  1. We have previously "found our home" with the Adagio group (twice a piano/violin duo, and the last trip an actual string quartet). Have they been replaced by "Lincoln Center Stage?" And is LCS as intimate as the Adagio was? I loved sitting in a small room (a "chamber") listening to chamber music. It was perfect. We'll be on the Zuiderdam in June, if that makes a difference. If it's Lincoln Center Stage, is it in a smaller room with casual seating, or more concert seating? Just prepping my expectations. Barb ("Feathers")
  2. You posted this under a Zuiderdam question: "We also were able to get one of the "bump out" cabins, in which the cabin and balcony angles out. This should give us a bit more space in the cabin, but more importantly will allow us a better forward view." What are the "bump out" cabin numbers? Did you post a review?
  3. Sorry, i'm sure this has been answered many times in other threads, but of course now that i need it i can't find it! We're leaving this Sunday, our first HAL cruise. Can someone explain the boarding process for me? Our boarding passes say 1 pm. Is this a "suggested" time for everyone, or do they assign staggered check-in times? We've only sailed on Carnival before, and for them you select your boarding time and everybody is staggered starting at about 11 am. I'd like to know whether we can arrive earlier and be allowed to board, or will we have to wait until at least 1? Thanks in advance for your help!
  4. Reporting live from Zuiderdam on second-to-last day of New Year's cruise. I have personally cruised around 10 times on Costa/Carnival/NCL/Celebrity. This is our second HAL Holiday cruise (last year on Eurodam for New Year's cruise which we loved). I am a late 30s professional traveling with my wife, two kids 5 and 8 years old, and 2 grandparents. Ship is in very good shape, service is good and food has been very acceptable in the dining room (a few misses here and there and somewhat a step down from Eurodam last year but still quite enjoyable overall). Although the weather has not fully cooperated, we have also enjoyed the itinerary. Why choose HAL for a family cruise? We tend to enjoy dining in the dining room at set times, dress up for gala nights (3 generations in tuxedos and long dresses!) and enjoy a more traditional cruising experience. My parents also enjoy the HAL experience and this is a way to spend quality time together. Finally, my wife and I enjoy BB King Blues Club and like to go dance there at night after the show. I know my comments will not rally all of you, but I have found the intolerance from cruisers toward kids much more prevalent this year. Hearing a few loud comments such as "when are we going to throw all of the kids overboard?". The front desk also confirmed that one of the most frequent complaint has been around the number of kids onboard. We did not feel this resentment last year on Eurodam. Frankly, my (perhaps biased) judgment is that kids have generally been well behaved and supervised throughout the cruise. Also, my feeling is that if you don't like kids, you should not pick a cruise during an important school break, or perhaps go higher scale with Seabourn, Oceania or Crystal. Another related disappointment is that management decided to reserve the full aft pool area to “Adults Only”. This was an area that we frequented daily last year on Eurodam for Al fresco breakfast or lunch, and this was not possible this year. Added to that the fact that the roof cover over the midship pool was almost always closed (never fully open), we have not been able to spend any quality time outside getting some of the ocean breeze or direct sun exposure. Despite these important shortcomings, we have had a pleasant cruise but wish we would have felt more “on a ship” and not in a closed off, roofed up, air conditioned hotel… We thought we had found a cruise product that suited our family following the Eurodam cruise last year, but we will likely need to go back to the drawing board... All the best to all of you for 2019! Fred

  6. We all read questions we thing are silly, or trivial....it's my turn to ask one here. How is the selection and variety of regular TV on the Zuiderdam? As a frequent cruiser on Royal, I find that by the middle of the week we are ready to rip the TV off the wall because they keep replaying the same episodes of lame sitcoms and other such shows. And before we get the "they don't want you to spend your time in the room" response, I know that but we tend to watch at night and the TV is background noise for us. Anyone have any insights into this silly question? Thanks in advance!
  7. My parents and I are looking at going on the Quebec City - Whales and Fall Colour Cruise on September 12th to 27th. We are looking at booking a room for 4 people but told by are Travel Agent that HAL can bump us to a 3 person cabin. Wanting others thoughts on decks 4, 5, 6, and 10. What cabins would you avoid if choosing a 3 person cabin. We would really like a 4 but don’t want to be bumped to a 3 with no say where we are on the ship along with what side. We prefer Starboard. Thank you in advance ☺️
  8. Can anyone advise if hangouts works on the middle tier plan (or recommend a different WiFi-Calling app on that plan) What was the usual / typical call quality?
