  1. Sailing on Zuiderdam during her early years, I didn't mind the increase in size. I did like having an affordable veranda stateroom and the mid-ships exterior elevators. I did not care for the "bordelo red" color scheme in some of the public rooms--whomever chose that color.
  2. Hi Sharon, We are off again at the end of the year. We are doing a B2B Holiday cruise on the Zuiderdam from December 16 through January 6, 2019. Total of 21 days Then we are getting on the Nieuw Amsterdam on Jan 6 through Jan 20, 2019 for 14 days. Finally we are travelling on the Nieuw Statendam from Jan 20 through Jan 30, 2019 for 10 days. All out of Fort Lauderdale. Total 6 weeks, not as long as the World Cruise, but we will be gone a sufficient amount of time to get out of our crazy Pennsylvania cold weather in January. Mary Lou and Art Colussy
  3. I fondly remember everyone on CC freaking out about the Zuiderdam when she launched. I think it was the Joe Farcus interior and the huge size.

  8. If you would be so kind as to add POA1 and Huskerchick to the December 16th sailing on the Zuiderdam (10 Southern Caribbean Seafarer Holiday) I'd appreciate it. We're legally obligated to provide updates to Poohby Joe's Guide to Cabana Living in even numbered years, so that's part of the plan.
  9. Yesterday passengers were able to disembark Zuiderdam before 08:30. In Copenhagen. You should be able to get to the airport in time for a 10:55 flight. Always a risk but I would be prepared to take that risk. Sent from my iPad using Forums
  10. On the topic of retiring captains there is another captain retiring in January 2019 , Captain Chris Turner . We have cruised with him on the Zuiderdam ,the Prinsendam the Zaandam and the Volendam . We had a couple of great dinners with him ! Too bad for us another big loss to HAL ! Really enjoyed Captain Bowland a number of years ago when he did the Voyage of the Vikings on the Eurodam there was a very funny cruise director on board , his name if I remember well was J.C. and the two of them had us in stitches on a lot of the morning shows on TV . If he is in Venice now he will be taking out the Nieuw Statendam. Captain De Vries had the honors to do that on the Koningsdam . ( Hey , did you know they are both Canadian ! Not bad eh ! ) .:D:D:D
  11. We sailed with Captain van Zaane on Westerdam and Captain Scott on Noordam and Eurodam , Actually, now that I think back, we may hav e sailed with Captain and Mrs. Scott on Zuiderdam ( some years ago).
  12. Just got back a few days ago from our cruise. Wife and I took the Holland American Zuiderdam out of Ft Lauderdale on a Baltic cruise. Before we sailed we booked a tour with Alla Tours for Saint Petersburg. Crossed the Atlantic and less than two days before we hit Saint Petersburg we got a notice in our mail box stating that "Guests who book their excursions independently must wait 90 minutes after docking before independent tour operators and drivers allowed into the by Port Authorities." Our ship was scheduled to arrive at 7 AM and our tour operator was supposed to pick us up at 830 AM! Hmmm that would not give us much time to get through customs. So I went to our EXC guide, he was no help. Customer Service next, I asked to see the Officer in Charge. No help there either. I felt as if they were treating us differently than the others who had booked our tour through the ship. I can understand them trying to make more money for the company but telling us less than two days out? We wanted to take our tour and see St Petersburg! The day arrived and there were two stairwells letting the guests out. I could see the passengers slowly ebbing out. We went down to the floor where they let us out. We were told that the Russian customs officers would turn us away as we were on a tour with a independent company. Okay, no problem we would just get back into line until they approved us. Wife and I just walked out of the ship by the Officers and workers who wanted us to stay onboard. I believe it was about 7:45 AM. You head to a building where there are several lines of single customs agents sitting in booths. There are agents helping the lines move forward as well as the ship officers trying to move people along. I did not count the lines of booths because we were in one side and I could not see the other but there had to be 8-10 booths. The lines move slowly as you enter the booth one at a time. They look at you, swipe your passport through a reader, look at the paperwork provided to you by Alla. They print off a visa which you turn in at the end of the first day. It took my wife and I about 35-40 minutes by the time we got into the line and were both through. You really feel that you are in a movie: our nervousness, the guards in their uniforms, going through customs, being in Russia etc. My wife did ask when she was in the booth with the customs officer if it were okay to be there at that time as we were with Alla Tours. He replied "of course." All in all it was the best tour we have had. I talked to others who went into Russia by themselves with a visa they bought before they got there that it cost 175 USD per person! Alla Tours is worth all the five stars they have earned. At the end of the first day Alla drops you off, you again go through the customs booths. They take the visa form they printed out from you and you head back to the ship. The second day was so much easier. They still have to see you but it is a lot quicker, a wait of about five minutes. No printed visa, just a quick look. In all you get two stamps in your passport. The weather in St Petersburg is sunny 55 days a year and that it is very rainy. I hate to tell you that we used up two of those sunny days while we were there! We still love Holland America though and wish all going to St Petersburg blue skies and flat seas. I hope this review of us getting into St Petersburg helps!
