Lava tubes hike in Tahiti

Has anyone ever taken a hike in the Tahiti lava tubes? I know people say the landscape is less scenic than other islands so I am in search of something unique to do. The photos look cool and they said it is about a 5 hour moderate hike. Just wondering if anyone has any personal experience to share.

Never even heard of them.

We took a jeep tour through the interior of the island - not around. The island is beautiful up there in the volcano. The road was atrocious, but if it is still drivable and tours are offered, take one of them. We booked at our hotel.

We're not going til next April, but I'm interested also. We've been to Tahiti and just came back from Hawaii, where we did a lot of hiking. We want something a bit more adventurous than the typical tours.

I just got back from a French Polynesia trip, and spent some time exploring both Tahiti and Moorea - The lava tubes were amazing! Check out my blog for some photos of the hike and directions: offpathtravel.com/hitiia/