  9. Does anyone have a picture of what a roll-in shower is like? My hubby has hip troubles and would have issues entering a step in tub to shower. He is not officially handicapped but does walk with a unusual gait. Would I be able to book a cabin (looking at VA8032) that has a roll-in shower or are they saved for wheelchair guests?

  11. Our final payment is not due until March 2019. Checking the fares, there has been a price drop of $616 for our cabin type. I contacted my TA to grab the discount for us. The response: HAL will not refund the difference unless we cancel, pay the cancellation fee, and then rebook. Can I deal directly with HAL on this issue? What would be the best way to get this price drop refund approved?

  14. @*Miss G* - This might be one for you, but if anyone's been on the 10 or 11 day S. Caribbean, that would be even better. Does anyone happen to know what the performance times are for the Lincoln Center Stage on the Zuiderdam? We're sailing with my wife's dad for Christmas, and he really enjoyed them on the Eurodam. Being a good son-in-law, I want to make sure we block out time to see them. Thanks!

  16. Do they still offer breakfast in the Pinnacle Grill for (Neptune) suite guests? Thanks
  17. This was my third HAL cruise in the past 3 years. Overall, I enjoyed it. There were some serious flaws, and some expected impressive wins. If you have any questions, I will do my best to answer them. SHIP- This is an older vessel, I was surprised by how some things were quite shabby especially since it was in dry dock recently. The wooden railings were very worn, the carpets were tattered and showing wear in the hallways especially. While onboard they seemed to be replacing all the stairs carpeting, and would do it at odd times. For example during dinner service one night they were replacing carpet between floors leading to the MDR floors, forcing everyone to take the elevator for the final flight(s) down? Strange. The furnishings were all nice and up-to-date. I especially liked the chairs and high tops in the Gallery Bar. CABIN- Had a veranda, aft. It had a very deep balcony, nice sized. New flat screen wall mounted TV, bathroom not updated. Beds are wonderful as ever, as they have been on HAL cruises in the past. Room was very clean and of course well kept by attendant. DINING- Main Dining Room was run very smooth, better than other cruises I've been on recently. We had any time dining, and never waited for a table regardless of size requested. The breakfast and lunch food was noticeably better than the dinner in regards to timing, temperature of food, and presentation. The lack of vegetarian main menu items was glaring. They offered only one entrée a night that was veg on main menu and it was either a pasta or a grain/veg combo every single night all 11 days. That was annoying. The Canaletto had great food, worth the upcharge. The Dive-In was my favorite and the Asia distant lands counter in the Lido was my 2nd favorite for casual dining. In room dining was hit or miss with the food quality, but it was always on time and we had no temperature problems. Wrote in things on breakfast card, and all but once we got what we asked for. ENTERTAINMENT- Only went to Mainstage a few times, it was better than years past but we went only on nights they had special performers. Don't care for the ships singers/dancers. Lincoln Center Stage was top-notch, each performance was only a half hour. America's Test Kitchen was good when the menu was strong. One class was tomato soup and grilled cheese; I don't need to hear how to make that or improve it. Very few O magazine events. Many sales pitches were listed as activities-- no thanks. Don't put in a event for me to attend and find out they are just trying to get me to go to the spa or pay for a trainer, or buy some jewelry or buy some art. Annoying and beneath HAL. SERVICE- Best we have had. PORTS- Great. Enjoyed each stop. EXC staff was dismal and some ports seriously lacked any good options so we went with private tours for one port. I prefer to book through ship. CHILDREN- very very few on ship. Probably less than 10. CROWDS- Ship felt overly crowded on sea days. Port days it felt especially empty and lacked things to do.
  18. Seeing the Panama Canal has long been on my bucket list. We were able to experience it from Nov 4 - 14 on the Zuiderdam. It was a great trip even if the azipod had problems at the end. I journaled the trip at https://mmmtravelmemories.com/ with some pictures. If you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer.
  19. Seems to be a lack of clarity regarding casino smoking ban (or not) on Zuiderdam and Westerdam. I booked a cruise for next month on Zuiderdam when policy on HAL website said Eurodam, Oosterdam as well as Zuiderdam and Westerdam were smoke free. Now when I look it appears that Zuiderdam and Westerdam are not included in smoke free casino list when I go to page 16 of Q & A PDF on HAL website. Can anyone tell me from personal experience whether Zuiderdam casino is smoke free?
