In another big move, Carnival is cutting the cord on showing the ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX networks on in-stateroom TVs. The TVs will still show channels like CNN, TBS, TNT, and the Discovery channel in addition to the ship channels like the lido deck camera and cruise tracking. However, the overall size of the TV guide will be significantly reduced

I saw this too and was a little disappointed at first. Like most I don't watch a lot a TV on a cruise, but one of my funnest memories on my first cruise was watching the local news for a Denver station and how they were warning people to stay home and indoors because it was unusually cold( -15 if I remember correctly) while getting ready to go to the beach at Grand Cayman. .

Well we DO watch tv as we often cruise during March Madness and watching basketball is part of our vacation routine.
It is hard to believe that they won't show the games or that they'll only be on in the Sports Bar.

That stinks. We sleep with a TV on and on our last cruise we woke up the next morning to a high speed chase in Miami. It was fun watching it on tv.

I get it, this is unfortunate for the folks that like to watch TV on their cruise. Doesn’t matter to me either way as long as there is Ice Cream. Gotta have my late night snack!

Hi

Yes, people, some enjoy watching tv while on a cruise. If this impacts people in a negative way, they will make the same determination that everybody does on choosing a cruise. If this cruise line doesn't offer what the customer wants, they have the option of finding one that does. Not a biggie.

As the OP said they just posted FYI. For that a thank you is warranted. For those that think a debate on the benefits of watching tv while cruising is needed, probably starting a new thread on the "ask a cruise question" page would draw more responses as the audience would be wider. Just a thought.

At home, we ONLY get the major networks, so trading them for channels we don't normally get is just fine with me.

Honestly I would not notice if the room had no TV, but DW loves to curl up in bed and watch, while I go roam about the ship watching the sail aways, etc.

This is nothing more than another Carnival cutback. Anyone who believes that Carnival did not have the option of including local channels in their new providers package is delusional.

I have the tv on as I get ready for dinner. If I’ve laid out in the sun and been day drinking (which is every day because I’m one of those that maximizes my Cheers purchase) I might want to go to my cabin and lay down and watch Judge Judy before dinner. I might want to lay on the bed and watch Big Brother before I hit the casino. I’m on vacation....I should have the ability to do so.

Please take a moment and Google cruise line revenues for 2017. As a shareholder, I’m extremely pleased; as a customer, I take umbrage at the continued cheapening of the brand.

What is weird is, I don't even have a TV at home, but do watch when on vacation. Oh well, there will be something to watch I suppose. Now that I think about it, what I watch is no big deal so I am fine with the change.

Retransmission fees aren't cheap - Carnival was likely paying each local TV station a fee for each TV on each ship. That's just like Comcast/DirectTV/AT&T etc do for cable/satellite service on land. TV stations are losing viewers, so they're getting whatever the can from these fees
