  2. If I had to guess how many kids were on this cruise, I'd say somewhere between 20-30. But remember, this was late September. June will be a different story. About 5 years ago, I cruised Zuiderdam to Alaska in July and I seem to remember there being many more. I do not have kids so can't give first hand testimony, but I will say that HAL probably isn't the best choice with kids. Then again, I'm not sure what the Club HAL activities look like. You and he may very well love it.
  3. On a 12 day cruise on the Zuiderdam starting Sept. 15th, we had 2 gala nights. I would guess you would have 2 also.

  5. Yes. They have built a 47k version of a Vista-based "family" (Zuiderdam to QE). It's almost a scale copy with some smart enhancements. Happy cruising!
  6. This was my blog on the Voyage of the Vikings 2019: If you read through the blog, you will see weaknesses like, poor entertainment, no flowers on the lido tables, lamps that didn't light instead of flowers on the MDR tables, no one to do trivia games, etc. But there are also photos of us with the captain, dining staff and room stewards, and lots of great times on the Zuiderdam too! Did I enjoy the cruise? Absolutely yes. Overall, was it as good as Voyage of the Vikings 2018? No
  7. Same here - same year. Wonder if it was the same cruise? There were a lot of sick people at the end, even staff/crew. I couldn't even stay awake on my flight home, did nothing but sleep for 5 days after I got home and two strong rounds of antibiotics. I wondered if it was because the Zuiderdam had just come out of drydock the day before the cruise and the systems had been shut down for a bit. It was well into the New Year before I was really feeling better.
  8. As we were waiting in our cabin to disembark the Zuiderdam last Friday, there were men cleaning our balcony and washing down the window and drying it. We did notice dirty windows in the MDR and some with cracks in them. We expect that will be addressed when the ship goes to dry dock in December. Thank you John for the explanation and the pictures.
  9. We stayed in a Neptune Suite on the Nieuw Amsterdam last year, and they had a lot of outlets and USBs. Also on the Zuiderdam (Signature Suite). I bought an international adapter set for both my iPad and Kindle, and we utilize all outlets!
  10. When I read the subject line of this post, my thoughts were "after enjoying our wonderful time on the Zuiderdam again this year, what could have gone so wrong since we disembarked". However, after reading the pax list of concerns, there wasn't anything on the list that was the fault of the ship or HAL. Looking forward to our next HAL adventure.
  11. You are correct (wish I could have just cut'n'pasted part of the 2nd paragraph). People rent the scooters for their trips due to all the walking (and even if you stay on board, there is a lot) and they aren't used to them.... and people that aren't used to being around scooters don't realize that they can't stop on a dime. I don't think most are being "reckless" but just aren't used to it. I saw an older lady break down in tears and apologizing over and over on the Zuiderdam because she couldn't get it turned around quickly enough and was holding a few folks up near the elevator. I felt bad for her..... I think it is great that HAL is a cruiseline that is more suited for those that aren't as mobile - on some cruise lines they'd be run over and trampled on the 1st day.
  12. NO SIGNS ON THE ZUIDERDAM CRUISE. I WOULD HAVE SEEN THEM AND POINTED THEM OUT CLEARLY TO THE PEOPLE I GOT INTO ARGUMENTS WITH . NO SIGNS.

  14. I wonder what ship I was on? I got off the Zuiderdam 30 July after sailing on her for 8 1/2 months. It was one of the best experiences I have had. The Officers and crew where the best and the ship meticulously maintained. I have sailed on 12 World Voyages with Holland America and 6 Grand Asia's and 2 Voyage of the Vikings. My time on the Zuiderdam ranks up with the best of the Grand Voyages.
