February 26, 2018 - A holiday in Tasmania?

Recommended Posts

Booked on Diamond Princess Auckland to Sydney. Will port in Hobart on Feb 26, 2018. There are no excursions offered through Princess for this port and I'm finding a very limited selection among the other shore excursion providers for this date. Wondering if this is a local holiday, or just too late in the cruise season? We are really keen to find an excursion that goes to the Mt. Field national park. Any suggestions?

We visited Hobart on 27th February 2017. As the Aussies drive on the same side of the road as us we decided to hire a car. You can read about our day here on my blog.

Celebrity Solstice Postcard #15 – Hobart, Tasmania

I suppose we are all different and we found Hobart was one of the stops where we thought there was loads to do and see, just not enough time to do it.

Many on our Roll Call used a company call Eye See. I think they managed to organise 3 vans in total.

One of the vans went to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary/ Mount Field National Park and the others went to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary - Mt Wellington - Her Story - Richmond.

I suspect it's just that shore tours aren't listed yet on Princess' web site.

A few things I think are hard to beat...

Mt Wellington for the spectacular view over the city

Ferry to MONA (Museum of Old and New Art)

Road trip to Ross via Richmond

Wildlife park

Road trip south to the Air Walk

The Cadbury factory (but I hear it's not what it once was, no longer a full blown tour)

Port Arthur if you're not docking there.

Down to Sandy Bay for the Casino

The Salamanca historical area (though you miss the markets)

If you do a road trip by yourself take the chance to pull into some of the Tiny Towns.

I often read of people trying to cram way too much into the day in Hobart. (Many other places too of course).

I know if you have travelled half way around the world it's tempting, but I doubt you gain much be being able to say I saw A, b, c and d, rather than spending a good chunk of time at a and d.

I spoke with some people one cruise who had, in one day, done Port Arthur, the Wildlife Sanctuary and Mt Wellington, I asked what they thought of "The Isle of the Dead" they looked at me like I had three heads, when I dug a little deeper they'd also missed things at both the other stops too.

Of course that's a problem with cruising you. Only really get a taste.

This is our first trip to New Zealand and Australia. We'd love some information on private tours in New Zealand. We will be on the Celebrity Reflection with stops in Tauranga, Napier, Wellington, and Picton.

Judy Livingston that Pam S mentioned was our guide for a day in Hobart during our land vacation. She was fantastic and I would heartily recommend her. I can report that we spent a day that included panoramic views from Mt. Wellington, a drive up to Mt Field National Park with a stop for a morning snack, the three waterfall trek in Mt. Field, a picnic lunch at Mt. Field, and finally the drive back to Hobart with a stop for the opposite scenic view from Rosny. Judy is great in that she gives you options and lets you decide on what you want to do. There are a number of walks/hikes in Mt. Field and she'll help you pick on that let's you see what you want to see and spend the amount of time you want. She's also one of the only guides that I know that leads from the slowest walker. Most guides I've had charge ahead and you end up having to tell them to slow down when one of the people on the tour starts to lag. Not Judy, she sticks with the slowest person and if the fast walkers want to dart ahead (like me) she gives clear directions and what to look out for.

Remember that Mt. Field is a 1.5 hr drive each way from Hobart so you may not have time for much else if you want to take 2-3 hour hike through the eucalyptus trees. They are impressive... massive trees that remind me of the big fir trees on the North American west coast. Maybe not as big as redwoods and sequoias but pretty close.

Try Eye See Tasmania - they have options for what you are looking for.
