NCL Fleet Wide Wine List. :)

I was pleasantly surprised. There's actually a wide variety and nice selections. RCI could take a few notes from this list.

Agreed, for mass market cruising, NCL strikes a nice balance on the wine list from affordable favorites, to trophy wines like the Opus One. They also have some genuine "interesting" wines at really decent price points...the St Emillion Bordeaux for example carries only a $20 mark up over retail and is a very tasty wine with an 89 point score.

On the other hand, the wine stewards on NCL are not wine experts and rarely can be helpful in selecting a wine beyond obvious pairings...the wine tastings I've attended have been more like wine trivia (them: what's the best vintage? Me: um, can you be more specific to variety and region? Them: 1998) and the classic "white with fish and red with meat but order whatever you like because your on vacation." But hey, for a small fee you get to sample 4-6 wines and the pours are not stingy.

I lived on the Matua Marlborough SB on our last cruise, very, very nice, and quite reasonable!

I believe the wine list may be changing soon. The Vina Vivo selection on the Getaway is different and apparently the changes will go fleet wide over the coming months.

There are a lot rumoured changes coming up but to my understanding the Viva Vino package has always had a specific (different) list of wines available - not the whole fleet wide wine list.

A few of our faves are on the list - including the Wines by the glass ... looks like we're going for the UBP on our next cruise.

If you look carefully at the prices between the glass and bottle of same wine ... the bottle is 4 times the glass. It's good!

I have a funny story to tell ... when we boarded the Sun for the South America cruise we bought the 10 bottle package - I was given a list and I selected the bottles off the list and paid the price less 20%.

Naturally, being in South America, I selected mainly Chilean and Argentinian wines. Got the little slips with wine name on them. Then we went by this rule, when in Chilean waters, we would drink Chilean wine and when in Argentinian waters, we would drink the Malbecs ...

When we reached the Argentinian waters the ship ran out of Malbecs!!! It was 14 day Xmas/New Year cruise and there were so many South Americans on the cruise ... they drank all the best wines!!!

We found it so amusing - the wine steward was so apologetic but we brushed it off - and chose something else.

At least the ship was full of happy wine drinkers!! It was a memorable cruise for us. See my review in my signature.

Thank you for the post. I am a bit of a wine snob and I work in the Napa Valley wine industry. I was pleasantly surprised by some of the choice/price ratio. Not the greatest wine list but not bad. I think that the Schafer merlot is a great deal depending on what year it is.

The Viva Vino package is a subset of the main wine list. NCL released a press release recently to say that their wines were changing, and the alterations to the Getaway Viva Vino suggest that this change is starting there.

Having said that, on the Getaway one nighter the main wine lists seemed the same as usual.

I'm not sure anyone knows the extent of the changes, but I thought if worth mentioning, in a thread where people are commenting about the wine list, that if may not be the same next time they cruise.

Ok, so just a quick question, if the wine stewards are not wine experts about wine do they know how to open an older bottle of wine (without destroying the cork) and decant it properly? We have 2 bottles of 1990 Chateau Mouton Rothschild that we are bringing for a special occasion. I sometimes get a little nervous when I open one of my older bottles :o. Oh well its just a bottle of wine, right...;)

There's also a house red and white by the glass and bottle. $5.95 and $24, respectively, plus 15% gratuities. They do NOT appear on most (any?) Menus, but they are available at all venues.

Didn't try the white. The red was, well, drinkable. I've suffered thru worse. The wine package, even at the basic level was a decent deal.

Do you have the list????

Since this thread is full of people who are knowledgeable about wine, would someone kindly point me to a nice buttery Chardonnay on the list? What about the Rombauer? We fell in love with Mer Soleil Chardonnay on the Celebrity Reflection last year but I see that it isn't available on NCL :(

Also, can you buy the wine package during Spring Break? We're cruising on the Getaway April 12th. Thanks!

I do agree, they are not wine specialist, but at least for us, we know pretty much what we like so we can live with this.

We do choose the basic because there are a couple wines we really enjoy on the list. Our last cruise we had started to order the next level until we spotted the Malbec and the Black Opal. We stuck with the basic plan. We will do the same on our April cruise.
