Sodamin. They also don’t have a Grand Dutch Cafe. Still, the Signature Class ships are similar in look and feel to the Pinnacle Class ships. Like the Pinnacle Class ships, the Signature Class ships have main pool areas that can be covered by retractable glass magrodomes during inclement weather and secondary pool areas at their backs. The ships are designed to carry about 2,100 passengers at double occupancy. Vista Class Ships in series: Noordam (2006); Westerdam (2004); Oosterdam (2003); Zuiderdam (2002) Size: 82,305 tons Holland America’s Westerdam sailing in Alaska. (Photo courtesy of Holland America) Comprising four vessels, this is the biggest group of Holland America ships. It’s thus the class of Holland America ship on which you are most likely to sail. In size, the vessels are just a tad smaller than the Signature Class ships — about 5% smaller, to be exact. But they are designed to carry about 9% fewer people at double occupancy. This means that they have a slightly more spacious feel than the Signature Class vessels. Their slightly smaller size, though, also means there are slightly fewer amenities. To wit: The four Vista Class vessels offer just two specialty restaurants: Holland America’s signature Pinnacle Grill steakhouse and the Italian restaurant, Canaletto. Unlike the Signature Class, there is no pan-Asian dining venue. The main entertainment offerings on the Vista Class vessels are identical to what’s found on Signature Class ships — a Music Walk entertainment area with a B.B. King’s Blues Club, Lincoln Center Stage and Billboard Onboard venue. Like the Pinnacle Class and Signature Class ships, the Vista Class ships have main pool areas that can be covered by retractable glass magrodomes during inclement weather and secondary pool areas at their backs. Rotterdam Class Ships in series: Zaandam (2000); Volendam (1999) Size: 61,396 and 61,214 tons, respectively Holland America’s Zaandam. (Photo by Ivan Pisarenko/AFP/Getty Images) The Rotterdam Class ships are significantly smaller than the rest of the ships in the Holland America fleet — about 25% to 38% smaller — and have a more cozy feel. Because of their smaller size, they also have fewer features and amenities than the ships in the other Holland America classes — particularly the ships of the newer Pinnacle and Signature classes. In general, these are ships that appeal to cruisers looking for a more intimate experience on a cruise than what you’ll find on the bigger ships. They also draw cruisers who care more about the destinations they visit on a cruise than onboard attractions. Along those lines, Holland America often deploys the Rotterdam Class ships on its more far-flung, destination-rich itineraries, including lengthy around-the-world cruises. For the coming year, for instance, Zaandam is scheduled to sail a 128-day around-the-world cruise out of Fort Lauderdale (starting on Jan. 3, 2022) that includes stops in North America, South America, Asia, Africa and Europe. On this single voyage, the vessel will sail up the Amazon River in Brazil; transit the Panama Canal; visit Hawaii, Japan, China, Vietnam, Singapore, India, Oman, Dubai, Jordan, Israel and Turkey; transit the Suez Canal; and make multiple stops in Europe. At about the same time that Zaandam is heading off around the world, Volendam will be departing for a complete circumnavigation of South America. The 74-day journey is scheduled to start on Jan. 4, 2022. Despite their smaller size, the Rotterdam Class ships offer the same number of pool areas (two) as their bigger sister vessels, with one pool area covered by a retractable glass magrodome. Each of the vessels has two specialty dining venues: Holland America’s signature Pinnacle Grill steakhouse and the Italian restaurant, Canaletto. Entertainment options on the Rotterdam Class ships include a main theater for shows, a Lincoln Center Stage for chamber music and a Billboard Onboard venue for live piano music. Bottom line The Holland America fleet is relatively easy to understand. There are just four types of ships in the Holland America fleet, and — for the most part — they aren’t too different from each other. Holland America believes strongly in offering a consistent product from ship to ship, and it doesn’t make revolutionary changes with each class of vessels it unveils. The big difference between the line’s four classes of ships is the size of the vessels in the classes. If you’re a fan of bigger ships with more amenities, you’ll probably gravitate to the new Pinnacle Class vessels. If you like your cruise ships more intimate, you’ll probably want to stick with the Rotterdam Class vessels.

We also took the tram to the seaside community of Glenelg. 🙏Prayers to all in need! Katie
