How is the Oosterdam? I believe there was a dry dock last year. I know it is a different class of ship, but is she similar to Nieuw Amsterdam now with the recent updates? Is it true that she also has a Retreat? We are currently booked for NS, but weren’t 100% thrilled with K-dam, so we’re considering switching to Oosterdam or NA. We love NA but are thinking Oosterdam would give us a new experience. It is significantly less $$. Are the prices less because it is a lesser experience? I’ve read some things about old furniture, etc in public areas, but I’m hoping that is no longer since the dry dock. Are there current photos out there? Thank you!!

    Oosterdam for kids?

We are considering the Oosterdam, we would be new to the line, have done Carnival, NCL and MSC and found plenty to do with the kids (11&13)..is the Oosterdam okfor kids/have activities/waterslides?
  4. New to holland. Was looking into an alaksa cruise but do not know anything about holland. Past cruises have been carnival ( which is a little rowdy with booze for us) NcL which was ok but kinda boring. We like carnival cuz the shows and comedy shows and day activities like bingo. Was worried holland may be a little to boring or slow for a lack of a better word. We are 50 and kids with us in 20s. Not real drinkers or outgoing but love shows and bingo not really bars. Does this ship offer daily bingo and little daytime shows and such and at night a Broadway show or magic or comedy . Somthing other then music in a bar. And dress. Can I wear khaki pants and a polo shirt to dinner except on gala note of course. Kids have to wear slacks at dinner or can they wear the new fad yogi pants and a top? Do they sell bottle water to purchase before hand so we can have water in room like a case ? Is there empty fridges on board in rooms or are they stocked Ships seem small is there alot of movement on them ? Since so small? Any I site or things you can share I would be grateful

    Upgrade on Oosterdam

Received an upgrade offer for our Nov. 24 seven day cruise on the Oosterdam, 69 dollars for each of us from an obstucted view to a Veranda. What do you think? Sounds pretty good but we liked it better when there was no charges for upgrades. We did get a nice no charge upgrade on the MSC Seaside back in Sept. from an inside cabin to a Veranda.

    Oosterdam.....just back

We are veterans of 58 cruises with 20 on HAL. Thought I'd give a little review of our Nov 24-Dec 1 cruise on the Oosterdam, we have now sailed on all the Vista class ships and the Oosterdam just became our favorite ship. The ship to us is just a little prettier than the other Vista ships, the decor was outstanding. The ship was spotless, probably the cleanest ship we have sailed on. I believe the ship is now 13 years old and is in great shape. Service everywhere on board was outstanding from the MDR to the cabin steward to the Ocean bar to guest relations to the Lido buffet. Embarkation and dis-embarkation were both a breeze. Kudos to Alvaro who was the main server in the Lido buffet line, very friendly with always a smile on his face. The food in the MDR and the Lido were to us the best food we have eaten on a ship. Can't comment on any of the specialty restaurants as we passed on them. Entertaiment was very good in the Mainstage with a very funny comedian/magician and another comedian. Production shows were very good. We have now seen BBC Planet Earth twice now and HAL needs to give us more entertainment and skip stuff we can see on on TV at home on the National Geographic channel. We love the 3 other entertainment venues as they always have great performers in BB Kings, Billboard On board and Lincoln Center. I'm not going to review the ports as the only place we left the ship was in St. Thomas as I have a thing about watches and always buy one in St. Thomas to add to my collection, St. Thomas is the greatest place on earth to bargain with the salespeople. San Juan is also a favorite of ours but we were just there in September so decided to stay on board. Could care less about Turk and Caicos. Our only problem on the cruise was an issue with hot water in our cabin, it was tepid until I complained on Sunday and we had hot water for 2 days with back to tepid most of the remaining time. Passengers in other staterooms on our deck had the same problem but everybody else we talked to had no problem. Any questions, feel free to ask.

    Oosterdam closets?

Hi everyone, We will be in a VB cabin on deck 5 of the Oosterdam. Will each of the closets have the shelves that fold down if we need them instead of hanging space? Thanks!

