  1. I’m on the Zuiderdam right now; we were scheduled to dock in St. John’s, Newfoundland, this morning at 11am. At 8:15am, the Captain announced that two hours earlier, we had turned around per the Canadian Coast Guard to participate in the search for a person overboard from another vessel, and that we were still about two hours away from the scene. It is sunny out, the seas are relatively calm, but the air temperature is in the 50s and these are cold waters. My prayers for that person.
  2. I was looking for something on my computer and found this on one of my hard drives. It's the activities list from early 2003. 3. My wife and I are aboard the Zuiderdam for the Viking Passage, which began in Copenhagen last Friday, August 24. We had a great day in Alesund, Norway, and another in Djupivogur, Iceland, and then weather intervened. Because of the forecast for Seydisfjordur, Iceland, our tender port call there on August 29 was cancelled, and we sailed to Akureyri a day early, docking there around noon on August 29. We then spent our full scheduled day there on August 30. It was a gorgeous day, and many of us were out on our planned shore excursions. We were totally surprised to learn from our guide in the middle of the day that he’d gotten word that the ship would not be leaving that evening as scheduled. In fact, because of a severe storm moving across Iceland, we remained in Akureyri overnight (our second night there) and for the entire next day (today, August 31), anchoring out in the wee hours of this morning. When we finally left Akureyri shortly after 4:30pm today, Captain Vaartjes announced that we’d been there so long we’d been made honorary citizens, and that we’d broken the record for the most time spent by a cruise ship in that port. He may have been joking, but it would be hard to imagine any cruise ship planning to spend two and a half days here. Sadly, just as we had almost left the fjord, a medical emergency required us to turn around and disembark a passenger. I hope he’s okay. We are now on our way to Isafjordur.
  4. Discovered that HAL has changed the hours from 6a-9p to now 7a-8p. No advance warning and it is printed in the orange welcome booklet. Spa staff blamed the captain. Front Desk blamed the spa manager. Spoke to management who said it was Seattle. Given that it is in a printed book Seattle is likely the decision maker. Big change because that means that you can't exercise and have breakfast before a morning excursion. I am a little suspect that they are trying to push evening activities and sales. I was told it was because the fitness center was disturbing guests but on most ships, it is over the bridge and I sure hope they aren't sleeping on the bridge. I have encouraged everyone to complain to guest services on the ship and call Seattle upon the return - be warned! Kevin
  5. I submitted my review, of our July cruise, over a week ago but it has not been posted. So I want to list a few comments: 1. Pre cruise package had us assigned to a hotel in Copenhagen that was in the suburbs, not downtown. The Scandic Sythaven was clean and modern but not acceptable as to location and lack of normal amenities. For example: not a single drawer in the room or toilet, no shelves, and a small closet that might hold 5 or 6 garments. 2. Embarkation was orderly and delays were minimal. 3. The ship is in excellent shape and has added the music walk concept. Our Signature Suite was spacious and comfortable with new furniture (but still with crappy shower curtains). TV was limited to 6 channels of news and sports, and wifi was dreadfully slow. 4. Food was hit or miss. Some nights there were problems with entrees being lukewarm or worse. Appetizers, soups and desserts were generally excellent. Pinnacle was great and Canaletto was very good. For the first time in all our cruises, we actually found the Lido superior to the MDR. 5. Entertainment was pretty good at the music walk venues, but the production shows and stand up comic were disappointing and formulaic. The BB King group was fabulous, except for needing to expand their play list to the demands of a 10 day cruise. The Lincoln Center group was surprisingly innovative and it was hard to get a seat for their shows by the end of the cruise. 6. Excursions were pricey but generally well organized and interesting, particularly the evening tour of the Hermitage. In conclusion, I gave it a 4 out of 5, mainly because of some disappointment with the MDR.
  6. We've cruised on the Amsterdam and the Maasdam. Next summer we will be cruising on the Zuiderdam. What are the basic differences between the ships (other than number of passengers!). What will the Zuiderdam have that the Maasdam (or Amsterdam) doesn't have?
