Discuss Implementation of Smoking Policy

YES, I have read the policy -- but I am wanting to know WHERE the places are on Coral (or Island) -- Mike has always been quite respectful smoking on our balcony away from the wind -- not smoking when neighbors are out on their balc -- putting it out properly in an ashtray enclosed-cup he brings with him -- really curious if smoking would be allowed on aft public open deck where he could not bother anyone???

Wish everyone was like your Mike. I really appreciate people like him being so respectful and especially feel bad that smokers like him are inconvienced by this new policy.

We returned on Jan. 18th from the Golden RT to Hawaii...the new smoking policy was not in effect on our cruise. We are smokers and had a balcony on Baja deck. Our cabin was flanked by family members on each side who are non-smokers, however we could see approximately 8 other balconies from our vantage point where ashtrays/smokers were present (one below us a cigar smoker.)

We also try to be respectful of others using adjacent balconies and looked around to see if perhaps we would be affecting someone else who might be out enjoying their balcony. On day 9 of our 14 day cruise, we got a call from a ship official letting us know that there had been a complaint about smoking. The call was very courteous, stating that we had every right to smoke on our balcony, and also reminding us that there were various other areas of the ship where smoking was allowed. They also stressed that they were by no means singling us out as the offenders, as they realized that several other smokers had cabins in our area of the ship. We felt this was handled very well by Princess.

As for voting with our wallet, no, we will probably not cruise Princess again, as relaxing on our balcony with a smoke is one of the things we love about cruising.

The way I look at it, if I'm hungry and not fond of Chinese food, I'll choose the Italian restaurant instead! No hard feelings, just my humble opinion!

My wife and I are both non smokers. We enjoyed cruising on Princess before the policy change and will continue to enjoy cruising with them with the new policy. I do hope, however, that Princess will continue their practice of having several smoke free evenings in the casino each cruise; I do enjoy the tables, but some nights it's impossible to breathe in there!

I agree with Pam. I will turn anyone in who is smoking on balcony or room.

Princess needs to make the entire Promenade deck non smoking so those choosing to run or walk has fresh air to breathe in. A pool area all non smoking would be nice also. We are looking forward to enjoying our balcony on next cruises. Would love to meet Pam on a cruise. Hoping the pizza place on Lido deck will not be surrounded by smoker(ers).

Seadeck2, the fewer places that are non-smoking means that the places that are will have even more smoke. For walkers and runners there is still plenty of deck without smokers. Every cruise will be different as to how many smokers are on board. If you are not happy with the current policy, you too can vote with your wallet and cruise on a different line. Don't forget smokers should be able to enjoy their vacation also.

Although I personally wouldn't mind an all non smoking ship, Princess has to stay in business somehow & the restrictions that are in place now are probably going to be sufficient for most people. Just stay clear of the smoking areas & the casino and you'll be fine. The biggest problem in the past was the balcony problem & that has been solved.

Could not have said it better myself.

Help is on the way however, I read where 750,000 people in the US have switched to e-cigarettes. Time will tell on this one.

As an ex-smoker, I have two comments.

1. What the hell is an e-cigarette? :)

2. I'm delighted with the new policy. Our last cruise, we were inundated with smoke on our balcony for the whole trip. It kinda sucked. (I can deal with it, my wife HATES it.)

I *am* concerned that the casino will be smokier. My wife won't even go in there unless it's a non-smoking evening. I can usually handle it, but if it gets worse... :P

Guess that was three comments. :)

E - Cigarettes are battery operated devices with a cartridge of nicotine, water and glycol and flavoring. Smokes like a cigarette an simulates smoke, but in reality it is water vapor and odorless. Do a google search it is an interesting subject. You may use them anyplace on the ship except dining room and show room. The water vapor also diapates very rapidly

I agree. This is what I saw from my balcony on my cruise last January. During the day and evening, there were 2-4 people chain-smoking on each of the balconies with ash trays. My balcony was essentially unusable due to my getting sick from smoke, and yes, it definitely carried to my balcony and wasn't "blown away" by the wind. I had a covered balcony on Baja and the smoke got under the cover (Aloha balcony) and stayed on mine. If I opened my balcony door, it got inside. I can live with a few smoking areas on the ship because I can avoid them.

Pam is right. This is exactly what we experienced on our last two Princess cruises. In both cases we followed advice from these boards to get the furthest forward cabin possible and in both cases we did, a Dolphin deck mini. In both cases we had chain smokers in the next cabin, a cabin further aft. This didn't matter. Smoke still invaded our balcony and came into the cabin, in the first case through the vents as well as when we opened the balcony door. So why did we do this twice? Well, considering there wouldn't be anyone forward of us the second time (that cabin is family suite and they lock the balcony on sea days) and considering that only 20% of the people smoke and most are not chain smokers, we thought the odds were in our favor. We are cruising again in a few days and if our balcony is not usable due to lack of enforcement, this will probably be our last Princess cruise for a while.

On our last trip in Nov the situation was better than normal for a balcony but had we known about the rule change upcoming in Jan we never would have booked it & just waited. I'm really anticipating a big improvement in April although a little apprehensive about all the bad reports I read about smoke from the promenade deck rising upward. Had we known about the possible post side smoking problem we would have booked starboard.