    Oosterdam family cruise

First of all— thank you all for your expert opinions and advice on all things HAL! We are just off our third HAL cruise, over Thanksgiving, but our first with our son, who is four years old, so we had a little bit of nerves going in to last week! (NB, this wasn’t our first cruise rodeo— we’ve taken little man on Disney but we adults were Moused out and ready for something... else!). We had so much fun, we booked next Thanksgiving on the Nieuw Statendam. The Oosterdam was wonderful. Our cabin was wonderful— balcony on deck 5 forward. Easily accessible to elevators/stairs, and we had great cabin stewards as always. Our steward got into the habit of asking our son what kind of towel animal he wanted each night— AND each morning!! Spoiled child got two towel animals every day. It was sweet, and some were very intricate! I was very impressed! Food was great. We had anytime dining in the main dining room deck 2, and had a reservation each night for either 5:30 or 5:15, which was perfect for our son. Service in the main dining room was spotty— one night it was near catastrophic— our server brought our food, but never brought our son’s food. Then we sat for at least 5-7 minutes with still no plate for our son, and no re-appearance of our server, so I got up and walked to a head waiter, explained the problem, then in a millisecond, our son’s food appeared, along with profuse apologies. Four nights we had perfect service, and three nights we had mediocre to poor service in the main dining room, so not sure what happened with those serving teams, but it was very off. Lido was wonderful, and the service quick. My husband had a beverage package for sodas, though I did not. A word about Club HAL— my son loved it! The counselors provided structured activities but there was also a lot of flexibility because of the number of children on board. Sailing our week were 280 children (total of 2100 passengers). We could access the club schedule on our stateroom smart tv’s which was handy. Our son was a little charmer— the crew would give him high fives at every turn, knew him by name after the first day, and he left the week with his very own free HAL lanyard and pin from the cruise director. He thought he was hot stuff. We utilized HAL’s EXC tours in Grand Cayman (dolphin encounter), Jamaica (Martha Brae rafting trip), and rented a cabana on Half Moon Cay. Our beach excursion was canceled in Cozumel so we did an independent trip to Chankanaab. The EXC staff went above and beyond— even emailed the Martha Brae tour operators to make sure my husband, myself, and our son could all ride in the same raft. In sum, we had a fantastic week. My husband says he still prefers Eurodam because of Tamarind, but I didn’t miss it. Truthfully we wouldn’t have gone anyway last week because of our son, lol! Now we can look forward to next year on the Nieuw Statendam! Thanks again for your help and tips!

    Oosterdam questions...

I can't seem to get the "Search" function to work without getting a ton of stuff not related to the questions I searched for. Can I still order ANY MDR item through Room Service at the beginning of MDR hours? Do the Flat Screen TV's have DVD players in the Balcony cabins, if so, can I bring my own DVD's? Thanks, I used to be able to use "search", guess I'm getting dumb in my old age.
  13. We are sailing next month to the Caribbean on the Oosterdam. Our first time on HAL - 1 previous, cruise on Princess. I have two questions - has anyone used the laundry service on the Oosterdam and if so, what is the cost and were any garments damaged? ( Packing will be easier if I know the laundry service is reliable and reasonably priced.) Second question: The HAL brochure says that each ship has a daily Catholic Mass. Does anyone have info on whether there is actually daily mass on the Oosterdam and when and where the service is held. Thank you, in advance, for any assistance with these questions.
  14. I haven't been on the Oosterdam in several years. Can anyone who has been on recently tell me the status of the library? How much of it remains? I'm doing the TA Crossing next week and I'm trying to figure out how many books to take. Thanks!!!
  15. Other than size and capacity, what are the main differences between Oosterdam and Veendam? Food venues, pool, entertainment venues, casino.
  16. Has anyone been on the Oosterdam recently? It has been a few years for me. I'm on the TA crossing next week and I wanted to know what the condition of the library is. Are there still a lot of books there? Is the library still maintained? I'm trying to figure out how many books to bring with me.
  17. I am about to book for January 26, 2019 on Oosterdam. One of our cabin choices is just below the entrance to the casino and the theater. I’m not concerned about the theater noise but I do worry if the casino smoke filters down the stairs? I have been on ships that this was a problem and some that you would never know it was there! Any help on this would be appreciated! Thanks!
  18. We just returned from a great cruise! 26 days on the Oosterdam, boarding in Venice October 15 and arriving in Fort Lauderdale Nov 10. We actually arrived in Venice on October 12. Our flight was good, we had used miles to get business class seats. We water taxi'ed to our Hotel, the Danieli, Located right around the corner from St Mark's, just one building over from the Doge's Palace. It was a sunny day in Venice, fortunately we got there prior to the horrible flooding. We walked around in the sun for a while, grabbed a little lunch and then collapsed to try to sleep off the jet lag.

    Oosterdam NS balconies

Hi, I have a question.... Other than the aft-facing, corner cabins, are there any Neptune Suites that feature a larger balcony than others? About to book on Oosterdam and the aft, corner suites are all booked. Balcony size is of importance to me. Any other features that would make one NS more desirable than the others? THANKS!