  13. Does anyone know the wattage on Holland American ships. I am hoping to bring a mini clothes steamer on the Zuiderdam. Would this be allowed?
  14. Thank you so much for posting this link. From it, I took a look at the Nieuw Amsterdam and learned from a review that it's staterooms were completely refurbished last year. :) I have friends that will be on the Zuiderdam soon. I will pass this link on to them. ;)
  15. Thanks for your prompt response. In 2019 we would take only the leg of VOV from Boston departing July 30th and arriving in Rotterdam on August 16th. The ship is switched from the Rotterdam to the Zuiderdam, which I have read is somewhat larger. If so, leaving later in the summer may be advantageous for maneuverability if there is less ice to dodge in tight areas.
  16. On Maasdam in May. Much to my disappointment, the "new and improved" shops had zero "Dam Ships" merch and pretty much no merch of any kind that I wanted to purchase. Got a Maasdam shirt (available in same design in white, orange, and navy blue) and that's it. For more specifics, I've written about this before on a couple of older threads, I think about the new shopping experience. I love the "Dam Ships" stuff and would've been thrilled to get more. Guess I'll have to love the one t-shirt I do have (that sadly has a hole in the armpit) unless by some miracle Zuiderdam has something better when I board her in December.
  17. Christina, I have enjoyed these new photos very much! Thank you to all that worked diligently to photograph and work on this project! They are beautiful and such a great variety. We are on the Zuiderdam in November. I've said it before, I will say it again: I LOVE Cruise Critic!
  18. We sailed Zuiderdam from Quebec to New York just under a year ago. Lifeboat drill was about one hour before we sailed - not the day before when we boarded. This made sense because everyone had to be on board by the time the drill took place.
  19. Are you perhaps on the Veendam or Zuiderdam repo cruises from Canada TO Fort Lauderdale? There are no cruises to New England/Canada from FLL. In any case, most of the OV cabins have the heads of the beds beneath the windows, making it hard to view much without crawling up on the bed. Separating the beds doesn't help. EM
  20. I was a bit concerned about the K'dam but we cruised on her for the first time last Christmas. Is it different than the other HAL ships - absolutely yes! But we learned to accept the difference in decor and ended up loving the ship so much that we booked it again for 11 days at Thanksgiving. The food and service were great but that is something I've come to expect from a HAL cruise. The theater -in-the-round style was wonderful and there were very few poles that would block the view. There were many more music venues than on the other ships. And, of course, the casino was also larger. The Zuiderdam is still my favorite but the K'dam is a close second. Helen
  21. Did the Zuiderdam have lectures about the Canal and other cultural aspects of the trip? I tend to lean toward Princess because our Alaska cruise had such great explanatory lectures and commentary. Would be grateful to hear about the comparison on that aspect. And I agree--we love the cozy size of the Coral Princess.
  22. Anyone out there have pictures of Neptune Suite 4184 on Koningsdam during a 2018 cruise? We are booking in there for the 2018 Christmas cruise and were wondering what the furniture layout and types are currently. We were in an aft suite on Zuiderdam in Feburary and were very satisfied with the layout even though it is somewhat smaller cabin than normal SB's....but loved the balcony so much it was never an issue. Thanks in advance if you can share.

  24. So I'm assuming that the Westerdam and Zuiderdam are sister ships?
  25. Yeah Emelie goes between Hammarby Sjöstad and Nybroplan. She stops at Masthamnen (S167) at Djurgården (Vasa jetty) (+ some other stops that aren't relevant) and then Nybroplan. It does not go to Gamla stan. You will have to use Djurgårdsfärjan which departs from Allmänna gränd which is a short walk from Vasa. https://kartor.eniro.se/m/0oVfA If you are on the Zuiderdam this Friday then you are at S167.