  15. I was on the September 15th cruise on Zuiderdam from Quebec to NYC. I found the service on the ship to be excellent, except for one rude person in shore excursions who charged us for an excursion I hadn't taken. I suggest checking your account onboard the TV in the stateroom every few days. Flowers, small vases did appear on our table toward the end of the cruise and I began to notice them in various venues on the ship after initially not seeing any. The stewards in the dinning room are overworked but they do an excellent job. My steward knew I was watching carbs and always brought me extra veggies without my having to ask. As far as the condition of the ship, one of the people working in the Lido said they were affected by a storm and that something was wrong with some of the tiles in the Lido and they would be working on it during the upcoming drydock. The three comedy shows we saw in the main showroom were excellent. Lincoln Center on Stage was fabulous and always so well attended people sat listening in the lounge outside. I didn't like that Billboard on line was so loud that you could hear it in the show lounge. Can't really say I missed the big production shows because I never thought they were great, but they do need to do more entertainment in the show lounge. I have seen many pails and leaks on Veendam and Maasdam and while I didn't see any this cruise, my husband did. She's showing her ae and will get repaired on the drydock in December. I wouldn't hesitate to sail Zuiderdam again. Service from the top down was excellent.
  16. I was on the same Zuiderdam cruise. Yes, the OP is correct about the computers. I bought the internet package and had some difficulty with it the first two days. A lovely lady at the Mariner reception who was from customer service helped me out. The following morning, I went down to the man who was in charge of the internet and he explained how it works and I never had any more trouble, and yes, there are only a few computers. There were several news stations (including MSNBC and FOX and some British and world wide stations as well as movies on the TV. No problem there. The captain did make mention at dinner one night that many people had come down with the flu and colds. He never said how many, but I figured it was enough and more than 25 to make the announcement. My hands were just about raw from how much washing I did. In the evenings toward the end of the cruise, the coughing was quite evident and I just kept removing myself from the venue or people who were sick. It seems as though that cruise cough is always accompanying me on any cruise I go on, but I'm happy to say my husband and I are well. As I looked around at the people on the cruise using scooters (4 including me) canes, wheel chairs(about 6) and walking sticks, I was reminded of my first HAL cruise where the numbers far outweighed that amount. The average age was about 75, younger than most HAL cruises I've been on and no children that I saw because school had started. Never eating anything but a salad for lunch at the Lido, I can't comment on the lines. Service up there was outstanding and the variety of food was excellent. We never bought a drink package so I can't comment. Yes, I'm using a scooter because I can't walk long distances.I didn't go on any of the HAL tours because I didn't want to inconvenience anyone.I usually hire a small van or taxi and tour with 2 other people. It's never been an issue. I was really amazed at how many people held the elevator doors for me and they could not have been nicer about it. I'm out and about because I refuse to let my disability keep me home. Someday, OP, you too may grow old and need some help. I hope people will be as accommodating to you as they were to me. This cruise was everything I would have wanted and more. Perhaps OP has made the right decision to stay away. I can't imagine fighting over line in the Lido and am glad I didn't witness it.
  17. We were on the Zuiderdam in April. We did not have a drink package, but dined with a lovely couple who did. What they found strange is that while the package did not include a glass of champagne, they could order mimosa's to their heart's content.
  18. i thought the Zuiderdam had an on demand in room entertainment system?
