  1. We were almost "stuck" with a guarantee veranda cabin on the Zuiderdam. We were assigned cabin VD6006, all the way forward on deck 6. Our TA thought she was doing us a favor and complained to HAL and asked for a better cabin. HAL gave us VA5098. We thanked our TA, but started checking the pictures of the VA deck 5 mid-ship cabins on cruise deck plans dot com. What a disappointment !! The balconies are not very deep because the ship narrows in that area to accommodate the lifeboats. They shrink the cabins a bit and the balconies. Also, because the lifeboats are suspended from their davits just below these veranda cabins, there is what I consider a partially obstructed view. If you are in your cabin looking out, the view is great. But if you go out on the balcony and lean on the railing and look down, all you see are the tops of the huge orange lifeboats. If you want to checkout a sail-away band on the dock, you won't see them. Same for any dolphins swimming alongside the ship. These mid-ship deck 5 cabins on Vista Class ships used to be a much lower grade veranda cabin. But HAL needed verandas to upgrade guarantees to, and some people think that mid-ships cabins are superior due to less motion in rough seas,, so HAL re-classed these cabins to VA and raised the prices. After seeing the pictures, we told out TA, "thanks but no thanks" and she got HAL to move us back to VD6006, which was wonderful for a Med & Trans-Atlantic cruise.
  2. Actually we have sailed a few times on the Oosterdam. I had to edit my post as I had the Zuiderdam in twice.
  3. I have sailed on the old Ryndam, Veendam, Statendam, Maasdam, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Volendam, Zaandam, Noordam, Zuiderdam, Westerdam, Oosterdam, Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, the Old Noordam and the Old Nieuw Amsterdam.
  4. We are booked on the Zuiderdam for Oct 20 - Partial transit. We would like to do an excursion either in Gatun Lake or Puerto Limon. The HAL excursions we are considering sound somewhat similar but wondered if anyone had been on either or both and have a preference. We are looking at the Rainforest, Gatun Lake and Locks tour 4 hrs which is a 1.5 hr eco-cruise on the lake, a walk through the rainforest and also gives you a tour of the new locks by bus and time at the Visitors Centre then bus to Colon to catch the ship. Or, the Rainforest Walk, Canal Cruise and Countryside from Puerto Limon for 4 hrs which is a bus ride to Limon then on to the rainforest walk and a pontoon boat ride through the Tortuguero Canals. Alternatively in Puerto Limon there is the Caribbean Train, Countryside and Tortuguero Canals for 3.5 hrs which is the historic open air train through the countryside then onto a boat to go through the Canals. This is our first partial transit cruise (hoping to do a full transit next year!) so not sure if it is better to stay on the ship in Gatun Lake or do an excursion there or in Puerto Limon. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks
  5. The Vista Sisters (less Zuiderdam) are passing the entrance to Tracy Arm. Roy
  6. This sounds encouraging. Final payment is due tomorrow for our December cruise on the Zuiderdam in NS 5191. Some recent issues have caused us to strongly consider not doing this cruise but we're on the fence and must decide tomorrow. If I thought the PG for breakfast would not be offered on this cruise, that would be enough for me to cancel, but my wife is more open-minded than I am about this. She'd give the CO a try.

  8. We have the Zuiderdam leaving New York September 27, but sailaway is 8PM so there probably won't be much to see. I had hoped to watch but have Baltimore Symphony tickets that night. I still thought I might make it because the Symphony has been on strike but they just settled today so my concert is on. Roy
  9. We love the Conquest Class ships and thoroughly enjoyed the Spirit Class ships. We sailed the Zuiderdam on HAL and loved that as well. I personally like the smaller ships. Someone else mentioned a walk around promenade deck. We used that every day on the Zuiderdam. Mega or XL doesn't interest me. One of these days I wouldn't mind a Dream Class cruise to try it out, but I foresee booking Conquest or smaller as long as they still sail.
  10. We disembarked from the Zuiderdam in Boston three weeks ago. The immigration and customs were handled on board. We had to wait until our color (the same color on our bags) was called. We wait in the Ocean Bar. Our ship card was scanned by HAL staff and we showed our passport to a US immigration officer. He looked at the passport, looked at our face and waved us through. No passport stamp, no Global Entry, no customs form and for me no questions. The immigration officer asked the person in front of me if he had purchased anything, and he said no. He was waved through. It was 15 minutes from the time our color was called until we were outside. The longest line was for taxis. We used Lyft ($16 including tip). Lyft had a shorter wait time than a taxi. We were at the airport in less than an hour from our color group being called.
  11. Thanks all plus an update which was somewhat what I had feared. We're all familiar with the PVSA and many think it's a great American shame but many countries have similar laws. Some of you know of my obsession with Come From Away. I am on the Zuiderdam next September Quebec to Boston and the new itinerary has stops at Corner Brook, St. Anthony, and St. John's. I had hoped to get off the Zuiderdam in Corner Brook and have a night or 2 in Gander before rejoining the ship in St. John;s. Unfortunately, Canada has cabotage laws which are somewhat comparable to the PVSA, as do I think many other countries. Here's the response my TA got from HAL: Thank you for your recent correspondence with Holland America Line, unfortunately this request is denied due to the Cabbatoge Laws. Our ships cannot go from one Canadian port to another without leaving the Canadian shelf. Guests would not be able to disembark in Corner Brook it is still in the Canadian shelf. Best regards, Laurie Thanks for your suggestions. Roy
  12. Club Orange will be available on the Zuiderdam starting with the next cruise which will leave NYC on the 27th.Sorry, no more details.