  7. Does anyone happen to know what was done to the staterooms on the Zuiderdam during the last drydock? Thanks!
  8. Has anyone posted any photos of the Crow's Nest and Library areas on Zuiderdam after the latest dry dock remodel? Thanks.
  9. OK, children are 23, 20 & 18--they have cruised DCL, RCCL, Princess, Celebrity & NCL. We all LOVE cruising. We truly aren't picky travelers--we have loved all our cruises, somethings are better than others on various lines/ships but overall we find ships to be more alike than different. Our kids enjoy meeting similar aged friends but they enjoy hanging with us & with each other. When on the ship we like some sun time, trivia, game shows, gambling, comedians, dancing. Anthem is out of New Jersey 12/29 for 8 nights to Orlando (??), Bahamas & private island. (OOPS--sorry I put 7 nights in title!) Pros: confident RCCL will be good fit; flights/dates a little more comfortable with break, larger newer ship Cons: flying in/out of NJ in Dec; cruising out of NJ in Dec. (assuming all 4 sea days are cold); Orlando as a port seems odd DH & I get balcony; kids get interior. (rooms are not deal breakers for us--rarely in a room. And balcony might be waste on this trip, but it's only $200 total more than interior for DH & I) Zuiderdam is out of FLL 12/26 for 11 nights to 7 Southern Caribbean islands. Pros: 11 nights (pro if we like the ship/line!) & it is the Southern Caribbean (5/7 new stops for us) Cons: smaller older ship; our return flight is LATE Sunday...and DH & I are supposed to work Monday and DS18 has class (we are teachers) Unknown: will we like Holland? Is 11 days OK with young adults--thinking over New Years it is OK. We all get OV. Zuiderdam is only $1250 more than the Anthem--which speaks to value (big fan of value). (was looking at a B2B on Holland for 2 weeks but the flights JUMPED while I was researching so that is off the table as it was a chunk more than either of these already) My online TA starts a huge sale tomorrow; probably more perks than anything, we shall see. Thoughts anyone??!!
  10. Kind of two different sides to the story...as there usually is. https://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-advice/travellers-stories/humiliated-couple-kicked-off-cruise/news-story/0519228f6d99330b917d6218034d6462
  11. I would love to see some of the Daily Programs for the Zuiderdam! I have found some online but they are all at least a year old. I am assuming they will be somewhat different due to the recent overhaul of the ship. Does anyone have any new ones I can see?
  12. Good day all. Can anyone tell me if the pool on the Zuiderdam is heated ? We will be cruising on her in late September on the Canada / New England route.
  13. Okay what is up with limited offer for July 2019 on Zuiderdam to Iceland and Norway. They won't let you put a deposit but only FULL PAYMENT. I am really HAL. come one. I will wait for Disney new releases then if this is the game. Any one have issues with HAL wanted full payment and a year in advance? Is this a partial charter in some way sign me very annoyed:mad:

    Zuiderdam Cabin 7001

Zuiderdam cabin 7001 - Does anyone have any experience with this cabin and location?
  15. My wife and I will be taking our first HAL cruise next month, the Viking Passage on the Zuiderdam. (We are totally excited to be trying HAL, not to mention this amazing itinerary.) I know the Zuiderdam has a traditional promenade deck (yay, I love those!), but I'm wondering where the best outdoor spots are on the upper decks for sailaways, sail-ins, scenic cruising. Is there, for example, a forward facing outdoor spot somewhere (would that be what the deck plan calls the "Observation Deck" on Deck 11)? Other spots? Any chance the Captain might open up the bow area (would that be on Deck 6?) if we are fortunate enough to make it into Prinz Christian Sund, or for the scenic cruising of the fjords in Iceland? I will definitely be spending a great deal of time exploring the ship, and I'm looking forward to doing so, but at least for that first sailaway, I thought I'd get a head start by asking where the best outdoor viewing spots are. Thanks for any info!