  20. Zuiderdam will be in Port Everglades from 0830 (surprisingly late???)-1700 at Pier 26 (port to). She will be doing an 11-day Panama Canal Sunfarer cruise. She is the only ship in port. November 14 Fort Lauderdale, FL November 15 Half Moon Cay, Bahamas November 16 At Sea November 17 Aruba November 18 Curacao November 19 At Sea November 20 Cartagena, Colombia November 21 Panama Canal (Partial Transit) (Cruising) November 21 Colon, Panama November 22 Puerto Limon, Costa Rica November 23 At Sea November 24 At Sea November 25 Fort Lauderdale, FL The PTZtv webcams can be found at https://www.ftlauderdalewebcam.com and https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com . Also, Rotterdam will be in Aruba from 0700-1600. https://www.portarubawebcam.com For the addicts: Rotterdam will be in Key West on Friday, 11/16 from 0800-1700. https://www.keywestharborwebcam.com Next up: Oosterdam on Saturday (11/17).
  21. We are looking at a cruise on Zuiderdam in Feb 2019. We have never stayed in a cabin that was "up front" but are considering either 4018 or 4017. Neither of us have ever experienced motion sickness but we are wondering if anyone can offer any feedback regarding motion in these rooms. The cruise is a 10 day partial canal voyage. Any feedback would be helpful.
  22. My DH and I just arrived home from our first HAL cruise, Quebec City to Fort Lauderdale on Zuiderdam. We’ve been land travelers for many years, and only recently started cruising. This is cruise #3...the first a multigenerational Alaska Cruise on Royal Caribbean and the second a transatlantic on Regent. Obviously two very different experiences, but both good for the audiences we were traveling with. The HAL cruise added a new dimension to our cruise experiences. All in all we had a very good time. It was difficult not to compare the cruise lines and respective experiences at least a little, but we tried to look at the new cruise line and ship for their own merits. The service was excellent...from start to finish...in every venue! The crew appeared to be genuinely happy to be there and their inevitable response of “my pleasure” seemed genuine. A number of crew members (beyond our cabin stewards and MDR waiters) got to know our names and greeted us warmly whenever we saw them. That made for a more personal experience. Our Signature Suite was lovely, spacious, well appointed and always taken care of by our wonderful stewards. We were especially impressed by the number of outlets and USB ports. More than enough for our purposes. The separate shower was pretty tight, but tub shower was nice. We both liked the double sinks, bath amenities and huge bath towels! I liked the vanity for doing my hair and make up. The balcony was very spacious, though the weather was too cool most of the trip to make much use of it. The food ranged from acceptable to very good. We enjoyed the dinner experience in the dining room most evenings, but were happy there was a casual venue at the Lido, on a couple nights we just felt like having a quick bite. We enjoyed coffee and fruit each morning in our room, followed by breakfast some days at the Lido and others in the dining room. Both were good, with plenty of choices. Lunch was either at Lido or Dive In. The burgers at DI were amazing! And the salad bar was fresh, with so many delicious choices. I also loved the made to order pasta and DH enjoyed the carved meats. We both loved all the delicious breads! If we had one food complaint it would be the temperature of food in the dining room at times. It wasn’t always as hot as it should be. One thing I liked very much was the crew in Lido serving most of the food. Many less hands handling utensils! And much of what was self serve was already plated. Entertainment was quite good, with many different venues for different tastes. We most enjoyed Lincoln Center Stage and Billboard Onboard. Excellent musicians in both! The main stage shows were hit or miss for us. We loved the Planet Earth production! The Zuiderdam dancers/singers were sometimes very good, sometimes a little off. We enjoyed some movies and especially the BBC Planet Earth documentaries. The screening room was great! But you needed to arrive early because it usually filled up. We missed having a lecturer....DH especially likes that. The interdenominational church service on a Sunday at sea was so well attended we had to bring in more chairs. Two ministers on board did a great job with the service. I’ve read comments from those who don’t like the changes in the Crow’s Nest. But we thought it was a warm and inviting space, though it could get very crowded on sea days. But since there were so many public spaces, we never lacked for a place to sit, read or just watch the world go by. The interactive maps in Explorer were fun and we often saw them being used. Gale force winds forced us to miss the port at Charlottetown PEI, which was disappointing. But we appreciated that the captain put the safety of the passengers first. We liked his daily reports but appreciated that there were not announcements continuously throughout the day like there were on Royal Caribbean. We enjoyed a Q and A with the captain as well as a couple personal interactions and found him friendly, humorous and above all, capable. The cruise director Sabine was very personable and approachable. And her staff seemed to follow her lead. We took a few HAL excursions and did our own thing in a couple other ports. The excursions were very well done, with excellent guides. Perhaps we were fortunate in that regard. I’d highly recommend “Intimate Look at Acadia National Park” in Bar Harbor. We appreciated that there was generally some form of shuttle transportation in most ports for those who wanted to explore on their own. Based on this experience we wouldn’t hesitate to sail HAL again. Judy