  14. FYI, the ship is the Zuiderdam.
  15. We are on the Zuiderdam, cruising from Quebec City to Fort Lauderdale with a stop in New York. What is the best way to get to Central Park from the Manhattan Cruise Port? Is it possible to walk (it looks to be about 1 mile which is totally fine for walking but not sure about getting out of the terminal) or would we be better taking a cab or public transportation? We want to get on the City Sightseeing HOHO and figured the spot near Central Park is the closest. Alternatively, there is a stop at 55th & 8th or 46th & 8th. Any help would be appreciated!
  16. What are the current fixed dining times on the Zuiderdam?
  17. Somewhere on HAL's website it does say that CO is included for Neptune Suites. The upgrade and "special event" are not given to NS, but the rest of it is. I'm very curious about the mimosas. I'm on Zuiderdam this winter, so I'll be curious to see what you find out. On the K, they were making mimosas right there. I recall waiting a VERY long time for a mimosa on one of the Vistas because a waiter had to go and fetch it from a bar. If you don't get the mimosa on the Oo, this could be the reason.
  18. In a July, on Zuiderdam, we got cans. $2.50 plus gratuity subtracted from card. The mini bar does not work.
  19. Yes, I understand, but it's hard to let go of my "safety net," which includes that flashlight. LOL. BTW, for a 14-day cruise, I use only a carry-on, so I'm packing light and continue to pack less and less. Each cruise, I seem to downsize more, especially after earning 4* status, with the free laundry. It makes traveling with HAL so much easier. I used to haul 3 pieces of luggage for a 7-day! Can't believe I ever did that, but my son reminds me that we boarded the Zuiderdam once in our early cruising days with 7 pieces of luggage for 3 people on a 10-day Panama cruise. We didn't wear half the clothes I brought as you can imagine. Plus, it took me forever to pack and unpack. No joy in that. In those early years, my son compared me to Rose and her mother in the Titanic movie with all their trunks!
  20. we are now on Zuiderdam and there was no health questions to fill out in Quebec when we boarded. Hope you feel better soon.

Since it will again be in the Pacific, I can post the Fleet Report around 10 or 11 am from the ship, or if someone wants I can provide a file for them to post earlier. I will be out of the eastern time zone for 45 days. Rich
  22. On the Zuiderdam in a couple of weeks. Booked thru a TA. Does she order me a soda card or do I call HAL? I can't do it online as our internet is not reliable. (I'm using my neighbours right now).
  23. If you want a more traditional ship, select Vista Class (Noordam, Oosterdam, Zuiderdam, Westerdam) or Signature Class (Eurodam/Nieuw Amsterdam). The newest ships, Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam, have narrow Promenade Deck with no room for deck chairs. Of course, the R and S Class ships (the smaller, older sisters in the fleet) have the wider decks too, but limited music venues. If music is "your thing", the newer ships may be your cup of tea, as they have multiple venues, such a BB Kings Blues Club, Billboard On Board, Lincoln Center Stage, and Rolling Stone Rock Room. All the Vista and Signature Class ship have these venues also, except for Rolling Stone Rock Room. If you enjoy specialty dining, Vista Class has Canaletto's and Pinnacle Grill. Signature Class added Tamarind's while retaining the other two fee venues. The Pinnacle Class (two newest ships) has all the previously mentioned restaurants plus Sel de Mer. Free choices include New York Deli and Dutch Café, a real hit that serves Dutch specialties. If excellent service floats your boat, you can't go wrong on any HAL ship. Its crews are known for their welcoming, warm, gracious hospitality and service, which keeps a legion of HAL devotees returning to cruise with them again and again. Hope this helps.
  24. If you enjoy walks and sitting on the Promenade Deck as we do, the Vista Class ships are what you want. Ships like the Zuiderdam, Eurodam, Noordam and a few others have the full walk- around promenade decks with the teak steamer loungers. All the ships built in at least the last 10+ years all have promenade decks but the views are blocked by the lifeboats, something about SOLAS rules that the lifeboats have to be on the same deck that you would board in case of emergency. One of my favorite things I love about cruising is reading a good book while sitting in one of HALs steamer chairs on the promenade deck watching the ocean go by.