We are new to Princess. We have sailed a lot on RCCL and X. We are considering a TA in December. My DW is very adamant against smoking and it would ruin her cruise if the cabin smelled smokey or there was someone nearby on a balcony smoking. I have read that Princess has a new policy that just went into effect in January. Should I be concerned?

Just off the Grand. Had no problems with smokers. Did not witness any violations. Only a couple of areas allow smoking. One is the Casino the other is one side of Lido deck 14 just outside the Horizon Court. The Casino designates one night "non smoking" but the smell of smoke is still strong. Have an enjoyable cruise.

Just off 4 weeks on Princess (2 on crown and then 2 on Grand). I am a smoker and smoking was allowed on the Crown, but not on the Grand, so I've experienced the no smoking policy changes.

First off I don't think the cabin stewards are going to be reporting any smokers, as I don't think they will do anything to jeopardize a possible extra tip. They are there for one reason and one reason only, and that is to make money. Our cabin steward, who I will not name, on the Grand when the new policy started, actually told me if I wanted to smoke to use the bathroom and he wouldn't tell. I didn't, but I wonder how many more cabin stewards offered the same option and how many took them up on it.

The smoking areas were far more crowded than usual and I don't see that changing any time soon. Unfortunately the washrooms on the Lido are on the port side right where the designated smoking area is and people were going by holding their noses. On island night the band was set up on the port side as well and all the activity took place on that side. All the tables in the smoking area were full, mostly with non smokers who were very displeased with the smokers. I didn't go into the casino so I can't comment on it. The promenade port side deck was much busier with smokers as well and walkers would go by and make comments. In the morning there were even people in robes down there having a smoke.

We didn't get much use of our balcony as a result of the no smoking policy. We likely would not have used it much anyway because of a young brat beside us that was always out there yelling at the top of her lungs every time she didn't get her way that she hated pretty much everything in the world. First day on the Grand my wife went out on the balcony barefoot and did the 'holy hell my feet are on fire' dance, as there is only bare metal on them now. I understand they are putting the outdoor turf, like around the pool areas in them, but also a factor in balcony use.

Usually when I did go out on the balcony, I found there weren't many people using their balcony, especially at night and on port days, but still went to seek out a smoking area. On the Grand there is a very nice smoking area behind the One 5 lounge, which I don't think too many people realized. I didn't find it until the second week on the Grand, but it was far nicer to sit there and didn't get the comments from non smokers.

I too will vote with my wallet, and will think long and hard before booking another Princess cruise. I just don't need the snide comments from non smokers, when I'm on vacation.

Perhaps you need to read the new policy….. if you are STILL not happy with it, it really is very simple....do not cruise on Princess.

Before this new policy, I don’t understand why non-smokers who get so sick from smoke would consider booking a balcony on Princess. If you made a decision to risk the extra cost without the ability to enjoy your own balcony, you only have yourself to blame…..smokers on balconies were doing nothing wrong. They too had their right to enjoy their own balcony. Now with the new policy in effect, when smokers are using the designated areas, you have no right to complain…..they are getting what they paid for and expect out of Princess.

We have been on several Princess cruises. Adherence to the new policy will eliminate my biggest peeve: Balcony smoke.

Casinos are casinos. Non-smoking nights still have a stale smell, but that is expected.

There are smoking areas on the lido deck, usually on side of the ship but I can't remember which.

My wife and I don't like smoke, but overall it isn't an issue for us.

Take care and enjoy!

It would prove interesting to know how may people actually complain about the smokey cabins especially in his section. You can hide it from a smoker but not so much from a non smoker who is now especially keen to walking into a cabin smelling fresh unlike past cruises where it's been covered up by a strong cleaning solution smell. I'm also sure he'd be doing a lot explaining to his superiors about why his cabins always need the extra cleaning.

As an ex-smoker, I'm highly in favor of the policy. It's very unfortunate that people can't be adult enough to follow the rules they are given when they get on board a Princess ship and still will smoke on their balconies (or in their rooms). It's also highly unfortunate that I might have to babysit them. But for my comfort and safety, you betcha I'd be calling Guest Services - repeatedly if the issue continued.

I was on the Emerald for a few cruises before the smoking change and the two cruises since it. Here's what I've noticed:

I've not smelled ANY smoke in the hallway outside of our cabin (an inside cabin) since the change, whereas I frequently smelled it before.

The casino, except on non-smoking nights, is smoky beyond belief. I can't even enter it. Unfortunately, passengers attending the 8:30pm Princess Theater shows and entering from Deck 6 are lined up through the casino on both sides every night, waiting for the 7:15pm show to end and the theater to empty.

The port side promenade is quite smoky, but not as bad as the casino.

The port side tables and chairs by the Neptunes Reef and Calypso pools are pretty smoky, but not as bad as the casino.

The Terrace Deck port side is no worse than it was before the 1/17 cruise. Thank God. That was my own biggest concern.

I would say that, on whole, it's a huge step in the right direction.

If a cabin steward were to look the other way when confronting smoking in the cabin, he would have to explain to his superiors why the next cruisers occupying the cabin are complaining about the tobacco smell.

If I were to walk in and smell the smoke, I would insist on a deep clean. The previous occupants would probably be billed.

The steward gets his tips from a pool whether you stiff him or not. If you are a smoker that would stiff him if he reminded you of the rules, then that doesn't say much for you.

There was plenty of advance notice to the new smoking rules.