  16. I've read different things on the boards. Some said a couple of years ago that the unlimited plan was reasonably priced, but someone posted recently that HA has done away with the unlimited package. It's confusing. So does anyone have recent experience on Zuiderdam who could fill me in? Thanks
  17. There are seven cruise ships in Port Everglades today, Superbowl Sunday; Go Falcons! :) HAL's Koningsdam is scheduled to dock at Berth 19 (usually starboard alongside) in Midport, and is scheduled to set sail at 16:00/4:00 PM ET. She's on a charter with the party-loving RSVP group, including our own poster Boytjie aka Peter. Peter will position himself midships on the upper deck (two decks) above the Koningsdam sign upon sailaway today, and has requested a wave. K-dam's captain is Canadian Darin Bowland. Zuiderdam is at the, for HAL usual, Berth #26 (usually starboard side alongside) in PEV's Northport and is also scheduled to depart at 16:00/4:00 PM ET. Zuidy's captain is Bart Vaartjes. 18. The Oosterdam and Zuiderdam are calling on Oranjestad, Aruba, today. The Oosterdam is there from 8:00 AM till 17:00/5:00 PM AST and the Zuiderdam will arrive at 13:00/1:00 PM 23:00/100:00 PM AST. The Zuiderdam will take the spot to be vacated by the Island Princess currently docked there until 12:30 PM. The Royal Princess is also there from 8:00 AM till 19:00/7:00 PM AST.
  19. Has anyone done both Zuiderdam and Coral Princess on the 10nt partial Panamal Canal transit and can compare them for me? Looking mostly for opinions on physical ship differences, entertainment and enrichment/destination lectures. I find food and service between HAL and Princess comparable so not looking for opinions in that arena :D

    Canaletto on the Zuiderdam

Good evening everyone. We've never tried Canaletto before so though our upcoming 12-night may be a good place to start. We've loved both lunch and dinner in the Pinnacle and have never had any complaints with the MDR for dinner but I felt that on a 12-nighter it may be nice to change it up a bit. I know food is VERY subjective and Canaletto has received both raves and rants on this board but would anyone like to chime in to say if they feel it is worth it for one night of a 12 night trip, specifically on the Zuiderdam? This is a very port intensive cruise and we've assigned dining at 8.30pm every night. We prefer the late dining but I thought maybe the night we leave Estonia [4th night on the trip] would be an ideal night for an earlier dinner since we will have to be up very early for Russia the next day. How varied is the menu on a 12 night compared to a standard 7 night with HAL? I always worry I will miss something good in the MDR if I eat in one of the specialties. I usually prefer to eat the first night in a specialty restaurant if we have anytime dining but with assigned tables I like to be in the MDR the first night so we can get to know our table mates and waiters. Sorry if I've blabbered on and on haha. Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks :D
  21. Having a wonderful, relaxing cruise. First time visiting Half Moon Cay-WOW! My daughter & I loved it. Did a bit of snorkelling there. HAL provided a nice BBQ lunch. In Aruba yesterday and we both did HAL excursions. I did the Sail, snorkel, beach. The catamaran was fun & provided easy access to get back on after snorkelling. My daughter did the certified diving excursion to 2 dive spots & enjoyed it. Crew aboard the ship awesome as usual. All has been great. Off to explore Curaçao! Sent from my iPhone using Forums
  22. Our first dam ship twofer this season: The Nieuw Amsterdam arrives in Port Everglades after her first season in Alaska and the Zuiderdam continues her 10/11-day Panama Canal cruises. 23. We are on 11 day Panama Canal cruise leaving Nov 30. In Aruba from 1 until 11pm. Thinking of doing sunset cruise excursion. But wondering if Lido will still be open when we return as doubt if will want to do MDR that evening. Of course can always do room service, but am wondering if the ship might have a deck BBQ that evening for those returning later from excursions or maybe keep Lido open later than normal? Anyone been on this cruise who can give some insight? Thanks. Jane
  24. Are there shelves as well as hanging space in the verandah cabin closets on the Zuiderdam? I was looking at the video of those cabins and there is very little counter or cupboard space. I just can't remember inside the Vista Class verandah closets. (That was one thing we really liked in the Carnival Sunshine cabin - lots and lots of storage)