  19. Let me start off by saying this is our 3rd H A cruise and we really do love the line. Our first 2 cruises with them were flawless and we really loved it. This one "NOT SO MUCH". Here's my problem with them anymore in no special order: They use to have an actual "Internet Room" with about 15 to 20 computers-No More. They now have 3 computers and the guy in charge of it said "Oh everybody brings their own devices now". My smartphone does not have that big of a screen so this made me very UNHAPPY. Plus it was incredibly SLOW and down about 40% of the time. 2. The TV channels were once again "HORRENDOUS". I think we got 3 news channels and 3 other worthless channels. Quite frustrating on a 13 day cruise. 3. The DRINK PACKAGE---ITS A RIPOFF--HERE ME OUT-- No one told us that the dollar limit is $11 per drink. My wife and myself like Moscato wine and the only Moscato was priced at $12 a glass. I asked the Head Wine Stewart if I could just pay the one dollar difference and he said NO SIR as he would have to charge me the full $12 for a glass on that. Iam going to write a nice letter to Orlando on this as its simply RIDICULOUS. 4. We prefer on almost all occasions to have lunch and dinner up on the Lido Deck #9 and just go to the Bistro. Now this proved to be another frustrating experience. Here's what happens almost all the time. We would get in line and work our way around from the bread to the cheese to the soup and finally the place where they offer the 5 or 6 entrees. But here's the problem, you are "patiently" waiting in line thinking that your turn is just about upon you when the old geezers just walk up the the 6 entrees and crowd their way into the line and order what they want. In other words "NO MANNERS and NO ORGANIZATION" from H.A. either. This happened "daily" and I got into a couple of arguments with some of these people "continually crowding" their way in front of the line. It was quite DISGUSTING. Like "Pigs at the Trough". Then about half way thru the cruise it was reported that about 25 people had come down with the "flu". So the last 4 or 5 days everybody was "hacking, coughing, weezing, and blowing their snoz". I thought I was going to escape the situation but when we got home friday night I was stuffy and had a really bad cold. One last thing, my wife and myself decided that we are still "Too Young" for H.A. cruises. We are in the mid 60's and I would just guess that the average age of this cruise was between 75 and 80 years of age. It was like a "GERIATRIC WOODSTOCK"--I have never seen so many scooters, walkers, canes, poles, and wheel chairs in my life. We have decided to "Take a Break" and not cruise with H.A. for atleast 3 or 4 years. Enough is enough. One last thing, we signed up and took 9 shore excursions with the ship. Nothing like 30% of the 52 occupants coughing and hacking for your 5 hour tour and then taking 20 minutes or longer to get everybody on and off the bus at every stop. Just need a break and won't cruise with H.A. for a few years. We were on the Sept. 15th "Colors of Canada" cruise just for the record. Beautiful sites and I will say the food was great as it always is. Service from H.A. is always outstanding.
  20. I have to agree with you, Hank. This cruise was changed from the Rotterdam to the Zuiderdam MONTHS ago. There should have been ample time to do the preparations and planning. An excuse is usually another name for passing the buck. I suspect the horrible toilet paper (a small issue, I know) was because they didn't order enough. It was fine when we started and changed mid cruise. I also suspect that the stuff we were given, which was truly awful, is what they usually use for the crew. Sad. The captain did give good updates a couple of times a day. I did see him on the dock after the first couple of weeks. I never saw him smile or talk to anyone but we usually get off and go and don't linger around the dock area. When we approached the travel host to ask where the taxi stand was his comment was "you should pay for the Holland America shuttle". (which was more than the taxis we took) Our friends told him that the last time they did that they waited 2 hours at the other end to get back. His answer was a hmmph and turned his back on us. He mentioned more than once that we should be spending money on drinks, tours, in the shops, etc. I guess that turned me off completely to anything that may have been good. I hope that Seattle isn't forcing the captains to be sales agents. Our dinners always took 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours. I don't know how you could finish in 45 minutes unless you went to open seating when the doors open. There were a couple guys that served in the Lido that were singing every day. Good for them. That's how I remember all of them being in the past before all the work was piled on.

