Know that tips are put in a pool and shared. If you give someone a cash tip for extra service, are they allowed to keep it? At a bar if you place additional tip on the bill does it go to the bartender or to the pool?

As for extra tips to bartenders, I will go with... Yes. (As this statement is generally true about extra tips to stateroom and dining staff) Please note: I said generally.

BTW: I love finding all the cash floating in the pool, really helps defer the cost of cruising.

If you wish to tip a bartender or bar waiter, do so in cash. If you add it to the bill, I'm pretty sure it goes into the pool. I usually wait until the final night of the voyage and hand them an envelope.

For dining room waiters and cabin stewards, as long as you did not remove the automatic gratuity, they can keep any cash tips you hand them. I generally put the cash in an envelope with my cabin number written on it, so their supervisor can easily check to make sure I left my auto-grats on. If we're wrong about the premise in my first sentence, it still doesn't hurt anything to put my cabin number on the envelope.

All I can tell you is that the crew contracts stated (not sure if they still do, the ones I’ve seen would be a couple of years old now) that all cash tips must be handed in. It does not specify what happens after that.

But many here will be adamant that they know the answer.

In all honesty though does it matter, the crew know and appear happy with the arrangement, whatever it may be.

We give cash tips only at the end of the cruise. We don’t cancel the auto grats so I expect them to keep it. If not, the crew to whom we gave at least know that we appreciated their service.

If you have not removed your auto tips the Reg crew member gets to keep the cash, otherwise it’s pooled amongst the fleet

As others do we leave cash tips and hope that the person receiving it can keep it all.

We tip any extra to cabin stewards via envelope at the end of the cruise.

Bar waiters are tipped extra by cash during the cruise when there's no one around or by individual gifts so there's nothing that they can turn in, only enjoy it themselves or share with a friend.

Yes, it does make a big difference in service & drinks.

Lots of opinions but Princess chooses never to divulge to whom or how tips are distributed.

When we were on the Emerald in November we asked our wait staff if they receive extra tip money do they have to share it. Unfortunately they answered yes but we tipped them extra any because they were great! Next tip we will bring a little something they won’t be able to share.

Another tip: Check the "bin" on those casino machines where you "push" something towards them particularly if the ship has been "rocky." I've found money in them several times!

Some folks have reported receiving better service from bartenders by tipping as they go.

The bartenders are being tipped as they go -- by the 15% added to each drink. So far, I have always gotten acceptable service without the need to carry around cash to throw down at every drink order, and if the service is lacking, I simply avoid that bar/bartender for the duration. If the totality of the service overall by the end of the cruise has been outstanding, then they get an extra reward. Not before.
