  1. The only ship in port today is a blue hulled beauty. So all the focus should be on her 🙂 Should be a fun itinerary for those on board. Always a nice one. 4. We have moved up to one for the March 20 cruise for about $200 from a veranda. Please tell me what I am gaining. Thank you
  5. We are going on our first HAL cruise , and will be in a Neptune suite. I saw some pics online and it doesn't look like there is a bar in there? I have been in suite lounges on Royal...some of them have full bars, an some have decent food. Is the Neptune Lounge on the Zuiderdam more of just a hangout kind of place with a concierge, and some finger foods, and that's about it? Thanks!
  6. I just tried to open Captain Albert's Weblog but won't open. Crazy computer. Do not know what to do. Has someone read his blog he posted yesterday and does he say why the late departure.

  15. I am starting this thread to raise awareness of the very poorly configured Veranda Balcony Cabins on the Zuiderdam. Holland America allows passengers of up to 4 passengers to book these cabins. However, unless you do not care to have access to the balcony (which I believe is the sole reason most of us pay the increased cost to have a balcony cabin) or the bar fridge and vanity, I would recommend saving your money and book an Ocean View or Interior cabin. We are a family of 3. My daughter, grandson (11) and I, were on the 10 day Holiday cruise this December 16, 2018. In order to have the 3rd bed, they had to remove furniture from the cabin for the duration of the cruise and entirely block access to the balcony door, bar fridge and vanity. The first front desk customer service we spoke to, advised the cabin accommodates up to 4 passengers. This is impossible with 2 single beds and a love-seat pull out single sofa bed all wall to wall with no drop down for a 4th. Another family of 3 we met on this cruise had the same type of cabin and issues. We were all very disappointed after paying the extra cost to have a balcony cabin with no access to the balcony. Has anyone else experienced the same on the Zuiderdam or any other Holland America or other cruise line ships?
  16. Hello. I have until the end of the day to book my cruise to the Panama Canal on the Zuiderdam. This will be my second cruise. I was concerned about noise on the first, and was delightfully surprised and how quiet and almost soundproof the staterooms were. This time, I have a connecting stateroom. From the posts I have read, I feel confident that the rooms are still quiet, and there is not much to worry about. I see however, on the deck plan, that BB King's Blues Club is on Deck Two, and I am concerned about music drifting through at night, down to the deck I am on, Main Deck #1. Anybody have any experience or feedback on this. I am sensitive to noise in hotels etc.., and just thought I'd check this out before booking. I appreciate any advice. Thank you!:)
  17. Sorry, i'm sure this has been answered many times in other threads, but of course now that i need it i can't find it! We're leaving this Sunday, our first HAL cruise. Can someone explain the boarding process for me? Our boarding passes say 1 pm. Is this a "suggested" time for everyone, or do they assign staggered check-in times? We've only sailed on Carnival before, and for them you select your boarding time and everybody is staggered starting at about 11 am. I'd like to know whether we can arrive earlier and be allowed to board, or will we have to wait until at least 1? Thanks in advance for your help!
  18. We have previously "found our home" with the Adagio group (twice a piano/violin duo, and the last trip an actual string quartet). Have they been replaced by "Lincoln Center Stage?" And is LCS as intimate as the Adagio was? I loved sitting in a small room (a "chamber") listening to chamber music. It was perfect. We'll be on the Zuiderdam in June, if that makes a difference. If it's Lincoln Center Stage, is it in a smaller room with casual seating, or more concert seating? Just prepping my expectations. Barb ("Feathers")
  19. You posted this under a Zuiderdam question: "We also were able to get one of the "bump out" cabins, in which the cabin and balcony angles out. This should give us a bit more space in the cabin, but more importantly will allow us a better forward view." What are the "bump out" cabin numbers? Did you post a review?
  20. Reporting live from Zuiderdam on second-to-last day of New Year's cruise. I have personally cruised around 10 times on Costa/Carnival/NCL/Celebrity. This is our second HAL Holiday cruise (last year on Eurodam for New Year's cruise which we loved). I am a late 30s professional traveling with my wife, two kids 5 and 8 years old, and 2 grandparents. Ship is in very good shape, service is good and food has been very acceptable in the dining room (a few misses here and there and somewhat a step down from Eurodam last year but still quite enjoyable overall). Although the weather has not fully cooperated, we have also enjoyed the itinerary. Why choose HAL for a family cruise? We tend to enjoy dining in the dining room at set times, dress up for gala nights (3 generations in tuxedos and long dresses!) and enjoy a more traditional cruising experience. My parents also enjoy the HAL experience and this is a way to spend quality time together. Finally, my wife and I enjoy BB King Blues Club and like to go dance there at night after the show. I know my comments will not rally all of you, but I have found the intolerance from cruisers toward kids much more prevalent this year. Hearing a few loud comments such as "when are we going to throw all of the kids overboard?". The front desk also confirmed that one of the most frequent complaint has been around the number of kids onboard. We did not feel this resentment last year on Eurodam. Frankly, my (perhaps biased) judgment is that kids have generally been well behaved and supervised throughout the cruise. Also, my feeling is that if you don't like kids, you should not pick a cruise during an important school break, or perhaps go higher scale with Seabourn, Oceania or Crystal. Another related disappointment is that management decided to reserve the full aft pool area to “Adults Only”. This was an area that we frequented daily last year on Eurodam for Al fresco breakfast or lunch, and this was not possible this year. Added to that the fact that the roof cover over the midship pool was almost always closed (never fully open), we have not been able to spend any quality time outside getting some of the ocean breeze or direct sun exposure. Despite these important shortcomings, we have had a pleasant cruise but wish we would have felt more “on a ship” and not in a closed off, roofed up, air conditioned hotel… We thought we had found a cruise product that suited our family following the Eurodam cruise last year, but we will likely need to go back to the drawing board... All the best to all of you for 2019! Fred

  22. My parents and I are looking at going on the Quebec City - Whales and Fall Colour Cruise on September 12th to 27th. We are looking at booking a room for 4 people but told by are Travel Agent that HAL can bump us to a 3 person cabin. Wanting others thoughts on decks 4, 5, 6, and 10. What cabins would you avoid if choosing a 3 person cabin. We would really like a 4 but don’t want to be bumped to a 3 with no say where we are on the ship along with what side. We prefer Starboard. Thank you in advance ☺️