  22. DH and I were on the Voyage of the Vikings in 2018 (Rotterdam) and in 2019 (Zuiderdam). While we enjoyed both cruises, they were totally different. My survey was not very kind after our 2019 Voyage. I agree with the OP except in two areas: 1. We liked the captain, and saw him often. But I do recall three times he mention that we should buy a drink! Not sure if that was coming from the Hotel Director (that we never saw) or what. 2. We had a great service in the dining room. Our major disappointment was the difference in the food. Maybe we were spoiled in 2018 when lobster (as much as you wanted) was served every Gala night. Shrimp cocktail was on the menu nearly every other night in the MDR. This year, lobster was on the Gala Dinner menu just twice. However, you could purchase lobster any night for an uncharge of $25pp. Our waiter would get a special dinner or some time off for every lobster he "sold"! Another disappointment was the Cruise Director and Assistant Cruise Director (both apparently weak or novices). If one of them had a day off, didn't feel well, had dinner in the MDR, etc. there was no one else to take over for them. Many times the main stage entertainment started and/or ended by itself - no introduction and/or no wrap up. The Assistant Cruise Director did both afternoon and evening trivia. But a few times she wasn't available so trivia was cancelled.. In past years the librarian or a singer could read trivia questions. But there is no one else anymore! How about someone from guest relations or the purser perhaps? And as we disembarked, expecting to finally see the Hotel Director, and the Cruise Director, only a waiter and two women from the front desk were there to say good-bye. The entertainment was a joke. Several nights we had to decide whether to see a movie on the big screen or back in our cabin. Either some talent didn't show up or HAL in Seattle dropped the ball. (Someone mentioned the need to get used to less cocktail parties; there were none......none in 35 days.) I could mention more, but overall we had a great time on the Zuiderdam. One thing that was better in 2019 than 2018 were the larger tenders. Thus the process went faster and it also changed for 4 and 5 stars. In 2018 every one had to get a tender ticket and wait until your number was called. In 2019, 4 and 5 stars could go to the Ocean Bar, get a ticket, and then go directly to the tender! The difference from one year to another year was huge. We had talked to Hotel Director Darren 5 months before the cruise (cocktail party on Panama Canal cruise on the Zuiderdam) about how much we enjoyed the food on the Rotterdam in 2018. We all hoped it would be just as good this time. But this time we had the Lobster at a $25 uncharge. I have to wonder who made that decision? and why?
  23. When I needed cash on the Nieuw Amsterdam (2018), Oosterdam, Noordam and Zuiderdam I got it from the front desk. No ATMs. Last cruise was May 2019. ~Nancy
  24. Just got off the Zuiderdam where we had 2 gala nights. I told my husband he didn't need a suit or jacket this time. he felt very underdressed because the majority of men were wearing jackets and ties. I saw a few gowns, but most of the women were wearing fancy tops with pants. I think those who still like to dress up do. even though it's not required anymore. it looked very nice.
  25. My wife and I also sailed on the above mentioned Voyage of the Vikings. Overall, we were very pleased with our experience and would highly recommend the cruise to others. We found the crew to be especially friendly and helpful. Those working on the Lido Deck seemed to make a strong effort to be both helpful and cheerful. They also seemed to enjoy each others company. Our cabin attendants were outstanding. We found the Captain to be exceptional. He was an excellent communicator and was highly visible and friendly around the ship. He also seemed to make all the right decisions regarding the safety of the ship and the passengers, when we encountered questionable weather conditions. It must have been especially challenging and exhausting to sail through Iceberg Alley with dense fog. I can echo the comments of others when it came to Jessica our Travel Director. She was outstanding! The best! We found the Zuiderdam to be in good to excellent condition considering her age and the daily wear and tear. We especially liked her new decor. The evening shows were a hit or miss. This and the food are always a subjective discussion. Generally, we liked the food but, at times, the service was a bit slow in the main dining room. I was particularly pleased to have the Screening Room up and running. I always enjoy a good movie on the big screen and especially in the evenings. Holland America consistently has the best itineraries. The Voyage of the Vikings didn't disappoint. I can see why so many passengers have repeated this particular cruise. I just wish we had seen a polar bear or two floating by on an ice flow. Prince Christian Sund made the trip all worth it. We experienced two spectacular days of scenic cruising through the Sund, which showed off the incredible beauty of the passage. We enjoyed all of the ports of call, even if the weather wasn't always the best. In sum, we had a terrific cruise!
